No 4G LTE Love for Eastern Virginia?? - General Questions and Answers

It seems Verizon aims to cover just about any large-medium-sized cities in the US....
Lets look at this map: http://network4g.verizonwireless.com/pdf/VZW_4G_LTE_Coverage_Map.pdf
- Bristol?... 1st of all, that has a population of around 30k... That'sa not even really Virginia! Seriously?...
According to that map, Washington is the only part of Virginia Verizon covers now. There's no other stars on the map for Virginia.. wtf? Verizon doesn't even PLAN to cover Virginia outside of Washington, DC for the rest of the year??!?! Washington DC has a population of around 700k. Hampton Roads: Nearly 2 million! Not only that, but Hampton Roads is home to the world's largest naval air base! And Verizon just decided "Meh, screw them!"??!?
I'm sorry if I'm ranting but Verizon's choice of cities to cover... lots of them just simply don't even make sense!
Can someone enlighten me on this?

No love for Richmond either...
Same boat. I'm pretty incredulous that there is not a single Virginia city on any Verizon LTE list..
Pretty sad

Lolz maybe we could do a change.org-like petition thing (the reason I mentioned Memphis was cause I was raised there, not many people even have smartphones over there!)

It probably also depends on the amount of people in a given area that actually have VZW. Just because it might have 2 million people, doesn't mean that Verizon is widely used there.

i live near exit 247 on Rte 64 east newport news and I have 4g Lte started today

You just made me **** brix 0.0
Did you do a speedtest? :3 And how far did it reach? Btw, not that its my business, but what were you doing to notice 4G while driving? 0.0 Haha lolwardriving

lol I wasn't driving. I was using Google services for location.
Download speeds between 6-15.9 mbps. Upload speeds from 2-6.7mbps
From what I have seen it doesn't go too far away from this location. I got for a sec while trying to get on Fort Eustis back gate. Lost 4G while traveling in Williamsburg. Perfect 4G signal while at home.

Now I want a Thunderbolt ish

Just an Update I still have 4G service at my location. Download speed top out at 25mbps.

I can second mdbrotha. There is LTE service between The Lee Hall and Ft. Eustis exits on 64. I notice it on my phone right before the big storm. I was only getting LTE at the Wendy's on Warwick Blvd.

I went into a Verizon store yesterday and told a rep that I was get LTE at this one location and he told me that LTE was turned on at the tower at the Lee Hall exit. The rep said LTE was going to be turned on Sept. 30 and that it would roll down from Toano to Va Beach. I hope this brings a smile to a lot of people waiting for some Hampton Roads info. I will put up some screen shot as soon as I reach 8 post.

Yea I just bought a Bionic and the rep said that most all of Hampton Rds would get in in October

So I went into a Verizon store yesterday and heard one of the reps say the Newport News area will get 4G in about 2 weeks or so.
After he was done with the lady I asked him a few questions. I mentioned that I had 4g in my area. He knew the area that I lived at, mention that I am around on of the trial sites (which I figured) and said I should have perfect 4g connectivity (which I do)

If Hampton Roads area gets LTE by October I might switch from Tmobile to Verizon. Verizon is the only cell company expanding their 4G footprint.

I work on base to and mine came on after lunch. I live in Hampton, in the Willow Oaks/Fox Hill area and I have 4G in my house right now.

Hampton Roads LTE
I live in Norfolk near the base, and can confirm 4G there this morning. None in Downtown Newport News by the shipyard yet though.

I have had 4G on all day from Fox Hill area all the way to Ft. Eustis. I still have 4G on base right now. Maybe Verizon turned it on.

Anymore updates? I live 3 minutes from Norfolk International Airport, and don't have a 4G phone (yet). To be more specific, I live near Diamond Springs road. Anyone experience 4G in these areas yet? I know it gets turned on on the 20th, but I'm sure its already mostly on now, and I'm itching to know if its working in my area yet lol

AT&T LTE, working in Los Angeles!

You heard it here first!!!
I restarted my phone, and what do you know...! LTE came alive in San Diego, NY, Phoenix, and now Los Angeles! WTG AT&T!
First test,
10-11mbps down, 1.5-2.5mbps up. 1-2 bars, Gardena, California. 75-96 ping.
I could only get speedtest app to connect to servers in Kansas. So I wifi tethered my device to my computer, and I'm getting better pings, but roughly same performance testing to the nearest physical servers.
Yesterday, I was getting HSPA+ at 1mbps down at the very same location.
sweet..AT&T will throttle you in no time..like the rest of us LTE users.
I plan on using only 2GB a month at most for business use, web surfing, and maybe an occasional youtube. I don't think I'll get throttled.
LTE is live in San Pedro. Fast but like Chicago not impressive really. I'll give att the benefit of the doubt until they can somehow get more spectrum (or utilize new qualcomm spectrum).
LTE is live in Redondo Beach. 30down/9up so far.

Whoa, I'm glad I just saw this thread. I've been on Wifi since I'm at home and work all day.
Getting LTE here in Palms (Culver City), too. But speeds are only about 8mbps down (vs. 2-3mbps on HSPA+). I think each area in LA is different. In a diff part of LA, i had about 6mbps on HSPA+. Will have to try it out more later.
Although download speeds sound low, latency seems non-existent. Did a quick search on google maps and loaded espn's full desktop site, and everything immediately loaded.

Yeah, that's what I LOVE about LTE. HSPA+ might at times report <100ms ping, but it sure doesn't feel like it. LTE reports ping around 75, but it feels as fast as my home internet with 20ms ping.
Guys, unless AT&T can snag more spectrum, don't expect to see anything above 15 down, because they probably have 10MHz of spectrum on the west coast, which is BARELY enough for LTE. That qualcomm spectrum should help out though.....

Same here! I hit 19Mbps down here in west LA for the first time today (usually around 8). Not sure if it's b/c it's the first time I tested w/ 3 bars, or AT&T is ratcheting up the speed.

warning if you plan on leaving tmobile

Going to sprint I's the worst move i ever made ,but TMobile forced me to. TMobile 2g is atleast three times faster than sprint 3g speeds. I sold my sensation and miss it dearly as well as the fast internet i took for granted. Just wanted to share my experience with you all if you had thoughts of going to sprint. Its unlimited plan is the only one for a reason. I been throttled by TMobile and its faster than sprint 3g . Here's some speed test i did i called customer service factory reset phone .I did this test several times before i factory reset it still the same slowness. Htc evo 4g lte is the phone i have.

How far is your local Sprint store? If you can test out the phones there and see how fast the phones are there and then test the speed on your phone while in the store and compare if you get the same connection. If not, you can tell at that point that it's the phone and not the service. However, if the phone connects at the same speeds, then its the service.
his area is probably not covered

I agree sprint does suck, and I made the same mistake a while back before buying my sensation. I had the Epic 4g on sprint when it first came out, their 4g and 3g was wicked fast compared to T-Mobile(at least to me in my location.) I quickly started getting tired of their service and over billing shenanigans. Long story I came back crawling to T-Mobile! and I suggest you do too. Now a word of advise. Look up the user qbking77 on these forums, he has tons of videos that might help you out(he's a sprint guy also.) Good guy btw.
Aaron from PhoneDog actually has the same issues and he's in Charlotte. He's also said that he's spoken with people in other cities all across the nation and many suffer the same issue.

FYI if you are going to take this advice ake sure to turn the WiFi off on the in store device. The working display models are usually using WiFi for data. It is yet another one of those sort of underhanded sales tactics. I mean most people just see the device pulling up websitse and videos on youtube fast and say"look how fast the internet is" with out ever noticing that the WiFi is on. Especially first time smartphone costumers.
Afaik, sprint use a wimax technology and tmobile use hspa... I read somewhere that hspa is better than wimax... This is the heirarchy looks like from what i read: first is lte, second is hspa, and last is wimax... I might be wrong though... I can try to google it...
Edit: or it might just be the coverage... Ever wonder why sprint dont advertise base on their coverage ... They simply rely on their unlimited campaign ads...

Those suck. Here are my sprint speeds on my evo 3d. These are a mix of 4g WiMAX and 3g. When lte gets rolled out here it will even out. I'm in Austin,tx and san Antonio is seeing 17-20 MPs download on lte

I live in Rockford illinois no wimax or lte just 3g i checked my friend epic 4g my girlfriend epic touch , another friend evo shift and we all get slow speeds. Maybe it's my area but when i had TMobile i made fun of all my friend sprint network speeds so i guess this is karma. The sprint store is in the strip mall behind my house and there's a tower by my house i get full bars but its just slow. Factory resetted my phone . Played with all settings from cdma only to cdma hdr to cdma / lte same speeds i wouldn't complain but i got friends that got prepaid phones from cricket that run faster on 3g im talking about low end Android phones smh . I just wanna watch one minute YouTube videos without having to wait 10 minutes. Download games like angry birds in less than 15 minutes im not always around wifi. Don't leave TMobile if i can work something out with them i will return and get another sensation. I love the evo 4g lte alot but what's the point of having a Corvette with no engine i can go no where.

I'd love to know, too. I've seen a bunch of spots on Sensorly that people have reported w/ LTE, but I've not been able to connect to any yet.
Ugh, lucky.
We have LTE in Waco, but its soooo slow. I get 200-400kbps in most of the city. Houston is a bit faster, averaging at like 600kbps.
I'm in North Park, but commute to work every day. The area with coverage is in Grantville, the trolley station that is west of SDSU. Every day it is consistent. I've actually narrowed it down to the exact base station if anyone wishes to know...

Yeah, you were receiving the remnants of the signal from the Grantville area down the hill a bit...but there is a 4G tower in La Mesa that is on and off at the moment too...they are beta testing it right now (according to a Sprint RF Engineer).
Here, check out this speed! Posted today at 9:50 PM...
So far speeds seem very consistent...
Of course, thats 4 bars as compared to one on my first post...wonder what full signal strength would run...

Well, 3G and phone service is choppy all over the city right now as they rollout Sprint Vision (LTE).
If you experience any interruption in service, call Sprint and when you get an agent ask to talk to a supervisor. If you are insistent they will provide a credit to your account for each day that your service is down or messed up. This tactic is especially useful when they have a tower undergoing a service outage due to equipment repair. Pay attention, San Diego has many ZIP codes; they like to try and say this only applies to the ZIP where your billing address is located. Not true. I tell them San Diego is my home, and that I pay for Sprint service and utilize my phone for business purposes here...If you are travelling through the city and notice messed up calls or data, take notice of the ZIP you are in and call them and get your discount, it,s usually good for the amount of days the tower is out. I regularly squeeze $15 to $20 off my bill every month!

Got a 4G signal downtown around 7th and B. Signal was strong but speedtests were slow at about 2 Mbps up and down. I was at a mtg around Scripps Poway Parkway just off of I-15 and got an LTE signal with superfast speeds at 25.73 Mbps down and 5.17 up.
I'm still switching to VZW though. I'm done with Sprint and their terrible business decisions.

I've had sub 2Mb before, but that was on my GNex. I'm in NE Ohio. On my M8 I've seen speeds up in the 30-40's, and speeds down to ~5-6 Mb. I haven't really paid attention to see if it's related to what area I'm in, or the time of day, or what. But it can fluctuate a lot, obviously.
Past several days I've had around .2-.6 down at home. Elsewhere its 45-55 down though. I'm in south Dayton, OH.
Just an educated thought here.. but if they enabled ~700mhz AWS bands at all in the area you live in... it could be interference caused by local cable tv signals. If the cable signals in your area are in any way shape or form leaking.. it will cause problems. These frequencies now overlap.

Wow. Looks like I'll feel like I'm back with Sprint when I go to new York this August for vacation. Some places here in California I pull over 100 down. But usually never less than 20 in worse areas. They must be doing major network work. Last few days at work near Long Beach, CA I'm lucky to get 2-3 bars 3G, sometimes 1 bar 4G. I use to get 2-4 bars 4G all over work since day one this phone came out. Last 5 days have been craps service! Checked online and many confirm this so not just me. People say they call customer service to only get the run around so who the hell knows what's really going on?
I swear, leaving AT&T for Verizon so I could get this device was the biggest mistake. Never had AT&T issues with network and Verizon acts like their the best in the country! Best at wasting money on T.V. ads instead of investing it in their network I guess. Damn false hope switching to Verizon.

Just got .74 mbps down and .21 mbps up, that's on 3g.
Rebooted, got .21 mbps down and .25 mbps up.
When I rebooted it did show LTE for a second or two before dropping back to 3g.
I'm not complaining, I get NO SIGNAL at all in my house with T-Mobile!
No wonder I'm always on WiFi! <G>
Got it to show LTE! 2.02 down, 1.01 up.
Pathetic.

Speedtest

Man, look at some of these speeds I get when getting a good signal on mobile data.

Damn, that has got to suck being that slow!! I have Internet in my house that usually always gets over 120Mbps mainly because my server needs really high speeds to keep up with the demand..
I would of left sprint along time Ago if i didn't have internet at home.

Where it is actually at T-Mobile is very fast as well. But similar to sprint you could go a few blocks away and be roaming. Or at least wishing you were.
So I guess the conclusion is: Sprint surprises some, disappoints most.
I ****ing hate when my phone shows me good LTE service yet it STILL doesn't load anything..... I mean the service is WORLDS better than it was when I signed up in 2006 but it really pisses me off sometimes.

You know we are all on sprint because the unlimited data plans are the cheapest in town.
I travel fulltime and I can say its nice when you are in NYC and can pull 80mb down. Not so nice when you are driving across South Dakota or New Mexico and all you have is roaming.
Overall the best coverage I've seen across the contiguous USA is on the GSM network (ATT) and the best data bandwidth has been LTE over CDMA with Verizon having the most consistent coverage.
The technology is changing faster than anyone can keep up with it though. If your bandwidth sucks now just wait a year. It might not be the fastest but it should get better.

Luckily I am on Long Island so I get pretty decent coverage most places but sometimes it is spotty. Like someone else said, standing over here it is great but go across the street and it is non-existent. Sprint really shot itself in the foot when it went Wimax instead of LTE. They backed the wrong horse and they are only just starting to get back on track. For what I pay, and the coverage and speeds I usually get around here, I have lived with it. However, those times when it doesn't work even on Long Island, REALLY pisses me off. When I'm up on a trip in Vermont somewhere forget it. Everyone else has data coverage (at least functional) and I got nothing but that is the price I pay. I usually just turn off the cell radio as it drains the **** out of my battery.
Man sprint is stepping up finally.
