I have an unlocked Rogers Captivate currently running 2.1 (JL2). I am trying to update to 2.2 with Kies. I have tried the newest version and also 1.53. Kies recognizes the phone however it will not update, it says "This version of the device cannot be updated".
I have searched for this but have found nothing that has helped me.
Try using a different USB port, I tried using the ports on the front of my PC, no go, moved it to the rear ports and it worked.
No change.
This is what I get.

Maybe try unrooting your phone with "one click lag fix" from the market and try again.

Try it on a different computer. I tried mine on three different machines and the third one worked. WIN 7 with i3 chipset.
I tell you it was frustrating ! So keep trying ... it will work!

Yes, you really have to try different computers, different USB port and cable. I have tried 4 PC, and got it upgraded on laptop running win 7 32 bits. Good luck

Were you getting the same message in Kies?
The problem isn't Kies, as it's connecting and reading your device just fine. The problem is the firmware build on the device that Kies can't update. If you want 2.2, you can get it by flashing the one in my sig.

Yup, I got it saying I already have the latest ones, got it updating and stopped it self with error or it doesn't even detect my phone. Until I used win7 32bits laptop, and luckily got it upgraded. But honestly, I'm so disappointed with the stock froyo. After upgrading, it was slower than eclair in general, including UI, games and everthing. Especially worst is the browser speed. I couldnt even scroll on big contents sites, like phonearena.com or pocketnow.com. cuz of the flash. I bet even u successfully update it, you would wanna flash a custom rom to gain more speed or battery. Just like the same path i went through.

Why would this be though? If 2.2 is available and my phone is on an older firmware why would it not offer the update? Thats just messed up.
Anyway I did find the Rogers 2.2 update and flashed with ODIN, it was pretty easy. Does your stock ROM have all the Rogers crap removed?

I had similar experience with 2.2 on my Vibrant. I found by turning plugins to "on demand" made browsing much better. Although the Captivate is far less laggy than the Vibrant, it runs much smoother to me.

If you flashed to 2.1, there's a chance that something is preventing Kies from reading it as true stock firmware. A setting or file could be missing. My ROM doesn't have anything added or removed, that would defeat the purpose of a stock ROM made for warranty purposes. Rogers didn't add much and if you don't want the few apps they did add, they're easy enough to remove with TiBu.
Go into your registry and delete any entries for KIES. Then reinstall the driver package from Samsung. It will work then.

First off thank you for the easy root But now I have an issue, the SD card wont work, looks like it wont find the extension anyone know how to fix this? Ive used many different card and none read but I know all work. Without this I cant do a ROM
Try reformatting the card? Did they work before you rooted? do they work again if you unroot?
They worked before the root, I didn't unroot yet. When you out then in the phone and go to the SD card setting it shows nothing. Just says unavailable. So I can't even format it on the phone. I've formatted them in many ways on the pc too
HTC EVO = my best friend
did you try pulling out the sdcard and putting it back in? does it show a blank sdcard, or no sdcard at all?

I want to update GB and new baseband but since I heard so many horror stories about bricking the phone through official update, I still do not dare to try. Besides, I live in Europe and if I bricked the phone it's kinda problematic to return in to the States.
Am I last G2X owner on Froyo???
Nope, i am running stock froyo just rooted and modified to my liking withbout any bloat ware or the OTA software. I havent upgraded because my phone runs like a champ the way it is. Just the other day i was playing Metal Gear Solid with FPSE downloading a torrent with aDownloader while connected to wifi and playing Pandora. Granted i have a 3500mah battery which make this possible with out killing the battery.
Lol i just did the update today via OTA no way in hell am i going to touch the lg tool that bricked phone left and right. I new baseband offers a great deal of stability to signal and allows me to get nearly full bars anywhere i go. do the OTA update instead of the lg tool, much safer and a lot easier.

The phone as a whole is a lot quicker now than what it was with froyo imo even when rooted, which right now is the big downside as i can't seem to get this damn thing to root!
Also NVFLASH apparently roots the device now, so no need for superoneclick. I just put CM7 on it!
It's really up to you, but I'd say the ones with horror stories with the official update are in the minority. The entire process is straightforward, painless and lasts about 10mins. Plus the benefits from Gingerbread outweight the cons imho (like the crappier camera) Ofcourse, If you're completely satisfied with your Froyo installation then my best advice is to not try to fix what you precieve as not being broken.

You don't have to root it. Just go to the dev section and flash xboarder's pre-rooted stock since you have nv-flash already.

As for rooting I thought Superoneclick had GB break on it? If not then you need to do xboarders on top of stock GB to get root. Atleast that's as far as I read on the forums.

A search button? Never heard of that before...
To be honest, the method is in pretty much every ROM thread in the dev section.
On another note, my update went through perfectly fine. It did stop at 4% and then restart, then got hung up at 5% for a couple minutes, but I left it there and it got going again. If you want to give yourself the greatest chance of success, I would say reverting to stock 2.2 (I uses tgagunman's nandroid), reverting to stock recovery, and removing root before updating probably helps. It may not be necessary, but I haven't heard as many stories of it not working using that process.
I'm rocking stock ROM + debloated + Faux UV kernel with my own profiles.
Running like a champ and great battery life. The best thing? GPS connects instantly

Updates start from new england to the east coast, to the south, midwest, west, and finally north west. Be patient or just download and flash the stock gingerbread odin.
Stupid Windows and its want to hide extensions for known file types. I hate that! That's the first thing I turn off when I get into Windows.
Keeps you from doing something stupid like double-clicking on something like this... cutepuppy.jpg.exe. Because of course Windows hides the ".exe" part of the file name so you think it's called "cutepuppy.jpg" instead of the full file name "cutepuppy.jpg.exe". Yeah... instant p0wnage by virus. Can't tell you how many people have fallen for that.
renaming it to update. still did not work. Oh well I might wait for the OTA.

Not to mention that these are usually incremental updates. Meaning that you canNOT go directly from pre-ee4 directly to gingerbread. Even if the GB update was available in your area, you still would have had to be on EE4 before you could go to EP4D.
If you try the update.zip file with your old ED build, you'll most likely soft-brick your phone...just like I did with my friend's Fascinate when I forgot about one of the incremental update zip files.
just an example, my mom has an Droid Incredible, its been what 2 months now since GB started rolling out and she barely got the update maybe 2 weeks ago... I heard something about a layered release of the Charge GB, first to about 1,000 or so people as a soak test then 10,000 the next week and 100,000 a week after and so on

I don't think so, you have to be coming from EE4, which is where you would be if you were stock. I used Imnuts thread "fix any phone" but replaced the ED1/ED2 instruction for the EE4 file posted by pentative here.
Used it and the PIT to get stock EE4, then used the update.zip of EE4 to EP4D
Then rooted and all is well in secretville

Hi there
Do not worry. It is easy to come back to the stock Rom. I have done this a hundred of times already. You only need to read a little bit the process to install via ODIN, I recommend you use a windows based software in order to make your software work with your tablet. Do not forget to install Samsung kies with the driver to communicate with the device as well as the odin software with the stock Rom which you can find both programs in this link:

I hope you can find this information useful.

I use a Mac and have installed Windows via Bootcamp. Would that be something you feel comfortable doing to have access to the Windows platform when you need it? It's pretty easy to do (lots of tutorials out there including one from Apple) and because it is free ATM, I installed Windows 8 consumer preview - and it runs pretty well on my Mac.

My son, and his new tablet
I feel like a noob but am completely stumpped at this moment. Trying the kdz method to downgrade to Jul Baseband. Ive tried everything. Even whipped up a WinXP machine on VMWare, as the upgrade app crashes on Win7 without fail. Phone gets seen, kdz unpacks, starts process, at the point where the Pc starts disconnecting /connecting phone I get stuck at param 3053 everytime. But the phone doesn't brick. Everything stays as it was so I'm wondering if the problem may be an issue with my kdz download.
Someone who has successfully downgraded please post a downgrade reference.

I also have the KDZ files for V21E_00.KDZ, V21E_00.01.KDZ, and V21Y_00.KDZ here:

Oh man. Thank you so much for the hosted kdz!
Ill try again. Did you use XP, vista, or 7?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
I used Windows 7. The KDZ's are still uploading so give them some time. Good luck!

What is the difference between the 2 21E files?
I had the first one V21E_00 and I was told I needed the other one V21E_00_01 for the P999DW model.
Do you know anymore detail in regards to those 2 kdz?

I heard the same thing regarding the V21E_00_01 being T-Mobile G2x (or at least DW model) specific but don't know much more than that. That's the one I used and it worked perfectly. We're in the same boat... I'd be interested in finding out if there is a difference and what it could be too.

Well the only thing I am doing differently tonight is using the 00.01.kdz instead of just the 00.kdz
So if it goes thru with no flaws than I'd say
V21E_00=P999
V21E_00_01=P999DW
I'll know in about 10-15min. lol

Where you can select CDMA and theother one, DIAG
What do you select?
The guide says something completely different to use, but I assumed that was for a different LG model phone?

After 6 hours, 3 PCs and a VM later...
It still won't flash.
I always end up at iPARAM = 3035 and that's it. Just sits. FOREVER. Have read tons, AND TONS of info and tried different tactics to no avail.
ALL I WANT IS FOR BT TO WORK ON CM7!! GRRRR!!!

I followed the instructions to the letter and had no problems. At step 5 you choose 3gQCT not CDMA or anything else:

Also when running 'windows enabler.exe', wait for it to show 'ON' in the taskbar. It took a little while to register for me:
And, set all related applications as not blocked and to run as administrator in their preferences settings.
if you still need help, i was having the same problems as you. just to upgrade. all you need to do is go back to COMPLETE stock, that means unrooting too. it took me 3 days to figure that out and even ran windows xp on my computer to try and do it with thte same results. i honestly wish that we could use NVFlash (i have used it to flash the baseband to my gTablet). after that if it doesnt work the first time it should in about 3. sometimes its just something with the hacked server not running right.
