I guess it depends on what you mean connect to computer. If you are talking about using your phone to get on the internet with your computer, You can use wireless AP ap that is built into the phone. go to Settings/wireless and network/Mobile AP, check the box that says Mobile AP and say Yes to the popup box. You will have to go into Mobile AP settings if you want to secure your network and setup a pass phrase. You can also use USB Tethering if you want to use internet through the USB cable. Other than that you may want to go into Settings/Applications/Development and check USD debugging if you are having trouble connecting.

Cingular says I cant use my 8525 as a modem- Is that true or BS?

I find it hard to believe the 8525 cant be used as a modem. I have a laptop and want to use my 8525 as a modem since I dont have a wireless aircard. I called Cingular and they said the 8525 has software issues that doesnt allow it to be a modem. Is this true? If it is false, what do i need to do to make it work as a modem? Ive searched the forums here and didnt find anything.
Thanks

The 8525 User Manual tells you how to do it.
the way the manual says doesnt work. Was on with tech support 4 hours last night going thru the manual.
Oh,
You might have a unique issue.
Mine works great! (I do the usb connection)
Bluetooth to a MacBook here on a TyTN with Cingular... works flawlessly and fast!

yes, please share.
My particular problem is that my computer is not recognzing my phone. When I go into properties it just has a yellow question mark and doesnt recognize it as a modem.
No special knowledge here.
Just followed the directions in the user manual.
How about when you guys are in the 'wireless modem' app,
are you choosing 'menu' and then 'start'?

OK, on my phone i activated the modem, then plugged it in via usb, after i did that then i get the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard". i then chose "Install from list or specific location" and click next. Then i checked the box for "Search Removable media" **ONLY** and clicked next. Then you get a pop up, choose continue anyway. after its done you will get a pop up stating it successfully installed HTC USB Modem. THen it will install a few other things but no more pop ups. voila all is done...

I just did that, says it found new hardware, then bam, nothing. Cant find it either anywhere. I click on that window, to search, and it finds nothing.
I clipped this from the User Manual:
"To add your device as a USB modem to your computer
1. After you tap Menu > Start on the Wireless Modem screen of your device, your computer will automatically detect that your device has been connected. The Found New Hardware dialog box will then appear on your computer.
2. In the Found New Hardware dialog box, select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next.
3. Select Search for the best drivers in these locations.
4. Insert the Getting Started Disc into your CD drive. Select the Include this location in the search check box. Click Browse and choose the CD drive and root folder where the modem driver is located, then click Next.
5. Wait for the installation to complete, then click Finish."
If after you do as shogunmark says, you computer still does'nt recognize it,
Then it may have already installed itself w/ the wrong drivers.
Go to 'Device Manager' and see if the device is listed.

the tether function is "on" on the phone, but my comp doesn't recognize the connection in the network settings.
sucks as i'm trying this on a fresh XP os installed notebook. so i don't know what could be causing this... (yess all updates have been updated)...

no problemo
This definitely isn't working with Windows XP.
This worked fine with my Nexus One. I had to install tetherxp.inf for it to work.
With the Nexus S, I removed all devices, uninstalled the drivers and started from scratch. No go with either the tetherxp.inf file or the RAR file posted earlier in this thread.
I can't find any other documentation on the Net that shows that Nexus S can tether with Windows XP.
Has anyone gotten this to work?
try this...
go to the PDAnet website http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php download their software onto your computer(free), then follow the directions on the screen. it will install the latest drivers onto your computer. i had to do that with my work computer too.
Well, I did that and now I just have a copy of PDSNet on my machine
I still can't get XP to recognize my Nexus S. When I plug it in I still get the New Hardware box that asks to find software for USB Device.
What I did was to add entries to tetherxp.inf for Nexus S which matched the signatures in device manager after I connected my phone to xp and turned on usb tether. I then installed the driver from tetherxp.inf.
Bazinga.

There are some weird small bugs with this phone when you use debugging mode or change settings during debugging mode. First make sure your device is not set to debugging mode. Try setting USB to mass storage while debugging mode is on, then turn debug off, then turn the phone off and back on. Things like that... Mine did the same thing for a day but this was the deal. Lots of root necessary apps require the use of debug mode and it can scew with your settings.

also, which version of Windows are you running? (i assume you're in Windows). i think maybe people have had more trouble with Windows 8? i haven't had any issues with 7, the drivers auto-install when i plug the device in.

[Q] phone not recognized as storage when connected to laptop

HI all, I seem to have a problem getting my laptop (ubuntu 12.04) to recognize my phone as storage when connected via USB. Here's what happened. I have already enabled USB debugging and USB debugging notify. When I plugged the phone to my laptop I got the usual message on the screen of my phone an when I clicked on it there were 2 tick boxes: one to recognize the phone as camera (that by the way worked) and the other one that recognized the phone as storage: when ticked nothing happened on my laptop, so I unticked both and now that bloody message is not coming up anymore on my phone, I only got one which says "USB debugging connected". ANy idea?
thanks
Disable the USB debugging... It's not needed for storage connection.
Sent from my One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
HI thanks, ok fair enough but somehow I seem to have messed up with it and I would like to fix it if I can: I can't get the usb debugging mode message up when I connect the phone and the laptop doesn't recognize it as storage, not only ubuntu but even windows! could it be a matter of drivers? If so where can I get them from?
thanks

Thanks. When I connect the device as PTP it gets connected but when I do it as MTP , computer shows the error that drivers are not installed.
I'm having a similar problem on my phone, there is no option to change USB computer connection, so phone not regonised when plugged into PC? Any ideas?
MTP is a proprietary and modern protocol, older or open source OS's will not support it out of the box. You will need the relevant drivers, not sure how to do it on older version of Ubuntu, may be worth looking in their forums (support is included in new version in the proprietary driver bundle). There are no drivers for Windows XP, but you can get them for Windows 7, I'll dig out the guide I have bookmarked somewhere.

Oh yeah the other thing I didn't mention is MTP honors your phones security, so if you have a secure lock it won't show up initially until screen is on and device is unlocked.

Hi, boringfrog,
were you able to get the issue resolved ?
After the phone upgraded from 12.0-YNG1TAS17L to 12.0-YNG1TAS2I3, i am seeing the similar issue, my phone will only charge on a Laptop, i tried different cables, 2 laptops, uninstalled and re-installed drivers, nothing works, i did a dirty flash back to 12.0-YNG1TAS17L the issue still exists, i tried enabling and disabling ADB debugging etc...
Under storage options , under the three dots on the right i see the USB computer connection, upon hitting it , nothing happens, the storage page just refreshes... no options to mount as MTP....
Please help need to copy the data from phone to PC...

Sorry it was a friends phone so I just returned it to him after try a few attempts. Can you not put your data into the cloud then you can access it on your PC? Good luck.
PC not recognizing OnePlus 2 after update to Oxigen 3.0.1
What seems to solve the problem is to pull down the notifications bar, which shows one notification which gives you multiple options for the USB. Please choose the file download option(usually the second option). Your OPT will show up on the PC.
Thanks and regards to all.

USB Connection Issues

I just rooted my s8+ with partcyborg's samfail and everything is working great except the usb isn't being recognized. I can see my phone on my computer and I can move files to my desktop but on my phone I get this message - "The connected device is unable to access data on this device. Reconnect the USB cable and try again." I have USB debugging enabled in settings. I'm using windows 10. ADB is up to date. I installed the samsung USB drivers. The device isn't recognized in kies or smart switch.
I'm at a total loss here. Any ideas? Could this be related to the 80% battery bug I was seeing? It's been at 80% for a while now.
Apologies if this is an obvious fix. I haven't rooted a phone since kitkat I looked around but the other threads weren't helpful.

So what do you wanna do with your USB connection? Just MTP (e.g. transfer files like you would when connecting a USB-Stick to PC) or you wanna do some ADB operations?
If you just want to transfer files, there's no need to have USB-Debugging enabled (in fact this is kind of a security risk when you connect to an unknown pc)
