What methods have you tried?
The best way is with the hack kit.
The easiest doesn't mean its the best.

I've tried both but I get errors.

What errors? Can you be a little more thorough? Is it an error with the goldcard? During the root process?

Using Bubby's method was easy for me. Have you tried watching the tutorial?

I also used this method. First time, I think i soft bricked my phone because I missed a step in the haste and anxiety of the process but got my phone powered back up and took a second try at it and it worked flawlessly. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO FOLLOW EACH STEP TO THE TEE!!!!!

The best and easiest is the hack kit

Why do u want to Root? For sideloading? Or all the goodies in rooting?
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using The XDA app

I never tried the hack kit method but it just looked scary from reading the instructions.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

The hack is actually is pretty easy with v11. Literally it is open up the cmd file enter 1, create gold card through the provided link and put into folder, enter 2 let it do its thing and finally enter 3 and let it do.its thing. Took me about 15 min for the whole process.
I then flashed attn1stock Rom, while I read up on which Rom to try out. Capys kingdom Rom looks great but holding off as he works his magic
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

I used Bubby's 1 click and it is very very easy. All the instructions are clearly detailed out and just follow them to the word. It takes less than 20 mins including formatting the sd card and the gold card creation.

Disabling your anti-virus software is ESSENTIAL. If you don't, your AV will detect the rage file as a trojan and delete it. That means it will not get pushed to the phone and you will not have root access.
I learned that the hard way ;0)
Also, if you don't like to use the phone terminal app, you can get a copy of droid explorer and use the console in that app. You don't need to disconnect anything as it will use another copy of adb to access your phone.

The newest hack kit is easier then ever, I rooted an inspire in 10 mins. No problems

Dude if you're afraid of the hack kit, what's the point in rooting?
If you don't really want to learn adb and basic commands to push files to your phone, then keep it stock and under warranty.
Rooting isn't for everyone, with att it was almost necessary to be able to sideload apps, but that's no more since att got with the program.
I guess all I'm saying is that if you want an easy root, buy a nexus device. For every other device, there is some basic knowledge you MUST have first. Fortunately that's all in the inspire developer forum.
Read!!!!!! Then read some more...
The easiest way will not teach a newbie any of the real benefits of having root. Learn as much as you can, see if its right for you, then make a decision.
I'm not discouraging anyone by any means, I'm just trying to cut down on these pointless threads.
With soooooo many people and their grandmothers rooted now between bubbys and attn1s methods, these threads shouldn't exist unless the hack kit or super one click summons the dark lord chthulu in your basement...

The Hack Kit really is as easy as this...with bubby's method, you have to type in commands in terminal, format your sd card...etc.
Hack kit....no format, copy and paste...send an email...and then type in numbers 1, 2 and 3.

I did it with Bubby's method. I had errors in the terminal commands with the AceHack method. Dont skimp on the microSD card, get a high quality one. I had trouble with the stupid HP brand card while making the goldcard, it kept corrupting when I changed it from USB mode to charge only. Had to find a HP format tool to format it which took hours to do! After that its fine, just make sure you have plenty of time and do not rush.

Having a hard time rooting!

Ive tried both methods super one click and the manual one! and they still dnt work out for me. Is there a rom that will root your inspire and install custom roms like the one on the atrix(gingerblur)??

I tried the one click rooting and got left hanging with no sound on 4 occasions - I could never get it to work after the rage installation phase. I had s-off , but couldn't get root. Since I now was getting desperate, I used the hack kit and followed the unzipped instructions in the extracted folder. I had to get and load adb on my ubuntu pc to install Visionary on my inspire after that it was easy. I loaded Revolution rom and am happy with it. I'm a complete noob and have had my inspire only 3 weeks and have no other android experience. If I can do it, so can you.

I've had two inspires already and used both methods (one on each phone). They have both worked for me. You have to root in order to have custom roms. Have you followed the instructions to a T? What are you getting stuck on?

The part where i get stuck at is when i put in the command "hackerize-ace install-downgrade" after i put in those commands and press enter, it says not installed, what am i doing wrong?
Edit: when i try the one click method, the part where i get stuck is at hboot, it doesnt seem to find any images it constantly say "no image, wrong image"
anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure that you have the HTC drivers installed correctly. If you don't your computer cannot communicate with your device to push the downgrade rom to your phone. It doesn't matter which method you are using if the drivers are not installed correctly they both will not function correctly.

issue when attempting to run simple one click

i attempted to run http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406
and halfway through the process it stopped. it went up to the point of installing the update of pd98img.zip and it just stopped. so now my phone has been downgraded to 2.2 and it thinks its a desire. HELP!!!
Did it make it to the S-OFF step? Check top of HBOOT screen. If it says S-OFF, then your fine and probably just need to manually flash clockworkmod recovery to load a custom rom.

no it did not make it to S-OFF. it installed the pd98img. and nothing further.

You could start over again then, or if you're comfortable with linux and command line stuff, you could try and manually run gfree and get S-OFF, then move on. This link shows all the steps:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=AT&T_Inspire_4G:_Rooting
You can skip down to "Gaining Temporary Root Access" and follow those steps. gfree is the tool that does the actual work of obtaining S-OFF which is the most important step in the rooting process, but it only works with a specific kernel/radio combination, hence the need to downgrade first.
I've never used Bubby's method, but have used the ace hack kit. I'm pretty sure you could use it to finish up too as it runs in a step-wise fashion so you could pick up and go from the downgrade point. Grab it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
Attn1 also has an IRC chat node where there are always a lot of knowledgeable people willing to help you through the process in real-time:
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#liberatedAria
Yea I'm not familiar with Linux. I think.my best bet will be to just start from the beginning. Reinstall everything and hopefully that will work.

If you already have a gold card, use the ace hack kit. It is quicker and easier, especially if you already have the gold card. I was planning on using the one click but ended up rooting with the ace hack kit yesterday. The newest version 11 is simplified.

[Help] No Sound after trying to root Inspire 4G

I downloaded Bubby's One Click program (3-21-11_RC2.exe) and here is exactly what happened:
1. I know this may be my undoing but I did not turn off antivirus, it found a virus and cleaned it. Knowing my luck it cleaned something out that was critical in the steps.
2. I got the goldcard done (website was down the other day). I got it downgraded and now I have a working debranded Froyo Inspire 4g on 1.32.405.6. But with no sound.
Now something went wrong during a command prompt part and the program did not progress. I tried rerunning the program but it does not progress as it should.
What do I do now? I am going to try follow Cyanogen steps on their Wiki but is their an easier fix?
You need to completely disable or even uninstall your anti virus. Then, delete all of the one click root files. Then redownload, and start over.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
You could push rage to your phone to root it you can still root it with the downgraded rom. You don't have to start from the beginning. Just the part that pushes rage after you turn you anti virus off and redownload the gui.
The downgraded rom does not have the right audio drivers which is why you have no sound.
Also next time please search as there are many many many threads about this.
Mods please close.

I did a search and did not find the procedure. I also searched on the internet. The problem is I do not know how to fix it and rerunning the file does not work. when you do a search for no sound Inspire 5 threads come up and I did not know what to do still.
I will do a search for how to push rage to the phone. Remember the 500mb program does not exactly let you pick and choose the point where to start.
Edit: I will try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352

use the hack kit. you can even use the older hack kit. It doesn't really matter the size of the program, its how the program is scripted.
There are many threads of downgraded inspire with no sound, the solution is flashing a rom, though you cannot do that because you are not rooted nor are you s-off.
your options.
1. Flash back to stock and restart the whole process.
2. Push rage from adb, then run rage through turminal emulator.
3. Use the hack kit, because you can choose where to start in the proccess, ie. Pushing rage and rooting.
Try using the hack kit. Start with menu option number3.

I got it done.
I used this tutorial which involved:
Downloading Android SDK and gfree
Changing system variable path in Windows
running command prompt
doing a whole heap of adb commands.
I installed Rom Manager and flashed unity rom in and I am good to go
This is still going on??? I got one of the first Inspires when Costco was selling them even before AT&T would.
Same exact problem using the Bubby One Click method way back in February.
Had to use attn1's method from there on.
Would have thought the problem would have been fixed by now

Should I root?

I'm really on the edge with rooting. I really want to do it, but I'm new to android and this is my first android phone. I'm afraid I might brick my phone or worst. I do plan on doing google search of each step before performing it on the phone.
I am in the same position as you, I am scared to root but I know it will make my phone much better. I decided to wait it out until the bugs on the phone are worked out. This way if anything happens then you still have your warranty.

rooting is no big deal! with the revolutionary tool it's completely automated so not possible to brick unless you install the wrong rom on your device. Not to mention once you root you can unroot if you needed to send device back for warranty issues so it's a win-win situation
Do it. Just read all the how to's on revolutionary. Really, really easy to do.
The only device easier to root than this was my wife's G2x. Very simple root procedure. Just follow the steps. Also there are usually tutorials on YouTube. Watch them and then go for it.

Hi, I am at the same position like you. My sensation is first Android phone, and it is not Rooted yet. Probably I won't root it, becouse for me is enough fast and functionally. I would root it, if i wouldn't lose warranty. Ok, you can unroot it, but what if one day sensation just won't turn on? There is no chance to unroot it than.

if you follow the guide in the android development section, it's pretty damn hard to brick it the guide is noobproof. I looked through the guide, and I think none of the steps are "brickable" even if you mess up, unless you pull the USB cable in the middle of the process for no reason.

I dont understand. why newbs like you wanna root your phone... you have the latest fastest phone in the market with the latest firmware (almost) and you wanna root.....
I have a SGS2 and dont even feel the need to root it, and besides for customisation there are so many launchers and icon packs and stuff.
on the other hand if you guys really want Titanium back up an the other stuff then I understand :/
But still I would say not worth the rooting atleast yet.. may be when ICECREAM SANDWICH is OUT
All done and rooted. It was easy as I followed the steps. Just don't make the stupid mistake I made. Don't extract a file unless it tells you. I extracted every file I downloaded with winrar and I couldn't install them on the phone from the sd root, because i extracted them lol

That is how you learn the best just remember don't unrar the .zip's they are for the clockwork to install scripts and roms.
So when you open the file and you see something like META-INF/system you gone to far

You are so right. I learned so much just by rooting this phone.
.. another thing bothers me, as former Desire user I did rooted device with Unrevoked tool, for one reason: use titanium backup and move apps to sd card, but now with Sensation I did not have that problems, all apps I installed had an option "move to sd", and I mean all o them .. so, if I'm still not into changing stock rom, rooting is really not necessary?

Cant seem to root, someone pm and help me

I've tried the new supertool v3 and the aahk hack and it doesnt seem to do anything. It might be my computers fault cause it keeps giving me weird errors like my usb device has malfuctioned or windows doesnt recognize it. I'm lot and would like some assistance if someone could help
thanks,

finally figured out it was my other computer so i moved to a different computer and am using the supertool hack and i prepped it like it said and it seemed to do something, then i went to #3 cause it says attempt perm root so i clicked that and it seemed to be doing something and then flashed at me and said rooted! and my phone turned white and i had 4 option like bootloader, reboot, reboot botloader, and something else i forgot. I'm not sure what i should do from here so i clicked just bootloader and it took me to a different screen then i just restarted it and i downloaded terminal emulator and typed in su to see if it was rooted and it wasnt. I'm confused once my screen turns white and asks me what to do
By "Supertool", do you mean Bubby's root method?
Idk who its from, but i got it from this website and its called htc supertool and says it works on almost every htc phone
No he mean the HTC supertool from the general android section. Use the Ace hack kit. It is the only proven way that I know of. We have all used it at one time or another and as long as you read the manual you will be fine.

lol what are you saying? The Hack Kit is the best way to go. The OP has been instructed to use this tool and if he still runs into a problem, the OP should re-read the the first post in the hack kit thread and the manual to be sure he/she didn't miss a thing. If problems still persist I believe the IRC chatroom is still in service.
I should stop writing short replies, I mean you can install the live CD in the USB with unebooting or other tool, from there use the aahk
