AT&T claims that they are able to detect if someone is using their device as a hotspot and that they are going to start forcing those users to pay for the tethering plan, the article is here:

Does anyone know if there is really a way for AT&T to detect if a phone is a hotspot (aside from data usage) or if they are bluffing. If we are using a non AT&T ROM, can they still detect?
Theres a thread in general about this

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me that is on AT&T if they force you to pay for tethering services or you can use it without them charging the extra few.
So say I have a android phone which supports it (Nexus 1) and I have their internet plan (no tether option just 2gb plan) and connect to the built in wifi tether service of the phone when I connect will ATT let it work or will error out? Thank you in advance
No one knows? Can't seem to find online at all.

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a hack to tether android phones for free. Or maybe hacked androids mobile wifi app to be free
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
This has been around sense the beginning of Android.
Thanks, i hope it works for my inspire
When I saw the header for this I was hoping it would help me tether my next book via wifi to my cell phone ( a HTC TOUCH PRO 2) . Not this though, does anybody know what hack I can use to get my nextbook to recognize the wifi router from my cell phone?
I would use it if i could figure out how to root my phone

What am I missing?
I have a new Inspire / ATT (I am new to Android; previous was Tilt2 with WM6.5, heavily modified). Wifi hot spot came built in and I have used it to connect my notebook to the internet.
What I thought this was about was an Android equivalent to WMWIFI, which allowed one to do the hot spot thing but ATT could not detect the phone was tethered, I looked for that because I was grandfathered with ATT and would be able to have unlimited data for $30 a month. But I could not find this function for Android, so had to go with a tethered plan for $45 (all data inclusive) and limited to 4GB a month. If I could do the equivalent of tether without a tethered account, then I could stream video, etc, unlimited.
But this app looks to me to just be an implementation of the stock tethering. Or am I misunderstanding it?

Your misunderstood. This app is undetectable by carriers, in my case sprint, and allows tethering without paying per month for it. All you need is a data package and rooted.

I'm within my 30 days. I wonder if I can drop the extra $15 for tethering, and also go back to my grandfathered unlimited data. Thanks for the explanation.
Now I need to figure out the rooting process. My Tilt2 was heavily modified (using ROMs and phones by others), but the process was the same for all. Now it appears that every phone seems to have a different root process and I can't find it for the Inspire.
Another Question Though
Would this also allow me to download video, streaming it to the phone, without ATT knowing it, or is it just for hot spotting?

Streaming it to the phone? What do you mean? The WiFi tether does exactly what it says: WiFi tethering. So yea you can download videos and netflix with your computer.
I don't have an inspire but I believe if your connected via your WiFi router you can stream videos from your computer to your phone. I've never tried though.

The nexus s comes preloaded with tethering, this isnt limited by your carrier as the nexus s has no restrictions on this per agreement with tmobile or as an unlocked edition thru best buy, wife has a nexus s and no tethering package added on and it works fine, open up your setting and select wireless & networks then scroll down to tethering and portable hotspots
My laptop has had this issue before i got an android phone. I had wm phone. Im still trying to find out why.

IDK about a hack for recognition but I do use EasyTetherPro.apk on unrooted device and I have more than tripped my tether usage allotment ....Still going. It's got a setup for tablets too, though I've never tested anything besides USB tethering and the app is legit there ..so.....Maybe give that a try...Its 10$ ($9.99) but to bypass my 8gb limit =priceless
HTC Touch Pro 2 is Windows Mobile... and that post is 6 years old.
Like is their a program out to unlock it or do I have to to those websites and give them the imei

Rooting will give you an unlocked sim, if thats an option for you.
And on "Other", you only got T-Mobile USA, which will only give you EDGE speeds.
My phone is already rooted.. I'm running the sense 3.0 ROM... So does that mean my phone is unlocked... I plan on selling to some one who is on tmobile

My Inspire is unlocked, achieved it from rooting. i am currently using H2O Wireless SIM and 50$ a month unlimited plan, the service is great! although its not unlimited data, 100mb of data a month, but i usually only use WIFI for all my data so thats ok with me, but there is another option, its called Simple Mobile, Unlimited EVERYTHING and up to 4g speeds in some areas for 60$ a month, its a GSM chip so it can be use in an unlocked HTC Inspire... im thinking of switching to simple mobile from H2O wirelss for the unlimited data.... although my area doesnot support 4g speeds yet :*( they have a coverage map on the website that shows where their 4g speeds are covered
Well i tryed to post the links to simple mobile and H2O Wireless, but i am new to these fourms and it says i cannot post links from outside sources yet :/ but just google H2O Wireless, or Simple Mobile, Thanks!
As long as you put in you apn settibgs correctly on your inspire and you should be good!!you need that companys apn settingss for their internet and mms service!
Again, I am having a problem with an app, lol.
Anyway, I am a subscriber to mobile hotspot. When I attempted to open the app it told me I was not a subscriber, I have been one since february. I don't know if it has anything to do with being on a rooted phone (Which I doubt since I was on the fassy rooted using this) Or if it is the kernel (PBJ) I am on Eclipse ee4.
Thanks again
I had a similar problem with an app called "Wifi Hotspot and USB Tether" which is basically an unlocked version of Verizon's Hotspot app (buy the way, it works flawlessly.....something to think about).
Anyway, I also run PBJ on my Charge. I downloaded an app called "Masqed Crusader" and it completely wrecked my ability to Wifi Tether. So I re-flashed the 0731 version of PBJ (thanks imnutts) and I was able to Wifi Tether again.
Hope this helps.

I took a look at my plan, it turns out that when vzw put me on the charge that I lost mobile hotspot for what ever reason. If I reactivated it would I lose unlimited data?
It is my understanding that if you previously had a smartphone WITH an unlimited data plan AND you never stopped having a smartphone, then you are grandfathered into an unlimited data plan. But please call a VZW store and ask a rep before you take me at my word.
So you dont have the actual Hotspot app itself?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
LTE hotspot is $30 whereas 3G hotspot is $20, so they won't automatically add it. It is, however, a separate feature on your plan from the data package (unlike ATT that lumps them in together)- so you should be ok to go ahead and add it on.
Read that someone got the 15 dollar charge added for mobile ap, but has anyone been able to usb tether without issues? I'm on a custom Rom, but was looking at the built in tether support

May be useless for you, but tethering (through USB and WiFi) works just fine here in Russia. No additional charges, of course.
Well I'm glad to know it works on the sk, but I guess I was wondering more about how T-Mobile likes it. If anyone knows that, maybe they can let me know

Hey there Shadowscott, i have been using the tethering and mobile access point feature of my sidekick for a long while and i can say that T-Mobile does not seem to have any issues with it. Keep in mind that i am using it on an unlimited data plan and it may act differently on a different plan.
I have always used Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether without any problems. It even works on the 200 MB data plan! :good:
Just use any root tether app, and you will be fine, unless you do it like my buddy that's on my account and use up 30gb. So far we just got a warning but i think he started using the stock app by accident.
I have a work-around for the native tethering app. But it requires apktools, smali editing.
Using KD1, and in the middle of a two-year stay in Greece, I'm able to connect with stock tether app and Greece's Cosmote phone service (even tethering to a Windows CE device).
Also, for anybody traveling with an unlocked Sidekick 4G, your US phone can get 3G in Europe. That's because the German TMobile uses both Band I and IV within its 2100 channel. TMobile's HTC Touch Pro2 also gets 3G, along with other higher-end TMobile phones.

Hey there!
I use USB tethering on my sidekick, and the problem is that they WANT you to pay the 15 dollars to pay for tethering. They can't just charge you for the service, that's illegal. At any rate, the way around this (sometimes t-mobile, for example, won't allow you to USB tether, and will cut off your tethering) is to use Google Chrome. You can download an add-on in their market-- search "User agent" and I currently use the "Ultimate User Agent Switcher, URL Sniffer", which is a red circle, with two arrows wrapping around each other. You then set your setting to Android 2.3, and now your laptop registers as your phone to your phone company. You will be 'mobile browsing' technically, you just have to make sure to click 'desktop' options when available on websites.
Note: This method is legal, as I was given it from a T-mobile representative, so please don't think this is some underhanded method for 'stealing'.
