[Q] Rooting the Moto Droid 2. - Droid 2 Global General

Wanting to root my droid 2 but wanting to know the advantages and dis advantages. and then the big question. how do i do it??? Please any advise and help would be greatly accepted

Thread moved in Droid 2 Global General.

Easiest way to root is downloading an app called "z4root" search around the forms and you'll find it. Benefits are everything from overclocking, uninstalling bloatware, custom roms, etc etc etc.

What Gilamesh said plus you can use Wireless Tethering. As for overclocking, I've overclocked mine to 1.4GHz before but battery life was bad. I'm at comfortable 1.25GHz for now.

[Q] Smartphone newb in need of gen advice

A few months ago I bought a HTC EVO. It is my first smart phone. I am not what I would describe as a heavy user.... My web/phone mix is about 40/60.
I was referred to this site from guys in my car club. They recommend some sort of rooting? and kernel? for battery life....
My batt life sucks and is unreliable when I'm on the move. Even a short drive with virtually no use will kill my battery. I haven't tried the recalibration. I just actually read about that process but frankly I don't understand the directions 100%.
What do I NEED to do to this thing in order to keep it performing top tier and extend my battery life?
Should I remove my advanced task killer? What about antivirus?
I am super computer ignorant. Cars are my thing, computers not so much. What the hell is a root? What is a kernel? What is removing sense? ROM meaning Read Only Memory? Is this something I need to physically add to my device? Will I run into support issues after all this stuff?
I need some solid, straight forward advice in lamen words about what I need to properly maintain the software on this thing.
Thanks a bunch!!!
I realize this may not be the best section for my question.....
Mods/Admin can you move this thread to the Android section that would be the most appropriate?

Ok, well i dont have an evo i have a mt3g but i will tell you a few things. There are a lot of people that say task killers do more harm than good. Android already has a way of killing tasks on its own. Antivirus never caused an issue for me. If you have no interest on computers or knowing your phone that personally i would not suggest you root. Rooting gives you super user permissions. Basically an all access pass. Of course they have issues as nothing is perfect. You can see that from running into issues stock. A kernel if i understand correctly is what controls the communication between the software and the hardware. Some have better battery life than others. You have to be rooted to flash them though. Setcpu can also control your processor speed for better battery control. Again you need root to use it. Sense is what your phone runs on stock and some people like it others dont. Rom- Yes read only memory. There are different ones you can flash to totally change your phone. They run different on everything as well as battery life, options, look, feel ect. Again you need root to flash custom Roms.
Hope this helps. Also you can go to the evo section here and read all the info you want on rooting, roms, flashing, battery issues, ect.
This should have been in evo Q&A section. Not complaining or anything strictly fyi so you know next time and where to look for your info.

Xoom Overclock Question.......

Just a curious question..cause im thinking about getting one of these soon. I like em.
But..these ship with Android 3.0 or 3.2 already on them. NOW...example..the G Tablet...people ROOT those because of the bad stock ROM it came with. And the Non Android market that it shipped with. Then lead to many other things to be added to the GTab like the SetCPU for overclocking.
My question would be....since the Xoom already has Android 3.2 and all...no need to really ROOT it for me. BUT..is there a way to overclock it with any app...WITHOUT having to ROOT the Xoom??? Most of those overclock apps you need to be ROOTED. Just wondering if there is a such app to overclock the Xoom without ROOT.
Thanks for any reply.

No, you need to root and install a kernel or rom that supports overclocking. But the Xoom, while perfectly fine on stock, absolutely shines when rooted and running custom rom/kernel.

I knew that was coming. So Xoom you would say is still VERY good straight out the box??? Speed wise. loading...startup and stuff like that.
What could be added with the ROOT that it doesnt already have??? Besides a overclocking app like SetCPU. How else could it benefit from a ROOT that it cant now?

Ok, for me, I hate not have root control over the device, and when unrooted/unmodded, it feels less snappy. Plus rooting adds functionality (sdcard r/w and usb host mode in addition to overclocked cpu/gpu) so I can't see leaving it stock/inrooted.

THAT i understand. Like example..the G tablet. That HAD to be ROOTED. It was a very powerful Tablet. Tegra 2 Dual Core..it had the power. But the software on it sucked. No Official Android market or Google stuff on it. So to me...that HAD to be ROOTED to bring it up with all the other big Tablets.
But the Xoom...it had the Official Market...it has Tegra 2 Dual Core also. The things that the GTab didnt have...Xoom has out the box. Thats why i wanted to know besides overclocking...what else would it need. The things they ROOTED the GTab for....the Xoom has already. Cept the overclock. So for me...as long as its not too slow (Which it cant be that slow)....i should be good with it. Just want it overclocked maybe a lil if i felt it was needed. Know what i mean?

I used to think the same thing until I installed morray 2.2.2 all this time on a stock rom and I was just getting used to how much it sucked. I would suggest giving morray a try and I can say you won't be disappointed.

[Q] Is it worth rooting?

Hi,
this may be a stupid question but I'm owner of a xoom for 1 week now (got it pretty cheap on amazon cyber monday) and am actually quite fond of it. To my question:
I'm actually quite surprised by the user experience on 3.2, it's very responsive and fast so I'm asking myself if rooting is even necessary? Also looking in advance to the official release of ICS, which is supposed to come pretty quick for the xoom.
Is it worth it? If yes, which ROM would you recommend?
Thanks!
overclocking is worth it. most of us run rock solid @1.5
not to mention all the other things you can do...
I agree, rooting and using custom roms and kernels adds lots of functions that you otherwise wouldn't have, like being able to write to the micro sdcard and using usb host mode.
I love the setup in my signature and highly recommend it.
There is the expected ICS update, but I think it's still months away. Our developers are working on ports of ICS as we speak, so chances are that we might have it in a custom rom before the Xoom gets the OTA update.
Then that's settled. Thank's for the help guys!

hi okantomi,
i use rooted xoom but i dont do overclock due to battery drainage. Is it true that more you overclock the device more your battery drains? I am confused. I want to overclock and again want to save battery. what can i do? plz help.

yup OC = more battery usage.
if you OC with setcpu you can use profiles and set the clockspped to batt level,temp...
Profiles work really well to save battery under certain scenarios, also you can undervolt a bit to save battery...you will have to experiment a bit with that though, too much undervolting won't support the clock speed you have it set at...(do you follow?)...there have been a couple of good threads on this topic.

Any real need to root?

I sent my Galaxy S Vibrant through the dishwasher, which didn't turn out particularly well, and the insurance company sent me this G2X as a replacement.
Pleasantly surprised that wifi tethering works out of the box. That was the big point of rooting the Samsung and upgrading first to Bionic (which was awesome) and then to CM7 (which was a big wad of bugs).
Any particular advantage to rooting? LG seems to be much better than Samsung as keeping up with the joneses.
rooting
I recently got my G2x and after following the instructions for installing nvflash and CM recovery I began flashing many different ROMs. I had never done it before and instantly became an addict. My girlfriend who got hers on the same day kept hers stock. Her camera seems to be brighter, mine is faster with a lot less bloat. I did overclock my CPU which so far seems to work well with this phone.

It is worth rooting if for no other reason than to get all the bloat off. Try tsugi rom. It is super stable and lightning fast.
Just the ordinary stuff:
-adfree
-UV kernels
-set CPU
-battery calibration
Those alone are worth the root.
bloat
After having it overnight I can see the advantage of rooting to clean some of the autostart junk out of /system. A couple of times I've had it essentially lock up and the list of processes shown by ATK (when I can get to run) is insane.
Rooting isn't really required or hardly used. I DO use root explorer to make system changes and rom Manager if you crack flash.
But everyday stuff... Maybe titanium backup but I never used it either. Best to restore apps manually.
Most phones require root to install clockwork mod recovery. With Tegra devices you only need to nvflash which doesn't require root. Once you have a custom recovery you can flash roms and custom stuff without root.
So root isn't really important on the G2x unless you want to use a root required app.

I have my phone rooted and tight now only need root for two purposes: 1. I use App Quarantine to freeze unwanted system apps, and 2. I use SetCPU to underclock while the screen's off to save on battery use.
Subtle but important for my phone at least. It all depends on what you use your phone for. Rooting the G2x is pretty easy so it's simple enough to have it if you need it.
Got mine rooted and on CM7. Yes it depends on what you use it for and prefer. I like the custom options that CM7 provide like gestures and specific sound settings etc. In general you do get more freedom to do things and personalize, at the risk of messing it up if you are not careful.

Why are you using Advanced Task Killer?
Rooting can bring many nice things.
Such as better battery life, better phone performance, opening your phone up for countless customization options.
And a great benefit: no more waiting months and months for new firmware from T-Mobile, get the latest and greatest right away.
And that's just what iI know, I'm sure.there's many other ways.

Rooted my Tab, Now what!

Hello all, i rooted my tab today. Installed Superuser, Set CPU and Titanium backup. I froze a few of the pre loaded Samsung apps that came with the Tab. What other things can i do to speed up performance now that i am rooted? Any suggestions?? Thanks!
(Also if anyone else is currently using Set CPU on their Tab7 +, what settings work well for you? )

Which model? (There are at least 4 different ones.) Are you willing to give up battery life for that speed? What do you want to use your tablet for?

I have the Wi-Fi_GT-P6210. I guess my main issue with Set CPU is what are the limits i can go to without locking up the device. I have Set Cpu on my EVO 4g so i am familiar with it. I guess i was just seeing what advantages rooting gives me. I have my EVO rooted so i know the benefits on my phone, but what about the TAB. What apps can i remove without effecting performance. Thanks
If you want to overclock or undervolt, you'll need a custom kernel (see my sig.) At that point, you can OC to 1.4GHz. (I didn't include support for 1.6GHz has the processor in my own 7+ wouldn't stay stable at that speed, so I can't test it properly - it was also extremely easy for me to only add 1.4.) For voltages, you are also kind of going to have to experiment. I'm stable with 1300/1225/1125/1025/950/900 on my tab plus, but I can go much lower on my SGSII (which has the same processor.) You can search on the SGH-i9100 and SGH-i777 subforums for what other people have done with voltages.
As for which apps can be safely frozen, there's a post or two on that from a couple months back... I'd suggest searching for the full list. Nearly anything that looks like bloat really is.
I'd never suggest actually removing stuff - much better to just freeze it... then if you figure out that you really needed it, it's trivial to defrost it.
Good luck
Gary
