[Q] Why do I need to format /cache? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
Sometimes, on my rooted Nexus S, I cannot install apps from the market.
I mean: the download starts and, once finished, the installation does not start.
The only thing I can do is to clear /cache folder using root explorer.
Any idea about how to solve?
TIA

Apps not installing

I'm rooted and running stock Rom. I tried to reinstall crazy snow board (as an example) and get the message install failed can not find SD card. Any one have this problem? I'm at work and don't have access to the search feature. I was able to install another app. (imb movie) I have clearest cache and fixed permissions in Rom mgr since I update cwm. Have also pulled the battery.

Is your phone mounted as a disk drive?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Yes it's not mounted as a disk drive, I'm home now and had time to search. Found this from user Modred on another site. " I had the same problem, here's what I found out: there's a work-around and there's a fix.
1) The work-around: Unmount your SD card, install the app, mount your SD card, move the app to the SD card. And yeah, that will get annoying pretty quickly.
2) The fix:
Now, this worked for me and I read it on the android market support forum, but there's no guarantee.
- connect your phone to your PC as a mass storage device (you cannot access the file we're looking for via a file manager within the phone, the OS keeps it hidden)
- backup important data
- find the folder named ".android_secure"
- there, delete the file called "smdl2tmp1.asec"
- disconnect your phone
If all went well, you should now be able to install apps again. Nothing bad happened to my phone by deleting this temp file, but please backup before you do this, just in case.
Hope this helped. "
I tried both and they worked.
I wanted to confirm...
...this does fix the problem and causes no damage to the phone. I tried it and it worked like a charm.
Thanks for the tip!

[Q] how to resolve "Installation Error - Insufficient Storage Available"

I just got my wife a new Samsung Infuse. Successfully rooted with the SuperOneClickv1.9.1. I was then able to restore some of her old apps with Titanium Backup.
My problem now is that when she goes to install a few additional apps she gets the following error:
Installation Error - Insufficient Storage Available
However the SD Card and Phone Storage pages show plenty of space!!
Available Phone Storage = 1.46GB
I realized the problem after she had installed some simple stuff like Handcent and MyFitnessPal and they just disappeared. So I went to install ES File Explorer and RomManager to do some troubleshooting and that installed successfully. But another weird thing was that those two didn't show up in the app draw. So I went back to the Market thinking I would try and install again and the market showed it was already installed. So I was able to open the ES File explorer and rommanager programs from the market with the "open" button.
does anyone recognize something like this? I can't explain it?! I'm using the stock rom.
i read something about installing more than 50 apps?
i read that i should try to wipe the dalvik cache? but i can't figure out how to get into cwm recovery to do that?!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091465
I found both of these and I think of my self capable of doing this stuff, but i can't figure out the exact steps to get all the way to wipe the Dalvik Cache.
i'm open to all suggestions..
Please help

This phone auto-copies your apps to your microSD card (external_sd). Try going to Settings -> Applications ->Manage Applications -> On SD Card -> Click an application -> Move to Phone.
Rinse, Lather, Repeat for each application.
Thats not happening with mine. All my apps are installing to the internal sd card. Nothing seems to want to go to my 32gb external sd card except pics and videos. Game data, navionics maps and all that load onto the internal sd
I am still getting this...sometimes I get it sometimes I don't...but there are a few apps that never install because of this...any ideas?

I had this problem and I just kept trying to install. Did a reboot and tried again and it installed. Not sure of a real fix though.

Try this if you have the new market with the book and movie categories. Uninstall the market update and you'll be able to download your apps using the older market. There is a bug with the new market.
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Downloaded>Market>Uninstall Updates
I had this problem a while back. After hours (i mean hours) of googling, I found that the Market saves the app into the /cache partition. Samsung unfortunately made this partition only 30MB in size. Now, if you rooted and installed a custom rom that has the voodoo lagfix (ext4 partitions), 5 MB will be used as a journal for the filesystem. This means that if you try to download an app thats greater than 25 MB, the market will say that you have no space available! (cue expletives!)
The easiest way to fix this is to temporarily bind the cache partition to a location on your sdcard. For example, lets say you have a folder on your sdcard called syscache.
you would bind /cache to this directory with (run this in terminal or adb. run su first)
Code:
#umount /cache
#mount -o bind /sdcard/syscache /cache
Unfortunately i can't seem to find out how to unbind the directory after i am done. Found this solution on the internet. Use at your own risk :]

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Duos GT-S7562

Hello!
Is there actually a way to mode Apps to SD Card without ROOT the phone? I'm new on Android system.
Thank's for the support!
Simon
Link2SD does not require root, and has a GUI, too.
Edit: ^That's not true!
Hello!
Thank you for the answer. On the description of the app it's written:
"Link2SD is an application that makes it easy for Android 1.6+ users with root privileges on their phone to move applications to the SD card."
Doesn't it mean I need a ROOTed phone? I know, could test it before to ask, but haven't the phone with me.
Thank's
Simon
Um, actually, yes. I'm not sure what I was thinking yesterday. All those *2sd methods are scripts, which are intended to execute upon startup, and tell the system to mount another partition. So, yes, you definitely need root.

Sorry for interrupting but did you mean that all those *2sd function will work after rooting? Because they don't work on my phone now without root.
The *2sd scripts are intended to run during the startup process, like in Windows you can set some programs to run automatically every time you start the computer. in this case, these scripts are only a couple lines, and they typically tell the system to mount a certain partition on the SD card as a folder. For example, if you move everything in /data/data to a partition on the SD card (i.e., /sd-ext/data), then mount the /sd-ext partition as /data/data, then every time the device tries to read or write to /data/data, it will actually be accessing /sd-ext/data. You need root authority to mount and unmount partitions.

I need clear answer and solution...

[Q] Rooting/Imaging Assistance Samsung T679

I have a Samsung Exhibit 2 4G model T679 phone. I am new to this so if I can some assistance on how to update the Android on this phone. I believe I have already rooted it by going into the recovery and running Root-Stock.zip before install ClockWorkMod. Now after downloading cwm.6025.t679v1.zip to the external_sd card and copying the what I believe to be sdcard root. I get "cannot open for write: Permission denied".
I originally was trying to install TWRP but I get the same problem. What am I doing wrong? I installed Terminal Emulator to run these commands and get now errors with the "cd /sdcard/" command. Any help would be appreciated.

Just installed Rom Manager and got TWRP installed and used it to install AOSP_ancora_tmo-tim1928-4.1.2-Build6.zip recommended from Droidview best-custom-roms-for-samsung-galaxy-exhibit-4g-t679/ . I didn't add GAPPS.zip and didn't wipe data and cache because I wasn't sure and not it boots to the quad color X and just sits there with the different colors swirling around the X.
What do I do?

wipes are very important. In recovery wipe data/factory reset, wipe cashe, wipe dalvic. Every phone i've had when switching roms and all that is standard. you really dont want to have bits laying around currupting everything. If it helps hit the thanks button.
I've got the linaro CM10 custom rom installed and working but having a few issues. I install the Google PLay Store.apk version 4.4.2.2 which opens and closes right away. Thinking it was for the version of Android you have installed I uninstalled 4.4.2.2 and installed 4.0.28 on the Android version 4.1.2 I have installed and the same thing happens. What am I doing wrong?
I resolved the issues I was having with getting the Google Play store going by installing the Gapps that I had all that time.
I currently have an issue with the camera. It states that I've run out of space on my sdcard and that I should delete some files. Though this may be true I have a 32GB external sdcard with only 9GB used. I can't find anyplace in the camera's settings to use my external sdcard. When I do look at the files using efs manager it seems it melds the internal sdcard and external sdcard. Not sure if this has something to do with it.
Can anyone please help me with this issue? I would like to be able to take pictures and have 20GB of space left.

External_SD crashed and Link2sd messed everything

Hi guys,,, I need some guidance to fix this.
I have Galaxy Tab 2 7" p3113 that my daughter uses to play.
So,,, I had to install link2sd and 32gb microsd to link games + data to external sd because she installs too many games.
Everything was fine until sd die.
I bought a new sd, created 2 partitions 1 fat32 and other ext2 both primary as before.
The problem is all previous installed app were "removed" from tablet and I cant install anything from Play Store due Insufficient Storage Space.
Then I deleted all movies, pictures, wiped cache partition, dalvik cache even a factory reset. Now tablet has 4.31gb / 4.59gb free and I cant install anything.
I installed Omni rom to test but same result.
In my opnion, I think this issue was caused buy link2sd after sd died. But I dont know how to fix it.
Could anyone help me to fix this or point me some direction, please?
Thanks

that was my next option but I think it wont help because something is using all space.
After installing Omni rom I was able to install just 2 games: looney tunes and zombie. Once I got insufficient space error I uninstalled both games and Im not able to installed anything more.
Thats too weird.

where can i get [odin] stock rom? all links I got are dead.
thanks
Download the firmware from this site.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-P3113/
Do you know how to flash firmware using Odin?
If not here's how
Download Odin In your pc.
Link for odin-http://odindownload.com/SamsungOdin/
Now after installing Odin and open it.
select the PDA button in it and browse for the firmware file you downloaded before.
In your device go to download mode by pressing power+vol down.
Connect your device to your pc (make sure you have your usb drivers installed)
Now click start and wait. Once it says finished remove the USB cable.
Now if you are stuck in the boot logo for more than 30mins try going to recovery and perform a factory days reset.
Now you would have the official firmware.
Check the partitions now.
Cheers,

Before Odin step, I tried again and maybe I got it working.
1. full wipe + cache + dalvik
2. reflash Omni rom + SU
3. installed ES File Manager
4. installed busybox
5. installed Lucky patcher => troubleshoot => Remove fixes and backups
Storage space: 4.31gb free / 4.59gb
Now I could install some games like:
Looney tunes, zombie tsunami, talking tom, angela and Minions.
I dont know if this realy fixed my problem but I was able to install those games.
I wont abuse of my lucky today
Any advice on link2sd? Can I install it again and link apps to sd once I get in trouble with space? I read in somewhere samsung doesnt support link2sd.
Thanks for your advices

Well on the first thought you were actually using link2sd before your card got damaged so how no Samsung support?
Well if you think you have sorted it out, try it, if it does, well and good, if not Format/wipe system too along with data next time you wipe and flash
