[Kernel]T959VUVKB5 + Bootanimation Support - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Here is a kernel that will allow Bootanimation support.
Steps
Must be rooted
Delete the Samsungboot .qmg files from /system/media
Push a custom bootanimation.zip to /system/media
Delete the PowerOn sound files from /system/etc
Flash Kernel with ODIN
Put phone into Download Mode
DO NOT CHECK REPARTITION. DO NOT USE A PIT
Put the downloaded .tar in the PDA SLOT
Flash away.

good stuff Krylon!

Already got it worked into the new rom, thanks Krylon!

I pushed bootanimation.zip but all I get is a blank screen

Ok noob question. What does this do? TIA

If you have to ask, I'm not exactly sure you should try flashing it. But what it does is enables you to use custom boot screens.

If you look at the directions the Krylon posted. they tell you where to delete the old power on sounds. I would imagine that you could copy a new sound file in that directory.

If things are screwed up you can always just re-flash with Odin

Its strange, I can see that the old bootsound was in wav format. However, the shutdown is in another location and it is .ogg format.
I believe that maybe the bootanimation.zip needs to contain the audio for it or at least need to somehow be linked.
Krylon know I bet?

Glad to be able to see someone who enjoys messing with electronics as much as we do!!!! Keep up the great work and as always looking forward to a GRRRREAT ROM

Will this update only the kernel? Or is it going to wipe all my phone's data (apps, settings, etc)?

Just update that kernel ;0)

Well
good work krylon
questions
/system/media NO Samsungboot.qmg
+ where can i find bootanimation.zip ?

Got a question, can we use this in conjunction with the new KC1 rom? can I just flash using odin and allow boot animations again?

Love it, I have never replaced a bootscreen. But I think I will have to try for this one.
Okay, I'm stupid.
How do I flash this?
Is bootanimation.zip in this thread the original one?
Do i just flash it (install from sd card) in cwm recovery?

bootnimation.zip
adb remount
adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local

flash through ClockWorkMod
that?
Oh I thought that that was one step. Now i see it is two for separate things.
thanks. sorry.
You can also use root explorer. You don't even need a computer to do it. Just download the zip to your SD card, and copy it with a root explorer. Go into data>local as R/W paste, and then reboot.

SO in root explorer you just go to /data/local... and just place the bootanimation.zip there.. Then unzip the android_audio.zip, grab the mp3 file and place it in the same place?

you are correct and than reboot and you will have the bootanimation with sound.

I cant believe more members havent thanked you
Working beautifully on my Inspire, thanks alot
can you use this to get sound on all the bootanimations.zip?
yes you can just place everything in the right folder.
Assuming we're running stock we just put it into System/Customize/Resource
Is this correct?
Also If we don't want sound I assume just don't put the file in?
EDIT: I got it successfully. "System/Customize/Resource" is the correct location if you're on Stock based rom's. It's pretty hilarious.
I got no sound. Should I to rename the android_audio.mp3 file? What about the permissions?
this is F***ing AWESOME!
I am getting no sound even with the mp3 in the local folder. Used root explorer, moved anime to local and cut mp3 over to local and both in the same folder and no sound. Rebooted twice just to make sure and no go. Hmmmm

Have you renamed the new anim 'bootanimation' and removed the old one?
Regards Dousan...
You may put it in either data/local or system/media.
However, the boot animation must be called bootanimation.zip, AND IT IS CASE SENSITIVE!

Samsung boot animations

I've not seen this listed in the continuum forums so I thought I'd post the link. I'm pretty tired of seeing Verizon every time I reboot my phone. The shutdown animations are easy enough to change but I've had little luck finding or figuring out the .qmg file thing. I was poking around and I found this thread in the Epic forums. I am currently running the Charge boot animation and it works great. The one hitch, after you install through recovery you'll need to go in an explorer, I use root explorer, to system/media and rename the your bootsamsung.qmg to something like boot.sam and rename the bootani.qmg file to bootsamsung.qmg. Hope you anjoy. Credit goes to nubecoder.

messed up somewhere
I did the whole rename thing but when i did it they came together(the names) then i didnt know which was which. Anyway some how i got boot.ani boot.sam & bootsamsung on there. dont know how to get back, any help would be much appreciated. Now all i get is the droid charge sound but no animation
The one you want to use has to have the .qmg file extension. So, it would be bootsamsung.qmg
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
Sorry please forgive my ignorance. What do I do with that file exactly? You said use it? How?
You use CWM recovery to flash it. Once flashed you need to rename the files as outlined above.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
I did that, and the first reboot had started with the continuum boot then showed the droid eye, then came on. After i changed the names but somehow got boot.sam, bootani.qmg, bootsamsung.qmg all in the media folder. Now I can hear the droid charge boot animation just cant see it. Was thinking should i just reflash the DC07 rom. then try this again or is there an easier way? Thanks
No need to reflash the ROM. I'd reflash the shutdowns and repeat the process. I've not got a clue what you might have done.

Yeah. Es defaults to /sd card. In the app go menu settings. Under home directory, make it just say "/" then scroll down to root and mount system, and make sure voth are checked. Then you are good.

Wow, there it is. Thanks.
Next Question. I renamed the bootsamsung.qmg to boot.sam, which got rid of the boot animation, but I don't have the bootani.qmg. I reflashed the boot image I downloaded, and looked again but it's still not there. Any suggestions?
EDIT: I reflashed the file, and the bootani.qmg showed up. Kind of sweet. Wish I could use some of the custom ones that are out there, but I guess I should be happy I was able to change it for now, eh?

First,
download the boot animation from here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43901231/bootanimation.zip
and the bootup sound from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43901231/PowerOn.wav and place them on your sd card.
Next, use root explorer and go to SYSTEM/media and rename the"bootanimation.zip" that is in there to "bootanimation.zip.bak" then copy the stock animation from your sd card to the system/media directory.
For the sound file, copy the "poweron.wav" from your sdcard to SYSTEM/etc using root explorer. Reboot and enjoy. =)

I can rename it to "bootanimation.bak"
Then I can paste your file, which shows up as "bootanimation.zip"
Will this work? I am afraid to reboot and try

May have been a bad download. Try downloading the one from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247131
And trying again.
Well it looks like the bootanimation in that thread only contains a black frame. So unless you can find another source or someone who knows more than me replies you're stuck with the humble animation (Unless you want to just keep the black screen). Sorry.
To go back to the humble animation just delete the new bootanimation.zip from system/media and remove the .bak from the original humble animation.

Thanks for replying. My current bootanimation.zip is in system/media & so is att_pu.ogg. So the OGG doesn't replace the current one in system/media?
So if I wanted to go back I'd reflash my current bootanimation.zip? Replacing the modified bootanimation.ogg with the original att_pu.ogg?
Or do I need both bootanimation.ogg and the original att_pu.ogg?

Ok so I can rename the original to att_bootanimation.zip just to keep it handy & add bootanimation.zip to system/media to flash from?
Leave att_pu.ogg where it is now? Put bootanimation.ogg to the root of my SD Card not in system/media?
Make a Nandroid. Using BMM flash bootanimation.zip? Reboot & I'm done?
But I need the ATT bootanimation.zip not the one available currently linked?
Thanks.

Thanks. This should help me also from that link.
To install (for those who are not familiar with the process):
1. copy bootanimation_moto_pulse.zip file to SD card
2. using Root Explorer (or the like) copy from SD card and paste to /system/media (make sure you mount r/w)
3. delete the current bootanimation.zip (make sure to save a copy on your SD card first, if you haven't already)
4. rename bootanimation_moto_pulse.zip to bootanimation.zip
5. mount r/o, exit Root Explorer, reboot, and watch the moto logo throb

Rename it to "droidhd.ogg" without the quotes, of course. Then make sure it is located at /system/media with the bootanimation.zip. Set the permissions to both to rw-r--r-- make sure the owner reads:
Owner 0-root
Group 0-root
Then reboot. It's really quiet, in my opinion. I'm considering boosting the volume of the .ogg if anyone would be interested in that, let me know.
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.
