[Q] Daylight Savings Texting Issue? - General Topics

Is anyone else having this problem? When I send texts, they'll send with the correct time, but when I receive texts, they are an hour ahead. For example, if I sent a text to myself at 3:23am, I receive the text, but it says 4:23am. It's a little annoying since all of the sent messages get pushed back.
I'm running SyndicateROM EB13

Yes, I have the same rom and issue. when i look at the date/time settings on the phone it says i'm now "gmt -5, Central Daylight Time" i'm suspecting this is the issue since the carrier is setting my time but the phone is time stamping the text messages? its a theory in progress, i could be way off.
UPDATE: nevermind... i do this for a living and forgot rule #1. Did a hard reboot of the phone and all is well now.

Do you have your phone clock set to automatic by carrier? If you manually set it differently than the carrier's automatic time the texts will get screwed up.
I tried setting my clock 5 min fast but all of my texts would compile after the recipient and it would make a big mess.

Incorrect SMS Received Timestamps on Captivate.

Hi all,
I have an unlocked Captivate running on the Rogers network here in Canada. Whenever I receive a text message it is timestamped for 3 hours earlier. If I receive a text at 8pm, it would show up as received at 5pm.
I have called Rogers and gotten them to reset me on the network. The problem still persists however. I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem as well. If so, are there any potential fixes?
Thanks.

Is this consistent for all messages? How about MMS? I can tell you that the network will have little to do with it. The time stamp comes from your phone when it receives the message. There is no time stamp in the message payload itself. Check your time and date settings specifically time zone. Try changing it manually. Test it and then set it back to update from the network.
Thank you for the reply.
Yes it is consistent with all messages. I tried using chompSMS and on the message menu it shows the correct timestamp of when the message was received. However, when I click into the individual conversations, it shows the incorrect timestamp.
I have tried to set the timezone to Pacific (I'm in Vancouver) and then back to update from network but that still doesn't work.
Any help at all would be awesome.
Thanks.

Odd. My guess is the network is setting it in a way your phone doesn't like. I would suggest this:
Set the time and timezone manually.
Clear all your current text conversations.
Reboot.
Get someone to send you some texts.

I'm from Vancouver Island running an unlocked Captivate on Rogers, I calculated the difference between my time and the incoming timestamp and adjusted my time zone setting (GMT -3.00 worked for me). It's something to do with Rogers network, I had the same issue with my N900. Works fine now.
Download a program called smsfixtimes from market
Google the program to see lots of other people with same problem.
You can also use a messaging program called Handscent. It relies on when text was received, rather than the timestamp.
Yup, the guy above me is pretty much right. If you want to keep using the samsung messaging app that came with the phone, get the sms timefix from the market. I'm also in Vancouver using the Captivate (on fido). The problem I had with that is that when I would get a text right after I sent one (say at 5:25pm), if a friend sent me a text back within a minute of me sending the text, it would show up before my text in the thread.
That's why I gave up on that and went over to handscent sms.

SMS sorting

I am not sure if I am the only one, but noticed a slight problem regarding to SMS display.
It's regarding the sender's and mine timestamp. Not sure why, but SMS's I recieved from a friend who was responding to my SMS got timestamp lower than my original SMS. I would understand if it would be some seconds, but the difference there was ~2 minutes. So basically his reply to my sent message was put above my message. Seemed like it would be sorting the messages according to sent time from my friend's telephone
Anybody else noticed such glitch? Any workaround ?
It's a known issue for some people. It's a problem with the timestamps on the messages themself but can sometimes be remedied by altering you phone's time. Do you have the date and time settings as "automatic" or are they manually configured by you?
am on automatic. And I don't really see a point of going away from ntp syncing. Is it possible to mark incomming SMS's with current timestamp of MY phone ?

Nexus 5 Not Sending/Receiving MMS

Hey guys,
So I just got my Nexus 5 about a week ago, and love it so far. I immediately downloaded 8sms because it seems like Hangouts is still a work in progress.. Anyway, for some reason my phone will not auto-retrieve MMS messages. I've tried changing the MMSC values within the app and restarting it, but it hasn't helped.
I usually keep Mobile Data set to off, as I'm usually at school/work and both have secure WiFi.
My old HTC Desire HD was able to automatically turn data on momentarily to receive MMS, then shut off. This was a stock feature of the phone. Is this not the case with the Nexus 5? I don't want to have to go and turn on mobile data every time a MMS notification pops up; it just seems stupid to have to.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!
Turn mobile data on!

I guess it is a good thing to have but if every app could turn on data when they wanted and download anything then it would defeat the point of having data off. I agree with you though that in that situation it should automatically download.
With that said, some custom ROMs have this feature but it's not included in stock Android. When data is manually disabled by the user i'd expect it to stay off however for anything.
Does the automatically download mms feature not let the data turn on to download the message?

The problem is, I've tried just running around with mobile data on, and wifi on, but it still will not download the MMS messages. I have to manually turn off wifi, and then it will switch to data and download the MMS...
Try smart messenger or textra or Hangouts it could be a issue with the texting app

I might try going to my carrier to see if there's a solution. It seems silly that a 3 year old smartphone (my old HTC) had the ability to automatically turn on/off data for MMS, but not the Nexus..
Go to your T-mobile account find where you would select a phone and choose the Nexus 5. Wait a little and restart your phone and see if it works after an hour or 2.

Were you able to find a fix to this? My texts were completely fine for the first day or two I had it while i was on wifi. But just realized today that i might of been missing out on a day or twos worth of texts when my friend asked me why i didnt respond. So i turned off my wifi and i recieved alot of texts at once.
Im currently using the default hangouts app so im not sure whats causing this.. looks like i have to turn off wifi to get and send texts.
I also have this demand. My old HTC phone(Incredible S, flashed with CM rom) was able to automatically turn data on momentarily to receive MMS, then shut off. I haven't change the carrier. So, it's the 4.4 problem
Still no fix for this. I also noticed that if a MMS message is to be received, but mobile data on the N5 is off, 8sms will constantly try to fetch it, unsuccessfully... This causes a notable battery drain and even had 8sms as the top battery usage when checking battery stats. I guess in a way, it's a way to see if you have an MMS message incoming, but still... Really wish data would just auto on/off when the device detected a MMS incoming/outgoing.

I also use 8SMS. I don't know if this will solve your problem, but basically, the problem I had, was that if I were to send a text that was over 160 characters, the old messaging app on my S3, would automatically convert it to an MMS (which I think most phones do). For some reason, this was disabled in 8SMS.
The way to fix that, is to go into 8SMS settings, and find the option that says "Convert long sms to mms" and switch it to "1".
This worked for me, I had a slightly different problem then you are describing, but perhaps this could be a fix for you as well?
I hope that helps, if not, well, maybe it'll help someone else!
I use CM and the option to enable data to download MMS is not included yet. However i have no problem downloading MMS while connected to 3G. As long as your APN has MMS in the APN Types field it should automatically use that connection instead to get MMS.
I didn't have this issue on stock either (4.4) so maybe it's a carrier thing?
for me the problem is when I'm connected to a WiFi network the phone automatically turns off wifi to download the message and then never re-enables wifi turn it back on I understand that MMS must be downloaded through the carrier network but if I remember correctly it wasn't until recently that I wasn't able to have wifi and download message at the same time.
Nexus 5 Android 4.4.4, Tmobile: when at home my cellular has 1 bar (LTE). If wifi is connected, outgoing MMS does not succeed. I get notifications for incoming MMS, but it asks to "download" the message which fails. The moment I disconnect wifi in the same spot (literally without moving), MMS resumes working both for incoming and outgoing communications. Connecting wifi again causes it to fail.
I do remember a time that the phone was able to enable both connections at the same time to download an MMS and then subsequently keep everything else that I do on the phone through the wifi network.
The only thing I don't know for sure is whether it is a third party messenger problem for a phone problem carrier problem orAndroid bug
I also just realized that I bumped a very old post my apologies if I did not read enough to find a solution amongst other threads.
But any help would be great

Some problems with Hangouts. Can anyone help?

I'm currently running Google Hangouts 2.1 for SMS. I've been having some problems since updating.
The main annoyance is that I can not change the SMS received notification sound from "Hangouts Message". Doing so in the Settings > SMS results in it just switching to silent (no ringtone). This happens no matter what ringtone I make it, and once I do this it wont change from "silent" unless I delete all data for Hangouts in the App Manager.
The other annoyance is that MMS takes FOREVER to send. 3-4 minutes every time, regardless of signal strength. It eventually goes through, but it always fails, says "Retrying" for a minute or so, then finishes sending. Anyone else struggling with this?
Does anyone here have a fix for either problem?
Anyone not able to get your hangouts and sms to merge? I have the option turned on.

This is one of the reason why am not using Hangout. Try other applications that will work fine for you.

Texting problems

My one m8 is not rooted or modded in any way and I am having texting troubles. It doesn't matter what app I am in, sms texts take about two minutes to send and I sometimes receive duplicate texts from whoever I am texting. I have 4g with three bars and I dont know what the problem is. I can temporarily fix it by restarting my phone but after a couple minutes it goes back to normal. I have tried using hangouts, the htc default messaging app and verizon message and they all have the same problem.

Not sure whether this is the same thing, but my recipients are complaining about getting two of every text message from me. It doesn't matter whether I let Hangouts take over SMS or not. I've disabled the Verizon messaging app; I'm thinking of deleting it altogether. Wondering whether this is an artefact of the Sprint messaging app that is flashed with the extreme powersaver mode zip file.
First off sorry for bringing up this old thread but didnt see the sense in starting a new one.
Just wanted to add that recipients of my texts seem to pretty frequently receive duplicates. For awhile I was using Handcent but completely removed that and am using the stock messaging app with the same results in both. I have not flashed to extreme power saving mode referenced above as a possible culprit.
So with that said just curious if anyone else is experiencing this or has any possible solutions? I hate calling verizon but I may give them a call this week on it if I dont get any responses here and see what they say.
Bump. I came here to post a thread on the exact same problem. My texts almost never go through. I've googled it extensively but can't find a solution.

I know this is an old thread and I hate bumping something so old.. but as no one had posted a fix in here (and I'm sick of seeing failed to send messages in my sms app) I know of one workaround that has worked for me. In the default (messages) app, if you go into settings for sms and mms and change priority to High sms and mms work much better. I no longer see failed to send messages and they send in a few seconds rather than 30-60. The only problem is, within that same app, you see a red exclamation point next to every message you send. It's an eye sore but it's the only fix I've seen. I've had this issue on every sms app I've tried and just about every rom including stock. Hope this helps someone...
Edit: I tried finding that exclamation to just delete it from the message.apk but it's pulling it from somewhere else it seems. If anyone happens to know off hand please let me know. I'm going to keep looking for that icon to remove it. I wish this want an issue. It's these little things that drive me crazy.
Edit 2: I found it in the htc framework. com.htc.resources.apk for anyone interested. I'm removing that icon from my phone now... Hopefully it all works smoothly.
