Hi all, I'm wondering if anybody else has seen or heard of an issue like this.
I just bought a captivate from a person on craigslist, everything seemed fine when I was there checking the phone out (sim worked, perfect condition, etc) but now that I've got it home and been using it for a day I've noticed that the bottom touch buttons sometimes click on their own. Meaning I don't need to even touch any part of the bottom button area and the buttons activate. As you can imagine this is pretty frustrating, when you're in an app and all of a sudden the home button activates and brings you out of the app. It usually seems like the home button is the most susceptible, and sometimes will go crazy and keep clicking itself for 10-20 times in a row.
So far I've found no rhyme or reason as to why it's doing this and haven't been successfully in getting it to stop. I'm curious if anybody else is having an issue like this, and if so what did they do? I'd probably just return it to an AT&T store for a new unit, but I'm worried about trying to return the phone as a defective unit as I wasn't the original purchaser.
Any suggestions or ideas?
When I went to up switch my phone at best buy they're was a brand new phone that they took out oh the box for me that continuously hit the home button. You could see the back light of the button rapidly turn on and off

I had this same problem on my first captivate, swapped it out and had the issue again except with the search button. Swapped it out again and finally got one without the problem.

Thanks all, so it seems like it may be not just my specific unit, which I guess is good.
Now I'm just nervous about attempting to return the phone to AT&T for a swap out as I'm not the original purchaser. Anybody have any problems when doing something like this?
Mine does this too (search button), but strangely only under very specific conditions.
You can try AT&T's warranty exchange service, but there's a 10000:1 chance of getting it exchanged in the store without the original purchase receipt.
So, those 10000:1 odds? Ya... didn't happen. I took it in tonight and I said I was having problems with my captivate having the buttons activate own their own and they seemed interested, then found out that I didn't buy it from the store and pretty much stopped all trouble shooting and said they couldn't cover it and referred me to a "AT&T device support center". So that'll be my next step, or trying the warranty exchange service, this is the first I've heard of it.
Also what specific conditions does your search button activate?
On launch day, my first Captivate did that right in the store, it took 30 minuets and letting both the guy who sold me the phone and even the store manager see the phone kept doing that. Took it home and tried to charge it *left it charging for 6 hours and never got more then 84% charged*, returned it because the home button went off 20 - 30x in less then a minuet.. Now the second one works perfectly but I have to be careful sometimes I hit the search button with my hand!
HTH,
Charlie
I had the same problem and was able to fix it by upgrading to JH3. See my post here: (remove spaces) h t t p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=767666
mine is doing this randomly and i have to phsysically hit the home button to make it stop. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I don't remember seeing this when i had the case on but last few days i've been carrying it around without a case, it has gone crazy a few times
Spastic search button
I had the same problem with my search button. It only happened occasionally and didn't seem like a big deal. When it started happening more frequently, I went to the store and they pretty much dismissed it as my fault. Should have pushed it further, but it wasn't horrible yet. Finally got so bad I couldn't deal with it any more so went back to the store (not out of my 30day exchange) and they got on the phone with their warranty company and a new one is being sent out. I hope it doesn't have worse problems.
Hey guys.. So I've had my inspire for about 2 or 3 months now, and this thing is driving me apeshhh. Here is why...
For a few weeks now, the phone would randomly restart in the middle of doing something, always random. Sometimes while writing a msg in the stock facebook app. Sometimes when browsing market, sometimes when browsing using the web browser. Today I wanted to download Astro to see if the music I put on the phone went to external or internal SD. As soon as the download finished, the phone restarted. After it booted back up I looked through apps, and it never installed. I went back to market and searched it, pulled it up, and it shows installing.... let it sit for 5 minutes... nothing. Restarted, same thing. Pulled the battery... same thing... I can't cancel it, or try again. It will now no longer install anything else.
I figured maybe it needs to download something that it just doesn't have the network speed to use, and trying turning on wifi. IT WONT EVEN TURN ON. Under the settings menu to turn it on, it says error. When i tap on it, the error msg just goes off then comes back right away.
Anybody else experience this? I really wish SOMEBODY would come out with a decent f**king phone on the AT&T network.... I guess I can now add HTC to the list of people that can't build a decent phone. Just below Samsung... (What a POS line of phones they have released).
Anyway, phone is stock, not rooted, nothing turned off, completely stock.
How does the warrenty work now? I bought the phone outright, cash, $500... for this....
Thanks for any help.
Could be your phone mate. I've had this phone maybe about three months and haven't experienced those issues. Just might be a lemon you have. Where did you purchase the phone?

I bought the phone at an authorized AT&T retailer store. The kind you find in common shopping strips.
Try to see if they will give you a replacement

Back up your stuff and factory reset. If that doesn't work then either Root it and try a different ROM or get a replacement phone.
You might want to look at the thread in here about random shutdowns. It looks like the batteries on these phones can be the culprit. My phone randomly shutdown, sometimes restarted. I thought it was a ROM I had loaded at first. The problem got progressively worse no matter what ROM I used. It would do it maybe once a day & then within less than 3 weeks I have to keep it plugged in all the time. It happened when I opened a power-intensive app like navigation or a game. The battery is covered under warranty.
This issue seems to be rather uncommon, but it does exist.
Nothing compared to what Captivate owners went through.
Lemons do happen, but as suggested, I'd try another battery first. If that doesn't solve the problem, there shouldn't be any issue with getting a warranty replacement.
And that warranty replacement will, with near certainty, be a good one. Again, unlike the Captivate.
I've had mine for about 3 months with none of these issues. HTC phones for me have been great. Even their customer service and support if their products. And I have had Samsung, motorolla, and LG none at the same level of build quality. If you continue having problems get in touch with the HTC support they will help if not let u know if you can get a replacement.

I am a former captivate owner. That phone was so bad that it destroyed it's own internal memory. Every app continously force close, every process, upon startup one day. Restored a backup, got nothing, reflashed, got nothing, mounted it and formated it then ran a memory checking utility on my computer with it, and it showed like 46% of the sectors being bad, after then 2nd test somewhere in the high 50s. I promtly punched in the screen and folded the phone in half, and tore it into 2 pieces... So i think that may be why I'm relatively patient with this phone.. (that was also my 3rd captivate replacement). (Debating using a picture of the phone as-is in a DIY to fixing captivates and post it in that forum... get all your frustration out and buy a new phone.. ha ha.)
I will call HTC and see talk to a rep, maybe they know more about the problem and will be able to determine whether the phone or the battery is at fault.
Also, factory reset did not fix the wifi problem. Instead of immediately going back to error under it's status, and spent about 10 seconds trying to connect, then came up with error. This leads me to believe it's hardware related.
I will most likely push for a replacement phone then. I do have a concern with that though... My phone has never gotten wet, and only has a small indication of falling out of my pocket while sitting in a stadium chair (maybe a 12 inch drop onto concrete). Will this void my warrenty? The scar left behind is hardly noticeable, but if they looked for it, it will be seen. Another thing is, when I pull my battery cover off, there are 2 screws along the side, one is covered by a sticker that reads VOID, black sticker with white text. Is that some kind of indicator of water damage? I'm more familiar with white stickers turning red or pink from water damage... and as said, this phones never been wet.
Thanks again for the help.
At&t is usually good about replacing defective phones and will be faster than dealing with htc. You obviously have experience with at&t warranty having owned a captivate.

Those stickers are intact right? As long as their intact and not "punched in," which would indicate a screwdriver has penetrated in order to get the phone open, you should be good, as far as that's concerned.
Uhh well bad luck for you... I dont think this is a common problem...
Im guessing the iphone is on top of your list xD

Two days ago my WiFi stopped working. WiFi simply won't turn on. I tap it to enable and it's working on it, but it takes longer than usual and gives me an error. Just says error.. the next day I noticed my Bluetooth had the very same problem. Won't turn on.
This happened a day after I got the new white back cover. However, I don't see a connection as the problem persist with the original back cover on. I tried reflashing my ROM to no success. I am also having the
Anker 1900 mAh extended battery.
Any other tips before I go on with a full wipe of phone and cache?

Ello m8,
Had a similar issue only my wifi was the only wireless function which wouldn't work, i'd click it and then wait, and wait, and wait and then it would say error.
Tried literally everything, I eventually admitted defeat and gave my phone back to the HTC rep who gave it to me, I got it from HTC for free in the first place as i work with phones all the time and they wanted me to test it for them, they replaced it straight away.
My advice for you would be to check my thread and see if anything that me and a few others have tried (oh and pray that it's a software issue) and if that doesn't work then bite the bullet, and unroot the phone by flashing an official RUU and send it back to HTC.
This is my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302347
Good luck and i hope you get it working again.
Full wipe and everything to no success. Will send it back for repairs..

Hi,
Before you send it off,I had a similar problem with the wifi not working.
I opened the back and GENTLY lifted the two copper connectors just above the camera.
Bingo!
Wifi worked again.
Worth a try.

Shouldn't it be working without the "external antenna" as well?
Sent it back for RMA, changed both lcd screen (a single piece of dust) and rigid flex. Comes by air mail tonight!

So I think I have repaired my hardware until it is toast. A couple of weeks ago my screen cracked. I have repaired iPods and iPhones in the past so I felt confident ordering a new screen assembly (the whole deal, digitizer, LCD etc) and replacing it.
I put it all back together and it was running fine. I screwed up the front camera, but ordered another one.But I noticed that I hadn't totally closed the case and one of the clips wasn't closed. I pushed it shut and the connectivity on 3G (4G is spotty in my town) disappeared.
I opened it up and saw I had broken the 3G antenna. So I ordered another and replaced it. Still no signal most of the time. I talked to a guy at the Cell Phone repair shop and he suggested to get another antenna. So I did.
When it arrived yesterday I replaced the front camera and the antenna.
NOW
still no connectivity
AND
the unit will not stay on without external power. It powers up fine and says no power and shuts down. The battery icon shows no power and charging, but does not charge and shuts down the moment it is unplugged. The unit was running at about 50% power when I replaced the camera and antenna.
So any suggestions? I figure if I ship it to LG, they are going to laugh and say "No Warranty for You!" but I don't come up for a new subsidized phone for two months.
Sprint, Nexus 5, stock.
Maybe instead of talking to the guy at the cell phone repair shop, just give it to him. No one can advise without hands on...

He has never had his hands on a Nexus 5, and was hesitant to speak with any authority on either issue.
I just was seeing if either problem was one of those things people with experience breaking down the N5 would go "yeah it does that unless you do x and y."
OK well you need to give it to A professional. Any other mobile repair shop. "it could be x" just leads to you spending more money on stuff it isn't so my advice is get a professional assessment and don't take any "could be" from here

This post is part of the last ditch attempt to troubleshoot before I try and get Sprint to let me get a subsidized phone early. I figured that somehow it all went FUBAR.
Thanks for the advice.
Sure. Fair enough.

Apparently at least the battery issue is software related. I did a factory reset (couldn't hurt at this point) and the whole time during the reset and wipe (several minutes) the battery worked fine. The moment it booted into KitKat, I get the shutting down no power screen. After some experimenting, I notice it will stay on fine in recovery mode, into android and it shuts down.
I am googling, but open to suggestions.
hey guys i tried to turn on my tf300 last night but it wouldnt turn on at all, at first i thought the battery was dead so i put it on charge but the the led on the power button didnt come on so i thinking after 2 and a half years it was dead, but after trying a few random things i pulled the back off to see if anything looked obviously wrong but at first i didnt see anything, then i noticed a tiny little on/off switch that was set to on so i though i might as well try moving it to off and then when i tried to connect the charger the led flashed orange twice and when i tried to turn it on it flashed twice again so i flicked the switch back to on and it worked my tf300 lives again, so to anyone who thinks there tablet is dead try that as it might just work
Where is this on off switch located? I had my tablet die on me last year. I sent it to Asus but they tried to charge me double for the repair. I declined and had them send it back. When I got it back it started right up and has been working fine ever since.

It is to turn off power to components so you can service it. Like when replacing a camera, motherboard, etc.
