thats where i have it and its still booting with the stock one for some reason

Have you renamed the new anim 'bootanimation' and removed the old one?
Regards Dousan...

You may put it in either data/local or system/media.
However, the boot animation must be called bootanimation.zip, AND IT IS CASE SENSITIVE!

It wont work in /data/local unless you have created a symbolic link in /system/media

Boot up sounds dont work, they have to be activated some way, maybe in one of the .xml files

good stuff Krylon!
Already got it worked into the new rom, thanks Krylon!
I pushed bootanimation.zip but all I get is a blank screen
Ok noob question. What does this do? TIA

If you have to ask, I'm not exactly sure you should try flashing it. But what it does is enables you to use custom boot screens.

If you look at the directions the Krylon posted. they tell you where to delete the old power on sounds. I would imagine that you could copy a new sound file in that directory.

Its strange, I can see that the old bootsound was in wav format. However, the shutdown is in another location and it is .ogg format.
I believe that maybe the bootanimation.zip needs to contain the audio for it or at least need to somehow be linked.
Krylon know I bet?

Glad to be able to see someone who enjoys messing with electronics as much as we do!!!! Keep up the great work and as always looking forward to a GRRRREAT ROM
Will this update only the kernel? Or is it going to wipe all my phone's data (apps, settings, etc)?
Just update that kernel ;0)
Well
good work krylon
questions
/system/media NO Samsungboot.qmg
+ where can i find bootanimation.zip ?
Got a question, can we use this in conjunction with the new KC1 rom? can I just flash using odin and allow boot animations again?

Steps To Changing Your BootSplash Screen.

I have a custom boot animation and boot up sound now i am very interested in changing the splash screen. I don't want my phone to boot up and say LG
Is there a tool or a command prompt input that will allow us to change it to whatever we like. I know i'm not the only one who would like this.
I am also looking for information on how to do this on the g2x. I've tried other android guides and command prompts but nothing has worked for me so far
Copy it to your phones sd card amd use root explorer or something similar to name the file bootanimation.zip and copy it to /system/media ... Make sure to back up the one that's already there in case you need it.

[How To] Boot Animations

Figured while we are waiting for some custom roms, we could still get a little custom action going on. I got tired of sprints boot animation and started playing w root explorer. Need root access, and a file manager that has permission to write to system folders.
You may want to back up the original sprint_bootanimation.zip to another location before copying any other files, just in case you want to return to stock. I ended up losing mine in a wipe, once I got it back I figured it would be a good idea to have one posted for anyone who needed it, see below.
Below is a link to the Razr stock bootanimation.zip (most 960x540 animations will work, as well as several other resolutions, play around and see what you find and like), rename it sprint_bootanimation.zip and copy it to /system/media. After it is moved change the permissions to rw-r--r-- , should be able to do this by long pressing the file. The other is an OGG file (do not rename), also copy this to /system/media folder. Voila, you now have the stock Razr boot animation whenever you boot your phone, sound and all.
If anyone would like to post some more stock or custom animations below, feel free.

You put droidhd.ogg into system/media with the zip (not in the zip)? It has to be in the system/media folder with that exact spelling.

I hear it now but its very low. Its doesnt matter though cuz i luv the boot way better then sprints.

That's odd, I assume you granted root explorer su permission. Maybe go into system settings, apps and clear data in root explorer? If that doesn't get it try es file manager, open menu, settings; close to the bottom of the list is root settings, check all the boxes. It will ask for su permission & you should be able to do it then.

Just a thought. Did you hit the Rw/Ro toggle in the upper right hand corner when you were in /system? People sometimes for get about that.
@OP, Here is a Pro-Tip that I have been using for a long time on a few different phones if you like to swap bootanimations a bunch.
If you drop your "custom" BA in /data/local and set permissions, it will boot up when the phone does. By doing it this way, you can test out as many BAs as you want and all the while your original in /system/media is left clean and unadulterated. I have collected a bunch over the years and have them on my sdcard. Another trick to put them in folders to easily copy over into /data/local at will. So it would be sdcard/MYBootAniations/Clockhell/bootanimation.zip or sdcard/MYBootAniations/RollerCoaster/bootanimation.zip.
Sometimes, I will drop one in my wife's /data/local and then the next time she boots up BAM!!! She is pretty saavy at these things, so it is shortly after bootup when I get a text or call.
Nice, thanks for that, I will give it a try.

I believe so, screen resolution is what we are looking at, bionic is 960x540, as is the Q.

Just replaced the boot animation, work great, sounds great too Thanks for sharing.
It would be great to replace the word "droid" which robot says to "photon". Maybe I'll give a try.

You should check out a script that kevinrocksman posted from TeamDart...it's an install script that uses cmd.exe on a PC to flash the sprint_bootanimation.zip file and either an .ogg file or MP3 of your choosing through your custom recovery. It's a one-click deal. Very handy!

Boot Animation Won't Run

Hi all,
I have recently rooted my Galaxy SIII and wanted to put a custom boot animation on my phone. I followed all of the instructions, and moved the old bootanimation to my sd card just in case. However, now it just plays the audio for the stock boot animation and wont run the one I've installed. Any ideas as to what I can do?
Does it play the new animation though? The sound file is separate from the animation file.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No, it's just a black screen
I would recheck the names used for the files. I changed my boot animation to the stock samsung one. It was 3 separate files but worked the first time
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
The file is saved as bootanimation.zip I tried putting it in /system/media and /data/local via rootexplorer. I also tried using adb and installing from absolute system
Did you extract the zip? There should be 2 files for the startup.
In /system/media
bootsamsung.qmg
bootsamsungloop.qmg
As for the power down
/system/media/video/shutdown
shutdown.qmg

The audio is stored somewhere else. I never changed that so I don't know where it's located but that has no bearing on the video animation. You can leave the audio like it is if you want.

That file type does not work on the S3. It has to have an .ogg extension. The Bootanimation.zip is typically used by Cyanogenmod and a few other manufacturers. Open the zip file and see if it contains the correct file names as stock.

I never had any luck w /data/local, works fine in/system/media tho. Rename, set permissions, done.
:edit:
Could try KP's method using adb if all else fails.

FWIW, I've noticed that simply removing/renaming the sprint_bootanimation.zip (the yellow sprint animation) from /system/media and leaving the bootanimation.zip (the red moto logo) sped up my boot time a bit. It appears that the phone will run bootanimation.zip followed by sprint_bootanimation.zip. I haven't tried removing bootnamiation.zip because I don't like a plain black screen during boot, even if it is a second or two faster. Plus I haven't found a boot animation I like yet to replace the stock one.
