Best Verizon Wireless phone (Opinions) - General Questions and Answers

Alright, So my brother is looking to get a Refurbished Verizon smartphone.
All he basically wants to do on it is browse the web, check email, and light gaming. His choices are the Samsung Fascinate (I have this one), Droid X, Droid Incredible, Droid 2 Global.
I want your opinion on which you think the best smartphone out of these phones is.
Thank You.

Then he doesn't need a smartphone.

what do you mean?

If your brother only wants to check email, browse the internet and game here and there why does he need a smartphone?

I can tell you right now, that 3/4 people on these forums don't NEED a smartphone. He's just jumping on the bandwagon, I don't really use a smartphone for what its intended for.
P.S. what do YOU use your smartphone for?

I just need opinions, not wether he need a smartphone or not.

If you don't mind waiting a few weeks, the HTC Trophy (Windows Phone 7) should be annouced soon. Windows Phone 7 has gotten tons of great reviews and is claimed to blow away Android and the iPhone in the performance end. It does everyting you want and even has Xbox live support (a lot of great games).
Just a thought if your not fixed on Android...

Main reason why I bought my HD2 was to mod it, watch movies, browse internet on the huge screen, listen to music, text,... but if i had to choose between the phones you listed I would go with the Fascinate. My friend has one and the screen on that thing is pretty beast.
Ohh yeah but if he could wait i would be all over the htc thunderbolt haha

Thanks for the feedback, but since he's getting a refurb those are the current choices he has, but thanks anyway

Now thats what i'm looking for, but like i said hes going for a refurb, so i doubt he would get the Thunderbolt pre-owned. (i wish opon a star)

Anyone else want to share their opinions or should I just tell him to get a Fascinate?

I say Fascinate. It will do everything he wants with it still being stock.

would the phone choice be dependent upon who he has as a carrier? I like my evo, and Droid Incredible and my son has an Evo Shift he really likes. My son did have a Samsung Epic that he did NOT like.

All of the aforementioned phones will do exactly what your brother wants out of his phone, whether it be smart or not. However, out of past experiences, I would say the Droid OS is pretty stable, and becomes even better when flashed

Anyone ditched the iphone4 for the NS?

Just as the title says really, interested to know if any of you have dropped your iPhone4 in favour of the Nexus S and if so are you happy with your choice?
I have a reason for asking this and it's for neither iPhone or Nexus bashing purposes
My brother did. He is loving the NS.
Sent from my Nexus S
I did. Reasons: tmobile promo data plan 1500 min, unl texts and data for 80.00 month.
Also love android. That being said, I miss media features and games of iOS. Also things I hate about att is the fact that you can't download a file bigger than 10 mb olvia 3g or the fact that youtube quality suck on 3g. And all of that after fork out 30 dollars a month. On t mobile you don't have any of those restrictions and you pay the same.
I decided to vote with my wallet ant give my money to tmobile ans google/ samsung.
Like I said, I really miss ios media features but I'm trying to live without ios. I understand that my reqsoning has more to do with carrier itslef rather than iphone 4, but all those things I mentioned above as a whole made me switch to nexus s and tmobile.

I did. Between the plan price and gingerbread I can say I'm totally satisfied.

I switched over from iPhone 4 and Rogers (kinda like ATT even in terms of pricing) to the Nexus S on Mobilicity (40$ unlimited everything plan) but I kinda wish I hadn't now. Main reason is that I used to use FaceTime ALL THE TIME on my iPhone 4 and expected Google to back the Nexus S up with some kinda of video chat but they didnt and Tango is lacking...
may not be the same thing, but a friend of mine has an iPhone4 and i let him play around with my phone for a lil and he loves it, wishes he could switch
Thanks all, reason I ask is that I was considering going the other way! IPhone as stock would be a definite no but a jailbroken iPhone is another ball game.
Carrier aside, I'm buying sim free so its the £430 Nexus S I currently have or return and buy the £500 iPhone 4.
Really can't make up my mind!
why do you need to ask other people to give you an oppinon, im sure you can formulate your own.

Please don't get defensive just because I mentioned I MAY prefer the iPhone 4.
I'm not asking for anyone's opinion on whether I should switch, I'm asking those that HAVE switched (albeit the other way) if they are happy with their decisions.

Im not getting offended, ive owned iPhones in the past, but what im saying is that, your asking people if they have switched and what reasons, everyone has there own opinion on the devices, why not formulate your own,
there reasons/opinions may not reflect how you feel. Chances are if your debating on switching thats enough of a reason to go and get yourself a iPhone
I did and love it. I was expecting to miss the fluidity of iOS, but Gingerbread has surprised me despite the improvements I knew it had made in this area.

No, I am asking people if they have switched and if they are happy that they did so, I'm not asking for (or interested in) reasons and I am not asking specifically for opinions of either device.
Most people who have replied to this thread so far have understood my question, thankfully.
The Nexus S is a great device and I have barely touched my laptop in the time I have had it. The iPhone also has its merits and like anything its all swings and roundabouts!

Fascinating. Obviously, you have friends and family with Mac's but you are the first person I've read that uses FT all the time. You came to rely on it that much?
I switched from iphone 3g to ns, and am living it.theres nothing major that I could on iphone that I can't do on ns. internationalization support (japanese) ime sucks on android, you have to rely on 3rd party support, but otherwise I'm very happy. love the notifications and tight google integration.

I just got the NS as my first smartphone after reading about various devices for a while (and not having a new phone in like 4 years), and so far I'm just stunned by the transition from my old dumbphone. My final choice was between the iPhone and the NS, as I see both as being comparatively high end phones for the two OS's. A buddy of mine has the iPhone 4, which I played around with for a while, but I ultimately went with the NS because the general user experience doesn't feel so controlled. That said, as a smartphone newbie, I think they're both really impressive devices.
Also, my old carrier was ATT, and they were starting to annoy me for various reasons.

Didn't ditch the iPhone, but ditched ATT for T-Mobile's more reasonably priced plans.

first of all. its nice to have people feedback. thats why these forum exists. sure everyone can formulate on his own. we are not stupid. try to get that. and try to understand that its a actually a smart thing to do to ask for people feedback before making your own. thats why its called feedback. maybe you can provide X Y points why you didnt or why you did switch etc. and the user find it valuable information where he agrees with you. dont act like a smart ass who knows everything.
to stay on topic. no i didnt . i had galaxy S and i sold it for iphone 4. simply because i think the ios is more polished device out of the box. with cydia its amazing phone. i play like a 2 hours at least of games on mobile these days so that was a plus for the iphone. plus the device it self as hardware look sexier in my eyes than galaxy S or nexus S " just personal, other people might not agree"
what i miss tho is the bigger screen of android 4 inch compared to 3.5.
also. i am waiting for CES, its in few days. many of the new phones are going to be annouced in that show. it will be intresting to see.
and on the another hand. this month the LG optimus 2x coming out. while i know its an LG device. it also has much superior hardware than nexus S. aka dual core processor. tegra 2 gpu from nvidia and 1080p video recording.
my advise is to you or to anyone who didnt buy the nexus S. is to wait. see whats coming, then decide. the only reason you would want a nexus S is if u want pure google experiance. and to get updates as soon as they come out " even tho this is bull****. nexus 1 was said to be also pure google experiance to get updates as soon google get them out. and yet, they still didnt get 2.3 . i assume the same thing will happen when google partner up with new company for another nexus phone and new OS. and nexus S owners have to wait for the OS to be released on their system much like what the nexus 1 users are doing. "
its nothing but a marketing crap. yay. i got 2.3....1 yay before anyone else... :/

Mate, if i were you, i would hold of getting a new phone till the dual cores are announced in Feb. they will be the new generation of MOBILES.
While I agree with olyloh, I will say this. My mom just got an hd7 yesterday, and I've had an evo since july, not the same as as droid but still an android.
Now, the hd7, is flat out gorgeous. Everything about it is nice. The body, the screen, even the ui. Some people may not like the simplistic nature of it,but I love it. Myphone is setup the similarly. Five dock icons, and that's it. Very simple and clean.
All that being said,I loooove the freedom and customization that android allows. And even more so if you root it. Im running cm6 on my evo now, and wouldbt change unless I had too.
Ultimately, I would wait though. If the new phones come out, and you don't like em, you can still get an hd7 or droid 2. You've really got nothing to lose.

I must say, I still love this phone!

I've had this phone since it came out in November and usually me being the tech whore that I am would get bored really quick and lust for the next big thing. As of now, I'm still loving this phone. I've rooted, on CM7, configured my screens the way I like it and sometimes I notice me touching and holding the phone just for the sake of it. Could this finally be love?? I feel like I just found a great girl and stopped going out trying to get with club chicks. lol!
Even when I go to the tech sites and checking out the new phones coming out in Barcelona, I'm like meh, I got a good "girl" at home, I'm not lusting after them. Damn, I must be getting old! hahahaha!
Yeah I said the same thing. Why did sense have so many features from espresso with the sliding bars and such only phone I even consider was the desire s cause it reminded me of the nexus one.

i share the same love as u guys. it's simple, the device meets our needs for an internet phone, and more, once rooted. how can u not fall in love with it? if u get a fully functional one, i mean.
I love this phone too! No other phone can compare yet. I'm like you, I always go for the newest toy but I've been holding on. However, the Optimus 2x might win me over.
Normally I am looking for a new phone by now (always like the latest tech) but not so much with this phone. It might take the next mytouch to get me away from my current one. I've said this many times, this phone just works.
Same here, I've changed phones a lot recently, jumping on the newest one out. At this point though, I'm acknowledging more that this phone can do pretty much everything the newest ones out can do.
About dual cores, I say "Eh.." Higher megapixel camera? Eh.. NFC? That won't be useful until maybe late this year.
Until something groundbreaking comes out that this phone can't do or do well, I'm sticking with it.
Yeah, this phone is rockin'. Even a lot of the newer phones being announced are still below spec compared to this phone - even more so when rooted, devoid of bloat, and OCed. It'll probably take a year before this thing is made "obsolete." This and the HTC Thunderbolt are the most exciting phones right now IMO.
agreed. im so happy i got to own a good one in the end. it freakin flyes.
i love my phone....
I agree 100%. My wife often tells me I'm cheating on her with my phone, my on reply is, "Sorry babe it's the other way around, I'm cheating on my phone with you." Drives her nuts. I gave her my Vibrant and traded my HD7 to get the myTouch, and I'm not getting rid of "her" anytime soon...

As a hd7/windows phone 7 user, i say go for it
it is a great phone and much more than 2 screens and you will love the experience with it vs android
and the social networking aspect of wp7 is definitely much better then what android has to offer(unless u get a blur device)
most ppl saying no to the hd7 are biased towards android
and if it's too big, that's why they have different variations of phones

I was holding out getting the mt4g for a long time because I knew there was something better right around the corner (isn't there aways something right around the corner hah). Once I heard the rumors of the optimus 2x coming to tmobile, u knew u was right to wait. But then tmobile ran the free mt4g promotion last week. It was too good a deal to pass up, so I jumped on it. No regrets.

Win7 Phone OS is just plain boring to me coming from android there's no customization you can actually do maybe if we give the OS a year or so they'll be able to step it up and listen to the community. I get the feeling Win7 users are mostly coming from BBs.
Hmmmmmm, has anyone upgraded from a HD2?
I had a HD7 and it's just sad. No ability to customze anything.
So, I kept my HD2. I install ROMs as often as I change clothes. But, it is getting old.
I really want a Robot native device that performs well and has 4G capability.
The wife has a Vibrant and holly crap. That thing is the bigest pile of crap. I feel bad that I got it for her. It's slow, the XDA Support sucks since no one really seems to like it.
I been seeing the MyTouch 4g and it seems intersting.
Thoughts?

[Q] Best Android Smart Phone

Hi all, I just wanted to post a quick question. I'm looking to upgrade from my sad Kyocera Zio M6000 to a top of the line, best in the market, Android smart phone. I thought I was going to get the HTC Thunderbolt until I spoke with my sister who works for Verizon and she said to hold off because it's having issues right now with switching from 3G to 4G. So I wanted to check here and see what you all think right now is the best, top of the line android smart phone out there. The most powerful, can handle -ANY- games out on the market, can record HD video, has 2 way camera, all the bells and whistles and is going to last me liekly years before I even think about getting a new one. I made a mistake getting my Zio and I've been regretting it for 10 months now and I don't want to make that mistake again. I plan to play game son it, watch movies,.. everything on it .. I appreciate all your responses and thank you for your time! ")

Samsung Galaxy S 2.
there are loads of good phone out there, but it depends on what you want to do with it, as lot of people root there phone and put custom roms on there.
if i was you i would wait for something like the HTC Pyramid or if you really want a android handset then go for the Samsung Galaxy S 2, but it is upto you mate.
Best Android phone in the market: The one YOU can wait for.
Right now, Galaxy II.
Soon, stay tuned.
If playing games is important to you, though not the best, you should be getting the "Playstation Certified" Xperia Play that opens you up to those Playstation titles on top of the normal Android ones, and you get a near PSP controller that you don't get anywhere else.
Google Nexus S i think
if you can, wait for the Nexus 3
ok maybe I should have qualified this with 1 other thing, a phone I can order service for and setup this week or next. I like the idea of the Galaxy S2, but last I looked it's not out till the fall and I need to replace mine right now lol.

What are everyone's opinions of the HTC Thunderbolt? I keep considering that one as well due to the fact it seems to be the top of the line right now from Verizon. And yes Monty, I am in the US.

Well I have this one, more because of size and weight than anything else. Of course all those 4 inch 800x480 + displays and dual cores are better but are also bigger, and tend to drain battery faster.
Anyway I would love to have something in the same size as the Gio but with the "power" of Galaxy SII

[Q] Best Starter Android Device

Before anyone accuses me of not searching... I already saw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797411 and it hasn't been posted in for 2 years.
With that said, I have a handful of employees in my office here who have asked me about some of the recent Android devices that have come out.
All of them are Apple users and are self professed fanboys who admit they enjoy being spoon fed technology. BUT... they have all watched how productive I am using only my HTC Thunderbolt running ICS... something they have to use their iPhone, iPad AND Macbooks to keep up with me... even our owner asked why he never saw me on my laptop in meetings and projects like all the others were... and now they all want to capture what I have managed to do with one little device.
I know I could order some Nexus 4s and call it a day but I know that is asking for trouble with Apple users... I have already watched a few struggle and return their Galaxy Note IIs after a few days of use.
So with that in mind, and given I CANNOT spend all day every day training them on a new device, does anyone have any recommendations on a specific device that will not spook the iAdults? Or a resource like an app or website that will help them get through the basics without me shadowing them the entire time?
I am looking for simple and productive vs. a powerhouse for these guys... just something to ease them into Android before I pitch the move to a Nexus product. For now all they need is email, the Lync application and some quality video playback so I can take their iPads away. If I can make that transition smooth... I am sure I can raise their level of technology prowess and unlock them from super expensive Apple products they do not really need.
Thanks!
IMHO Nexus should be preferred because of pure vanilla experience.

I don't know, wouldn't configuring simple things for them on *any* decent Android phone work? I guess I don't personally see a big difference in usability since they're all pretty much the same, using the same exact concepts.
This is my first Android phone and I've already taught my mom - who has never had a smartphone, and doesn't really understand her computer, to use an android tablet - and she's doing fine.
If they're not willing to spend five minutes learning how to use it, it's not going to work no matter what you do. :/ My dad went from a flip phone to a high-end Android phone. It's really not that hard - they need to just be open to learning.

True any phone will be as easy as the next. But if they are coming from icrap I say go nexus because they are use to getting updates as soon as they are released. Plus aosp is extremely bare and simple. Tw or sense have a lot of bloat and crap most people don't need.

I think an HTC j butterfly , sense is very user friendly and has tons of useful widjet for work, with a great mail and tasks app, the 1080p screen will be perfect for films and other stuff, plus HTC device's screens have very similir iphone's display calibration, the 5inch will be great for e-mail and webrowsing but not too big like the note 2, expandable memory so they can easily transfer files and they get also 50gb of dropbox free space and last but not least an integretion with the 'HTC media link hd' that could help(search it yourself on Google).

I suppose the Nexus "whatever is current" would be the way to go since vanilla android shenanigans. Had an SGS3, really enjoyed it (first time I ever had a top-o-line device at the time it was at its peak). Currently have a note2, and I really do think it is a median for a smartphone/tablet. IMO, it is THAT much better than a SGS3. It functions the same as any other quality/or better android device, AND it has the s-pen and a larger screen to feel comfortable to do more with.
I have not ever been one for tablets really, as I have a laptop and decent size smartphone, the Note2 makes it even more reason to leave the tabs to everyone else. Better screen, better ppi, less costly (only buying one device vs 2).
Not to say there is much experience necessary for using a (cr)apple or ios powered device, if one is semi-capable at using it the leap to android is not that far off. Of course, things have their "getting used to" but once the power is unleashed and the people that can grasp the capabilities do, it is an amazing thing.
