Captivate vs iPhone

So I got my captivate a few months ago, coming from the iPhone 3G & 3Gs(both great phones) and although I dragged my feet making the transition, I can honestly say I'm happy with my decision to get the Captivate as apposed to the iPhone 4. Here's why:
The iPhone is a great phone. Nobody can argue that. It has the best music player, best web browser, smoothest UI, best design, etc.
IMHO no other phone will be as good as the iPhone out of the box.
But when it comes to phones and technology, put simply, I'm a tweaker. I like to **** with things, experiment, add personal touches, etc,. In short, the iPhone doesn't really let you do that. The iPhone is the iPhone and the Captivate is more like a mini computer.
The iPhone "just works", there's nothing to **** with, and to me that takes all the fun out of it
I'd rather have a phone that "I" make work the way I want it to, rather than a phone that "Apple" makes work the way THEY want it to.
When it comes down to it I think it just depends on what kind of tech junky you are and what your use of the phone is going to entail.
For me, I'm gonna enjoy tweaking out on my phone for the next 2 years

Couldn't agree more

i actually considered selling my captivate and going to a 3gs or I4 largely due to the GPS issues with the device (wifes i4 GPS works flawlessly with mapquest).
I had also considered it because i recently sold my ipod classic and had considered getting a touch but if i could do a 32gb i4 and have one device cover my phone and mp3 needs why not. (captivate isn't horrible as an mp3 player but i would miss the ability to 1. control through car stereo via ipod dedicated input 2. The enhanced sound quality of using such input.
Fortunately with my wife having one everytime i had the notion i could play with hers
mp3 playing great.......games great........web device great
But the biggest missing component from IOS is a competent notification system (lack of notifcation bar, would definitely miss the convenience of the dropdown notification bar as well as being able to place information, widgets & shortcuts on the lockscreen, and lack of mobile AP (i think the latter can be remedied via jailbreak).
As much as i like to tinker and customize i could honestly live with the app grid and lack of widgets if the iphone had a more competent and convenient notification system for managing missed calls, texts, emails etc. (I don't know if anyone has played with one but the screen that comes up when multi-tasking seems like it would have been ideal for delivery and management of such notifications. When you go into multi-task/app switching in IOS (via push the button twice quickly it then displays running apps and recent apps in the very bottom row of screen. The top 95% of screen is unused and imo wasted potential to house the notifications.

i returned my captivate cuz of battery life and gps issues and picked up the iphone 4 which i currently have now. while the gps is flawless, the battery is about the same or worse while in use. On the other hand battery lasts considerably longer when the iphones screen is off compared to the captivates battery with the screen off. (good for listening to music and audio books).
The stock ios is garbage compared to android. i had to jailbreak it and then work for hours searching for repositories and tutorials on what i can do to personalize and force the phone to have some cool features. You really take silly things like moving icons where you want them and having widgets for granted while you are on android. I miss how easy it was to access information etc. it is possible on the jailbroken ios, but the pickings are extremely thin and the few available are glitchy and leave alot to be desired.
The shoddy multitasking combined with one hard button is another pain in the ass. Multitasking in ios usually means actually closing the program and then having a quick link available to u when you want to open it again.
I am pleased that there are more high quality apps available on this iphone 4. Android is not that far behind though and i can tell that app dev for the ip has slowed. Considering the sheer mass of apps available for the ios i would expect more apps designed for the ip4 to be available. Only a very small fraction of the apps utilize the ip4's retina display. Also, when i check the jailbroken repo's for new homebrew apps, development seems to be stagnating.
I've only written about the things that are important to me. Some of my complaints about the iphone can be explained away as i'm sure some people will try to do. However, my opinions stand, there is much left to be desired.
My suggestion is to find an android phone with working gps and decent battery. Or test out a new windows mobile phone. I can't say i'd recommend the iphone to someone. If you need to replace your captivate soon, i'd suggest asking for your money back because they cant deliver on gps promises, ask for a full refund. Save you're upgrade and wait for a new wave of android phones to hit att.

I had poor battery performance and abysmal GPS at first. After conditioning the battery properly by running from full to 10% a couple of times, the performance improves significantly, and now it blows my old iPhone 3GS away in battery performance. Also, the GPS issue for me has been resolved by using Assonance ROM. I get a solid lock within about 10 seconds outside, and about 30 inside, and it holds even while I drive.
All that aside, if you just want to pick it up and have it work, but don't care to 'make it your own' then iPhone is right for you. The bottom line is whether you are happy with what you have.

My experience has been that most of my friends with iPhones that absolutely love them did not own a smartphone previously and the few that did aren't as pleased with their iPhones as they thought they'd be. Then there are the ones that just refuse to admit that an Apple product isn't as good as they want you to believe.

i have to believe this. idk who would deem most of this stuff as godly unless they havn't tried android at all.
as for what the other guy said about conditioning and gps fix, i did everything known to man to make that battery last, but i still am not satisfied with battery life in the captivate or the iphone 4. battery technology needs to catch up. Gps wise, i was really looking for a gps that could track my run's and give me distances etc. i tried roms and all the gps fix suggestions from xda but it still rarely gave me accuracy close than 10-20 meters and bounced from house to house while i was goin through my neighborhood. at least the iphone4 got one thing right.

good call. I guess it would get easier with more use but i also don't like the 1 button method either. The multiple buttons on the captivate makes web browsing and multi-tasking a better experience imo

Ive had both. The reason i dont want the iphone anymore is the ridiculous cost to replace.I picked up both of my captivates for cheap. Overall i love my captivate...the only reason i will get rid of it soon is the gps. I also have a htc aria. If it had a bigger screen i would prefer it over my captivate. Its very fast and the gps is dead on.

I have had both also. It took several months for me to get used to the captivate. I use yahoo email and the iphone is better for yahoo email than android. This was almost a game stopper until I learned how to use gmail to basically look just like my yahoo box after forwarding my emails to gmail. The gps is still an issue but not as much since I carry a blackberry bold 9700 for work and the gps locks to 3 meters in about 20 seconds.
Once rooted and lag fixed, the captivate is pretty awesome! The screen is to hard to give up on. I think 4 inches is the sweet spot for phone screens. When I look at the screen on the iphone it looks so much smaller than before.

Anybody move from iPhone 4 to inspire?

So I've had my iPhone 4 since release and I've been happy with it but itching for AT&T to get a decent android phone for me to try. I'm eligible for partial upgrade and because I'm on premiere I get an additional 10% off; which the Corp store agreed to honor; so total price was $269. Luckily they were busy when I got there and I had some time to play with it. Very solid phone. But I've been debating the whole front facing camera thing. I Skype regularly with my parents who are overseas and I FaceTime with my wife (more once our baby is born in April. SO the lack of a front facing camera was big. I've also heard horror stories of android and battery life; so when I found it it was only 1250mah I couldn't believe it. And after playing around with it I realized that the browser is not on the same level as the iphones. I watch a lot of videos on CNN and when I tried it using the flash Player on android it took a long time. On the iPhone the HTML 5 page pulls up and videos are near instantaneous. The browser just seemed a lot more fluid. I dunno I haven't made a final decision but wanted to see somebody doses perspective who went from iphone4 to inspire

I sold my iPhone for $ 500 and never looked back. I picked up the inspire this morning and after an hour of frustrating debacle with the radio Shack guy I got to playing with it.
I had owned an evo before but this blows it out of the water. If you can get by the fact that it doesn't have a front facing camera you will be pleased. The phone is super fast and the display is beautiful. I'm working on my first charge and the battery is lasting. I do not miss my iPhone at all.

Cool. Let me know In a few days after you've been using it for a while. The other very annoying thing (and this is the iPhones fault) is that the damn iPhone uses a micro sim. So i can't just switch back and forth between the two. I'll probably have to pick up a micro sim adapter that would allow it to be used sit regular sim slots

I sold my iphone and I am very happy with my phone. So nice not needing itunes and being able to use the storage in my phone. Its also nice being able to add ringtones and sounds so easily. IMHO the inspire screen is just as good.

@OP: That's what I hear too, also have seen, that the experience on iOS is just a little smoother than the Android experience, and I can understand where they are coming from.

I sold my i4 last night and bought my inspire today. My advice to you is get an ipod touch 4gen for your face time. That us my plan as I live apple for their audio. If Android made a device similar to the touch than I would still have my iPhone but that's not the case. Plus this phone is solid and not cheap like others. Doesn't feel like I've skipped a beat. Good luck. Also my speck case makes a difference because that's why I loved iPhone were the accessories.

I just got rid of my iP4 for the Inspire and I'm not gonna miss it. I've had a ton of phones in the last year and this might be my favorite. The speaker is a little weak, but I'm used to that from HTC. Screen is brilliant and while it may not be the retina display I prefer the larger size.
I haven't had a chance to evaluate battery life yet of course, but I pretty much know what I'm getting there.

I charged mine fully and have been playing with it for a while now. The battery has gone down only a tad - in no way can you literally 'watch the battery drain'. I think this will only improve with root. And the screen seriously is just as impressive as the retina display. It's really tough to see pixels on this thing - everything is bright, sharp and clear.

this will be my situation. i am brand new to this forum, so forgive me lol.
My first smartphone was the G1, loved it but decided to switch to iPhone 3g.
Sold that to by Nexus One. Loved it as well, but sold it to get the i4.
Now, i'm selling my i4 to get the inspire. So it's not my first Android, but I've become sorely accustomed to the "stupid" nature of iOS. Returning to android will take some getting used to.

I am trying this android thing out. Came from iphone 4 but still debating. I may return it because of battery issues and also music management sucks. Cant manage playlists. Also, bluetooth control does not work on the included player.

I won't be using this for music except for slacker and pandora, and will stick my iphone4 in the glovebox and listen to the ipod while in the car. Have a small ipod if I ever need to take one somewhere.

The only difference is that you can see the touchscreen grid on the inspire, but not on the iphone.

Not exactly sure what you are referring to regarding managing playlists but I use isyncr and it works perfectly for me. With the wifi addon you can sync them over your home network as well.

The main problem so far is battery life and bluetooth music controls. It will not let me pause, change tracks, etc. Any work around for this? I am a bit new to android and do like the inspire.

I use MixZing Basic for music, works perfectly with playlist.
I like this phone a lot. The only concern I have is call freezing. I had a G1 before, it freezes a lot when answering a call. It forced me to switch to IPhone 4. I hope this one doesn't have the freezing issue so I can sell my IPhone 4 on ebay, haha

Thats good; keep in mind though that you're using a new phone and the battery life will get worse the more apps you download, the more widgets you have, and as you add more screens and files to the phone.
You should definitely take advantage of rooting wnd trying to find a ROM that has undervolting and over/under clocking to get the most out of the battery.

I have used my stereo Bluetooth headset and I can pause and skip tracks. I'm using stock player.

Coming from a Captivate to Inspire

So I picked up my Inspire this morning. Here are my initial thoughts coming from a Captivate with a custom ROM (where everything, including GPS works perfectly).
Screen: better contrast and brighter colors on the Captivate. screen size doesn't make that much difference.
Weight: Inpire is HEAVY compared to the Captivate. And bulkier.
Speed: Inspire is faster. Loading maps and Earth for example
Apps and Widgets: in most cases, Inspire wins hands down. Email and contacts are so much better IMHO
Camera: Captivate takes better pictures and has anti-shake. Inspire has better post production enhancements which makes final picture better on the Inspire.
Video: Captivate wins hands down. Was a replacement for my regular camera. Inspire is choppy, especially if you are moving. HTC doesn't have thus right yet.
Video player / playback: interesting one this one. Stock video player app better on the Captivate (much). But using 3rd party, like Rockplayer, is much better on Inpsire. Still nothing as good as Core on my HD2, but that's another story! Should be better than it is on Inspire.
Typing: both are excellent. I typed this on the Inspire landscape and its been a while since I didn't feel fear at typing something so long on a screen.
Sound: Captivate wins hands down. Inspire is a major disappointment after the Captivate, for both in call and speakerphone. HTC still needs to fix this.
Data: no question Inspire is faster where I live (NY).
Boot speed: same. Slow.
Battery life: too early to say. I had a custom ROM which meant 3 batteries a s day on the Captivate.
Battery door: WHAT THE FU## WAS HTC THINKING? Inspire is a disaster. Feels like I will break it every time I open the door (and with that small battery its inevitable that I will need to do so). No way you could change that on the move. Madness.
Overall: Inspire is a better overall experience. Since the day I got the Captivate I have tried to make it have the look and feel of HTC Sense! But I will miss weight, screen brightness, camera, video and sound of Captivate.

Over all, I agree. The battery is not much of a concern to me ad I charge at my desk at work and have a car charger, though. Same goes for sound. I am either in my office or our datacenter. In my office, I can hear the vibration in my pocket of my jacket sitting on my coat rack. In the datacenter, I hear nothing but three hundred servers and large san arrays.
Those are really the only areas we differ.

I also switched from the Inspire. I've only had it for a day, and I already feel that it was worth every penny to make the switch.

@OP Thanks for putting this up. I'd like to hear from more people who jumped to Inspire from the Captivate!
On a side note... would you rather be inspired? Or captivated? Seriously, these phones are getting some epic naming schemes! Oh wait...

I want to add that this is the first time in a while that I feel satisfied with a device out of the box.
I don't feel i need to tinker with anything...
OK that parts not true really, is it! I HAVE to root it so I can sideload, remove bloatware and tether for free. etc. here we go again...

i think I would rather be DESIRED!

I'm thinking very seriously about calling AT&T and asking them to switch me to the Inspire. I've had 2 different captivates and this one has random shut downs and a crap GPS, just like my first one.

Hi folks. After having 2 Captivates and both of them being buggy, I decided, hey I'm still within the 30 day return policy with Costco, why not? Plus I heard from many disgruntled folks about how Samsung is hard to deal with. So, I went and got the Inspire and its like night and day! The display, the calender, the email, not to mention the boot up times and speed are all above par compared to the Captivate...I'm very happy with it. Now to find a case!

Well I am coming back from one day on the dark side...
On a whim yesterday I went to AT&T store and picked up an Inspire. Tonight after work I will be taking it back.
The big deal breaker for me was that it doesn't support BT voice dialing, to my knowledge none of the HTC droid phones do??. The "enhancement" has been hanging out there for a year or better and it's not fixed. I tried the stock voice dialer, and ones from multiple other sources but it just wouldn't kick off the VD from any BT device.
You can root the Inspire (read downgrade ROM and root), but then have to install a diff ROM (the only one for now) since the root process breaks the sound and the source I'd bet will be a few months behind so you can't yet "play" with it like you can the captivate. Big thanks to attn1 though for the work he's done to progress it as far as it is, ON LAUNCH DAY.
All in all I agree with the OPs opinions and findings above and it's not a bad device. That being said I have been able to overcome most if not all of the issues with the captivate since there is SO MUCH development being done around it. I've had/have 3 of them. Sent one back for sleep death, have two now, one as daily driver and one as a dev phone and neither of them have any real issues.
A lot of people have had issues with the captivate I know but for me it's a decent device and is a lot more mature for someone that wants to have a toy as well as a phone, and the captivate just "feels" better to me. Not feels better in my hands... but the whole experience is just better for me.

I would say give devs a chance on this phone, it is still brand new. I remember the early days of Captivate development, there was a whole bunch of nuthin'.
As for BT voice dial, I have heard good things about Vlingo in car. Give it a shot, at least.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I know things will progress with the device and it won't be long before there will be ROMS, Kernels etc. I just learned my lesson of not getting a device too soon.
I actually tried Vlingo and Choice Dialer... IMO they were horrible compared to the voice dialer on the captivate and they also didn't work with my BT in my truck. I have a BlueStar 2010 in my truck and it works great with the captivate to initiate calls from the OnStar buttons and use it purely via voice. I couldn't get it to work with the Inspire unless I physically touched the phone first, which is the point of my whole setup. I can simply get in the truck and make or receive calls without ever touching the phone. It's no reason whatsoever for anyone else to shy away from the phone, that's just a deal breaker for me.

Huge upgrade. Much better battery life + gps. And sense is so much better.

Gotcha, I know what that feeling is like. I went the the BB Bold 9700 from the 3GS. I hated it overall. Wound up going back to the iPhone.
Which is really sad for the BES administrator...

I just got back from the corp store with my Inspire!!!
Now to figure out the best way to sell my craptivate.....

I want to see some nice side by side photos of the Captivate vs. Inspire... Front, side view, back, etc etc

All you guys switching from the Captivate, how much are you paying? I talked with AT&T this morning and they said I would have to wait until April and then I could get the Inspire for 99 dollars plus a 75 dollar equipment fee.
I got the Inspire for my wife and I want it for myself ...... So if there is something I can do to get it faster, that would be great.

I just became elegible to upgrade my phone, I keep hearing things that vz is gonna switch to tiered pricing and would prefer to get locked in before they change things. Really split between those 3 choices, get a charge with it's amazing amoled screen thats larger and customization of android, or go with iphone 4 with it's higher pixel density, built quality and pretty good camera detail, I can always wait for the apple event on the june 6th-10th and risk being closer to tiered pricing.
I looked at dx 2 but I just couldn't get into the whole pentile screen, it just wasn't right for my taste even with a higher resolution.

Get the charge. You can always sell it on craigslist for an iphone 4. Besides iphone sucks lol

I've used every single iPhone every year since Apple initially release it. It wasn't until last summer (2010) that I got on Android. At first I didn't like it; i thought it was pretty complicated, confusing, and too frustrating to use. I didn't like Android 1.8 that was pushed onto the HTC Hero as well. So I went back to iPhone. A week later, I got the HTC Evo 4G. I started to like Android a bit more, but still used iPhone 4 as my "daily beater," if you know what i mean.
Long story short, I LOVE android now. I never want to use another POS iOS software device again. Android is the way to go, buddy.

Question: If you buy the Charge on contract, and let's say in 6 months you want something else, you can't sell it because it's ESN will still be tied to your account till the contract is up, correct?

It's tied to your account until you want to change it, but it requires little to no effort. You can either change either online through the verizonwireless.com portal or by calling customer service.
Once you have changed the ESN/IMEI tied to your account to your new phone, you can do whatever you want with the old phone as it is no longer tied to your account.

There is absolutely no comparison between these two phones. The charge does everything better except iTunes and battery life. Faster phone and way faster network = no comparison.

Well, out of the box, the Charge lags quite a bit. In fact, it's almost to the point where it is unbearable. But the Debloated ED2 solved that problem. There is ZERO lag now.

Android is a hobby, not just a phone, and once you start playing with it, you'll be hooked. iPhone is pretty much a phone for simpletons who just want a smartphone.
The Charge is similar to the iPhone in some minute ways, probably the closest thing to an iPhone on the Android OS. Im trying to sell my iPhone for Verizon now because I just like Android better.

im considering going back to my iphone 4, switching back n forth between the charge and thunderbolt right now .... as someone said, there can be quite a bit of lag with the charge, try adding a widget to your homescreen, takes a really long time to load the menu of choices ... i actually like using the tb more than the charge but can't read the screen very well in sunlight, so i use the charge more...
as for the iphone 4, most of the apps are done better than the android version, no idea why but that's the way it looks to me.... a minus for the iphone 4 is lack of voice integration, sometimes i'm too lazy to type a txt msg, so i just speak it when i'm using an android phone... it can be done on iphone 4 but you have to use 2 programs, just a pain in the ass ...
also, i don't have great eyesight anymore so it's hard to read the fonts on the iphone 4 at times, on my charge i've installed bigger system fonts so i can read pretty much everything without wearing glasses
oh yeah, games run better on iphone 4 than the charge... could be because of the smaller screen on the iphone, angry birds seasons can really lag on my charge..
another plus for android is the 'integration' of things like pics... there is an option to share with many different social networks, email, txt, etc... can be done on the iphone but usually have to use a different program....
all in all, it's a tough choice.... the iphone is really easy to use, has some great apps, and is stable for the most part..
the charge has a really nice screen, not the resolution of the iphone, but still looks great ...

Yea, what everyone else said in comparison between iPhone and Android OS/Charge is spot on.
If you're not ready to settle for a Charge and a bit unwilling to go back to iPhone/iOS, then you can definitely wait for the SGS2. I picked one up from the grey market (expansys) and I am loving it. Definitely one of the best phones i've ever used.

I would love to get a galaxy 2 but I don't think its even mentioned to coming to vz, I would prefer to stay with vz, been with them for years and am content with the service.
It's like having to choose from vanilla and chocolate but preferring strawberry.
Only concern with going with iphone is I might get renewed in a 3g data and not be allowed to switch to a 4g device without going for the new tiered pricing if thats what they have if I want to sell and change the phone. There's also low quality on youtube video unless I go wifi and it would be more complicated getting my own ringtones in it. Then again the iphone 4 is well built, reliable and stupid proof. Might be harder to unbrick an iphone 4.

Having owned both the iPhone4 and Charge, I can say they are both great devices. The answer really depends on what you want to get out of your phone. The iPhone has far superior battery life, itunes syncing keepings things simple, the browser is far superior to any Android browser, and overall - the phone just works.
With that said, Android/Charge is the better option in my opinion. I love LTE, much prefer the 4.3" SAMOLED screen, and love that I can easily swap things like keyboards, themes, fonts, etc. I also like how google does not try to tell you what you want, much like Apple does.

If you want to lock in unlimited data, why would you lock in unlimited 3G data? The only phones on your list right now to lock in unlimited data should be Thunderbolt, Revolution, and Charge, and I'd say that the Charge is by far the best of the 3.

Anyone played with some nes, snes, and psx emulators on the charge? Can it keep up? Is it true you can use Bluetooth gamepads with android phones and any recommendation on a pad? I played with the xperia phone but was not impressed with the screen.

I got my charge this Sunday. I totally love this thing so far, it's not perfect but I am pretty happy with it. I am coming from a touch pro 2 phone. Only thing I miss from the tp2 is that speaker phone was quite a bit louder, and even output volume through usb jack to cassette deck adapter is not as loud as the tp2.
There's some trade off and most are positive. it's a little wider but it's thinner and a lot lighter, I definitely do not miss the extra weight associated with the tp2 and it's keyboard. Screen is responsive, I have not encountered any slowdown with the exception of flash heavy sites. But then again I am not running too much unnecessary junk on the phone.
Battery is usually 2/3 by the time I get back home or 6/7th if I don't use it much. I ended up getting the dock and it's nice, you can charge the phone and at same time an additional battery in a special compartment, don't even need to charge phone. Low battery, please, I just pull one outta the charger pop it in and put the depleted cell in there.
I wish I could force the camera to orientate itself to portrait instead of assuming your taking landscape pictures.
Programs I loaded so far are Google maps., Beautiful widgets, angry bird rio, psx4droid (got lunar 2, ff7 and crash bandicoot warped working), unEcm and linda manager (lets me browse files).
I still got some work to do, I have avoided getting the ed2 update because it intrudes with rooting. I've been content with the phone so far so I don't know if I will bother rooting and doing some mumbo jumbo with some voodoo kernel thing. ( I'm still new to the lingo, supposedly it helps make the phone faster).
Upgrades I am thinking of doing is maybe flipping my memory card and putting the difference towards a class 10 card, I ordered some phantomskin screen protector, meanwhile I got the anti glare one from vz the day I got it but I think it just makes it glitter a bit.
Rooting and the kernel thing are still under question.
I love the contrast.

buying a sidekick 4g, any thoughts?

Am going to pick up a SK4G in a little bit and was wondering from our community the general conscensus on how you guys feel about it?
I'm coming from a MT4G, which I am extremely happy with, the way I have it set-up. Any one also have both and maybe a comparison? (not the obvious of course like "the screen is smaller", etc., I've been around a bit, I know a tad about a couple things =] )
I've noticed it doesnt have as crazy as a following as some of the other androids, but that doesnt mean theres no good development going on!

I came from the mt3gs and a VM optimus v afterwards. I wanted the mt4g for the specs. But I couldn't do all touch typing. I found keyboards to help. But it's just not the same as a physical qwerty.
I'm the kind of guy who likes to buy phone 2-4x a year. Maybe not the kings of the hill. But mid to high range phones. Of course, it's expensive to do so. I decided to get a phone to last a whole two-year contract. I opted for the s4g. I was due for an upgrade and even waited until launch date for this over a g2 or mt4g.
What won me was obviously the keyboard. You don't see too many 5-rows available. Spec-wise, this phone is just average. Camera dept. is really lacking. Only 3mp. But lack of led flash was the killer. Still, the keyboard was winner. The physical design is nice. I especially liked the sliding mechanism. Half-phone sliders, like the mt3gs, just feel faulty and flimsy. You could pull the halves apart or slide past the closing stop point. Not that an average person would. But I like to conduct stress tests. This mechanism is sturdy. People have dropped plenty times and claim the mechanism is just as sturdy as it was at purchase.
Also, the screen tilt really makes a difference. Using my mt3gs after this makes it really apparent. It makes using a non-tilt screen really hard to adjust back to.
The phone does come with some bugs and issues, which you can read through the forums (I have a thread over at tmo forums and adroid central entitled "bug report and other issues".) However, rooting and getting custom rom Smooth Maximus GingerClone will make the phone a new phone. The speed is fast and lag hardy present. Only minute issues still remain, yet to be resolved.
Overall, especially if you need a physical keyboard, I would suggest this phone. It is highly recommended you get Smooth Maximus for its best value. If all-touch phones didn't bother me I would go for a mt4g, g2, or wait for the mt4gs. But for you, as a backup phone this is an awesome investment. I would wait for the mt4gs, though, just for its specs and future android development.

I would say don't. You will miss the MT4G. I did the same thing Saturday night. I got rid of it last night. The phone has a nice keyboard and stuff... but the performance of the phone lacks! I mean it has a 1ghz processor and all, but its nowhere near fast as a vibrant.

3 days after I got the SK4G I traded it immediately and got a Nexus S instead. That phone wouldn't send or receive texts and it also wouldn't call or receive calls until I restarted. But that might have been wifi callings issue though. And if you browse the web a lot then this is not your device since the screen is so small. The only thing I liked about the phone was Cloud Text and the phenomenal keyboard. Although, as all Samsung slider keyboards do, it tends to once in a while not register a key when typing.
The quality of the SK also lacks significantly compared to the myTouch....
Just my 2 cents.

Listen , you should do a bit research before posting in this thread imo .
It's a 1GHz of course it lack's performance , the Galaxy & SK4G have the same processor & gut's & once you install a custom kernel & ROM you will be fine , there is no Wifi Calling issue & browsing the web is fine , Cloud Text & the keyboard is amazing .

I don't wanna be bias so I'll give my honest opinion. If you are a power user, don't get this phone. Though it runs a lot more smoothly on a custom root setup, it still has tiny lag, as enoch pointed out it doesn't register all button keyboard presses. The only reason you should get the sk4g is for the keyboard alone. If not then a more powerful phone may satisfy your needs.
If you are a power user, don't get this phone. If you're getting a phone just cause, you can consider this. I love the phone and haven't put it down since. But if this is a main phone for two years on contract, you can get something better.
Lol, I don't mean to contradict my earlier post. I'm not as bias with this one.

i would recommend the sk4g. coming from all-touch smartphones like the nexus one and hd2 running android and the hd7, i am happy with the sidekick 4g. i generally avoided android phones with qwerty keyboards because most are sliders and i hate phones with too much movement.
the droid pro was my dream form factor for an android phone but since i am happy with tmo there was no way i would switch to verizon just for that phone. plus the resolution on the droid pros smaller screen was a turnoff.
the slider on the sidekick 4g is pretty sturdy. the keyboard is awesome. i use my phone a lot for business and the sidekick 4g was the last smartphone on my list. but after comparing to other qwerty androids out there the skg4 seemed to be one of the better.
the camera is only 3m and no led flash. but the quality of the pictures is pretty good for being 3m. depending on what rom i had on my hd2, the sk4g's cam took pics just as good.
the speakerphone is pretty good. better than any htc ive had.(g1, mytouch 3g, hd2, hd7, nexus one).
even though its mostly made of plastic, its pretty durable and not as 'cheap' feeling as some claim it to be. i actually think its one of the more better built phones ive had(besides the hd2).
as for performance, even though it has the same 1GHz hummingbird processor as the galaxy s, tab, etc... it doesnt feel as smooth. most of the lag can be noticed while unlocking, navigating through any custom ui, and switching back to home screen from some apps. but once you are inside of an app it feels just as smooth and snappy as other 1GHz smartphones.
if i were you i'd probably wait until the mytouch 4g slide comes out.. its not too long. im not really digging the mytouch4g/slide's front looks and not liking how the touchscreen is fully exposed on all sides as opposed to the sk4g's screen/slider is protected on two sides.

I know my phones. I know it technically has the same guts as any Galaxy S phone. But I can tell you any Galaxy S phone feels so much more faster than this phone does. I mean I was shocked that the phone didn't perform like a 1ghz device should! I did install Bali with voodoo enabled and that didn't make much difference. While on the vibrant the difference was almost night and day.
And yes I pointed out that Cloud Text and the keyboard are Amazing!
But the phone is just sluggish.
If he is a power user, he needs to look elsewhere because this phone won't suffice your need of power. I mean I found my self restarting the phone every few hours while on my myTouch 4G I never had to restart.
Another thing I should also point out is that battery life isn't the greatest. The phone wasn't lasting me even 8 hours a day (I'm more of a power user). While the myTouch would last me 22+ hours on the Virtuous Unity ROM or 18+ hours on stock. The phone with a keyboard that lasted the longest that I ever owned (android) was the G2 I was getting a solid 36+ hours of use. It was Stunning!!
My suggestion would be wait a few weeks and you can get the myTouch 4G Slide.

I would recommend this phone if you are a hardcore qwerty user like myself. I came from the MT4G and I got this phone through craigslist and I have been satisfied. Is it a high end phone? Maybe if this came out last summer but it does not stop this from being a good phone. Even though the development is not as great as other phones ( I do appreciate the support!) There is not much wrong with this phone. 3 MP is weak for a camera nowadays but it does its job. Is the phone sluggish at times? Sometimes but with the gingerclone rom and bali kernal it has decreased. With more roms in kernals in the future it should change indeed. As for the battery I let the battery die and let it charge completely and no lie got 24+ hours of battery life which consisted of playing Chrono Trigger on my phone (keyboard controller ftw) but as everyone else has been saying if you want value and a 5 row keyboard then sk4g, if you wanna throw some more money and wanna be that suave guy with a fancy phone then please get the mt4gs and tell me how it is ;-)

most people who are all hardcore with buying the latest and greatest may disagree. My point of contention is, when your a guy like me who has to keep up with multiple females at any given moment there is no better phone. Simply put, *****es love texting. The only competition we have as far as touch screen texting is the Droid boomerang. I forget the model designation but the thing is ****ing retarded huge. Next up we have the blackberry, but the closed source OS was the major boner killer for me.
With all that said, if you **** *****es, like lots of *****es. There is no better phone. All the other ************s struggle to keep up. I don't know how, but all the females I know get at least 45 WPM out of those ****ing dinosaur Nokia bricks. I can't do that ****, but I do know that with a SK4G I can get 45 WPM+ with nearly 100% accuracy.
