[Q] Wifi stops working while in use - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all - So I've had my Nexus S for around 10 days, and I seem to be having a persistent issue with the wifi.
I am on stock 2.3.3
When my screen is off, and I turn it back on to use it (say for the xda app) my Wifi will show as connected and be either white or green (doesn't matter) but the wifi will not work.. I have to wait 5-15 seconds for the wifi to be "active" for some reason..
The wifi will also "die"while I'm browsing on the internet (say while I'm reading a thread in the XDA app and I want to load a new thread, but happens in all other apps as well) and I'll need to wait for that 5-15 seconds for it to kick in again..
I have Wifi set to Never Sleep, so I'm not sure what is going on with it.. Maybe the wifi is damaged in the phone.. Thinking about exchanging it or trying a custom rom and see what happens.
All my other devices (PC's, Vibrant, Nook, iPhone) work instantly and perfectly with my router except this one. It just seems something is causing the WiFi to go to sleep way too fast...

I understand your frustrations although mine doesn't cut out during use it does take ages to start working. Even my LG GT540 Which is about the cheapest Android available starts Wifi instantly ((

G2x wifi problem

My wifi connection is not very stable. Keeps on disconnecting.
I heard this is a known problem for theb g2x. Are any of u experiencing this issue? And or know how to fix this?
Is tmobile gonna do an update fix for this?

I've experienced wifi issues myself. Wifi was working flawlessly the first week i had the phone but now it seems as though it does not want to connect to any network -__- it just says 'error'
Not sure if i had something to do with it acting up, maybe i downloaded an app that caused it to act up.. idk
No definite word if the upcoming gb update will fix this issue but i sure hope it will!
sometimes simply rebooting your router can fix this. of all the wifi threads i've seen, i never saw anyone mention this. but like i said, it will sometimes fix it.
After leaving my phone idle for 15+ minutes, I'll lose wifi. Simple fix is to disable/enable wifi. LG knows of this problem and will release a fix on the next update. http://www.lgforum.com/forum/boards/general/lg/topics/g2x-wifi-problems
Now others are having a different type of wifi issue where it won't connect at all, I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue.
I'm having the exact same issue. Wifi will be connected, then after a period of time the connection gets disabled. It's quite annoying, as I often do not notice it for a while, after I have already gobbled up a bunch of 4G bandwidth.
I fixed this problem with G2xFixWi-Fi from the market.
Just 4 clicks and it is done.
two separate wifi problems with the g2x
it's good that your wifi problem was fixed with the G2xFixWi-Fi app. but that only fixes the dns problem.
there is another wifi problem where if the phone is in idle for a while and you wake it up, you see from the indicators at top there is no wifi icon and that it is trying to connect 4g but doesn't succeed. the 4g icon flashes on briefly and disappears. it keeps on doing this every second until i manually turn off wifi. then it connects to 4g. from what i can deduce, if i don't turn off wifi before putting it in idle, it does this as well after the phone is in idle for a while. i'm not sure how long after the screen switches off that this looping process happens, but give it 2 hours and i feel that the back of the phone is really warm. i'm thinking that it's warm because it is constantly in this loop. this may also be the source of the massive battery drain that some are seeing.
if i manually turn off wifi before putting it in idle, this doesn't happen. so that's my solution for the time being. i heard about using tasker to automote toggling wifi on/off as the screen is on/off. and it seemed to work at first. but after an overnight test, i found out that the phone response time is sluggish and unpredictable, to the point where i had to have perfect timing just to unlock the phone from idle. rebooting the phone didn't resolve the sluggish response problem, but uninstalling tasker did the trick. so now, it's back to manually turning off wifi before putting it in idle.
another solution proposed is to set wifi to never sleep in the settings. the last time i tried it, it didn't work for me. but i'll try it again to see if it'll work this time.
setting wifi to never sleep did not help
nope. i changed my wifi settings to never sleep and the wifi disconnection problem still happens.
When my phone was stock I had problems with Wi-Fi when it was simultaneously trying to run 2G or 4G. Since then I have switched to various ROMs and Wi-Fi is rock solid. I do use Juice Defender which turns it on and off when screen is off and I'm not running a short list of programs like Pandora. It also reliably switches on when I arrive home.
My G2X won't connect to every WiFi network, and there are a few it cannot even find. I was in a cafe the other day and my friend's laptop and Nokia connected to its WiFi network and my G2X could not even find it... (( So, the problem is, some networks it recognizes but does not connect to (it sticks to "obtaining internet IP..." and then disconnects) and some it cannot even recognize. But to most networks it connects no problem (my home included)... What could be the problem? Can anyone help me?

If you have not messed with the ROM and are having this problem - try TMo tech support first, then ask for a replacement if not fixed.
I have had excellent WiFi performance with stock ROM and EB Froyo's and GB (with and without kernels) - WiFi always worked OK. Could be bad unit - it should work!
My wifi has worked flawlessly, but I think it may depend on the router. I recently bought a wifi repeater to use on the other side of my house and when I connect to that, the G2x will disconnect from wifi after about 15 minutes of idle time, like previous posts have said. I switch back to my regular router and it never disconnects.
I have also notice the problem to.

I am experiencing this same issue. My phone is rooted with no roms. This just started happening within the last week. Does anyone know of a fix for this yet besides possibly factory resetting?

This sounds like normal behavior honestly. What is your wifi sleep policy set to? By default the wifi radio turns off when the screen is turned off and then turns back on when the screen turns on.
G2X CM7
Thanks for responding. I have it set to "when screen turns off." The weird thing is I never noticed it do the little switcheroo before. Also, I have Juice Plotter just for fun and it used to show wifi for most of the night when I'm sleeping and the phone is charging. And now it shows APN during that time. I guess it was messing up before and now it's doing what it's supposed to.
Can you enlighten me on a myth, I heard that the wifi consumes less power than the APN or 4G. Is this true or false?
Thanks again

With a LTE or Wimax phone, I think so. With a phone using hspa+, I don't think so.
Did you try.
Did you set it like I do, WI-FI never sleep. Because where I live
T-MOBIL had no cell service. Well, Very spotty coverage.
Also check how many people in you're neighborhood are on your same channel. And change yours.
Look in mark there's a free APP that's a WI-FI analyzer.
And change to one

My wifi is acting weird. It does a loop whenever i have a WPA/WPA2 settings on my home wifi but works when i have it disabled. :S It was alright with stock froyo and stock GB i uploaded from LG. then i flashed Xboarders OTA 1.2.2 GB and this happens.
Can any1 give an insight how to fix this ? =(
im having the same problem, i bought the g2x the day it came out (when it had froyo before gingerbread came out) and never had a problem leaving my wifi on 24/7 it wasnt until the update for gingerbread came out that this problem started happening, it really sucks for me since im using my g2x as an AT&T phone for now all i get is 2g speeds
---------- Post added at 04:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:35 AM ----------
also something i tried and worked was turn wifi off, turn off your phone and turn it back on then go to menu>settings> wireless & network>wi-fi settings>check connect to wifi and check connect to wifi that worked for me (holding the phone in landscape mode (horizontally) ) i add that in because one time i was turing the wifi on in that order it didnt work i dropped my phone and picked it back up in landscape mode and wifi was connected. im not sure if anything i said helped anyone at all but hope i didnt waste anyones time

[Q] What bugs have you noticed?

So far the only thing that is bothering me is the wallpaper. It keeps switching back to the default after I change it. Also, text messages have been failing to send and I have never seen that before. I have a micro cell so its not a network connection issue. Other than that its all aces so far.
I've had it a little over 24 hours now. The only problem I've had is with Tango. It seems to be a problem with various Samsung phones and the update that Tango just did. The video from the front camera is turned 90 degrees. It also zooms way in, so they may only see your lips. My sound is a bit low, too. It's on the forum over there and the engineers say they are aware of the problem and are working on it.
I've come across a (possible) WiFi issue with two separate devices in the past week. Lets say I join my home WiFi network and I decide to head to work. Once I get to work, I join that network. Now, when I leave work and go back home, the Infuse won't automatically pick up the home network again until I manually turn off the WiFi and turn it back on. Only then will it finally switch over and join the network. It seems to do this regardless of where I'm going and where I've been.
While I'm not sure this is an issue with the phone or my service here in town, but I seem to be either timing out on data connections a lot or having extremely slow speeds over the network. This wasn't ever a problem with my Inspire, iPhone, or any other device have carried.

I am noticing same said WIFI Issue.
I also have a wifi issue. I have 3 other phones in my household. My wifi is with ATT U-Verse. All the other phones connect to the wifi perfectly fine and holds the connection (iphone, droid incredible, droid x)
However, when I try to connect to my Wifi through my Infuse, it'll connect for about 2 minutes, and then cut off. The wifi signal will still show that it's active with full bars but nothing that requires data will work (ie browser, app store, email, youtube etc).
Since I am unable to connect to wifi, I have to put it back to H+. This isnt good because I only have the 2gb plan and i download a bunch of apps and watch a bunch of movies on it all the time.
Is anyone else having this problem?
I cant get the front camera to work on fring.....

the auto brightness turns back on all the time. the notification bar is also a brightness adjustment if auto brightness is off, just hold the bar till the pulldown dissapears and move your finger to the right. it will get brighter. i used this a lot on the captivate, having auto self turn on is quite annoying.

app drawer
I am having an issue that the TouchWiz app drawer will open and it will be completely black. About a second later a little spinning progress icon will appear and about 4 seconds or so after that it will finally populate, sometimes out of order.
I have been a fan of LauncherPro and used it on my N1 prior, so I installed it on the Infuse and have not had any problems. Its a good thing I hate the TouchWiz launcher anyway, otherwise this would annoy me.
I noticed that the power button isn't real responsive when I got to unlock the phone.
The stock browser for was a nightmare!!!!scrolling isnt smooth, and it wont resize the text good.any one else had that problem? Now i use dolphin hd and launcher pro and it works great!!!! Oh yeah, i couldnt get the front cam to work on yahoo.
First over night charge last night and when I took it off the charger this morning it was at 84%. It didnt completely charge to 100%. I had to finish charging it in the car on the way to work. If this happens again, unfortunately I'd have to return this device. Battery seems to drain fast as well for me. This device sort of reminds me of the droid x.
I also have had the wifi not automatically connecting happen sometimes. It has also done that for my Bluetooth radio as well. I have to turn off my bluetooth and turn back nor, or have to connect it manually.

that is also a bug in 2.3.3 on the i9000. it may only happen a couple times. not a big deal especially because the battery life seems pretty good

yeah it seems the device mapping in the kernel is a little funky. fring uses the wrong camera as well
Not sure if it's a bug or not but I tried GPS on the Infuse at AT&T store today. The Infuse got a lock for 10-15 secs then lost the lock and not able to get a lock again. The Atrix and the Inspire next to it didn't have this problem.

samsung still has funky stuff going on with gps. though this phone has vastly upgraded hardware you can make improvements still.
there is an app that you access through a dialer code called lbs test mode. im not sure what the code is so i use launcher pro activities to launch it. that has gps settings.
there is also a config file called secgps.conf. i think this is a secondary config for it to fall back on. i set this file up to match lbs tset mode and get better results. i also turn off "use wireless networks" in settings>location and security
it seems verizon had a more seemless implimentation of these things on the fascinate. though it's raw gps output is not so good.
it seems like if the quality of one location mode isnt good enough on a captivate or the infuse it switches to another location service and starts from scratch. this can cause more issues than poor performance. the more you limit the options for the system on gps the better it works on these phones. i can even get a captivate to track flawlessly despite its weeknesses in accuracy.
My lockscreen keep loosing the pattern even though I set it, this could be related to widgetlocker though i doubt it because when I change from pattern to pin it now works. This thread is the reason why I left samsung before, I am hoping that this phone proves to be different....to be honest short of the lock screen thing and the struggle I have with battery life this seems to have 1 upped the captivate. OOhhh also I changed the screen density I can't stand that 240 density they create trying to be like apple icons etc wayy too big.

HELP - Xoom FE won't stay connected to wifi

So the wife and I have each had a Xoom FE since late October, last night my Xoom began having issues staying connected to wifi. I thought it might be an issue with our alarm system, that afternoon a wireless alarm monitor was added so we could do away with our home phone. The wife brought her Xoom into the bedroom and hers works fine, so I moved into the pc room to test it and with direct line of sight and full signal I still can't stay connected. I turned on the mobile hotspot on my phone and connected to it on my Xoom and surfed the web just fine.
I've always had issues with both of them initially connecting upon waking from sleep, but simply turning wifi off/on fixes it and it stays connected until the next time it sleeps for any amount of time more than 30 minutes. This was different, it would connect, start to load a page, lag lag lag, load a little more, lag lag lag, load a little more, maybe load entirely or give an error about connectivity. Again, wifes sitting right next to me in the same room, same network works fine.
I don't believe it's an issue with my Xoom, I haven't rooted or installed any new updates or programs. It was working fine one night and then the next night it's having connectivity issues. My wifes works fine on the same network with the same settings. My Xoom will connect to my cell phones mobile hotspot. I will try my Xoom at another location soon to see how it likes other wireless networks but as it will connect to my phones I don't think it will be a problem elsewhere.
Cliff notes: My Xoom doesn't want to play with my wireless router anymore but my wifes still works.
And last night it was back to working fine. I shut it off for the night after having the issues and re-started it last night around 8pm and it worked like it always has, so I don't know what was causing the issues but it seems to have fixed itself.
I had a similar issue with my rooted Xoom on the latest Tiamat GB release. I tries reflashing and few times with the same issues. I've now upgraded to the ICS beta roms and not only is the WiFi working, but its better then ever with much better reception. I wish I knew what the original issue was though.
mine was doing that the other night, but only when i had the charger plugged in.
worked fine every time i unplugged it...
All I did was go to the android market and found a actual wifi widget and always had it turned on. It works flawlessly. Hope that works if nothing else.

Sometimes these things happen, if it's working fine now I wouldn't think anything of it. These are just like computers, they need to be restarted every now and then. I wish my Xoom FE would work. I can't get my wifi to work for crap no matter what I do.

[Q] "other" WiFi issue??

Ok so it seems many people have some complaints about the WiFi on the One X but from what I have found, no one has the same problem as me.
When using WiFi after around an hour or so (seems to vary) of not being used the WiFi seems to loose connection, but it still says its connected and the only way you can tell it really isn't working is by trying to use the net in some way.
I turned on the "best WiFi performance" option and that seemed to stop the connection loss but really eats up the battery. So that is not a full time option.
I wonder if i should be taking this phone back and exchanging it (once they leave customs)
I also have an issue where when I put the phone in the car dock (unfortunately not the nice one that connects with the back contacts like I thought I had ordered but one that uses USB) when I take it out my lock screen no longer shows the weather when you hit the power button, I have to go back into the personalize settings and change it to another lock screen and then change it back.
Some detail: when connection is lost the phone is sitting in the same spot which is only about 3 feet away from the router. My previous TC Aria running CM7 would also lose connection occasionally but it was no where near as often as this. I thought that maybe it was my router seeing that its an old Linksys WRT54G Ver2 but no other devices that use WiFi have this issue. I updated to the leaked 1.82?? version but I still have all the same problems.
Anyone else have this issue? Think I should exchange?

[Q] Phone restarts itself on bad wifi connection?

This past weekend I went home to my parents place, and they have a truly godawful internet connection. When you add than on top of the fact that it's a brick house, you get a spotty wifi connection to a slow line combined with a small wifi antenna in a phone usually means that wifi on my phone is terrible when I'm there.
Unfortunately I forgot my laptop this weekend, and wanted to watch some netflix before going to bed. Because I didn't want to destroy my monthly data limit (2gb) I decided to try the wifi. It was working ok at first, long buffers, low quality, but watchable. But then my phone restarted itself.
When it turned back on, I load up the same episode and it does it again. At first I think it's a netflix issue and leave it alone. But the next day while browsing (chrome), it does the same thing. I then realize that all three times, it got hung up while loading. In the case of netflix, loading the episode, and in the case of the browser, whatever page it was. I then turned off the wifi and tried netflix over the 4g connection and it worked perfectly. Same thing with browsing.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, or know about an alternate explanation that could be restarting the phone? If so, do you have a solution? It restarted itself probably a total of 6 times while the wifi was turned on, and not once after I switched it off. At home, with a strong wifi connection, it also never restarts itself.
Thanks for any help.
TL: DR Phone restarts itself while trying to load stuff on a slow wifi connection. Does not restart on 4G or good wifi.
Thanks for the TLDR haha
What ROM are you running? I personally have never had that issue.

At the moment I am running stock, unrooted. I just got this phone last week after having a Samsung captivate for two years. While I had that thing ROM'd to the gills, but rooting and installing ROMs seems a bit more complicated on this phone and I am taking my time making sure I know what I'm doing first.
