Been looking around for which microsd card to replace my venue pro one with. definitely want a 32gb one. Pulled up a few, are a lot of people having problems with the class 4 cards? Should I stick with a class 2, even though the 4 is about the same price, or cheaper? Here are the few I found, all around $80. Price doesn't matter, just want the one that will work the best.

I'm 100% sure someone had posted the 32GB MicroSD card S/N they use. I don't remember which post it was, it is somewhere in the Venue Pro General form.
I think class 6 should work. Max Miller at ZDNet has posted a blog about how he swapped a troublesome dvp's 8gb card with 32gb n the dvp is working like a charm after that. It has a video aswell.

Whats the largest SD card Windows mobile 7 can handle, and if it's less than 128 will it be able to recognize "partitioned" SD cards?
I use a sandisk 32g class 2 and it works fine. Did find a lot of class 4 of same price but skipped as I only saw that class 2 works from posts online.
And from a random (not sure if reliable though) article online, it says WP7's file system depends on random I/O seek time (or alike) which is a different dimension from class, which gauge the continuous transfer speed.

Why would a slower class work better than a faster class of SD? Class ten is the fastest your able to buy.
If I can buy a class 10 32gb would it work?
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produc...61411-L06D&AID=10657534&PID=749547&SID=forums
I swapped my 8GB class 4 that came with the device to a 32 GB SanDisk class 4. I do notice slower write speeds - 720p video in particular seems to have a lag when capturing. Other than that, the phone is zippy fast.
I bought a Dell Venue Pro (normally hate Dell and don't give them the time of day) and from what i've been reading i'm going to be stuck with a class 2 or 4 (32gb) MicroSD card. And to narrow it down even further supposedly the ones that work best with these phones are sandisk.
So my questions are this. Will I actually be able to use a class 10 microsd card or is it a limitation of the physical phone. I mean windows is capable of 32gb and probably more.
If it isn't able to use class 10 right now will there be a firmware update for the phone that will allow it.
What would happen if i bought a kingston or patriot over sandisk (as i've always considered them the bottom of the pile)
I've been using a 32gb sandisk (class 2) for a couple days now and it's awesome. Despite being class 2, it's way faster than the crappy class 4 that came with the phone.
Random r/w speed is the most important thing to worry about with WP7 devices. Class rating does not say anything at all about random r/w speed, just about the maximum throughput. In fact, there is often a NEGATIVE correlation between class rating and random r/w speed - the higher the class, the lower random r/w.
So that's why class 2, 4, or 6 cards seem to be the best.
so could anyone give me a link of the best 32 gb sd card I can use for my DVP that would be awesome.
the one that came with my phone is starting to fail (constantly getting the black screen with memory card problem and asking me to change cards and reset)
another question
let's say something happens with my phone and I need to send it back for warranty repair, could I possibly switch out the sd card back to the original one, reset and be ok?
So does this phone have a SD card that is expandable? I just got the phone a week ago and thought it was built in and couldn't be changed.

Hello,
Now that Froyo more or less came out and apps will start having Apps2SD function, it's time for a MicroSD upgrade.
What I want is on-phone performance - that running heavy 3D games on SD would perform as smoothly as if it was on internal memory. Is there a general consensus on what brand/class would suffice, and what is overkill? I have no concern over data cable transfer speed, as I'm pretty sure the phone will limit the speed much before the SD card does.
I'm looking at this Sandisk 16gb MicroSDHC Class 2 for $35 after shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Flash...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1275145563&sr=1-1
Anyone know if this would suffice?
Past threads have always went on tangents about good brand vs knock offs, how class is important vs. a marketing ploy, etc etc. Has a general consensus been reached in the xda community over what is sufficient but not overkill for onboard performance? Perhaps people who have already ran App2SD and use games and videos a lot have some input.
Thanks
I have a Top Ram 16 Gig class 6 and I think I paid about the same as you looking to pay for a class2. I also have a class2 that I have had for over a year. I used to use it in my blackberry. It still works and it is made by one of the cheap manufacturers.
Argh, I'm suffering from chronic SD corruption. So I'm in the market for a new chip. Think I'll spring for a 32gb this time. What's the latest on one that's both compatible and fast? And cheap too, that would be nice, links appreciated.
Considering that due to the amount of RAM the N1 has your main apps will be loaded already so card speed is not a significant factor, unless you use lots of different apps on a regular basis.
A faster card is beneficial mostly for the time i takes when I am loading up new music and possibly vids if you use it for that
This is the first 32gb MicroSD card I have seen "In Stock" Pretty expensive for a class 2 though.

Micro SDHC is a standard that supports up to 32gb. Of course it can handle it just fine.
I run a 16gb Class 6 in mine, works fine
bewar ebay, there a lot of folks selling fake cards. They even read as what they were sold as but then fill up mighty quick............
The class is not needed I don't think
I have a class six and have been running games on it from sd for 3 months cant tell a bit of difference. I run linpack from sd and it works fine too!

I'm running a 32gb Sandisk Class 2 in my Nexus as of last Friday. No problems (apart from a looooong time to refresh the media library after resyncing my music).
You can not get a genuine 32GB Micro SD card for US$40.
A good class 2 card (2MB/s) will offer you the same performance as any other class in your phone.
The limitation is not the speed of the card.
Buy a brand name card with the capacity you require and be done with the complexity.

I don't know too much about transfer rates but basically what you're saying is that a a brand name class 2 card will be just as good as say a class 6? I'm in the market for a new SD card as well, and the class 6 cards are much more expensive. I'm wondering if they're worth it.

No, in a phone they're not worth it at all and people who say so are either selling snake oil or are embarrassed because they've paid for one and are foolish for doing so.
The best I can do just at the moment is this:
wikipedia said:
In applications that require sustained write throughput, such as video recording, the device may not perform satisfactorily if the SD card's class rating falls below a particular speed. For example, a camcorder that is designed to record to class 6 media may suffer dropouts or corrupted video on slower media.

The Nexus, like probably every other phone out there, is a) not typically used for high rate sustained write activities and b) is designed to write to class 2 media to begin with.
If you have a large, highly fragmented sd card higher speeds will help. This of course is easy to avoid in the first place.
Get a higher capacity, class 2, brand name card for the same money and you're away laughing.
NB - If somebody waves a magic wand and all of a sudden the Nexus can record video at 1080p at a high enough bitrate then perhaps my advice would be invalidated... but don't hold your breath for that to happen...

Thanks for the info man! I was obviously misinformed, you just saved me a bunch of money
so just curious. now that CM 5.0.8 comes with 720p recording, would a class 2 still suffice?
I am also searching the web recently to look for a cost-effective high vol microSD. My finding is: don't 100% trust the "class" specified by mfr. I used ATTO Disk Benchmark to test two 8G microSD that I have: Transcend 8G Class 6 and Sandisk 8G Class 4.
<Transcend Class6> Write: 6-10MB/s Read: 16MB/s
<Sandisk Class 4> Write: 14MB/s Read: 20MB/s
From similar test results on the web, it seems that Sandisk uses to under-state the performance of their card. Finally I get a Sandisk 16G Class 2 for my N1, and here is the test result with the same setting:
<Sandisk 16G Class2> Write: 7MB/s Read: 20MB/s
Although Sandisk only specifies it as class 2, it actually performs like a class 6.
I suspect the importance of the speed of the SD card too, coz I think the write speed into ROM, should be way slower than 6-7MB/s (correct me if I am wrong ^_^)... If the speed of v2.1 w/o app2sd is acceptable to you, then v2.2 with 6-7M write speed card should be logically fine with you.

huh that's interesting. i just might pick that up from amazon then..
I Dont think fragmentation makes any difference to write speed, these are not mechanical devices like hard disks.
Also defragging is pointless and shortens the life of the card by increasing the number of writes.
I'm thinking about buying a 16gb microsd class 6 card. Will the 6 really make a difference from a class 4 on the eris though? Once they get that fast can the eris really keep up or will it just be excess speed for nothing? Also, I'm guessing a 32gb c6 is out of the question? As far as brands go, are there any that I have to avoid. I'm looking to buy a cheap one from one of those ebay sellers in china with the free shipping. Is this a bad idea? Will it not work with the eris? Thanks.
A lot of money for not a ton of improvement. If you use apps2sd it'll matter more but not hugely.
I use a class 4 8gb Kingston with no problems at all, didn't see the point in buying an exspensive class 6. That and a2sd works great on a class 4
This is a cheap yet quick class 6: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208453

Two worthless posts, dude. You didn't explain, you only gave an opinion, but I'm afraid you're wrong and your uninformative posts didn't warrant reviving two dead threads just to get your post count up.
There are most definitely speed differences between different classes of SD cards.
Next time, think before you post.
I've used 3 cards. The SD card that came with the phone (8GB Class ?), a SanDisk 8GB Class 2 card (from Best Buy for ~$40), and an A-Data 8GB Class 6 card (from Frys for ~$25). The Class 6 card is MUCH quicker in day to day use. Launching most apps (on SD card) is noticeably quicker than the system apps stored on the phone for example. Comparing card to card is night and day as well! The original card was similar in speed to the SanDisk one, but the A-Data card seems about 2-3x faster. Viewing images in the gallery is also much quicker with no lag of loading a picture of relatively high quality.
Summary: There is a noticeable difference! A friend has a Class 4 card and it feels slower but seems to be closer to the Class 6 end than it is to Class 2. That isn't to say it's slow/bad, but it isn't as fast, especially in gallery.
(all on Fresh Installs of CELB Froyo 4.3)
Fact is.... it makes a difference depending on what you do. here are my tests after buying a class 10 16GB from amazon:
KingMax 16GB class 10:
Writing speed: 13.8 MByte/s
Reading speed: 16.6 MByte/s
SanDisk 8GB Class 2:
Writing speed: 6.56 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.4 MByte/s
I used the following program to test directly from the SD card slot on my laptop, not from the eris:
Program on PC: H2testw.
my camera app takes pictures a tad faster, I assume due to the write speed to the SD card. Other than that I dont use the SD card for much else besides storing and looking photos and playing music. I dont use app2sd.

wow this made me go ahead and wanting to buy the A-Data 8GB Class 6 SDcard
so you say ~$25? I just saw on newegg they were selling for $12.99 w/ free shipping
A-DATA Turbo 8GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card Model TurboSD SDHC 8G
would that be the correct model you have?
I got it at Fry's a couple of months ago so it may have dropped a bit.
And yes, it is.
I've been looking at this... (Class 4)
http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/40130-arsdmcl4-32gb
I have no idea who A-RAM are... but its being sold at a real computer store not ebay so its gotta be legit?
Or I could get this... (Class 10)
http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/40129-arsdmcl10-16gb
But I think I rather the space.
Another quick question, how do I rate my current (8GB) SD card and find out what class it is?
Er, a bump...?
Personally never heard of A-ram but that doesn't mean it's necessarily inferior, why not ask the retailer to provide some benchmark figures for you?. Personally I'd buy the fastest, not biggest card you can afford so would go for the class 10 16gb one.
Try sd tools from the market to bench your current card.
I used to work at PCCaseGear, whho also sold A-Ram, never heard of it before, but the 16Gb Micro SDHC i got performs as fast in a disk test as the nokia 8Gb that came in my N8 before i jumped ship to android. hasn't died yet...
I've used A-Ram before...
Never had a problem with it.
With memory cards I find myself a bit suspicious (bought one a wierd branded mem card for my PSPS and it busted with all my saves...)
Personally I would go for Kingston, Sandisk etc... They also have almost always a 5-year-warranty. I actually just ordered a 32gb Kingston Class 4 couple of days ago.
With phones I would go for size rather than speed. I would get class 10 for a good full hd vidcam or system camera, but not for a phone.
size and speed help, my 32 Gb has a pretty slow write time, which kinda sucks when copying new roms or tunes over. almost considering going back to the smaller but faster a-ram 16gb, solely for write speed.
Ive been using one I picked up from a shop in Aus, a year old now and still runs but some files do go missing... going to buy sandisk from now on.

Dude, a Sandisk Mobile Ultra would pi$$ all over that class 10 card.
WAY too may perople assume that coz, say for example, a Samsung, Patriot, PNY, or whatever make it is...they assume because it is a 'class 10' card.....that it's better and faster......WRONG!!
I have looked into this in GREAT detail......and Bring a Class 10 Samsung, PNY, Kingston (or whatever) to the table......and a Sandisk Mobile Ultra CLASS 4.....yes, CLASS 4, will pi$$ al over the other makes of class 6, 8 and 10!!
I was out looking for a new card and size was not the issue as I hardly ever go over 2-3gb of storage.....so I could of had a PNY Class 10 card for around £20.00.......but instead I went for the SANDISK MOBILE ULTRA CLASS 4 ! !
I've got a couple of old class 4 cards here (NON-Sandisk) and also benchmarked it against my mate's Samsung class 10....
....My little class 4 sandisk mobile ultra BLEW them all away.
please please please don't get any old make, just coz it says "class 10".
Sandisk = the best. FACT!
Here's a Benchmark test result from a very reliable source.
Check this out, very good read:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/microsdhc-memory-card-performance,3011-7.html
"The US-based manufacturer SanDisk is, according to its press releases, the largest manufacturer of flash-based products in the world. Befitting this position, SanDisk offers a complete portfolio of memory cards. The company presents the microSDHC cards on its site’s Mobile Memory section, aiming them at owners of smartphones.
The Mobile Ultra microSDHC card is intended for transferring files between a mobile phone and a PC, which is why it comes with a USB card reader. We tested both the 8 GB SanDisk microSDHC card and the 16 GB SanDisk Mobile Ultra microSDHC. According to the manufacturer, both are Class 4 products.
Class 4 is a real understatement for the Mobile Ultra microSDHC model. Defying its designation, our test sample ran rings around many of the Class 10 cards and exhibited good to excellent read and write performance in all benchmarks. Clocking in at 22.8 MB/s, it even took the lead in our sequential read test. However, it is not quite as fast in the sequential write benchmark, achieving 15.8 MB/s. The card also demonstrates very strong random read and write performance, again winning first place in these categories.
The 8 GB SanDisk microSDHC cannot quite live up to the results demonstrated by its fast Mobile Ultra brother. It really is a Class 4 card, clocking in at 11.6 MB/s sequential reads and 6.1 MB/s sequential writes. Compared to other Class 4 cards, it is fairly slow. Interestingly, the Class 4 Silicon Power microSDHC memory card exhibits precisely the same speed in all benchmarks.
Best part is.....got it at Argos.co.uk for £9.99.
Comes with card reader and software!!
Matt
thanks for the info about this tolls, is a very interesting app
thanks again
I am looking at either a Lexar or Samsung both class 10, both around £37.
any advise as to which one is best based on anyone using.
The other question is do you need to format before use?
At the moment I have a 16gb but it is 98% full. Never chenged a card before was planning to copy the old card into a folder on laptop and then back onto the new card.
Any advise welcome,,,,,,,,

I like transcend more than anything else.
I never had luck with transcend, i have a sandisk 32 gig which works great,
i had a kingston 32 class 10 within a few weeks it just burnt out on me it stop reading and wouldnt want to format or anything
I'm also looking for a 32gb micro sdhc for my HTC Vogue. I currently have a Sandisk 16gb that is nearly full. Earlier today I stumbled onto this thread from here at XDA...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150369
I found it quite helpful. I hope you do too.
I was surprised that class 10 cards weren't the best choice for the things I use my Vogue for.
Here is a passage that surprised me...
"Class 2 and 4 cards have better random access speed and random read/write than class 6 or 10 cards in general. To get higher sequential write speeds, manufacturers sacrifice the random access speeds.".
I would agree with Random read/write access might be better in Class 4 cards than Class 10...
But arent we forgetting that most of the applications are read more than Written when u open it.. I think a faster read speed with lower write speed would still be better than having lower read/write all together...Not unless you are downloading a torrent in background and running HD game with it... infact in that situation.. both cards will fail badly..
I prefer Sandisk.
A class 4 should generally give proper performance... 10 seems a bit overkill imho.
I've used the 8GB class 4 memory card that came with the Sensation for a while, and after switching to a 32GB class 10 Lexar I must say - it DOES make a difference. It's a totally different experience.
Been using SAMSUNG ESSENTIAL 32GB MicroSD for more than 2 months without issues. It has helped me to parallely download videos from tubemate in high speeds. Good writing and reading speeds. No slowdowns/jatter in 1080P recording which iam always using to cap my child.
Just bought a 32GB Class 10 Samsung card from play.com for £34.99. Working great so far!
I got the 16GB SD card for two reasons
1. The 16GB has a faster write speed.
2. I didn't have $90 to spend on the 32GB.
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-MPAGA/US?from_mobile=true
Oh also I did not pat $55 for the 16GB

I know class 10 is faster then class 4 or 6, but just wondering if the Sensation takes advantage of a faster card? For example, will recording in 1080p (on the sensation) be better if i get a class 10, versus a class 4 or 6?

I can say confidently that our phones will perform better using a class 6 over a class 4, but the question of "will our phone use all the speed a class 10 offers?", I can't answer as confident. But I would think that it should not have a problem using a class 10 to its full potential. What class 10 micro are you looking at?
Using Samsung as an example:
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-MPAGA/US
This is a $55 microSD (it was half off last week on Amazon[Cyber Week]), but the read/write is 24MB/21MB and a class 4 only gets 15MB/7MB(http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-SS4GA/US [this is a SD but of a class 4]).
If anything I would get the class 10 just to be future-proof and avoid having multiple microSD's around the house. I'm using Samsung as a reference and I do not have experience with their memory cards so I am not trying to sell Samsung. I did buy a 16GB class 10 microSD from Sammy via Amazon for Cyber Week (only $30), its being shipped right now, if you want an update I will make another post (class 4 v. class10).

thanks. appreciate the info.
on amazon there is a Samsung class 10 16gb for $20 right now. 16gb would be fine right now, but I dont want to be running out of room in 6 months as I like to record video which takes up a ton of room. so thats why im looking for a 32gb (even though i think that will be way more then i actually need).
on amazon i actually dont see any class 6 32gb cards; except for 1 knockoff brand. so it seems like most 32gb cards are either class 2, 4, or 10. i want to go above a class 4, but class 10 are expensive...
thanks
A-Data Class 10 microSD 32GB
bought that one couple of months ago, verry happy with it. was the cheapes one to get back then, about 55€ / 75$
getting 10,5MB/s writing and about 12MB/s reading on USB port. just a little slower than my flash stick...
didnt notice any change while recording videos, but i dont unse the camera that often.

If you are in the U.S. Fry's has the 32GB Class 10 for $20 off
http://www.frys.com/product/6786695?psrid=14599570
That probably expensive also, but I could not find a 32GB Class 6 either.
I'm using a class 10 16gb card in my sensation
seems fine, only thing that is fast is displaying pics in gallery
wish I got a class 6 and saved the money, I haven't tried 1080p video....
just tried a 10sec video. Wrote instantly on card and playback instantly too
10sec vid is 13.96mb
so I think a class 6 card can write at 6mb/s where as class 10 writes at 10mb/s
class 6 is fine!
I was in the same position as you are right now.
I did a little bit of reading and decided to buy a good (SanDisk) Class 4 over a cheap (alot of offers from brands I never heard of) Class 10/6.
My reasons:
1. Good card with lower speed = less chance of corruption
2. The read-speeds are ~ identical, since I don´t really use 1080p I don´t need high write-speeds (allthough 1080p records without a problem)
3. Random acces speed on lower class cards is higher, since the high write speed is a trade off between random access speed and write speed.
After reading about all that the decision was easy

now im really confused...
a good compromise would be a class 6, but obviously i cant find any brand name class 6 32gb.
I dont really know much about random access speed vs write speed....can you enlighten me? are you saying that class 4 is faster in some situations then a class 10?

The random access speed is splitted in write and read. It is the speed whith which a random bit can be written/read.
It is the value that determines the performance of an app using SD-Card for data.
So in daily use, there shouldn´t be much difference between class4/6/10. If you want to use your SD for daily putting tons of different stuff on it, you may be better of with a class 10. If you put a lot of Music on it and leave it there, a class 4 is the way to go.
(Anyone correct me, if I´m wrong here, but that is what my research brought up)
I'm the same as Sibbi and am using a good quality (SanDisk, same again) class 4 32GB uSD card.
And I have no problems with it at all, it keeps up with video recording (at full HD) and plays back perfectly.
I suppose the additional speed of a class 10 might make the difference if you were copying GBs of data across the USB cable when loading up the card with music or something (in which case just be patient!) but for normal use I really don't have any issues.
The sensation is a good quality expensive device, so my advice would be to use good quality memory in it for reliability, rather than take the risk lowering the reliability of the handset with lower quality accessories.
