HTC Thunderbolt to get Gingerbread/NFC - Thunderbolt General

Saw this article about the Tbolt getting Gingerbread in q2. Looks like there is an nfc chip inside the Tbolt? Very exciting either way.

There has been some talk that there are some contacts in the phone that aren't used for anything; suspecting it's for NFC. But don't think that's the case. If it is though, that would be a very welcomed feature.

Some people say that the support person just got a generic GB feature list....don't get your hopes up for NFC

If the launch of the Thunderbolt has taught us anything, it's that support has little to no real information.
There's a possibility that we'll see NFC support ... but I'd rate it as a very, very unlikely possibility. I'm not getting my hopes up.

Yea. When you look at the list, you can tell they did a simple 'copy and paste'. lol.
But yea, NFC is not something to expect. Not even HTC's newest EVO 3D has NFC, so it'll be a while before they start using it.

whats the point of releasing a phone with NFC when NFC is still only in trial markets. I dk about you, but the last time I checked, I can't use NFC anywhere I go.

Sorry, are you saying that phone manufacturers should not include a feature that hasn't been mass adopted yet? That's quite nonsensical. How does a feature become useful or desired if it's not available to be used.
That said, my TBolt is coming today. I'm not particularly happy about the fact that the Incredible 2 may be global and coming out in a month, but I'm still excited for my TB.

Why is anyone suprised to be getting 2.3 in q2? Dosnt seem like news to me.

A lot of people are signing 2 year contracts and will ride it out for the contract. It's not unreasonable at all to think NFC could be popping up within the time period of their contract and it being useful to have on the TBolt.

It's news alright, OLD news. Thanks Verizon!!!

If 2.3 comes out and we are running rooted roms/custom kernels will we have to re-root our phones or will the devs just release new roms/kernels that can be flashed in CWR?

I read quite a bit about NFC and it seems that all phones in the Japanese market are using them and it is being used to read all kinds of information in Japan. The average user there is using it for everything from transit fees to market purchasing simply using their phones.

This article is from march 27 I think we would if found out if it has a nfc chip

Conversation with samsung support about GPS

I had this conversation with a samsung support tech earlier today, you can make your own deductions but i think we are screwed because according to him the epic launched with the GPS fix already applied and as we all know from recent posts and videos the accuracy is still ****.....
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Dan'
Dan: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Dan: How may I help you?
Visitor: hi Dan, i have a captivate from ATT and the gps is terrible, is there a fix that is coming because i am really tempted to return this phone
Dan: I understand that you need to have update about GPS.
Dan: I am sorry for inconvenience caused to you.
Dan: Our support team as been working on issue with GPS.
Dan: We will have GPS update fixed by end if september.
Visitor: was the epic 4g or the fascinate launched with fix already applied to the gps ?
Dan: We have Epic released but we do not have any customers with GPS issue.
Visitor: so thge answer would be yes the fix is applied to the epic ?
Dan: To be honest yes.
Dan: However we will have GPS issue fixed.
Visitor: i have a freind with the epic and the gps is still terrible but from what you are telling me it's fixed.
Dan: I am sorry for inconvenience caused.
Visitor: ok, thanks for your time
Dan: We have many customers with Epic , but we did not have any issue with GPS.
Dan: Once we have update released it will be OTA,
Visitor: ok
Dan: Update will fix the issue.
Dan: Please let me know if I can be of any further help.
Visitor: that's it, thank you
Dan: You're most welcome.
Dan: It was a pleasure assisting you. Thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support.
According to the way that guy conversates, I wouldnt take much of what he said into consideration lol.
I have worked for Tech giant manufacturers (more then one) - and I know for a fact that the tech support people (usually 1st through 3rd level) have no idea about fixes or releases. They are not told until after things are out.
The idea that any of these guys would know that GPS in Epic is fixed, or was released with the fix that other Galaxy S phones are waiting for is doubtful.
Until an official statement is made, I won't believe anything I hear from anyone in Samsung support. Their job is to log an issue, be nice to the customer, and fix something if they can.
So why worry about it at all until some official notification comes out? If GPS is still broken, we can take our phones back as they are not meeting basic functionality requirements - if that is what people want to do.
Two months in and no GPS fix. I will reconsider before I buy a Samsung phone ever againg. Product support suck.

God you people cry way too much. Why does gps on your phone bother you so much? I am a truck driver and need directions EVERY DAY. But unlike you i guess i have the ability to read a map. And even with sketchy gps it gets me in the general direction i gotta go. Stop all the crying already. Want great GPS get a damn gps unit. I have a few i will sell you since i dont use them anymore. And return your worthless phones. Rant /off
GPS on the Samsung Eternity worked great. Wonder what the difference is.
Am I missing something? My GPS works great, I've had no problems at all. If there's anything I can provide somehow to help you guys, let me know.
Hell, I've even gotten a good signal sitting in my living room; on Google maps it even showed my location in my house properly.
If there are files or something I can pull from my phone for you, I'll do what I can.

This is so true, agree 100%. Plus, I think you kind of led him to say that the Epic had the fix by you actually mentioning it. He said yes and that was pretty much it.

Agreed, anything outside of a building and the GPS works great. I've been using it to geocache, and also have a boating gps app installed and used it flawlessly this past weekend. I can drive anywhere in my car and the GPS will not lose me once.
The only time I get a long signal search is after a week of not using the GPS function, then it takes only about 30 sec's to lock on.
Smokestack, I don't know about you but when I purchase a product I like when everything works. That's why I bought it, why put a non functioning gps and by the way, I am a private pilot so I read a lot more complexed maps than you, I dont follow interstates, I follow victor airways...

I wouldn't rely on the GPS in my Captivate or any phone for that matter for flight ops. But, I do agree that if the phone says it has GPS, it should have GPS working when you buy it at the store. Doesn't matter if it's a nice-to-have feature or a core function. If it says it has GPS, then it should work.
I am hoping that this was a last minute configuration/software defect that was re-introduced following QA. There's no way a phone should be able to exit QA with such an alarmingly big severity 1 defect.

Dude. Cool. You answered my question. That's why I asked. I personally couldn't care less about the gps. it works good enough for me.
Sorry you broke your eternity. i had mine for two years. was dropped/thrown/punched countless times, the moisture label was bright red, but i never had a single issue with that phone other than when using opera mini and sometimes i would click a link and it would just refresh the page. a buddy of mine got one shortly after i did. he finally just broke his screen last week. cracks all through it and a couple "chunks" from the screen gone, but it still works. still texts on it like crazy. that thing is sturdy.
Smokestack...... Would you not complain if you bought a truck and found out it had the wheels missing?
I bought a device that is supposed to have GPS but doesn't. All I want is what I paid for. My reason for wanting it does not matter. I will never buy another samsung phone. If it hours totally unresolved I will never buy anything Samsung.
I totally believe this was/is an intentional scam. Then on top of it the reduced speed and forced data plan change.
I'm not happy and wish I could send this otherwise good phone back.

Bad analogy. A truck needs wheels to be able to serve it's purpose. A phone doesn't need GPS to work as a phone. Maybe saying something along the lines of air conditioning, it's an added bonus, such as the GPS. don't mind me, just sayin....
gotta kill these last few minutes at work some how. And you really think it's an intentional scam? take off the tinfoil hat...

Return your phone then. If you are out of the 30 days, you still have a valid case for returning it - but watch you say:
- GPS is known issue that Samsung has acknowledged.
- reduced speed? Where? HSUPA was never spec'd so you won't win that one - just because other phones have it, doesn't mean all do.
- forced data plan change - clearly spelled out what data plans work with the phone - if you don't like it, don't buy it.
So your GPS complaint is valid, and if the phone doesn't serve its advertised purpose then return it. There is no international conspiracy. maybe samsung knew about the GPS issue before they shipped, maybe not. Dev's are flashing new firmwares all the time - and it could have slipped through a rushed QA cycle.
Instead of complaining do something about. If the product doesn't work take it back. The iFools should have done this.
I think it's best for us to keep reminding Samsung that this is important. I just did here: http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobile
Hello to all,
I did take my first phone back to att because of gps problem, we try 5 phones before she got one with working gps it takes up to 10 seconds to lock the signal.

2.2 Finally starting to roll out to the US...

Samsung Vibrant to start getting Froyo on Jan. 21 -- as in tomorrow!
That's right folks... the Vibrant's party has just about started.
Hopefully we'll be within the next 6 months.
Sweet, can't wait to see if we get it too! Hopefully not within 6 mo like you say!
Still betting on St. Patrick's Day for Craptivate and AT&T.

I found the most interesting section to be
So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features.
"It was a quality control and timing issue," Brodman said. "The biggest challenge is integration and customization."
In the future, T-Mobile aims to update all of its phones to new versions of Google's Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public, Brodman said. The delay comes from having to integrate manufacturer skins and T-Mobile's own features, such as Wi-Fi calling.
How long does it take to lock down the market, install and lock down bloatware, and take away tethering?

i would agree...i think AT&T has had it and trying to "fine tune" "bloat" it.
Also the have probably been hesitant to release it without a way to lock/disable the Tethering and Mobile AP stock features of 2.2.

Most people that report recent replacements have said GPS works fine. Never hear if this this the normal GPS works for 2-3 days after a fresh flash or they actually did anything to the phone.

Yea, after using Cog and Perception, not so sure if I really want stock 2.2 from AT&T or not. You know it'll be loaded up with bloatware and have useful stuff stripped out from it, such as wifi and usb tethering.
But at least then DG will have an official ROM to start doing mods to.

I agree. Please title your threads appropriately OP. "So...." is a title that should get you banned for a week.
If you know that AT&T is going to release better products down the road (and you do, if you're thinking about waiting 6 or so months) then you have to decide whether or not its worth it to get an HSPA+ phone or wait for the inevitable LTE devices to rear their heads. Personally, I'm thinking of getting an Inspire 4G retail when they're launched as a birthday present to me from me, and then possibly using my upgrade later on when an LTE device shows up. It's all a matter of whether it's worth the wait to you.
i used my update on my craptivate with my 2.1dumpdate1. if it wasnt for you devs then i would be pissing on samsungs doorstep right now. i think ill either get the atrix or a nexus s since dev phones are about the only thing guarunteed to get the latest stuff. paying full price anyway. id like to see motorola drop a high powered device like the atrix but wrap it up all tanky like the defy.

Exactly. See, I already have the Captivate now which, although won't be the best thing on the market soon, is still a damn good phone and @ 1.28ghz it keeps up just nicely with the best if them.
I have an upgrade and the question now is; what do I get? Since the Atrix was a flop (pricing and required tethering) im definitely waiting for MWC to see whats coming; the new Samsung phone should be great.

I can say that it does come from verizon and its not your everyday cs rep or a store employee. I have known the person since I'm 5 (41 Now) and they have been with verizon 15 years and has worked his way up from tech to a nice position.
I can also add that they were looking into making the maintenance update part of the GB upgrade but were having issues with it so as of now they are two seperate ota's.
Im sure some of the devs here can check and see if this has any validity. I cant get him to confirm a GB date but he said nothing will be set for GB until current issues are dealt with..

In my pants...
Been using multiple GB 2.3.3, and 2.3.4 roms, including alpha CM7, with very little issue. I would expect official release soon if I didn't know Verizon so well.

The EVO has been out a longer than the thunderbolt, and its just now getting it. I'm not saying it will take that long for the tbolt to ft GB, I'm just saying don't get your heart completely set on getting it real soon. Who knows these days really..

I hope it doesn't have the issues the Droid X has with the ota update that rolled out.

All updates have issues so it's going to be pretty much unavoidable. Factory resets can generally clear up most of them though.

Skype 2 video available

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.

Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

Im not familiar with knowing the ins and outs of editing an apk but this might be a start for someone who does
Probably requires GB.... I would think
yep. the official requires gb and in the list of device check. with device check removed, almost all with gingerbread can use it.
man, so much we can't do without gb. This phone should have launched with it.

I know. WTF on that?
the only true gripe I have with android is its similarity with linux, fragmented operating system. I mean we buy these $500+ phones and a week later I find some inferior phone doing more than we are, it blows my mind sometimes!!!

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

I work for AT&T and I can tell you that we (the pions in the store) think its crap too. The lockdowns, the non-market app bs, etc. I do hope google puts its BIG foot down one day and steps up to plate on this issue.

I think it'll come and come soon. Now that android is becoming the mainstream people will catch on and support the carrier who is on top of it

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I have always been one to read through forums daily but have never gotten too good at participating, as you might tell as I have been a member for 3 years and have very little posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

Click "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread. Choose subscribe thread. Choose your poison.
That should set you up so you get notified.
