I have been reading the same information as the rest of you about the VS G-Tablet, Staples and now Sears.
And I wonder how everyone is coming up with such wild suppostions based on almost NO really factual information.
Staples recall of inventory is a fact. I noticed that they are returning stock to VS because of some kind of flaw. We don't know what it is. We don't know if it is terminal or fixable. We don't know anything about remedies.
But whatever it is, it's not serious enough for them to start calling or notifying customers to return units and get their money back?!? If it really is a fatal hardware flaw, surely they will not get by without taking care of customers who already have purchased tablets.
Seems to me we need more info about why Staples did what they did and what is wrong before anything realistic can be determined.
Also, someone reported Sears is following Staples' path. Not trying to flame the poster, but we have (1) a report of no stock in that area (No Big Deal -- we never had any here!! ); and (2) we have an employee (not likely management at the level that would cover Sears corporate operations) saying they've had a lot of returns and don't know when they'll get any (again, nothing new there). Certainly not a stock recall like Staples.
I was in one of the area Sears stores here today and the little cardboard display they put up when they don't have VS G-Tablets in stock was still there. In fact, it had been updated to show the $379.00 price available today.
My point is that until we find out what the problem is that Staples is using as a reason for their action -- we really are just wasting our time speculating. And I certainly think the news media and the A**** fanboys are just spewing the garbage I would expect of them.
Am I the only person around who has noticed that a pile of us -- ranging from devs and hardware experts, down to just every day good old folks -- have been using, programming and flogging the G-Tablet for what (five-six weeks now?) and not one of us has raised a report of a fatal flaw????????????????
Sure. Grant that VS and whoever didn't do an adequate job of development and rushed the G-Tab to market. Grant that the software is not what we think is needed nor what we want. I can see that if it worked faster and better, it might be okay for some basic users.
Those of us who want more seem to be doing all right.
And one by one we have been fixing things.
Speaking for myself, I am not writing off the G-Tablet yet. I have two -- one from Sears and one from Office Depot. I could run down and return both right now.
But I'm not. I'm going to use the stuff that is available to me now to make both work like I want. Whatever else someone may say, it will do what I want it to do with the resources we already have on hand. And unless everyone else gives up, I see no reason we can't go right on and stay ahead of all the folks who are not smart enough to see the potential and go after it.
I am the minister -- so please don't start on plans for the funeral until the patient is pronounced dead for real. I don't see anything remotely close to that yet!

P. S. -- Sorry this rant got so long, but I just felt someone had to put some balance into what is being said about all of this. And I intended no flames for anyone who may disagree with my point of view. I am a minister and I am redemptive -- it's my job to try to "save" things!!

As long as they release the kernel source, I don't really care whether Viewsonic recalls all their G Tablets or not. Because I am 100% certain there will be lots of other Tegra 2 tablets which will ship with updated firmware, which will give us a base image for Gingerbread and for Honeycomb down the road. As long as there's somebody willing to compile kernels and glue a kernel into the ROM images from very similar devices, well, we'll be just fine here and the G Tablet will continue to provide us with plenty of useful life over the next few years.
From what I can see from an earlier thread about a poster mentioning using the fact that several of the abilities the gtablet has on the cover do not work out of the box to return the tablet without having to pay the restocking fee. I believe that Sears and Staples are sending the units back to viewsonic and demanding that the touted abilities actually do in fact work before they get them back. (this can only help the tablet unless Viewsonic decides to give up.)
I really hope it stays around, Bought one for the wife, now I want one. (I got a nook color that behaves even worse out of the box. but I figure i'll root/rom it until it does work as the smaller size is definitely more portable.)
Even if Viewsonic were to give up I don't see our tablet caring much. The Zpad firmware works pretty well, the VegaN that I am running now is working very well, and TnTLite works pretty well.
I feel for the customers that bought this and are not techies. I recall the first time I turned mine on it was a barrage of force closes. Everything you touched would force close. It took a factory reset from the settings menu to make it stop. Flash was non-existent, clock had amnesia on wakeup, wifi lost it's mind.... If I was a regular customer I would have been PO'ed... Not known what to do, and it would have gone back with a "I will NEVER buy another Viewsonic product ever" mentality.
If all the above had not occurred out of the box this tablet may have been kept by more people. I'm sure lots of folks would have been plenty happy if it just worked. Most would not have known the real potential that was being strangled by the software overlay, and most would not care.
I think the biggest issue has to do with how things are sold in this country nowadays. Back when America made things, they had control of them. They touched them, tested them, and had a lot of pride in making sure they sold a good product. Viewsonic gained it's reputation by selling one of the best products.
This tablet is not made by Viewsonic. I don't really know how much Viewsonic had to do with it besides just signing on to have there name on the device in hopes of name recognition boosting sales. It reminds me of how companies sign athletes to endorse crappy products in hopes people will buy it because of the name. That is going to bite a lot of companies in the behind. Unless my perception of how American companies desire to do business is completely wrong then this path needs to stop.
Everything seems to need to be done as fast as possible, and with profit being the main goal. Who cares if it is the best.. Who cares if it could be better.. Just get it out there and make money.. Support? Why should we support our product? Why should we put a restore image online? Why should we update our website with info that might help folks understand what is being done about the issues?
This same stuff is happening with lots of companies. Sylvania is another example of the outsourced spin off type of product, there are many others.
I think we deserve better, and if a company has to have there rear end handed to them to figure out that quality, and customer satisfaction still counts then so be it....
If and I mean if VS decided to bail on the gtablet I would think they open the source code to the community. This is a great device.
At this point it doesn't matter, even if viewsonic abandons it.
It's a reference tegra 2 device for current app developers in the states (at least that's how I see it), we have badass roms for it, the advent vega is getting 2.3 which is easily ported...so it's all good.

Nice posts. But there is no mystery that VS is getting these back. It's about their profit from sales of a marketable product. Whether this tablet goes the wayof the Edsel is immaterial to us afficianados but its still been a good ride. I think other tabs may sink us but so what.

here's my take on it, and what they need to fix for Joe Consumer
I can readily guess why these are going back, and a Staples rep I talked to actually mentioned that same thing. The stock firmware is bad.
But I don't mean just the Tap N' Tap UI, I mean the boot loops and FC's that occur. We've all seen them, even on TnT Lite. There is some instability that I am convinced has to do with how these devices were imaged.
Here's the problem -- here in XDA, we have clockworkmod and a great community to get us around those issues. But Joe Consumer has neither (unless they search on their own). And due to TnT's stupidity, they can't even download an offline update to at least attempt to fix the problems. Think about it...you're a user with a reboot loop, so you call Viewsonic for help. What can they do? There's no way to wipe the cache, wipe user data or even re-flash the device using the standard tools. It's insane.
What they need to do ASAP is deploy a firmware update that 1) can be run offline with a microSD card and 2) has a more enhanced recovery like clockworkmod to at least give the user the ability to wipe the user data or cache. And, if the user doesn't have a microSD card, they should send them a 1GB card, preinstalled with the recovery image, at no charge. I think it's an absolute requirement I hope VS are reading this and rip their TnT devs a new arse to fix this debacle before they give up on the device completely.
Still, worse case scenario is that we lose VS support but still have the zPad and Vega to look at, even it we don't have source. We have options, at least.

I just got my g tab and am having all the issues u described out of the box. Internet crashes,WiFi dropping, force closes and all, did u just do the restart and it fixed everything? If so how do I do that and if u did more, what else do I have to do? I love my tablet and think it so much better than my friends ipad, but the issiues do bother me.....but I'll never return it, just want to fix it

When I got my very first device (before TnT Lite existed), it was terrible. Lots of FC's, and at least twice it rebooted on me for no reason and wiped my user data. As I recall, doing a manual data wipe helped but it was never really fully stable until I wiped it with nvflash (the bekit image).
Since then, they only time I've ever seen major instability is either when testing mods, which is understandable, or going back to stock.

Apologies,is that an app I can download out of the market? sorry still a newb... and what mod do u use that makes it run so well now? Is that what nvflash is?

Well.... We have to go back in history. (Only about 6 weeks ago)
The force closes "Might" go away if you can get into settings and find the factory reset selection. It may be under the privacy tab. I can't tell you for sure because I am not running TnT right now.
The wifi issue was a problem when the device woke up and there was a patch made by a smart guy named Bekit.
The time issue was something where the time zone would not stick. It would always reset itself back to GMT if I recall.
There were patches for all of them back then, and I had them all installed at one point. None are needed anymore.
My suggestion to you, if you actually want to keep the tablet is to read the instructions in the post below and flash a new rom. TnTLite is based on your stock firmware. It just has the bad parts removed, and good stuff put in. All of the major issues should hopefully go away. As Roebeet just told you Nvflash could be in your future to do a clean wipe but I hope not. The stock out of the box firmware is really bad. It is unfortunate because the hardware is really good.

No, nvflash is fairly advanced stuff so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are fairly technical or if its the last resort. You need APX drivers setup on your PC as well as the nvflash image.
Try a user data wipe, as a first step. In stock, it's under Settings and Security, I believe. If that doesn't help, I'd recommend clockworkmod recovery next and try to do a clear cache, user data wipe and a SD partition fix, in that order (do the next if the previous one doesn't fix it). I'd do nvflash last.
I personally love nvflash, but like I mentioned you need to be somewhat technical to use it.

Hang in there. I have been working on my second G-Tab and when I started it up, it worked worse than the first one did!!!
But it seems to me like if you just keep using common sense and rebooting to give it time to sort things out, and then using the info in these forums to get it together -- all will turn out well and you will have a really great tablet.
Just be patient and don't get ahead of yourself and cause yourself grief like I have done a couple of times!! Best wishes....

I personally suspect that the fatal flaw is no high price contract with a network provider.
As was stated.....if there really was a fatal hardware flaw we would almost definately know about it on this forum. The stock UI was poor but still not fatal. I would tend to agree that we need far more info before jumping to a conclusion about the life expectancy of this most excellent device (after a few mods).
I bought this Gtablet when my wife and I were out doing last minute Christmas shopping on Friday afternoon. No actual live unit on display or available at Sears so bought one based on hope. My first impressions were very mixed. It was painfully slow when I first booted it up while waiting for my wife who had gone into another store and I waited for her in the car (plugged in using inverter we carry with us). Later when we got home it downloaded the update and that helped the speed issue (but still sluggish) but I've run into all kinds of issues that have me ready to return this thing.
First thing I noticed is the number of times that apps force close on the GT including the browser built into the unit. That is about to drive me nuts but I discovered another even more major issue - for me. I planned to use this device to log into our webmail server when I'm travelling in order to get my mail. I can log into the webmail and I can bring up the mail but when I open a piece of email I cannot scroll the screen to read the entire email. I also have a Moto DX and I can read my email via web just fine on that (don't like it because of the small screen and keyboard). So, why does my DX work fine with our webmail client and the GT not work? I am clueless and ticked off.
I was going to return it today but my wife wants me to hold off and call Viewsonic support but I have my doubts that they will be of much help. So, I'm wondering if putting up a custom ROM might help because of using a different kernel?
I have a couple of weeks to return this but I want it either working or gone so I have a proposal. I'm new to Android and don't want to take the chance of bricking this and losing my money and I need this done quickly in order to make a decision. I"m willing to pay a modest fee for someone "KNOWLEDGEABLE" to possiby teamviewer into one of my machines to to root/rom this unit. There would absolutely have to be a return to stock method in case the new rom doesn't work either.
I have a Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine, Win 7 Prof. 64 bit and a Win XP 32 bit machine available to use. In reading through a number of threads here it seems that various iterations of Windows have issues with the drivers for this. You can PM me here.

Unless you mess around with the bootloader, you cant really brick it. Nobody has yet, and I doubt you would be the first.

Many of us understand your experience. Most of us acknowledge that the first software was not what it should have been.
I have a modded machine which is super. I have an OTA 3389 tablet which is more than acceptable.
From your comments, it sounds to me like your plan to return is the best course of action.
The G-Tablet can be a super machine, but not without some interest in working with and improving it on your part.
Sorry this is not better news. Maybe someone else will respond with a different idea.

Yep, just check the dev forum for instructions on installing new custom firmware. I'd also recommend making sure that you install clockwork mod 0.8 to ease backup/restores.
...OTOH from what I've heard is that the new stock fw 3389 is quite a bit better than what it ships with. And from there you can add a few minor updates, rooting, maybe the performance pack, sideload some apps and possibly the market "fix" which might be good enough for you, but even then I'd really have to recommend installing clockwork mod simply for the ease of making an image of a nicely working modified system and then being able to restore that if something messes it up...
Tablet is really nice, stable, and fast once properly setup and it's not really too hard to do any of the above IF you FOLLOW the instructions and READ them ENTIRELY and the caveats BEFOREHAND.
Really it's almost plug and play...

Here's a trick that works for me: if I zoom in a little on the webmail page that I cannot scroll, after the zooming in I am able to scroll to view the entire email.
I guess that soon you'll find the lack of Copy/Paste. Apple was run out of town for this and Windows Phone 7 too. At least with the G Tablet the lack of Copy/Paste seems to be limited to the stock apps.

Now for a new issue, I formatted a 16gig SD (FAT32) and put that in, the unit says that it knows that it is there but when I connect the unit using the USB cable to my Win 7 (64) machine its finds the machine, I tell it to activate USB transfer mode but I don't see SD2 in there. I wanted to transfer a pile of music onto it but can't do that since I can't see it. I tried transferring the music directly to the sd and then putting it into the G but when I do that it doesn't find anything.
I didn't really find anything on point in searching so if I'm missing that please point me to the thread.
I think I will go ahead and work with this. I've used and moded Win Mobile phones for the last ten years but am new to Android.
The offer for help still stands if anyone wants to take advantage and I would like to use it as a learning experience as I get into Android.
Oh yeah, thanks to all for the super fast responses. That is really appreciated. Even though it only shows that I have 5 or six posts here that isn't quite accurate. Many years ago when this site first opened I found it because I was using XDA phones but those were all WinMO at the time. I drifted away for a long time and when I came back now I am a new member again here. No longer a WinMo user and I really don't like Windows Phone 7 so I bought a Moto DX and love the phone, got my wife an HTC Incredible (she gave up her iPhone for that and that took a LOT of convincing on my part) but I am pretty much really happy with the Android OS and where it seesm to be going.
What I do love about the G is the size, the Galaxy Tab is just too small and the 800 horizontal resolution is too small so when I found a 10" tablet with 1024 and only $379.95 it sounded like a great deal. The screen angle is a ***** but I can live with that but I am sorely missing the Market (GMarket is sad). Looking forward to getting this machine rooted and rom'ed and up and running like it should be.

Install the latest update and do a factory restore inside the security section of settings.
Then if you want install the tnt enhancement pack from the device section. Don't worry about returning to stock because they don't even open the box when you return or exchange. If they did, they would have no idea what they would be looking at.

You should be able to see the microsd on the Gtab using, for example, ES File explorer. It'll be at /sdcard2.
As for seeing /sdcard2 from your pc, I thought I saw a post saying that if you have winamp installed on the gtab, it has an option for mounting sdcard2, and when that's enabled you can see /sdcard2. Haven't tried that myself.

I think I will go ahead and work with this. I've used and moded Win Mobile phones for the last ten years but am new to Android.
The offer for help still stands if anyone wants to take advantage and I would like to use it as a learning experience as I get into Android.
Oh yeah, thanks to all for the super fast responses. That is really appreciated. Even though it only shows that I have 5 or six posts here that isn't quite accurate. Many years ago when this site first opened I found it because I was using XDA phones but those were all WinMO at the time. I drifted away for a long time and when I came back now I am a new member again here. No longer a WinMo user and I really don't like Windows Phone 7 so I bought a Moto DX and love the phone, got my wife an HTC Incredible (she gave up her iPhone for that and that took a LOT of convincing on my part) but I am pretty much really happy with the Android OS and where it seesm to be going.
What I do love about the G is the size, the Galaxy Tab is just too small and the 800 horizontal resolution is too small so when I found a 10" tablet with 1024 and only $379.95 it sounded like a great deal. The screen angle is a ***** but I can live with that but I am sorely missing the Market (GMarket is sad). Looking forward to getting this machine rooted and rom'ed and up and running like it should be.

Hi racedog, actually I think you are ahead of the game. You seem to have made a lot of progress if you bought this Christmas eve.
How did you get it to run in the parking lot of the mall on Christmas eve? Even with a power inverter for power, hoe did you get a WiFi connection?
So far my G Tablet is stock and I am over-all happy with it. However, after Viewsonics post that they won't be providing any support for swapping the LCD screen, I feel they are missing the point. Their post said they would be anouncing some new products soon (my guess is at CES right after the first of the year).
I might end up taking my G Tablet back to Sears and waiting for the newer, more powerful and maybe more promising second generation tablets I am sure are to come at CES.
This tablet has been fun and I may keep it, but, I would really like to know the price points on the new models at CES.
Sucks out of the box.
Erase it and start over.
Load Clockwork Recovery Mod first! Put the update.zip on the sdcard, don't worry about the external SD method.
Once you have that boot mod, it's next to impossible to screw it up.
Flash that then get TNT lite 3.1.0 plus the supplement
Make sure you format the SDCARD using the advanced menu 2048 and 0 swap r it will crash on ya.
Do the full market fix. Download Dolphin HD and you will have a very usable tablet.

So, why does my DX work fine with our webmail client and the GT not work? I am clueless and ticked off.
I was going to return it today but my wife wants me to hold off and call Viewsonic support but I have my doubts that they will be of much help. So, I'm wondering if putting up a custom ROM might help because of using a different kernel?
I have a couple of weeks to return this but I want it either working or gone so I have a proposal. I'm new to Android and don't want to take the chance of bricking this and losing my money and I need this done quickly in order to make a decision. I"m willing to pay a modest fee for someone "KNOWLEDGEABLE" to possiby teamviewer into one of my machines to to root/rom this unit. There would absolutely have to be a return to stock method in case the new rom doesn't work either.
I have a Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine, Win 7 Prof. 64 bit and a Win XP 32 bit machine available to use. In reading through a number of threads here it seems that various iterations of Windows have issues with the drivers for this. You can PM me here.

I will be doing the clockwork mod and putting on a new rom. The question is about formatting the card. You mention above used "advanced menu 2048", I don't know where I would find that on android on the G, or are you referring to something else?
I didn't get it connected while in the car, I just had it plugged in so that I could take a look at it and start putting a charge on it. I didn't connect until I got home. However, I DID try connecting it in the car using my Moto DX with wireless tether. The dx showed that it was running but the G never found the signal from the phone. It did see a few other secured wifi connections but it didn't see the phone. I have no idea whether this was because I don't have wifi tethering setup correctly on the DX or what the deal is but I figured I would work with that later.
I don't really care if I have to tether via usb with the phone but wifi is a lot cleaner and easier if possible. I know that easy tether and pdanet are out there but I haven't checked to see if they have an android client yet, I've only used them on my Win 7 netbook.

I found that the stock rom cannot use ad-hoc networks. I had to use the hack for the 3G Hotspot app on the DX to get it working on the Gtab. Once I upgraded to TnT lite than I was able to use Wireless Tether and stopped getting all the drops and reconnects too.
I really think that you will be happy with this as soon as you mod it with what's here in this community. I have only been here for less than a week and have found answers to all my questions. Good luck.

I appreciate the offer but because of the holidays I won't be able to take you up on it until probably Tuesday, maybe tomorrow Monday if I get REALLY lucky. I going to be trying to do as much as I can myself until them.
I wondered if the problem might be that the stock rom did not recognize ad hoc networks because I looked for the option to select it and it was not there. Thanks for that info.

Forgot, the winamp solution didn't work. I selected the mount option in winamp but it did nothing. I will get back to this issue once I get the greater issue of the rom and wifi connect to my phone fixed. Those are the real biggies that need fixing first.

Thanks to rothnic this new G has CWM installed and tnt like running on it along with Market and other apps that I've downloaded from it. What a huge difference this makes, my constant FC's seem to have stopped happening and I am now very happy with this unit. What a world of difference.
The screen is still a major issue but I can live with it (for now, will keep watching the screen swapping thread) but the device is fast, functional and completely usable whereas 24 hours ago I was set to return it to Sears but my wife talked me out of that and to try fixing it.
Again, special thanks to rothnic for all the "above and beyond" help and patience and also to all of the Gtab community here for the help and suggestions.

Hello Everyone, First and foremost I want to thank the Triumph Community and all the mods/developers especially isaacj87 for all the hard work and dedication. I have had my Triumph for over 2 weeks now and I can't say I am blown away with it but for now I am happy. The triumph has a lot of features and it's on par with many other phones from 2010 hahah. The service as we all know either works great in your area or it will piss you of and you will want to slam it on the concrete. Regardless here's the problems I currently face that I hope CM7 will fix:
--GPS loading times are incredibly slow, To be more clear, after you enable the gps, it will take FOREVER to "locate location". (At other times after a cold reset it will work perfectly, weird)
--Low Volume (Volume sounds at 50%) on Pandora and sometimes calls. Almost everyone got pissed of at this and some have returned their phones.
--Lack of autofocus on the camera.
--Flickering issues when resuming phone. (I have never had an issue with this and honestly it wouldn't bother me at all.
--Dual Band Radio. Would It even be possible to have it just like the Intercept?
These issues are tolerable at times, but I am really desperate to see cm7 already. Please let me know what issues Cyanogen would be able to fix or not. Thanks in advance. (Note to Isaacj87 Hopefully you read this, anyways, I bet you will have cm7 fully working within a month and a half, if not sooner, Expect a generous donation when you are done btw!) Also If I can request someone kind enough to feature a step by step guide from root all the way to 2.3 later on! Sorry for typing all this but these are the most common concerns we Triumph owners face! Thanks in advance again!
Don't forget Battery Life!
I am seeing about 16 hours battery life on mine - just had to install Juice Defender and set my exchange email to come in manually instead of push. Before that I was seeing 8 hours or so.
Yea after I installed juice defender the battery life became comparable to any one else with a smart phone I've seen. It doesn't hold a candle to my g1 when it had a fresh extended battery that would let it idle for 4 days without dying and let me browse the web and the like for about 8 hours and only drain the battery half way, but that's a special case. Juice defender works pretty well at keeping the drain down when not in use.

Why shouldn't the Triumph be given some dev support? Because It's prepaid? Some people don't have the luxury to buy expensive phones and crazy $100 plans. We already have enough bills as it is. Btw, This phone WILL be purchased by many, and cm7 will make it work perfectly in the long run. If we can get Cyanogenmod soon, this may increase sales and Virgin Mobile may bring in better smartphones if it realizes there is a potential market. Quit hating already.

If they get 3g going faster and better GPS, and if they get the device going much faster too, I would be happy to try it out on Cyanogenmod, for now, the current build hasn't even been released and it sounds far from stable. This is all a step in the right direction though, happy to see these forums added and I hope to see some official Cyanogenmod support in the future.

I understand that there are some issues with the phone. Fortunately, I don't seem to have any of these problems.
In response to some of your concerns, CM7 still is Android. Yeah, it's packed with features, but it's still based off of AOSP. However, some issues could be resolved. GPS locking might be able to be tweaked and it's possible to adjust volume levels.
The other issues seem to be hardware related. I'm not sure what you mean by "lack of autofocus" because it's an autofocus camera.
Obviously, since I have some issues, I'd like to iron them out as well. We'll see what Motorola does with their source code packages and we can take it from there.
I've just got back from looking at the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" on display in the Carphone Warehouse.
Has anybody else noticed that the screen doesn't respond smoothly to pinch-to-zoom gestures in Google Maps? I tried exactly the same thing on a couple of other tablets on display - e.g. TF Prime, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and they responded exactly as I would expect. The errant behaviour I noticed was that the zoom didn't always change the way I expected it to - some gestures resulted in wildly different zoom levels than I was expecting, and it just didn't do a good job of tracking two fingers at once. (Just sweeping one finger over the screen was okay so far as I could see.)
For some reason, the stock web browser seemed to be pretty well behaved. I tried rebooting the device, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Have Samsung cheaped out on the input digitiser, or was the unit in the store faulty?
I'd appreciate any feedback - at £200 I was walking into the store ready to buy one, but my experience with Google Maps really put me off.
I would never use a store model as a performance benchmark. They are good for getting a physical feel for the device but when you have a popular device that just came out that tons of people are using, installing different (Possibly malicious) apps, and just basically abusing they tend to never perform the way they will when you actually own the device.
I will test out maps myself but I believe this device is plenty fast enough for anything you throw at it.

I don't have any issues with Google Maps on my tablet. I haven't used it that often, but I don't notice anything unusual when zooming in and out.
I made a video and went to post it to youtube but it's not letting me. Basically Maps is smooth as butter. I had no trouble zooming in and out and moving around the entire map. No lag at all.
Thank you both for your responses, it's been very helpful to get some real world opinions! I clearly need to give this tablet a second chance.

I would definitely say at least restart the tablet before you start using it. Makes a world of difference.
It's my experience that this tablets screen is a little unresponsive. My phone has a very responsive screen as compared to the tablet and when I use the tablet with a mouse all the issues go away. I use a Logitech mouse (M110) I bought locally for under $10.00 with this tablet. When using the mouse there is no lag and unresponsiveness.
I still think this tablet is great and am very happy using it daily especially with the app "tablet talk" installed.

I have to agree. Sometimes it's perfect. Sometimes it acts like it's doing something else and too busy to respond. It seems to be most prominent in the all the different browsers I've tried. And it seems to get worse as I add more apps - though I never get past more than half-a-dozen or so before it becomes so bad that I give up and start over. I've tried to isolate it to one specific app, but it even does it in a box-stock configuration. Performing a factory reset fixes it for a time, and then it gradually starts to degrade again.
Sadly, I'm returning it.

I notice a stutter sometimes when I am loading the screen up from sleep with the widgets, but after that its fine and I purposely never reboot just to see how it all lasts.
Reboots seriously do help me though. My home screen will be laggy about hallway through the day but I reboot and then, its smooth.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. It almost sounds like there could be a couple of hardware versions out there. Is there any way to find out, as one does with Device Manager in Windows, what the exact hardware configuration is of an Android device? A useful app from the market?
Does ICS come with an easily accessed CPU usage monitor? It sounds like the screen response might be worse when the processor is loaded up...?
(I'm also not familiar enough with Linux to know what command lines might work, if there's no app which would show hardware configuration.)
I'm hoping to get back to the Carphone Warehouse tomorrow, and will ask the salesperson nicely if it's possible to try a new device that hasn't been put out on display...
I'm pretty sure it's bad form to keep replying to your own topic, but here goes anyway!
My plans changed at the last minute this morning and I had another chance to visit the shop. I discovered the CPU usage overlay in the developer options, and noted that when idle there didn't seem to be any gremlins sucking up all the CPU time. Maps was still a problem, and the gallery was a bit wonky too. It might just be me, but I also found precision selection (e.g. picking a hyperlink out of small text in the browser) to be a little less likely to succeed than I expected.
I wanted to speak to the staff about looking at another example of the P3110, but they were generally uninterested and I had to get back to work after hanging around for 20-30 minutes. Anyway, after looking at their returns policy, it seems like you have no rights to a return an item you buy in-store unless there is a fault which you can convince the staff about. Given their lack of interest in the problem when I brought it up on my last visit, I'm not really willing to risk that!
I'd suggest that anyone interested in buying one of these tablets does so over the phone or internet, because you then have a 14 day return period. The Carphone Warehouse terms and conditions state that if you want to return a tablet ordered online or on the phone that you must adhere to the following:
"Tablets:
* You can turn the tablet on and try it out. But you can't make any calls or send texts or emails, or add anything to its memory (such as saving numbers or taking a photo)
* The tablet must be returned in its original condition"
...So presumably, keep it clean and do a factory reset before you take it back!
For my part, I wouldn't want to buy one without a get-out clause, so I will be considering this option.
To conclude:
After this second visit, I think that many people would be fine with the device - it does respond to your inputs, it's just that under some circumstances it might take two or three goes to get the desired response. With a little patience this is not a problem at all, and considering the price point it's probably acceptable.
Unfortunately, I guess I'm not so patient as I once was - I'm too used to the way that my Galaxy S (Stock 2.3.5 ROM, XXJVT) responds to inputs, and I'd rather not take a step backwards. Ultimately, I'm now considering combining my desire to have a small ICS tablet with a mobile phone upgrade, in order to justify a Galaxy S III with its larger display (once the blue version is fixed/available).
Samsung would probably be happy with this outcome - after all, I'm now talking myself into spending £500 on one of their products instead of 'just' £200!

Intuitively, the first thing I checked. In my case, nothing obvious indicated by the built-in task manager. I even tried using the setting Developer Options -> Do not Keep Activities
I hadn't seen that before, but it didn't help.

It reminds me of the first attempt by VZW/Moto at rolling out GB on for the Droid X. Some people praised it. Others cursed it. Some people got a new X2.
I was a cusser. Happily humming along now, still on FroYo.
It's true, though. Hardware continually gets revised and updated - not always for good. It could be as simple as changes in tolerances, or supplier's manufacturing processes.
I just wanted to post, saying thank you to everyone here.
I've had my Infuse for almost 2 years now, and while it will kinda be sad to let it go here soon for a Nexus 4, I have to say, you all turned my opinion on the phone around.
I run through AT&T, and when I got the phone, it was my first smartphone. My biggest problem was all the AT&T bloatware on it. It kept running in the background, making it hard to do anything as it lagged up my phone. It really ruined it for me. I looked up online to see when I could finally leave Froyo and maybe see if it would run faster on GB, and learned about the Kies upgrade. I started the method, and it sat there for half a day doing nothing but sitting at 30% until I finally disconnected it in frustration. Turns out, it was upgrading, but the cord wasn't good enough to do it, and I had bricked my phone. I panicked, as I was trying to find a job, and without my phone, I was screwed.
I came to this site looking for help. When I finally tried a new cord and Heimdall one-click, it worked gloriously (big thank you to qwkster for all of your help on that with your informative posts here). I was so excited to run gingerbread, but something was wrong. I couldn't save contacts, and my phone just generally didn't want to work. I didn't want to try messing with it again, because I didn't want to break it. Eventually, my phone bricked itself, and at this point, I checked to find a warranty on it. My warranty had expired 3 months after I got the phone, so as AT&T tried to run me through the hoops of either an insurance claim or an early upgrade, both of which cost me money I didn't have, I finally told them I was not doing either, and told her that the best help she could give me was telling me that I don't have a warranty. I decided to root my phone that night.
After 4 hours of searching for a one-click that rooted my phone and removed all the bloatware, I finally found one of qwksters helpful posts and got it to work. My phone was finally mine, actually mine to fully control, and it was great. It ran so fast, and it just felt amazing to use, I was so excited. I started working at a corporate radioshack after that, and thats when I started getting some nice cases for it to just make me feel more like this phone was truly my phone. The cases made people think I had a stronger phone than I did, and it just made it that much more awesome.
The night before Halo 4 released though, I had remembered that halo 4 would support smartglass, and went to download the app. M$, being the great people they are, didn't let it support GB, so I looked on here again to find a work-around, and learned about Cyanogen Mod. My night was cleared and set ahead of me, and I prepared to turn my already awesome phone into something even better.
I did all the work-arounds, and got my phone upgraded to JB. At first, I worried that there were some big issues with it, such as facebook sync not working. Found out, that was really a minor issue that made me worry a lot, and it was fixable, though I've been too lazy to use it lol. Either way, I got to work to next day, and my Store Manager was dumbfounded at my phone, questioning why I didn't get a new phone at the store. I told him it wasn't a new phone, and he was surprised at what I had done to my phone, one that was discontinued and kinda forgotten about. I love what this phone does now, I love what google did with Android, and even moreso, I love the xda community for making me realize just how good an Android phone can be when the user is given control of it.
The biggest downfall is the battery life, but it lasts a day so its really not that bad. Plus, we have chargers all over radioshack, so its normally fine lol. Either way, this phone is spectacular, and I have to admit, I will hate to see it go, but I can't wait to try out an officially branded google phone.
When the day comes that I jump over to the Nexus 4 forums, I just want it to be known here that you guys made my Android experience the best it could be. The CM team and qwkster in particular are two of the greatest assets to this, and I can't thank you enough. I love this phone, and I love google even more for how well they have done with their OS and supported the community to do even greater.
Keep on doing what you are doing here, it works, it works miracles

Absolutely. You couldn't have sucked it out of my mind any better. This entire community is awesome. I donate to everyone whose code I use, and am quite happy to do so.
The Infuse is an awesome phone and my first smartphone too. It was indeed scary to to that first rooting...but it opened the door to lots and lots of other great experiences and trials with my phone.
Whatever my next phone is, I will be turning again toothed excellent folks here, and hopefully can give some code of the my own back someday.

Love the infuse. I would definitely still use that as my daily driver, but i am using a 4s just because it will not ever fail, like my phone on debloated stock gingerbread, stable as a rock. But it is on a heavily modified CM10 i made lol, still rocks. I was looking at a nexus 4, and played with the optimus G at Best Buy, and boy let me tell you, i could not slow the dang thing down! I was looking at the G, Note 2, and One X+ but something way better like the S4 will be out soon, and i might as well wait now until my contract is up in 4-5 months now.
To be honest, I have not heard one good thing about the N4 to date. Granted I haven't heard any really bad things, like the phone exploding in your hand the second you try to run it at 100%, but enough to sway me away from it.
Like you in a way, I came to these forums some time ago whilst working on what was one of my first smartphones, the HTC 8195 Wizard. Slider phone with full keyboard, halfway decent graphics, but sucky WM5.0 OS.
Next up was the HTC 8925 Kaiser, AKA "ATT Tilt", which ran WinMo 6.0 at best, but some pretty crafty and resourceful devs here on XDA ported Android to it, not just firmwares but kernels as well. L1q1D taught me a few things on kernel structure and memory mapping (really important on those phones), and the rest just seemed to fall into place; I was hooked.
The best I could do was try to port Honeycomb through use of "blind porting" from another HTC phone, but I couldn't get the kernel to fully come on line with the new memory structure, and all I could get was a really long bootloop and an almost non-functional homescreen.
Which brings me to the Infuse, which I aquired through the normal upgrade channels when contract came up. I got 2 of them, one for me, one for the now ex-girlfriend, who constantly bugs me to upgrade her phone since she's still on 2.2.1 Froyo.
Everyone here, devs and noobs, are always kind and willing to lend a kernel of knowledge, if it's something they know how to fix. If they can't fix it, they can point you to someone who can.
Lots of love and respect for everyone here on XDA, not just this forum.
There is a wealth of knowledge and information out there on just about any phone/smartphone available around the world. You can even step outside the bounds of your subscribed forum (this one) and find another phone using similar hardware, and maybe use some apps that also run on that device, even some "bloatware" from the manufacturer that you find useful, yet is not included in your favorite firmware.
Again, hate to lose another "Infuser" to the N4, but choice is choice... just don't drop it...ever.

I went the way of the N4 as well. I read many things about the phone that were bad, but after about two weeks of use I have nothing to complain about. I still use my infuse at home for browsing the internet and some games, I guess you could say my "phablet" because I can't make calls with it. I still browse these infuse forums daily! Don't think I could ever get rid of it.
