I just ditched my Notion ink Adam for the mighty Xoom. I'm glad to say I'm impressed. Now for the reason behind my post. Is it normal to see a diamond like pattern(what I suspect to be the digitizer) behind the glass.... I first noticed it while playing with the youtube app. The deep black colors gave way to what I thought was just noise from the video, but after looking at it on an angle with the screen off you can definitely see the pattern.
Is this normal? Last I remember seeing a digitizer was on my Mogul.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
A small moire type pattern or a large contrast difference pattern. I have seen the large pattern occasionally. It doesn't seem to interfere with actual usage.
it the screen capacitive touch sensors (dunno the technical term). i can see it on just about every touch screen except the ipad - go figure.
the 101 is a crosshatch, the nook color are dots, this xoom is a crosshatch with some kind of checker pattern.
I figured it was normal, just didn't expect it to be so profound. It has no hindering effect on user experience. I hope people don't take this and blow it out of proportion as a flaw...lol

They probably will.. lol I've seen people make issues of of something trivial like a button squeaking when you press it.. I can already picture people saying "my xoom screen is messed up"

yeah the only time you notice it will be on dark scenes/backgrounds with ambient light and holding it at a certain angle. the 101 is more predominant but it's really not a bother.
Bad LCD panel?
Hi everyone. I just bought my wifi-only model from Staples today (Sunday). I noticed a little "problem" with the LCD panel when I turned it on, but disregarded it.
While watching a movie, I noticed the issue in full force. When a movie file is playing and there is a black background, I can see "mini-panels" and it's very distracting. I don't see this on a solid black background without media playing so I'm guessing it's something with the backlight. I'm attaching a photo (glad I was able to capture it this way!).
Anyone else seeing this? I didn't look close enough at the store's display.
And so it begins...

that's the capacitive sensors. i wonder how apple hides theirs.
Ive got them too, didnt notice it on any other devices ive used but its just the capacitor mesh that moto decided to use. My glass almost seems wavy as well (like not 100% flat) so not sure what my feelings are on that yet...
my guess on the waves is that it helps curb reflections.
Yeah what you guys are seeing is definitely the digitizer. On most touch screen devices you can see the digitizer at the right angle and with bright enough light (ie sunlight seems to bring it out the most). My guess is if you test this is a lower light setting you wont see any of the digitizer.
I have also noticed the digitizer on the xoom screen relatively easily.
well, ive just noticed the waves. i usually see small waves on screens but these are warps. good thing i'm trying to pay attention to the image on screen instead of the reflection, lol.
I have seen little warps on the bottom of the screen like 1/3 or the way to the middle and 2/3 to the right side (like a couple inches off center on each side). They are also in the same relative position on the top. My guess is this is how the screen is attached? It would be great if someone could take a good look at theirs, it may take looking at the reflection of light in those spots to actually see the warp, but I would really like to know if it is just mine or it is on all of them. And BTW I see the digitizer too, but it is worse on my HTC inspire 4g.

Has anyone else noticed the large amount of ghosting the Xoom display has? Its very prevalent to me, especially when a red or black object moves across the screen (red angry bird (especially when zoomed in), red icon on homescreen while scrolling (pew pew), black bars between gallery images, etc).
Its bothering me to the point of returning it (and looks like I'll have to eat the 15%/$90 restocking fee at Amazon). I'm wondering if the Asus Eee Pad Transformer or Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9/10.1 will have a better response rate. I know they both should have a better viewing angle with their IPS displays.
I have an ISF certificate and don't see any ghosting...
Really? Could it be I have a defective unit. I just find it hard to believe I would be the only one to have/see this.
Listen enable flash, then open this site on your xoom try to go full screen and tell me your findings.
http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/testsoftware/ghosting.html
Btw I have ghosting as well, but never noticed it on before. Thanks for the heads up. Ill reply back when I get more info.
I have no ghosting at all on my nexus one, the screen size have a huge effect on ghosting btw, but just an fyi.
2 Days ago I've been playing DoodleJump on the Xoom, and noticed the game running faster (you can test this) ofcourse you'll have to be familiar with the usual pace of it on the phone version of the game.
I've suspected the frame rate per second to be higher on the Xoom than the Nexus one...which could also be factored in, in refresh rate and then added to the whole performance. Which could spark problems like the ghosting we are seeing.(if you ever tried emulating a PXS on a PC you'll know what I mean)
I know that the screen response time could be a major factor but I couldn't get any information regarding the specifics of this screen. (btw you could be holding two Xooms with different screens)
So my guess for now, is the problem is with the refresh rate on the screen or the way the JIT compiler emulates...which could be solved with an update or a software tweak. Take what I said about the software side of this with a grin of salt
wow horrendous ghosting!!!!! (Using the ghosting test above)
Bumping this thread. Just noticed this on my xoom! Is it normal?
Another test : try going to http://tinyurl.com/xoghost and watch the drumsets at the bottom of the page and the guy in the second last row of second page ghost when you scroll the pages up and down.
Sorry... just saw the responses to the thread. For some reason my email notifications were off.
I ended up returning my Xoom to Amazon while still in the 30 day window so I can't do any further testing. One of the primary reasons for returning was due to the screen ghosting (and overall screen quality). I've also got my eye on the Asus transformer with the IPS display, but it keeps getting delayed. I might just wait until fall reign the next wave of tablets come out... maybe something with a tegra 3

It would seem so, It's absloutely terrible using the ghosting test linked. I'm getting a ghost the length of the actual cube trailing on my screen, in full screen. =/
ASUS Transformer doesnt suffer that much with the links you posted.
There are two different panels for xooms, one being AU optronics brand (typically sited as the cheap/crappy display) and the Sharp brand display which is supposed to be better.
I have the AU Optronics display and going to the ghosting URL linked previously I get terrible ghosting.
Can anyone with the sharp display test this and see what they see?
You can determine the display type by typing dmesg into a term emulator.
Sharp panels say: 'lcd_manfid=SHP'
AU panels say: 'lcd_manfid=AUO'
Now since dmesg is the kernal ring buffer you might need to reboot before you see it in your dmesg output.

I'm not surprised by the ghosting on these displays. Every mobile device I've owned has ghosted horribly. Even a lot of monitors around the office do it, but people don't seem to notice or care. I've always used 2ms displays at my home setup because of this. That being said, I paid about twice what other displays of similar size cost. People don't want to see the price of their precious electronics going up without seeing more nice specs on the list. A low response time display won't sell as well as a faster CPU or RAM... If you find a market that is looking at those 2 specs then make them great. Cheap out on the rest.
Actually this ghosting effect is due to the speed at which the pixels can change from one color to another. Some displays have issues with different color transitions.
This is something that doesn't happen on my nexus ones amoled display. And most of my monitors that I have also don't have this issue, at least to the degree of the xoom. It is disappointing to see how cheap the xoom display is.
I bet my droidx doesn't suffer from this either.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I began to notice ghosting on the screen, especially on the desktop after I upgraded to 3.2 Honeycomb.
If anyone can test whether the effect exists in 3.0 and 3.2, I appreciate it.

I just think this ghosting thing is not a big deal.
if I apply light pressure on back of tablet about two inches above asus logo it looks like something is pushing against the screen you get all those rings and what looks like a rainbow effect.
I noticed it when docked and moving the screen back and forth the same effect occurs.. is this just cos the unit is thin and flexes, does anyone else see this behaviour?

I tried what you did and I don't see anything, how big/noticeable is this 'rainbow effect' you're talking about on your tablet? Something doesn't seem right.
Going further if I simply press on the touch screen in that area I get the same effect somethings definitely wrong, when screen is on I get big yellow splodges from the backlight. The screen must be moving in the chassis I guess

I think you're describing the general effect of applying pressure to an LCD screen. They all do it to some extent. Unless the effect is permanent, it's nothing to worry about.

I disagree, I tried and failed to replicate what he did. Also, my tablet has the bleeding issue too, so I don't think those are directly related. (I have light spots and edge bleeding, but don't have the rainbow effect.)
Its so annoying cos its ones of the newer serial numbers and there is hardly any bleed or anything, but in normal use touching the screen in one place seems to compress something and I get rainbow and big blobs of yellowy light about 1 inch above where I touch/press or if I move screen back or forward in dock or press against back of tablet.. Lets see what asus cs say.. Might have to go for refund and defect to samsung but I don't want to

iPad2 has some of the same issues, light bleed, etc and some new ones, cracking screens. It is tough to make a screen that is high res, light weight, thin, and can stand up to people poking at it all day long.
Hi all,
So I just got my Transformer this evening and am hoping and praying for no issues.
I am wondering about something when I turn on the unit however already... I cannot tell if this is normal or not.
On the lower part of the welcome screen about maybe a 1/4 way up from the bottom there seems to be a faint light bar/line that goes across from one side to the other in this area.
I cannot tell if this is part of the welcome screen or if this is a flaw. Everything as far as leaks goes and such looks great from all sides but this concerns me. If it's part of the welcome design screen then great! If not I think I obviously have a problem with the screen. I hope this is not the case.
I have attached the best image I could take with crap camera showing the line. I apologize for it not being the best quality.
If anyone can assist I'd truly appreciate it. I don't want to test it on other screens as I wanted to let my Transformer charge completely before getting into it as it states. What is a good amount of time to let it charge to get the most out of my battery?
Thanks again for all help offered.

You can't get a clear idea about light bleed with a background like that. Download a black image from the web and open it from the gallery app, that will give you an almost black screen. Light leak is most noticeable on a black screen with brightness set to max.

It's definitely not extremely blatant on this photo but you can certainly see it.

That's the background ... if there is a problem it will most likely be at the most extreme edges, it almost looks like there might be some on the bottom but that could be camera angle.
You already opened the box and took off the plastic, going past the welcome screen isn'tgoing to affect return policy or anything. Even if it did you can do a full wipe and be back to that screen in minutes.

Tough question. Probably? I think all have it to some degree, but like my new one I have to put a blanket over my head, turn the screen all black, and turn the brightness all the way up to notice it. If you don't notice it or it doesn't bother you it is just an aesthetic problem that shouldn't ever get worse (or better). If it does and you can exchange it I would recommend doing that instead of sending it to Asus. There are plenty of horror stories about people sending it for repair.
However I would wait until you only have a week left to send it back to see if you forget about it. Some people have gone through nearly a dozen returns looking for a perfect one. I mean we deserve to get one without flaws, but sadly these screens are so prone to bleed that it seems to make some people just give up on tablets...

Yeah I can understand that. That is a great answer.
I noticed there is also noticable bleed on the left side as well near the bottom as well as the bleed noticed on the bottom all closer to the center and left.
Probably want to try out another one with there being more than just a little at the bottom. What do you think degen?

Like I mentioned I am on my second one, although I also had a blotch in the middle of my screen. If it bothers you now there's a good chance it always will. Sadly it's a roll of the dice. However having got mine from Amazon I figured I would rather return it then just regret it. Lightbleed SHOULDN'T exist but sadly you may have to settle with it to some degree but not a lot of it. If it bugs you while warching movies, playing games, or web browsing I would try exhanging it. Make sure to try it at night if you aren't sure. That's when it will be the most noticeable.

Thanks a lot Degen. I appreciate your help.
Hi guys, while I love this phone we all know that it has a few little... quirks. I think I can live with most of them although the overheating this is really getting on my nerves. It really doesn't need to get that hot. Anyway, back on topic. I haven't seen this mentioned here so thought I would ask if anyone else thinks this is normal. Has anyone else noticed light seeping through from both sides, and also the top of the screen. Take a look at my pics and see what i'm talking about. I have the AUO panel, and just wanted to know if I should bother exchanging it. If this isn't normal then I'll take it back today.
Please let me know what you think.
Edit - I added the Ubuntu Wallpaper so that you can see how it is brighter in the middle but, it doesn't glow in that rectangular shape the way it does in the pic the first pic that I posted.
I just made a video showing the halo effect. Notice how the glow is always there (depending on what's on the screen as you don't really notice it when something bright is on the screen)
Notice how the backlight bleeds when there is a light object near the edge of the screen. I don't notice any bleed when the screen is all black. Is this normal?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KqudgfrSB8
I see it but it also looks part of the wallpaper...
Download dead pixel test from the market > set your brightness all the way up > now in dead pixel get the black wallpaper > check for bleed in a dark room.
I'd have to shoot a video to show you. If you move the wallpaper around in the gallery, you can see the edges light up more. I'll try to shoot a video and post. Be back in a minute.
Sorry to be off topic but whhat case is that, can you send me a link of it

I'm exchanging it today.
Good luck, hopefully you can test it out in the store and decline it if there are any issues. Shoots, check to make sure all the little bugs are gone from the new unit before you leave the store!
I've seen 4 in person and none of them had any bleed. You should exchange that unit as it is pretty bad. I have seen plenty of G2X's that looked like that though.

Mine has it too. bottom right side and bottom. Only visible when watching full screen video that's letterboxed. Doesn't bother me though.
I notice it gets worse when I flex the tablet by holding it in landscape by the bottom left corner so I kind of wonder if in part it is more predominant on that corner for my tablet because that's the primary way that I hold the tablet. It's not like I can flex it the other way to get rid of the bleeding completely though so I don't know if I can reverse it. If memory serves, out of the box I already had some bleed anyhow. This is my second Note Pro and the first one had bleed on the bottom as well.
I'm sure you'll get responses from some who have no light bleed, some of which actually do but it doesn't bother them and some who really do not have any bleed. It's up to you I guess if it is worth the effort and waiting to try to get a perfect one. For me it simply is not . .
Thanks.. can any one post any pictures of their tablet?
I have attached mine under full brightness, total darkness and black background.. it is slightly exaggerated in some phots as it depends on what angle you see the screen

The only 'sort of' light bleed I have is from the two softkeys when they light up.... Other than that, none whatsoever. (Can't take a photo as I can't imagine they'll shut down the entire train to give me some darkness...)
