Tether the GTab via Bluetooth? - G Tablet General

Does the GTab or any ROMs support tethering to a 3G connection via bluetooth? My phone (iPhone 3GS) will not act as a WiFi tether unless I jailbreak it, which I would prefer not to do with my ignorant yet anal official iphone carrier (GTA Guam).
They say the 3GS can't tether via bluetooth, but I've found information to the contrary on the net. Thus, I know the phone supports it, at least with an iPad. Don't know if the GTab or ROMs support it, and I've not kept up with bluetooth specs in years. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did run a search, but apparently used the wrong keywords. Thanks.

Internet via bluetooth?

I am going to appologize in advance if this has been covered or a noob question, but I was wondering if I am able to connect this with another phone via bluetooth as possibly use that phone as a modem to let the 7510 get online? Reason being is this 7510 doesn't have T-Mobile 3G and I would be trying to use 3G off my other phone. I know this is possible on my laptop so the question has no arrisen since I am debating on either getting this 7510 or the Shift. I notcied that the shift uses Vista/Xp so I figured what ever my laptop could do as far as connections, I would be able to do with that as well.
If anyone could shed some info on the topic, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
I'm sure this is possible- a lot of older PDAs used Bluetooth to connect to a mobile phone, and use the GPRS connection. Most 3G phones have a connection setup for BT Modem.
It would be pretty slow though- even if BT2 is supported on both devices you are unlikely to get anywhere near 3G speeds.
Does the Shift have the US T-Mobile 3G capability? If so it would be an easier setup!
Ya, no the shift doesn't have T-Mobile bands thats why I wanted to tether. I just wanted a small device to do emails/web/GPS/Music seperately. I'm thinking either the 7500 or so or a internet Tablet Device.
The 7500/7510 could do this, but forget about streaming music over a Bluetooth phone pairing. Locally stored music would be fine though though the wired headset or over Bluetooth A2DP.
But, if all you really want is a small devcie for those needs, why not opt for a smaller Windows Mobile device that does support the T-Mo 3G band?
There isn't a T-Mobile device that runs on 3G for the T-Zones data plan. Hence why I am actually using the Sony Ericcson TM506 for the data and trying to figure out with device I want more, which I am leaning more towards the Advantage than the N810 since its Windows Mobile and more customizible.
Ah- OK. Just seen that T-Mo use 1700 band for upload and 2100 for download, and no WM devices support that combo

Wifi Tethering and Mobile Hotspot Confusion

Heres what I understand:
$30 Unlimited Data plan to the phone (as usual)
Optional $20 Wifi Tethering with 2GB cap (through Verizon App?)
When 2.2 comes out, will the built in Android Wifi hotspot be removed? Or will it work without the $20 wifi plan?
They have to disable it. Otherwise, who in their right mind is going to pay for something when there's software already on the phone that allows you to do it?
I guess I'll just be sticking to PdaNet. Nice try though, VZW.
Yeah, darn. Hopefully the geniuses here can find some way to reenable built in wifi tethering so that vzw cant tell that its being tethered. I want wifi on my ipad
does this mean there is a high chance this phone will be un-rootable? because of http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
2.2 source code may be released to the carriers but they can change it however they want to fit thier hardware and needs.
So if they want to take out the free wifi hotspot capabilities in 2.2 for the X or other devices and still charge for wifi hotspot capabilities with 2gb caps for 20 bux then guess what, they can.
PDAbnet may do wifi tethering but that is different from wifi hotspotting to multiple devices
remember that once rooted you can flash different roms and install any apps to your hearts content

This doesn't really have any bearing on whether the phone will be unrootable - IMO every phone is rootable, it is just a matter of finding an exploit... Hopefully this phone will be easier than the last one I had (Droid ERIS :-/)
This is not correct. The Milestone has been rooted but no access to the bootloader has been had meaning no custom Tom's.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Here is a few things to keep in mind..
The Verizon 3G app is infrastructure, thus it works with things like PSP and Nintendo DS, which is why i keep it. The Wireless tether apps are only ad-hoc for now.
From what ive been told, the verizon app loads a different firmware before running.
Now, what verizon can do and has done in the past, especially on windows mobile phones, is take out a feature like wifi hotspot in an OS, and put their own in its place.
do NOT be surprised if VZW does the same thing with 2.2 and yes, it is 20 a month for a measly 2gb on the hot spot app, but wireless tether is unlimited for 30
this is why i ONLY use the hot app for PSP and DS and the rest wi-t for root
not to mention, i am not even sure if the 2.2 is ad-hoc or infrastructure.. anyone know?
This is how the USB Tethering works for Verizon's 2.2 FroYo build, and I'll safely assume that it'll be the same for WiFi:
When you connect via USB Tethering, the phone directs you to a Verizon webpage (https://dunsp.vzw.com/selfProvisioning/SelfProvisioningServlet) which informs you of the package costs, and gives the phone number to add the package.
Interestingly enough, this only occurs if you tether it's 3G connection and not it's WiFi connection.
You may wonder why you'd want to tether a phone's WiFi connection via USB.. well.. personally I just pay for the Boingo mobile hotspot ($7.99/mo), which will work on my iPad or Droid, and if I need to use my PC, I tether my Droid's WiFi to my laptop. Saves $9.99/mo.

[Q] 3g modual

can a 3g modual be used on the g tab. if so which ones work thanks all for help
How about...?
Hopefully this isn't too off-topic but why don't you just use the 3G connection from your phone (I assume you have an android phone)? That is what a lot of folks with the gTab do now.
I have a rooted Droid X phone that I've installed Wireless Tether on and since I have an unlimited data account with Verizon I turn my phone into a 3G hotspot and connect my gTab to it to surf when I'm out and about. This works great for me since I always have my phone with me.
Anyway, hopefully this info helps as I do not know of a way to add a 3G module to the gTab. Some folks have been discussing using a 3G or 4G usb dongle modem but I don't think they've been able to get that to work yet.
Good luck,
Steve

Absolutely agree!
I was in the quest of finding 3G module for my tab, preferably GSM, not CDMA (Werizon).
Later on I started counting and something dawned on me....LOL
If I install that module on G-Tab.... I have to pay for the access...
Since I already paying for my phone data plan, it would be a double whammy..
I have HD2 running WinMo 6.5 and WMWiFiRouter, which is the great program to tether to G-Tab.
Hope it helps.

WiFi Hotspot for phones that cannot be rooted

I have an HTC EVO Shift, which, because it comes from Sprint already running Gingerbread 2.3.3, cannot be perm rooted and takes some serious hoop jumping to temp root, and is pointless if you swap batteries a lot, which I do.
I want to use my Shift as a WiFi hotspot without paying Sprint the ridiculous $30 per month that they charge for very limited hotspot privileges (5g limit. Verizon charges $10 for the same).
I have used solutions like easytether, for unrooted (unrootable) devices, that permit WiFi hotspotting by giving you an app for your phone, and a driver for the device to be tethered, but this is ONLY for Windows or MAC. What about iPad? I'm not a programmer, but I know from experience, that there are a LOT of drivers for the (jailbroken) iPad that do some pretty obscure stuff (i.e., including allowing it to use and be powered by legacy devices and cables). So, writing something to make EasyTether, or a similar app, allow Android to iPad WiFi tethering, would not be that hard.
I am sending this to the main group, because the EVO Shift running 2.3.3, cannot possibly be the only defacto un-rootable Android device, and I cannot be the only one who wants to tether his Android to his iPad.
Is there anyone out there who could modify the driver for one of the current apps?
Thanks!

[Q] Use android device as a Bluetooth controller.

Hi,
I have been searching for around 3 months on and off for this with no luck so I figured I would ask.
I would like to use my android phone to make calls through a dumbphone through bluetooth. I would like to drop mine and my wife's data plans to save $720 per year. But since we have smart phones, Verizon will not let us keep using our smartphones with no data plan and only stick with wifi. We have wifi access almost everywhere we go(home, work, restaurants, church, etc.) and would be fine sticking with wifi for internet.
So here is what I am thinking. Get the smallest dumbphone with bluetooth I can find, use that for my verizon plan. Then use my Droid 2 to control that phone, i.e. send and recieve calls/texts.
Has anyone seen this done or do I need to start getting familiar with the android SDK start playing with the android bluetooth stack?
Thanks,
