Folks, this is the Real Deal! No need for Jigs! Yippeee!
1. Make sure your phone is a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate
2. Turn off phone
3. Plug mini-USB cable into phone BUT NOT into computer.
4. Hold down ONLY the 2 volume buttons and NOT the power button.
5. Plug USB cable into computer while holding down both Volume buttons ONLY.
Voila! the phone should be in Download Mode.

Isn't that the normal way for download mode or am I missing something?

Technically, no. They are plugging it in reverse.
Caution swyping, read at your own risk
Interesting method!
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine
Yes, but there are many instruction sets out there describing a three button procedure for download mode, somehow mixing up the recovery mode and download modes.

I'm so gad to have found this new information. I am absolutely amazed that this has not been discovered before. This is groundbreaking. Why didn't anyone ever try this before? It is truly a joyous day for Captivate users. Captivate users unite. Let us all join together as we enter download mode together. Call the president, call the pope... call your grandmother...
I wonder if this works for those who don't have a functioning 3 button combo.
So I assume you mean all captivate builds?

... This is just the regular download mode procedure. It doesn't matter if you plug the cable in to the phone first or to the computer, as long as you're holding up+down vol beforehand.
Works for me. Cool beans. I think I accidentally did this once before, and was like :O But I didn't realize that was how I did it.
the REAL trick is to keep the Vol buttons held for a second or two after the screen comes on when you plug in!
? What so I just pay 7 dls for my jig
But y try that and didn't work

Try pressing, and holding it for 2 secs or so, the green call button during a call!! It will work..
Thanks for the reply.
j_metselaars: It doesn't work. It's the green handset button right? Not the one on screen. Can you help me? Thanks.

My XDA 2 has no problems with this. It is stated in the maual anyway! But during a phonecall, you press and hold the green hardware button!!! Just as long as it takes to give you a certain Icon in the start bar.... It states speakerphone enabled...
That workes on my XDA 2 and should also work on XDA 1!!!
I would like to perfor reboot or restart (soft reset in Windows Mobile) withoit the power button, with a small application.
POWER OFF v3, available on Market doesn't work on Nexus1.
I cannot find one more...
Suggestion?
thanks
I use Reboot Control Widget and it works great for me!
It has several options:
Reboot Handset
Power Down
Recovery Console
Boot Loader
Wipe Handset
All work 100% of the time.
Root Required as with any reboot or power down command.
QuickBoot
u can download quickboot from market. it worls well on n1.

I could never understand why people get an app for a one step improvement...especially when it's already made so simple by the manufacturer.

quickboot however offer 2-click (1 open app, 1 choose option) access to "reboot" "reboot to recovery" "reboot to bootloader".

Quick Boot is a whopping 29kb installed and is easier to use despite what some members think. Wasted space is space unused.

Well I for one love it, saves a lot of wear and tear on the buttons on my phone. Anything that will save the wear and tear on my phone is imo a good thing. I don't know why people would want to hit all the buttons to do a reboot, enter recovery and so on its a pain in the butt.

So far, saving wear on the button is the best argument I've heard regarding such an app. That makes more sense... although I'd call HTC and get it repaired if that happened, which I doubt as the buttons seem durable enough. Anyway, your points are well-taken, but humbly disagreed with.
Hey guys,
Stock ROMs are my favorites; they bring stable experience for daily basis except for the ultra speed. (but stable means the most for me sometimes)
I used to root my previous phone only for some simple purpose, screenshots for example; then a few days ago I found a trick (from a forum written in Chinese, http://bbs.gfan.com/android-3345443-1-1.html) to do this without root permission.
Just press Power/Lock + Menu key (at the bottom left), the sticky note app will show up with an instant screenshot. Save it and you will get the screenshot in your /sdcard/quicknote/snapshot/ directory.
Hopefully this trick could help you out.
Note:
I've tested this on ME865, the Atrix 2, Asian Pacific version.
Other versions and models may not applied for this shortcut... sorry that I didn't noticed this before
Great! Thank you!
U sure this works on the a2?

Same here...
However if you do want a good free no-root-necessary (on the A2 at least) then get Screen Grabber... by default it is set to use root but it works when you uncheck the "use root" option.

Thats it. To capture screenshot, you need to do three combination keys.
Press "power on/lock + vol down + camera button". Hold three keys for 3 sec.
Tested on atrix 2 ics.

Did either of you look at the dates of the original posts... almost a year ago now. Did you not think that things were different on 2.3.6 than they are in ICS now?
Please think and read thoroughly before posting or replying, including when and why someone might have posted something. I understand both of you are noobs, so consider this your first little slap on the wrist.
Be glad it was I that did this, as others may not be so nice in the future. We are a good group here, but not reading and making posts that are not well thought out or just plain not researching will get you things you do not want in here.

Oh and by the way, Welcome to our little slice of XDA!!!

Yup in ICS we use just the power key + volume down key combination to take a screenshot
BTW do read the links posted by jim above.. theyre quite helpful, and just to let you know, some of old posts are related to GB, so do watch out for that post date before you reply to anything, can get very confusing otherwise.

Last night I noticed my power button sometimes would not lock my screen on my phone. Even when it would, it would lock and quickly bring the screen back on. Even sometimes occasionally I would press the button once quickly and the power off/reboot menu would appear. This morning I found a tab for my quick settings panel that puts the phone into sleep and have been using it all day. This has been a real pita. Now my phone as I am using it randomly sleeps and then brings up the power menu. Is there any way to replace the power button? I found barely anything on YouTube on this and and not sure if it is an easy or hard fix. For now, is there an app that I can disable my power button so my phone does not make me rage?
-Thanks

You can buy a power button, but replacing it ...you need skill and tool (not recommend for an average user). Try to bang the button on a hard plastic surface like washer/dryer surface. A number of people reported success with this method.(this is real, not a joke),

I have to test it out first, but I think I can disable the power button, however, it's only a work around, you need to replace the button for a permanent solution. If under warranty, it's the best way to go.

Hello!
Is my Phone beyond fixing?
After flashing cyanogenmod, gapps and some random zip from internet (I know what a terrible mistake)
my phone(nexus 4) does not boot.
-My screen is black
-Volume down+power button is unresponsive.
-When plugged into the pc, the pc makes a sound as when you connect a usb.
-When writing ADB devices in "adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702\sdk\platform-tools" cmd. the list shows nothing.
I've been googling for hours, your help is very much appriciated.
