I been reading a lot of threads about roms with free wifi tethering. I know that ATT charges for like 4GB of data plus tethering. Is this the same thing that's cooked into these roms? Can ATT track the data that's being used for the free wifi tethering and will it come from the 2Gb that I'm originally signed up for
I'm very interested in this, however, I only have the 2GB data plan. And I don't want to receive a large bill from ATT for going over my 2GB.
It runs off of your 2gb limit.
I used 5 gigs my last bill along with tethering wifi and usb to my computer,ps3 and wifes capped captivate, and incurred no extra charge on my unlimited.
Yes you can do that but it will come off your 2GB but if you use less than the 2GB they will not charge you for it. It's better than the "mandatory" extra $20 ATT requires for the "tethering" capability.
the stock android tether does not get detected by ATT, so it just uses your regular data plan. i assume the custom ROMs for the inspire are the same.

I have unlimited $10 data plan for non smart phones. When I got my skyrocket I used it with that "non-smart phone sim card" and it worked, I even disabled the carried detection and used tethering and worked flawlessly. I updated the phone to the first leaked ICS and continued to do the same without issues. When I updated it to the second leak last month, AT&T detected it as smart phone and changed the data plan to 3GB LTE for $30. I didn't root, disable the carrier detection or add anything special, just the "stock leak ICS"
I've been having the phone for almost 6 months. Any idea what could be the reason it was detected and how to prevent that?
I don't mind paying the $30 but I use my phone to stream video, games and so many things that 3GB or even 5GB won't be enough for me.
It's not too difficult for AT&T to detect when a device on a non-smartphone plan is using more than about 500KB of data per month.

many other carriers use unlimited data plan now..why would you need unlimited if you won't use it!! what's the point of having unlimited data plan if they don't want you to exceed 3GB or 5GB! it reminds me with home internet services when it started...sooner or later everyone will be on unlimited high speed data plans

Ya but the unlimited is for phone use not for tethering... What's the point of having smartphone unlimited if everyone is using it to tether and get internet for the whole house?? Also, do those other carriers allow tethering on their unlimited plans??

If they're not capping it, it's for one of two reasons.
1. The service is slow as balls, like T-Mobile's "unlimited" where you get 4G speeds for x-amount of data, and then unlimited access at the speed of molasses.
or
2. You're paying an arm and a leg for data.
I read other threads where people on LTE plans were getting Throttled and I know the solution is just changing the Apn to a Hsdpa Apn instead of LTE, but I'm not sure how to beat this one. You might try this solution but you are still going to use the 3gbs just a little slower. And for the record(To the people who feel it's right to pay twice or even 3x for internet when intending to tether, lmao)we get robbed enough by these corporations like AT&T & Verizon so if you can beat them at their own games then more power to you my friend. Just keep looking for the answer. There may be a way Good luck
Edit** I just figured out that a skyrocket is s galaxy s2(lol). Now your thread is much more amazing to me. How the hell were you on a $10 unlimited internet plan with a higher-end android? I thought the other phones used wap browsing & connected to apn that way?? Good job. Maybe you could pm me the apn config.

Its not a matter of IF but WHEN... they run serial number sweeps an put any smartphone on correct plan. You disable carrier check, an they look at abnormal use on certain data plans.... Randal Stevenson said a few weeks ago in an interview that when consumers use too much bandwidth, he has to invest capitol into rebuilding the network. The more money the company spends, the more eager they will be to look for means to make it back i.e. raising everyone's costs... so kudos to the 2% of folks that ruin it for the people that stay within reason!

Forgive me if this is not the best forum for this question.
I am on sprinit with unlimited data. Its been great when I am away and can tether my laptop from my phone (thanks kenny!). I never worry about data since its unlimited.
If I go to att or verizon (or t mobile), and they have a cap does tethering affect my cap? I would assume if it does then I assume I would hit 3 or 4 GB rather quickly.
Yes, it does.
Tethering counts as data usage, and goes against your cap.
Hi,
I will be moving onto a houseboat on saturday and am looking for an internet solution.
I am hoping to find the cheapest plan that offers me good speeds and unlimited data (if not at least a lot of GBs, MIN 10)
I will be living in marina del rey, in los angeles.
I am currently using a samsung galaxy S 1 (GT-i9000m) with straighttalk as my carrier. I pay 45$ a month for unlimited talk text and web (though the reviews say that if you go over 2GB you will likely get disconnected), the fineprints say that i am not allowed to do mobile hotspot on this plan (and they dont have an option to add that feature) but I use it everyday on the bus for webbrowsing and have not yet received any notifications (2 months in)
I would like to buy a seperate mobile hotspot device (be it a cheap used phone, or a dedicated device) and use it as my internet router on the boat. I also refuse to sign a contract, so am only considering monthly plans.
I am a heavy data consumer who sometimes uses over 100GB a month, but if need be, i will curb my habits when on the boat.
I have already done a somewhat rudimentary comparison of my options which i will list below.
T-Mobile has a cheap hotspot device for 40$ here http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?class=prepaid&cell-phone=T-Mobile-4G-Mobile-HotSpot-No-Annual-Contract-Refurbished
and they have a plan that has unlimited 4G speeds for the first 5GBs for only 30$ a month. http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
I do not think I would be allowed to hotspot on this plan, and i do not know if they have an option to add that feature for xx$
also, that hotspot device is not LTE compatible (i think), but could I get LTE speeds on that plan if i bought an LTE hotspot phone/device?
Virgin Mobile has a plan for 35$ that claims unlimited 4G (though the fineprints say that only the first 10GB are 4g speeds), this plan is made for hotspots, so theres no problems there. http://www.virginmobileusa.com/mobile-broadband-plans/broadband-2-go/overview/
and they have hotspots for 80$ here http://www.virginmobileusa.com/shop...-2-go/sierra-overdrive-pro/features/#features
MetroPCS has a reasonable offer as well
they have a 55$ plan that has true unlimited LTE service http://www.metropcs.com/metro/detail/per+month+4GLTE/4G4ME55
but i have been told by one of their reps that I cannot hotspot with this plan and cannot pay to add that feature.
Would they know if i put their SIM in a hotspot device and used it as such?
Which hotspot device would work well with MetroPCS LTE?
I think those are the only options i have found.
do you guys know of any other ones?
did i miss anything?
how does the carrier know if i am tethering?
thanks!
did anyone reversing your plan its because you can bypass it? right now I'm on $70 plan 50 for unlimited calls and text and $20 for unlimited 4G data. as advertised (unlimited data on browsing mobile 2.5GB on mobile hotspot) 2.5GB lol I'm on 20gb now and it keeps on going

I imagine it is much easier for T-mobiles automated system to track total data usage vs tethered data usage.
I know I used to have the 2GB plan, and getting throttled sucks. My question is, why do you need to tether 20 gb a month?
Also, why does everyone on this forum trying to find ways around paying their bills? At first I thought people were having real issues tethering, then I realized people are having issues tethering, that didn't have tethering on their plans. And were COMPLAINING that they couldn't tether.
I'm going to preface this by saying that I am NOT on a T-Mobile unlimited data plan, and I do NOT use alot of tethering data. In fact I've only used it 3 times since October when I switched to T-Mobile from Sprint.
My Wife and I are on the Family Share Plan, with 10GB each. We both have maxed out our 20GB stash, and rarely use more than 3 or 4 GB a month, with the occasional blirp to 6 or 7.
I have Note 4, rooted with TEKXodus 7.2. It of course has a hotspot hack built in. I had an emergency and needed to do something on my laptop that would not work on my phone, and had no access to WiFi. Used about 500GB. Just to be clear, the data used with the hotspot on my note 4 DOES still count against my monthly 10GB of LTE allotment. It's not like I'm getting "free data" as those on the unlimited plans are. They get unlimited smartphone data, but only 7GB of hotspot data. The same hotpsot hack also masks the data so it's counted as smartphone data not hotspot data. Apparently T-Mobile can now detect this, and is supposed to be cracking down on it by bumping people down to a tiered plan, or booting them from the network all together.
I noticed on my My T-Mobile app that it shows .5 GB of 0.00
I don't "fit the picture" of the people John Legere is complaining about when they announced cracking down on the unlimited tethering abusers.
Should I be concerned since my plan technically does not come with a tethering allotment like the unlimited plans do. This has never happened in the other 3 months where I've used a small amount of tethering data.
