So I've had my iPhone 4 since release and I've been happy with it but itching for AT&T to get a decent android phone for me to try. I'm eligible for partial upgrade and because I'm on premiere I get an additional 10% off; which the Corp store agreed to honor; so total price was $269. Luckily they were busy when I got there and I had some time to play with it. Very solid phone. But I've been debating the whole front facing camera thing. I Skype regularly with my parents who are overseas and I FaceTime with my wife (more once our baby is born in April. SO the lack of a front facing camera was big. I've also heard horror stories of android and battery life; so when I found it it was only 1250mah I couldn't believe it. And after playing around with it I realized that the browser is not on the same level as the iphones. I watch a lot of videos on CNN and when I tried it using the flash Player on android it took a long time. On the iPhone the HTML 5 page pulls up and videos are near instantaneous. The browser just seemed a lot more fluid. I dunno I haven't made a final decision but wanted to see somebody doses perspective who went from iphone4 to inspire
I sold my iPhone for $ 500 and never looked back. I picked up the inspire this morning and after an hour of frustrating debacle with the radio Shack guy I got to playing with it.
I had owned an evo before but this blows it out of the water. If you can get by the fact that it doesn't have a front facing camera you will be pleased. The phone is super fast and the display is beautiful. I'm working on my first charge and the battery is lasting. I do not miss my iPhone at all.
I am sorry if my writing seems choppy but I'm currently playing with SwiftKey
Cool. Let me know In a few days after you've been using it for a while. The other very annoying thing (and this is the iPhones fault) is that the damn iPhone uses a micro sim. So i can't just switch back and forth between the two. I'll probably have to pick up a micro sim adapter that would allow it to be used sit regular sim slots
I sold my iphone and I am very happy with my phone. So nice not needing itunes and being able to use the storage in my phone. Its also nice being able to add ringtones and sounds so easily. IMHO the inspire screen is just as good.

I agree with everything he said.
@OP: That's what I hear too, also have seen, that the experience on iOS is just a little smoother than the Android experience, and I can understand where they are coming from.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
I sold my i4 last night and bought my inspire today. My advice to you is get an ipod touch 4gen for your face time. That us my plan as I live apple for their audio. If Android made a device similar to the touch than I would still have my iPhone but that's not the case. Plus this phone is solid and not cheap like others. Doesn't feel like I've skipped a beat. Good luck. Also my speck case makes a difference because that's why I loved iPhone were the accessories.

switch to verizon and get the thunderbolt its has lte and a front facing camera
I just got rid of my iP4 for the Inspire and I'm not gonna miss it. I've had a ton of phones in the last year and this might be my favorite. The speaker is a little weak, but I'm used to that from HTC. Screen is brilliant and while it may not be the retina display I prefer the larger size.
I haven't had a chance to evaluate battery life yet of course, but I pretty much know what I'm getting there.
I charged mine fully and have been playing with it for a while now. The battery has gone down only a tad - in no way can you literally 'watch the battery drain'. I think this will only improve with root. And the screen seriously is just as impressive as the retina display. It's really tough to see pixels on this thing - everything is bright, sharp and clear.

Except best buy wants 299 on contract and 799 off
this will be my situation. i am brand new to this forum, so forgive me lol.
My first smartphone was the G1, loved it but decided to switch to iPhone 3g.
Sold that to by Nexus One. Loved it as well, but sold it to get the i4.
Now, i'm selling my i4 to get the inspire. So it's not my first Android, but I've become sorely accustomed to the "stupid" nature of iOS. Returning to android will take some getting used to.
I am trying this android thing out. Came from iphone 4 but still debating. I may return it because of battery issues and also music management sucks. Cant manage playlists. Also, bluetooth control does not work on the included player.

I won't be using this for music except for slacker and pandora, and will stick my iphone4 in the glovebox and listen to the ipod while in the car. Have a small ipod if I ever need to take one somewhere.

The only difference is that you can see the touchscreen grid on the inspire, but not on the iphone.
@rican
Not exactly sure what you are referring to regarding managing playlists but I use isyncr and it works perfectly for me. With the wifi addon you can sync them over your home network as well.
Thanks newter55, I will give isyncra try.
The main problem so far is battery life and bluetooth music controls. It will not let me pause, change tracks, etc. Any work around for this? I am a bit new to android and do like the inspire.
I use MixZing Basic for music, works perfectly with playlist.
I like this phone a lot. The only concern I have is call freezing. I had a G1 before, it freezes a lot when answering a call. It forced me to switch to IPhone 4. I hope this one doesn't have the freezing issue so I can sell my IPhone 4 on ebay, haha

Thats good; keep in mind though that you're using a new phone and the battery life will get worse the more apps you download, the more widgets you have, and as you add more screens and files to the phone.
You should definitely take advantage of rooting wnd trying to find a ROM that has undervolting and over/under clocking to get the most out of the battery.
I have used my stereo Bluetooth headset and I can pause and skip tracks. I'm using stock player.

I just put official to reduce the amount of individual threads. Anyway, since some people are getting their Captivates, please post your first impressions of the device below. Also please include pictures of your phone to make it less boring! Also describe your experience getting it at the store, I'm sure people will want to know things when they get theirs.
Will update when I get it.
n' for the love of god, plz try out the gps
Picked mine up yesterday at the local ATT store. It was only $350 no commitment.
(I am coming from a tilt2)
This thing flies. Yes menus may jerk a little, but thats because of all of the Samsung and ATT crap. It is definitely worth the money. It is much lighter and thinner than I expected too.
Now if we could only figure out how to root this thing and kill the ATT and Samsung stuff
EDIT: GPS is great. Locks in about 5-15 seconds for me.

wooo 1 confirmed good gps experience!
im glad you like it. cant wait to pick one up myself
Wow you got it quick! I could have sworn that ATT was going to release the device later in the week. Where you are, it is already released? Do they have store models as well (for demo purposes)?

No store models out. They may let you try one out though.
I knew since it was supposably coming out on Sunday that they would have to have them before then because nobody that I know of delivers sunday. So id been calling every day since monday to see if theyd gotten them in, and finally yesterday they did
i think samsung pressured att to move up the launch because the droid 2 (or whatever its called) came out yesterday as well
EDIT: if anyone has any questions please shoot. im glad to share the wealth

is there stutter in the videos u record at 720p on objects moving quickly? saw a youtube of droid x and galaxy recorded clip and the galaxy had stutter when panning and on cars driving by.
quick question, how is call quality on the phone? also speaker phone quality?
I havent had any problems with video record quality or stuttering, but i will put it to more tests later
As far as call quality: reception is unparalleled on any phone ive used. I can hear people better than I have ever been able to. The quality of the audio you send out is upper average. The dual mike noise cancellation works almost without a flaw, however. Speakerphone is 99% as great my old tilt2, which was the best speakerphone I have ever heard.
And as far as fingerprints? dont worry about those. This phone's screen is so great that i never notice them even though it can accumulate quite a few
only complaints so far is that the stupid power cord receptacle is cheap and it doesnt lock the power cord in when charging, and that gameboid for some reason doesnt work correctly
im trying to get this phone for my girlfriend. i was looking on the ATT website but i don't see it, but you picked it up in store...are they slowly coming to all the stores?
what is gameboid?
another user posted something about the power cord then corrected himself saying it was the way he had it plugged in. try playin around with it. i think he said something about a slide cover he hadnt opened all the way
@thisguy10
its hit or miss at local stores. call ahead n confirm they have it and will sell it.

I wonder if your device is just an oddball in this regard. Most of those adapters are fairly snug in the devices I've used. Has anyone else talked about this in reviews and videos? I've watched a few and haven't heard anything, but perhaps I just ignored it.
-In general how is the navigation in terms of smoothness ?
-How is xvid/divx video play back ?
-I know it plays several audio formats, but does it play FLAC ?

Dual mic nosie cancellation? I was under the impression that there was just one mic.
Well i dont know but if there is no dual mike cancellation, whatever software/hardware filter they are using worked really well
I will have to test different video formats when I get home for benchmark sake.
Just went by the apple store in the mall because it was on the way to lunch. I loaded some websites on the demo iphone 4 and my captivate side by side at the same time. as far as loading speeds its pretty much a draw, which is good. Opera mini was significantly faster, but of course that is a preprocessor browser and a completely different animal. I tried rotation benchmarks and the Captivate for sure wins that one. Keyboard on the iphone4 is def better than the samsung keyboard, but if you switch to swype (and know how to use it) it is like 300% faster
@ systoxity
you are correct about the door not being open all the way. i charge it before i go to bed so i guess i didnt see that the door was still partially closed because my lights were out
@I,Rookie
Window speeds are fast, except with the Samsung widgits. I am very impressed so far. I could be biased though because i am coming from a tilt2 which was uber slow
btw does anyone know of a good Android RSS reader that does podcasts too?
Can you change the Iphone like "shortcuts" that are on the bottom of the screen? I've seen several videos saying that you are stuck with the defaults but seem to remember watching someone change them in a video a few days ago, but can't find it now.
Going off a hands-on video, I believe you have to go into the App Drawer and then hit menu then edit.
Has anyone tried the DLNA sharing (sharing video/music from a desktop to the phone on a LAN)? Is it laggy?
Wireless Tethering?
One of the Samsung videos mentioned wireless tethering. Has anyone check the Captivate for that capability?
Alright, here are my first impressions. I don't have one yet, but I got the chance to play with one for a while.
----Screen----
It's beautiful. The most impressive part is that blacks are truly black. The colors are impressive as well and aren't as oversaturated as the AMOLED screens on the Incredible and N1. Sharpness wise, the Captivate is on par with the Incredible and N1. Like the AMOLED screens on the Incredible and N1, these new Super AMOLED screens still aren't as sharp as LCDs. You can see jaggies if you look close. If you're coming from an iPhone 4, you will definitely notice that the Captivate's screen is less sharp.
----Launcher and UI----
Scrolling between home screens is pretty smooth. It's not iPhone smooth, and it's not quite as smooth as the HTC Aria, but it's on par with the Incredible and Evo and a lot smoother than the Droid X (which is awful). Swiping through the application drawer is iPhone smooth though, which is appropriate because it looks nearly identical to the iPhone interface. Scrolling through lists on this phone isn't iPhone smooth, but it's smoother than any other Android phone. Samsung has also implemented elasticity within many lists so that they bounce when you reach the end. I like it. Oh, and live wallpapers run like butter.
----Browser----
Scrolling around web pages is very smooth. Again, it's not iPhone smooth, but it's smoother than any other Android phone. Unfortunately, the browser has one major flaw. It doesn't reflow text to fix the screen when you zoom in. This is something you may not appreciate unless you've used an HTC phone or some alternative browser with this functionality. After using the Aria for the past two weeks, I can say that browsing is tedious and frustrating on the Captivate without this feature. I'm not sure if Dolphin supports this functionality, but if it does it would instantly become my default browser if I got this phone.
Update: It seems the browser DOES reflow text, but only when you double tab or use the buttons to zoom, not when you pinch to zoom. In light of this, it's not such a big deal. I could live with the default browser.
----Lag/Stalling----
Some refer to it as lag. Others refer to it as the stalling issue. Either way, it's real and it's there. I noticed it whenever I was in an application and pressed the home button to return to the home screen. I set my Aria next to it and compared them side by side. My Aria returned to the home screen faster every single time. On the Aria, returning to the home screen happened instantly, while on the Captivate it often took a second or two, or sometimes as much as 5 (yes FIVE) seconds! I first noticed the issue when leaving the Maps application. It consistently took 3 or 4 seconds to return to the home screen from the Maps application.
If it weren't for the fact that there is supposedly a fix for this (which isn't exactly foolproof and may have side effects by the way), this would be a total deal breaker for me. It's that bad. I really hope Samsung releases an update soon to fix the issue for those who don't want to go tinkering with the OS, but Samsung isn't exactly known for their support or quick releases.
I have had the Inspire for a few days and I thought I'd give my 2 cents. Just to give you some background, I have had dozens of smartphones. I benched my iPhone 4 for this phone.
Initially, my main concern was battery life. I'm happy to report that it's not an issue. While 1250 maH sounds like fail for an Android device with a 4.3" screen, it's obvious that the next gen Snapdragon is very good at keeping power consumption to a minimum. I unplugged the phone from it's charger this morning at 6 a.m. and at 10 p.m., I still had 30% battery. I had two lengthy calls and used the phone plenty to check e-mail and surf the web. I also streamed Slacker for a while. While I would feel more comfortable with a 1500 maH battery in the phone, the 1250 seems to be sufficient. I actually thought HTC was crazy when I originally read the specs.
Loving the new Sense. Not just the performance enhancements (it's fast), but the little things like the ability to skin and theme the device. Unlike Motoblur, Sense UI actually enhances Android. I have always felt this way, having had several HTC Android devices, but now I feel more so.
Screen is great. I don't like that you can see so many of the capacitive screen dots at times, but I can live with it. The screen is super responsive and very clear.
The Camera is actually really good. The main reason I held onto my iPhone 4 for so long was for the Camera. Every phone I have tried (I'm looking at you, Captivate) has let me down in the Camera department, but so far, I find the Inspire's Camera to be very sufficient. I love the interface and all of the effects, and the picture quality is excellent. Overall, the iPhone 4 is still slightly better, but HTC definitely put a good camera in this phone. It's the first phone since iPhone 4 that I actually have confidence in the picture quality (Samsung Focus was close) and wouldn't hesitate to use as a standalone camera. As some reviews have stated, the flash does make some night shots yellow, but this only appears to be true of fairly close-up shots.
Honestly, the only thing I wish this phone had was a Front Facing Camera. As little as I used it, it was just nice to know I had it on my iPhone 4. Still, I wouldn't trade this for an Atrix. I know that the phone will be more stable, functional, and I'll get an update to Android faster with HTC. Motorola soured me when I had my Droid X and proved that they shouldn't be allowed to mess with software.
Forget dual core. While the specs of the Atrix are impressive, I find this phone to be very responsive and smooth. It's clear that the next gen Snapdragon is more than sufficient for the task.
My only real wish with this phone is that I could uninstall ALL of the bloatware. I hate that about Android. WP7 lets you uninstall all apps and iPhone doesn't allow any in the first place. Android seems to be the whipping boy of carriers. I hate that the apps are ROM locked and that you have to root to get rid of them. This is especially true of the AT&T Navigator, which is pointless on Android in the first place. It's deeply integrated, too, so it shows up as an option when you click on a contact (use AT&T Navigator to get you to their address). I could hide these apps with Launcher Pro, but I shouldn't have to. AT&T disabling app side-loading is crap, too. We can always use side-load wonder machine (thank you Android Central), but disabling the feature is like taking a steaming dump on what Android is about (openness) to me.
Still, overall, I feel this is one of the best devices available on AT&T, and the only real Android option. Samsung needs to sort out their GPS issues (no, the software fix didn't resolve it. The issue is bad hardware) and Motorola (looking at you, Atrix) always manages to ruin perfectly good hardware with an encrypted bootloader and buggy software "enhancements". If you don't absolutely need a FFC, then this is your #1 Android choice on AT&T.
Sorry for the long-winded post. I originally set out to say "hey, the battery life really is good" and got carried away.
Good review,
And I pretty much agree 100% with everything you have said.
But as I may have to have a FFC I'm going to keep my iphone 4 around for a while.
I still can't believe that I may actually have to have a FFC soon. HAHA whatever my company is odd.
I was running the DesireZ Rom on my HD2 and I'm quite pleased with how this runs in stock form. I can't wait to get rid of the junk.
Coming from an HTC Aria, I also had concerns about battery life but was immediately impressed when I started using the Inspire. My first run of the battery from a full charge was about 28 hours which included phone calls, texts, web, pandora and much camera and video use at a concert. I got this phone expecting it to only last 12 hours max but was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a lot of battery drain even when not in use but that hasn't been the case at all. Battery consumption remains relatively untouched when the phone is not in use. I turn off data, gps and wifi unless I need them; I don't need things syncing constantly. I also keep the screen brightness at about 40%. I can't wait to see even better performance once I root and install a custom ROM.
I should also mention that the Inspire charges very quickly, at least as fast as an iPhone and much faster than any of the Galaxy S phones.

One more update: I said in my review that the only thing I really missed was a FFC and the only thing I really used that for was self portraits.
I just discovered in the camera app on the Inspire, not only a self-timer (yay), but a "self portrait" setting. The self portrait setting automatically uses face detection to take the picture after you turn the phone around. I just tested it and the picture came out perfect.
I'm officially sold on this phone.
That was totally my exact feelings. I love this phone! I sold my Iphone 4 for 445 and am so glad I exchanged the Captivate for this baby. The pictures are awesome! The speed is great and yes, there are apps I miss on Itunes, but my hubby has an Iphone 3gs...

For self-portrait? It's built into the camera software. You launch the camera, then push menu and it's the first option.
I tried playing with it but I'm a bear of little brain do I select self portrait then press the shutter then turn the camera around? Or turn the camera around and try to find the shutter button when I can't see it?

You don't have to push any buttons. After you select self portrait, just turn the phone around and try to hold it steady while it finds your face. There needs to be at least decent light for it to work.
That's pretty cool. Thanks
Will it work on T-Mobile?
Do you guys think i will be able to use it on T-Mobile US, with 3g? I had a Desire HD but had to sell it because it was only Edge with T-Mobile

Nope same problem all ATT phones have on T-Mob. The data is using the wrong radio frequency to be 3G it will be edge only.
I tried out the demo in an AT&T store yesterday and I really love it. My one problem with it was the ring around the camera feels....wrong. I don't know if it was just that unit but you could turn it and it made it feel cheap. This isn't a big enough problem to keep me from buying this phone once my birthday comes around in April but it bothered me. Anyone else notice this?
Just tried to turn mine and it won't.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I'd need a pair of needle nose pliers to even begin to move mine. Sounds like the demo unit has seen some battle action.
Mine either
I don't particularly like the way it protrudes, but I can live with it. A case would take care of that (it would even out the back so it was flush with the camera protrusion), but I don't like using cases on my phones.
You also have to be careful when you set it down, or it'll scratch the metal ring around the camera. While this protects the lens, it'll decrease the value later if you want to sell it. Otherwise, I love the build quality.
The only issue I have had is that the Messaging app seems to lock up my phone completely every so often. I haven't tried an alternative, like Handcent to see if the issue persists. I also couldn't place a call or get data today until I reset the connection (airplane on/off), which is a first for me.
Overall, pretty minor bugs for a very nice phone.

After having tried it in low-ish light, I recommend LOTS of light, and disabling the flash.
Those spots in front of my eyes are laughing at me.
Like it says and I am sure a million people have asked. I have done the research but now I am just looking for others opinions. Would you leave the iPhone 4 for this phone? I am seriously debating it because of the customization options. One thing I like about the iPhone is ease of use. What are your opinions?
I've had the Inspire for about a week now. I switched from the iPhone 4 for the same reasons you are thinking of. But now I'm seriously thinking of switching back. The Inspire is really cool but the battery life sucks and the ringer is barely audible for me. I work in a warehouse and it pretty loud in there but with my iPhone I had no problem hearing it. And it's aggravating to me to have to take my charger with me to work. I use my phone for about a hour and a half surfing the net through out my work night (breaks and lunch), and if I don't charge itwill almost be dead when I get home. On a good note the display is killer and you can customize it to fit your wants and needs. My favorite part of the phone is the weather annimation. My friend at work has the Evo and this was the closest thing to it that AT&T offers. If they could fix the battery and ringer on it it would deffinatly be a keeper for me. But that's just my 2 cents.
I left the iPhone 4 32gig for the inspire 4g. I haven't looked back. Messing around with an iPhone is like child's play compared to the inspire. (Speaking in terms of rooting vs jailbreaking)
I love this phone. Not to mention 4g.....
I left an iPhone4 for the HTC Inspire. The Inspire is on a another level, makes the iPhone look like a go phone. I am having problems with the "4G" in my area. Phone is switching back and forth between service and causing it to not work that well. If AT&T's 4G works well in your area, I say go for it! It takes a few days to get used to Android, but IMO it is superior.

I agree inspire's battery sucks but for me it's OK. With average usage, I could get 12-15 hours per charge. On the other hand, I see people selling 1600mAh battery on ebay for like $11. Not sure if it helps?
I think it depends on what you want. I've been on iOS since the beginning, and I got to the point where I was bored with it. I like the Inspire because I can tinker with it and play with different things. The Sense really helps complete the package. Battery life is a big one. If you have access to power throughout the day, not a big deal. However, having to constantly worry about battery life sucks.
Other things I miss.
- Apps/games. So many more games out there for the iOS.
- Push notifications - Granted, I can use yahoo mail to get my push, but really, I wish there was a good email app for both gmail and yahoo where push would work correctly. Push for facebook. If you use facebook a lot, you'll miss the push notifications. Yes, there is flow and you can work around it, but it's not simple. And half the time, I can't access some pages in flow which directs me to the web version.
- In general, apps on both platform tend to be a little better on the iPhone. ex. Facebook - Can't tag friends in native app. Navigon GPS - Can't have the maps in storage. Yes, I know google maps is there, and it's nice, but it's not quite on the same level.
All in all though, I've already sold my iPhone 4. If the 5 makes some huge strides (and it has to be in the OS, not the hardware) I might switch back. As for now, I'm enjoying my Inspire and it's widgets and integration w/ google. I got an iPod touch for all my iOS games though
Thanks for the responses guys!!! I said the exact same thing to myself, I have my iPod touch for the games I will miss out on hahahaha!!!
Had the 3gs, iphone4 before this inspire. Never looked back. Im with you on the ease of use on the iphones, but because of that not much customization is available. Before my iphones, i had the touchpro, played around with roms and stuff but still not quite satisfied, then went on to apple. My inspire is not rooted/flashed but much more fun and intuitive then the iphones and the winmo. It should be a while before i decide to change again.
Good luck

If you enjoy tinkering with your phone, you'll love the inspire/android.
and if you have an ipod touch, I don't see any reason not to switch anyway.

Yup... I have iPod 3G to satisfy IOS needs while Inspire to satisfy Android needs

Like it says and I am sure a million people have asked. I have done the research but now I am just looking for others opinions. Would you leave the iPhone 4 for this phone? I am seriously debating it because of the customization options. One thing I like about the iPhone is ease of use. What are your opinions?

Me and my buddy both came from iPhone 4 to Inspire HD (After both buying the Atrix on release day and returning them).
My honest opinion is that I like things about both, I don't find either one a "clear" winner. However I am bored with iOS and Jailbreaking and it is a really nice change of scenary. Android is a lot more fun to play with. The phone itself is great.
With it rooted, overclocked, and rommed the phone runs blazing fast. The stock ringtones/notifications are too quiet but if you download some it can be plenty loud enough. Battery life is perfectly fine depending on the Rom and how you manage it. I have no problems making it through a day with the phone. (6am to 11+pm) but I have made a conscious effort to optimize for battery performance.
If you are going to get in to the root/rom side of things I think you will be very happy with the change.
The iphone 4 is predictable day in and day out.. you know every app works for it and the simplicity in the system is a major buying point..
with that being said.. i find it really boring. I went from the iphone 4 to the inspire 4g and even in its stock form, you cant help but be impressed with the HTC Sense system. For example, the integration of social network and daily agendas was nicely implemented in the form of widgets.
The real reason that i bought the inspire though was the ability to root the phone therefore customizing the phone to my needs, the iphone 4 jailbreak can do it but to a lesser degree. For instance, the battery on the rooted inspire can last a whole day of moderate; without me worrying about bringing a powermat portable charger.

It's a no brainer if you have a Touch. To be honest, I'm still baffled by people who own both an iPhone and a Touch. My recommendation is to buy the Inspire off contract. Costs $400, the next iPhone will be double on eBay (I save my upgrades for this reason).

I don't know about the iPhone 4, but last weekend I was showing off the Inspire to some friends who have 3 iPhones in their family and they were all drooling over my phone.
IMHO the only thing the iPhone 4 is better at is the camera.
I just became elegible to upgrade my phone, I keep hearing things that vz is gonna switch to tiered pricing and would prefer to get locked in before they change things. Really split between those 3 choices, get a charge with it's amazing amoled screen thats larger and customization of android, or go with iphone 4 with it's higher pixel density, built quality and pretty good camera detail, I can always wait for the apple event on the june 6th-10th and risk being closer to tiered pricing.
I looked at dx 2 but I just couldn't get into the whole pentile screen, it just wasn't right for my taste even with a higher resolution.
Get the charge. You can always sell it on craigslist for an iphone 4. Besides iphone sucks lol

I've used every single iPhone every year since Apple initially release it. It wasn't until last summer (2010) that I got on Android. At first I didn't like it; i thought it was pretty complicated, confusing, and too frustrating to use. I didn't like Android 1.8 that was pushed onto the HTC Hero as well. So I went back to iPhone. A week later, I got the HTC Evo 4G. I started to like Android a bit more, but still used iPhone 4 as my "daily beater," if you know what i mean.
Long story short, I LOVE android now. I never want to use another POS iOS software device again. Android is the way to go, buddy.

Question: If you buy the Charge on contract, and let's say in 6 months you want something else, you can't sell it because it's ESN will still be tied to your account till the contract is up, correct?

It's tied to your account until you want to change it, but it requires little to no effort. You can either change either online through the verizonwireless.com portal or by calling customer service.
Once you have changed the ESN/IMEI tied to your account to your new phone, you can do whatever you want with the old phone as it is no longer tied to your account.
There is absolutely no comparison between these two phones. The charge does everything better except iTunes and battery life. Faster phone and way faster network = no comparison.

Well, out of the box, the Charge lags quite a bit. In fact, it's almost to the point where it is unbearable. But the Debloated ED2 solved that problem. There is ZERO lag now.
Android is a hobby, not just a phone, and once you start playing with it, you'll be hooked. iPhone is pretty much a phone for simpletons who just want a smartphone.
The Charge is similar to the iPhone in some minute ways, probably the closest thing to an iPhone on the Android OS. Im trying to sell my iPhone for Verizon now because I just like Android better.

im considering going back to my iphone 4, switching back n forth between the charge and thunderbolt right now .... as someone said, there can be quite a bit of lag with the charge, try adding a widget to your homescreen, takes a really long time to load the menu of choices ... i actually like using the tb more than the charge but can't read the screen very well in sunlight, so i use the charge more...
as for the iphone 4, most of the apps are done better than the android version, no idea why but that's the way it looks to me.... a minus for the iphone 4 is lack of voice integration, sometimes i'm too lazy to type a txt msg, so i just speak it when i'm using an android phone... it can be done on iphone 4 but you have to use 2 programs, just a pain in the ass ...
also, i don't have great eyesight anymore so it's hard to read the fonts on the iphone 4 at times, on my charge i've installed bigger system fonts so i can read pretty much everything without wearing glasses
oh yeah, games run better on iphone 4 than the charge... could be because of the smaller screen on the iphone, angry birds seasons can really lag on my charge..
another plus for android is the 'integration' of things like pics... there is an option to share with many different social networks, email, txt, etc... can be done on the iphone but usually have to use a different program....
all in all, it's a tough choice.... the iphone is really easy to use, has some great apps, and is stable for the most part..
the charge has a really nice screen, not the resolution of the iphone, but still looks great ...
too many choices, lol, hope this helps some.
Yea, what everyone else said in comparison between iPhone and Android OS/Charge is spot on.
If you're not ready to settle for a Charge and a bit unwilling to go back to iPhone/iOS, then you can definitely wait for the SGS2. I picked one up from the grey market (expansys) and I am loving it. Definitely one of the best phones i've ever used.
I would love to get a galaxy 2 but I don't think its even mentioned to coming to vz, I would prefer to stay with vz, been with them for years and am content with the service.
It's like having to choose from vanilla and chocolate but preferring strawberry.
Only concern with going with iphone is I might get renewed in a 3g data and not be allowed to switch to a 4g device without going for the new tiered pricing if thats what they have if I want to sell and change the phone. There's also low quality on youtube video unless I go wifi and it would be more complicated getting my own ringtones in it. Then again the iphone 4 is well built, reliable and stupid proof. Might be harder to unbrick an iphone 4.
You'll only receive biased answers asking this sort of question here - especially given your posting in the Charge sub-forum.
Having owned both the iPhone4 and Charge, I can say they are both great devices. The answer really depends on what you want to get out of your phone. The iPhone has far superior battery life, itunes syncing keepings things simple, the browser is far superior to any Android browser, and overall - the phone just works.
With that said, Android/Charge is the better option in my opinion. I love LTE, much prefer the 4.3" SAMOLED screen, and love that I can easily swap things like keyboards, themes, fonts, etc. I also like how google does not try to tell you what you want, much like Apple does.
If you want to lock in unlimited data, why would you lock in unlimited 3G data? The only phones on your list right now to lock in unlimited data should be Thunderbolt, Revolution, and Charge, and I'd say that the Charge is by far the best of the 3.

Anyone played with some nes, snes, and psx emulators on the charge? Can it keep up? Is it true you can use Bluetooth gamepads with android phones and any recommendation on a pad? I played with the xperia phone but was not impressed with the screen.
I got my charge this Sunday. I totally love this thing so far, it's not perfect but I am pretty happy with it. I am coming from a touch pro 2 phone. Only thing I miss from the tp2 is that speaker phone was quite a bit louder, and even output volume through usb jack to cassette deck adapter is not as loud as the tp2.
There's some trade off and most are positive. it's a little wider but it's thinner and a lot lighter, I definitely do not miss the extra weight associated with the tp2 and it's keyboard. Screen is responsive, I have not encountered any slowdown with the exception of flash heavy sites. But then again I am not running too much unnecessary junk on the phone.
Battery is usually 2/3 by the time I get back home or 6/7th if I don't use it much. I ended up getting the dock and it's nice, you can charge the phone and at same time an additional battery in a special compartment, don't even need to charge phone. Low battery, please, I just pull one outta the charger pop it in and put the depleted cell in there.
I wish I could force the camera to orientate itself to portrait instead of assuming your taking landscape pictures.
Programs I loaded so far are Google maps., Beautiful widgets, angry bird rio, psx4droid (got lunar 2, ff7 and crash bandicoot warped working), unEcm and linda manager (lets me browse files).
I still got some work to do, I have avoided getting the ed2 update because it intrudes with rooting. I've been content with the phone so far so I don't know if I will bother rooting and doing some mumbo jumbo with some voodoo kernel thing. ( I'm still new to the lingo, supposedly it helps make the phone faster).
Upgrades I am thinking of doing is maybe flipping my memory card and putting the difference towards a class 10 card, I ordered some phantomskin screen protector, meanwhile I got the anti glare one from vz the day I got it but I think it just makes it glitter a bit.
Rooting and the kernel thing are still under question.
I love the contrast.
As the topic says I am really considering switching from iPhone to the one x. My issues though are these:
1) battery life. I use my phone alot for texting and web use through the day. How is your battery so far?
2) I use my iPhone to play music ALOT! Last time I tryed android I hated it cause the music players were not as intuitive as "iPod" on iPhone and syncing to iTunes was a hassle.
3) I'm a bit worried about the small 12gb storage but you get 25gb dropbox and I wondered how that works out for playing music
Has anyone come over from iPhone? If so how has your experience been?
Just yesterday I went from a jailbroken iPhone to a galaxy nexus
Here are some of the things I've noticed so far from going to iOS to android
I might get heat for this but iOS has the best tweaks I've seen on a phone and I loved the simplicity of it all, battery life was great and the fact that I could just connect my phone to my truck and my music started right away and I was able to control it through my car stereo was awesome!!
I think the reason I decided to switch to android was because of the freedom Android gives u, I like the fact that I can flash different roms
Honestly its going to take some time to get used to this phone but once I do I'm sure I'll love it as much if not more than the iPhone

1. Easily getting through a whole day. With texts data games browsing etc. From 7am to 11pm. And I generally have 30-40 percent left.
2. Google music is wonderful. I have 10gb of music stored online that I can stream with none taking up storage on the phone. The music app itself is fluid and has a nice UI.
3. Like I said. 10gb of music with none on my phone. I still have like 10gb free on my phone that I don't even know what to use for. I utilize Google drive (5gb) and dropbox (like 30gb).
All in all. I highly recommend one x over iPhone. You will not go back. After using the one x with it's giant glorious display will make going back to the iPhone look silly

Hey there. I'm a bit of an Apple fan and definitely a music lover (music major, producer, audiophile, etc.)
First of all, this is the best out-of-the-box Android experience I've ever seen. Sense 4.0 is gorgeous (as is the display); everything is really slick and easy. Scrolling is as smooth as it is in iOS/WP7 too. If you're coming from an iPhone, you probably won't care about the lack of an SD card slot or the non-removeable battery. You might prefer it for some reasons, even.
Music playback is good on this device. I'm not overly-impressed with the fidelity, but it's not bad. In my opinion, music sounds much better with Beats Audio disabled.
I haven't tested the stock Sense music player, but I would guess that it's georgeous like the rest of Sense. But this is an Android device, so there are dozens of high-quality music players available on the Play Store.
The One X sounds like a good fit for you.

Just an fyi that there is no voice dialing via Bluetooth. Not sure if that would be a deal breaker for you but for those of us in cities where it is illegal to drive and hold a phone in your hand it can be a big deal. Major disappointment for me that this issue has rendered my expensive jawbone era only half as useful as it could be. I'm still looking for a solution but have come up short thus far.

I would suggest waiting to see what gets announced at the WWDC next month to be completely fair and honest.
I'm not an Apple fan boy by any means because while I like their stuff, I think they overcharge customers. They make minor upgrades when they could make major upgrades because they want to take advantage of their customers. It's kinda like the same reason people are outraged at AT&T right now over this bootloader...But worse.
So I think the biggest difference you'll notice is the screen. Aside from that the user interface. You can customize it. Then, the maps app....It actually has a compass and works. ...And then I guess a phone's a phone. The other differences will be much more minor and you likely won't miss the iPhone at all to be honest.
My wife is switching on her next upgrade. She's had just about every single iPhone ever made as well.
Speaking of maps...That may end up being another reason why people switch to Android. The iPhone (all iOS devices) will be using their own maps app in iOS6. This MUST be executed with absolute perfection otherwise they very well could turn away a lot of people. It's extremely difficult to go toe to toe with Google Maps. Even though Apple has been acquiring companies here for a few years and while that whole 3D stuff looks pretty...It has to serve the function of being an informative map with navigation. I highly doubt they will have as many layers/info on there as Google. I sure as heck hope they at least add a compass in there...But while I think it will be visually pleasing (that's Apple's strategy, their "wow" factor and of course lies within the marketing), I don't think it will be particularly more useful than the existing map app. Also note, the map app on iPhone is intentionally not as good as Android. Google of course leaves the best for their own device.
So what's a month right? See what gets announced and then make up your mind. The One X will be plenty new...But if you're just sick if Apple and want an Android, any Android, the One X is a VERY good one.
--edit Oh and the battery will last just as long if not longer than the iPhone's. Certainly longer if you turn off all the sync stuff or decrease (it's decrease right? to make longer between periods) the interval.
I switched over from iPhone in November of 2011...I've had every iPhone except the 4s...there is no comparison whatsoever..the only difference is the simplicity of the iPod...I listen to a lot of music myself and when I switched to the HTC Vivid I got a subscription to Rhapsody..its $14.99 a month...However, you can either stream OR download music to your phone and/or PC...I believe you can authorize 3 devices...when I get in my truck, my phone syncs up via Bluetooth and I can access my library and play what I want..I chose to download my music so I don't use data when I'm away from wifi...actually you can have more music for far less money as iTunes requires purchase of the songs...yes, you can import your CD collection to rhapsody and then transfer to your phone and play through rhapsody or the default music player..the only limitation w rhapsody is you can't burn to disc unless you have imported from your music collection or purchase songs you want and don't have on disc or iTunes...I don't use CDs anymore anyway but there is a program you can get for like $30 that will convert rhapsody files to mp3 or wma files...it is legal...
As far as battery life, the embedded battery in iPhone is smaller than the One X, by about 25%...the One X screen is bigger too, 4.7 inch vs 3.5 on iPhone...I am currently getting about 26 he's on a charge on my One X..
I used to swear by iPhone but I have since seen the light, so to speak, and will never go back...iPhones are simple but with severe limitations, like adobe flash for instance...that's just one of many...The HTC One X is the most advanced, fastest phone on the market right now...the Samsung Skyrocket 3 will be another good one but I'm partial to HTC...hope this helps..

Another former iPhone 4 user here. I think the ICS OS is amazing; for maps, nav, typing, browsing, customizability, etc it is a quantum leap ahead of iOS. The hardware is phenomenal and the screen is gorgeous and perfectly sized.
Battery life has been great for me, yesterday I got 5h20m of screen on time through an 18h day. I could never do that on my 4 (mostly wifi but still...).
I'm still using my iPhone for music, since that's what it's best for. I may not bother trying to get my library of lossless files onto the one x.
