First Time ROM, have some questions - HTC Inspire 4G

Hello all,
Okay, so I've been to the Android Revolution 4g page here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964841
most of it is making sense, I just have a few questions. Here goes.
1) There's news that HTC should be releasing a new rom update to enable HSUPA on the inspire 4g. Is flashing an new rom going to cause issues there?
2) My computer (a laptop running windows 7 64 bit and norton anti-virus) seems to hate HTC Sync and my phone, I can browse the phone as a disk (along with SD card) but HTC sync just hates me is this going to be a problem?
3)And lastly, probably a silly question, but will flashing my rom cause me to lose all my phones onboard memory? Like non sd card apps, phonebook, etc?
I know this has probably been asked before, and I did try to find posts that were similar, but to no avail. Any help you have is greatly appreciated.

1. If your flashing AR 4G your going to have hsupa enabled anyway, so I am not sure what you are asking..
2. All you have to do is set it to disk drive, as long as you can place the rom on the sd card. Weather it is through the phone or an adapter you will be fine. There are other options if this doesn't work, but it should work for you.
3. To an extent yes. If you are flashing a ROM then you have root correct? Use titanium back up to back up your apps (none that have to do with htc). As long as your contacts are saved on your sim card or sd card they will remain intact. Your personal setting will not remain in tact you will have to set your phone up the way you want it. This is due to doing a full wipe, so you can properly flash the rom.

RAM in Froyo (2.2)

Does someone know if the 2.2 or the 2.1 need more ram, because on my magic with CM5, is the homescreen reloading sometimes.
Because of Low Memory. Will that be in the 2.2 the same or better?
I am running 2.1 right now and I don't have that problem. What rom are you using exactly? And before u install os 2.1 you need to flash your memory card with a swap partition in order for the os to run smoothly. I can walk you though the process if you want.

I have a similar issue with my milestone and launcher pro would this swap partition resolve this issue I'm running 2.1.instructions would be great if you think it would resolve this issue.
Thanks
The swap partition would solve the problem and I have no problem giving you instructions but I'm not in front of a computer right now. As soon as I get in front of a computer I will give you detailed instructions on how to do this. Please keep in mind that a full format is required so perform a backup in any which way you want until I can get back to you with instructions.
Probably I will have access to my computer on about 4 hours so check back then plz.

Before I forget, please write detailed info about your phone, model, current rom, what kind and size of memory card you have, bord info (is it 32a or 32b), and anything you can think of.

Thanks restrrcted my phone is the milestone running 2.1 update1 telus stock rom, non rooted, 16gb microsd class 4, let me know if you need anything else, cheers again!
well. i am sorry to say but i am not very used to your motorola. but i assume they should be the same as every other android phone, if so, here is what you need to do.
turn off your phone, remove sim card (it tends to delete things off of it, did it on mine), backup everything you want to keep that is found on your sd card, and then just do the simple action of turning your phone on while holding the 'home' button until some menu with txt shows up.
now, in that menu, you can chose several things, but what we are interested in is the 'partition sd card' menu. select that, and then chose the first option, and then chose the size of the swap partition, something like 256 is more than enough, then chose the ext2 size, something like 512 is more than enough, then the rest is fat32.
select apply or whatever option it gives you to finish the procedure, and then, in the same menu where you have the 4 choices, you have to select the third on 'sd:ext2 to ext3'. once that is complete, just reboot your phone from the main menu.
you can use the back arrow just like in the os it self.
i dont know if it will work, it will defenently delete all your data on the sd card, but i dont know if it will do what needs to be done.
also, keep in mind, that for the swap partition to work, you have to enable apk2sd under settings. somewhere in there. i dont know exactly where its found.
i am very sorry that i could not be of more help.
after doing all that though, if you reinstall all the software you have they should run faster since you will alow for more space to be used as ram.
good luck, and please let me know how it turns out. i am not very good with your phone. if it was the mytouch 3g i could teach you anything you wanted.
sorry i could not do more. please do ask me though, since i thing almost all androids are the same.
good luck.

look at this. maybe its time to root, that makes so many things so much easier. give it a thought, but personaly, if you can get everything you want done as is, DO NOT ROOT! it only causes complications.
although, there is some smart people making some very, very stable roms for this phones. mine is up and runing for 7 days and it is as quick (actualy quicker) than the stock, and 100% stable.
let me know how it turns out.
ciao
Rooting in itself does not cause problems, what you do on your rooted device is what can cause issues.
If you know nothing about Linux or what an administrator account is then you may want to steer clear of rooting your device, if you understand the dangers of allowing an application root access to your entire device then you should be ok.

[Q] STUCK with apps2sd

I have a US Cellular HTC Desire CDMA with ClockworkMod 2.5.0.9 and a properly formatted/partitioned ext4 SD Card, and I've been on every forum i could find including this one for about 5 hours, and maybe im just a total moron but i cannot get the Apps2SD figured out.
Heck, I can't even find it. They aren't transferring automatically, and I've read its supposed to be in Settings>Applications, but i can't find it, and can't get my apps to my SD Card.
I apologize that I'm an idiot, and thank you for your help in advance.
The option is indeed under Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications. Click the App you want to move to SD and the option should be there. Some Apps are not compatible with Apps2SD, however and cannot be moved.
I also remember hearing that there was a way to "trick" i guess you'd say, the phone into installing apps onto the SD and not know that it was even doing it.
Then you could have all your apps on the SD automatically and not have to transfer them one at a time
I don't really know about that trick other than hearing that it exists...apps2sd is really if I remember right what the .android_secure folder on your SD card is and its created everytime FroYo mounts the SD. It doesn't take up space unless you use it though.
Edit: there exists no such setting. Google left it up to the developer to allow his/her app to be moved to the SD card. That's the "official" answer. So until more devs add the code, it generally can't be done yet in most apps.

Issues with sdcard vs _EXTERNALSD

I know that LG chose to have this stupid method of utilizing there internal memory and naming it (sdcard) and then making our ACTUAL sdcards (_ExternalSD), but I'm getting super annoyed at the issues that are occurring due to this ridiculous method of partitioning.
Main Issues:
> Apps not looking at the correct place
> ROM manager only able to access ACTUAL sdcard but things are put in "sdcard" not _EXTERNALSD
> Files don't transfer between the two places (sdcard v _EXTERNALSD)
This is just a big cluster F#$*.
Does anyone know if there is a way to partition the "sdcard" internal phone memory and make the ACTUAL sdcard used the way it is on other phones?
I found a temporary solution. If you go into X app, X being whichever app uses storage or the ACTUAL sdcard, you can switch the storage to sdcard instead of phone.
Apps that have option:
> Browser (stock)
> Titanium Backup
> Camera App (stock)
I thought it was just me.. but i hate this implementation. This is my first phone having built in storage and I actually thought that was the way it was supposed to work.. and thought it was pretty lame. So when I switched to a CM7 rom.. i was totally thrown. LOL. but I agree. the whole "_External..." thing is lame..
DOPE phone otherwise tho.
Not a big deal for me

It really is highly annoying. Especially since I am coming from an HTC Inc.
I don't know what genius thought this was a good idea.
I agree and also think its cause some of the issues when loading rom's back and forth with CWM
As you can see from my sig, I've been almost exclusively HTC and this was a super weird thing for me to get used to. I'll flash CM7 once it's RC or stable, just because of this.

ditto.. i've always love htc hardware man. quality stuff. I came off of a G2 and bought this thinking it would be a big step up (you know.. dual cores n all).. it's an incremental update with some drawbacks. don't get me wrong.. i like the g2x.. but it has some flaws. meh. I'm here now... nothing I can do about it.. cuz i'm certainly NOT going to sell it to go back to the g2 just for netflix when the future of smartphones is clearly headed the g2x direction.
I also agree...it isn't a deal breaker, but it certainly is a strange approach.
I can only assume they wanted the internal storage to be the "main" and any external just to be extra space that the phone wasn't dependent on.
the GOOD thing about it is that is doesn't wipe when you format the phone.. the bad thing is... you can't get to it in CWM
I haven't fought with CWM, but how is this different than other Android phones?
My G1 had nothing, so no issue. But, the Vibrant did essentially the same thing - it had a different naming structure, but the effect was the same.

On my HTC Inc., they were completely separate. The external SD card's path was not through the internal. When you downloaded an app., all files for that app. went on the external SD card and not on the internal. It left the internal clean for music, photos and videos.
has anyone figured out an appropriate method of sorting this out,
i have a few apps which rely on content that is stored on my actual sd card about 10gb of content, but the internal memory takes the /sdcard ,, while the sd card is /sdcard/ext this is so aggravating, are there any customs build which target this?
I am having issues with this as well. When I boot into CWM to flash a kernel for example CWM only sees what is on the External SD not the internal so I have to transfer kernels that I have downloaded on the phone to my extern SD. The only problem is every time I try and copy and paste something from sdcard to External SD Astro tells me there was a ' move error' and I am unable to move anything....
anyone have this problem?
Make sure you are copying and not cutting (moving). Android doesn't like to move things between file systems.

[Q] Switching devices. Questions about SD, accounts, and SIM.

I am giving my unrooted Sensation to someone else on the same plan as I am on and getting an S2. Can I keep the stuff on my SD card and transfer it over? Or do the phones have a different file structures and I must reformat the card and start from scratch? Also, can another person put their SIM card in the Sensation if it is still under my name? (Without notifying T-Mobile). Finally, I would like to be able to share some of the apps from my Play account onto what will be my friend's device, without having the account shared across email, calendar, and contacts. Is this possible?
Thank you so much. It has been a pleasure being in this forum with you all.

Apps lst is saved on the cloud, so just delete your google account from sensation and log on in galaxy and with SD card, copy all your music videos pictures and other stuff that you need, without system files like Android folder etc, then format sdcaard and put everything back on it, then put it in galaxy, it would make new files It won`t take long time, and you will be sure that your sdcard has no unneeded files That`s what I`m always doing when I swith ROMs or phones, and had no problem at all about T-Mobile I don`t know, maybe someone else would answer you with this
As far as the sim switching goes, t-mobile, being a gsm network, could care less if you put a new sim card in the phone. Tell your friend to pop in his sim and all will be right with the world.
Thank you so much, both of you! I hope that there are people like you both on the Galaxy T-989 forum.

That's completely correct as far as the technical network goes. However, your friend or you might want to call T-Mobile customer care and tell them explicitly about the new devices on the accounts for non-technical reasons. There are occasional customer care things where the path is smoother if the rep doesn't have to say, "I don't see that device on your account". For example, if you need to do a warranty swap. Those things are not impossible without this, it's just that the path is smoother. For 99% of life, it doesn't matter at all.

[Q] A confirmation is all... :)

Hi,
I guess I might sound like a retard - but to the best of my understanding, I believe I have mostly understood what I need to do to install a larger ROM on my HD2 Leo
I have the radio, Hardspl 2.08 and MAGLDR already installed on my HTC and a previously CWM ROM I believe to be am ICS type I wish to upgrade from.
I would love to load a larger "sense" type ROM, but I realise it takes up more memory. So, I have ordered a 32Gb SD card with the intention of using it after "partioning" it to load my large ROM. I also want to a fair bit of memory set aside to install some large type apps, so I guess this is where the SD card comes into play as well.
I've read the guides and tried to ascertain what the best method would be for me - but there seems to be a few ways of going about it, and I easily get confused. Do I root the phone? - do a "Nand" or SD-based ROM install?
If I could get a simple rough guide as to which would be the simplest way to achieve the above - I would be greatly appreciative.
