Why is my 3g faster than my wifi? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all. It makes no sense. I can get over 5 mbps from 3g but never past 2.7ish on wifi. I have 10+ broadband so I would expect to see at the very least what I get on 3g!
I'm running the newest radio and cm7. I'll have to try stock to compare but is anyone else experiencing this?

the problem is with your wifi, youre not getting 10mbps. at home i get 13-15mbps on wifi, at work less than 3. its because my employers service provider throttles internet speeds at 3mbps.

jeez sorry man

I'm really trying to think of a response, without sounding like a ****.
but...you're supprised that your broadband is slow? Broadband is sooooo 2005
Most places charge the same as broadband for cable internet. As much as comcast and Cox internet can be...a hassel as far as dealing with customer service. You could pay the same amount if not cheaper depending on where you are and your provider.
I wouldn't expect much from broadband. 3G could essentially be broadband speed from a rough lookout of it. And if your broadband is slower, I'm not supprised.
Don't sweat it, just upgrade your interwebnetz

How is the problem my wifi when I can go to any of my other computers on the same network and get a full 10mbps? It's not throttled. I get a consistent 10mbps from any other device connected to my wifi.

Either.

I think the problem is the Speed Test app from the Marketplace, anyone else want to double check this by using the web browser.

Now I did this test via the Flash in the browser on speedtest.net and got these speeds. But when I used the speed test app from the marketplace I only got ~3Mbps up and down, something leads me to believe that the app is limited or bugged.

Ugh dude, 'broadband' is a general term for home internet that is higher than dial-up.
OP already says he has 10mbps+ 'broadband' at home.
Anyways OP, no idea, that's pretty weird. I have 35mbps at home with an N wireless router and my Nexus S gives me 8-11mbps.

AT&T is full of crap!!!
Wait till more than one phone is connected to the lte network and see what happens. I priced out moving my 4 lines over to verizon a few months ago, and it would have cost me $100 more per month.
I see 2.5-3.5 down and usually around 1.3 up. I'm more than happy about that. Most I've ever seen down is about 5, best upload was over 3.
I understand your point, but at least you can see that Verizon is not capping the upload speeds of TB and giving preference to iCrap users.
How can this be true? The picture clearly shows the Inspire 4G in Edge but the captions for the photo say the phone was in HSPA+?
I'm not saying that any 4G phone on AT&T can reach those LTE speeds, but the phone can pull better speeds with HSDPA, not Edge.
the makers of that app have reported problems in reporting the correct upload speed for the thunderbolt too, so the 45 mbps is innaccurate.
besides the main reason its this fast is because of the lack of competing lte signals for the phone as it is new, and att being behind in the lte game
I think the low signal has something to do with it too. I notice sometimes when I have 1 bar, even when connected to H+ I get intolerably slow speeds. But that pic is funny, good point with the Edge and the comment haha.

With 5 bars and H+ connected I get about 2 - 2.5 mb/s down and 320 kb/s up. Still, that's lousy compared to Verizon's 4g.

Hi, here in Puerto Rico My best speed was 4.6 Down 1.8 Up...
Thats good for me!!!
I love Inspire
Go into the Thunderbolt threads. The speedtest app can't measure correctly for LTE. When they go to speakeasy in the web browser they're pulling about the same speeds as us.
Sent from my Gingerbreaded Inspire using XDA Premium App
I had a chance to play with a buddy's phone for a few hours and the phone itself seemed slower whenever I pulled up a list, such as apps or pictures. Of course, his phone hasn't been rooted yet, so there may be some untapped potential.
Nice thing about the Inspire is the huge dev community due to Desire HD ROMs being compatible. Thunderbolt is different enough that they will most likely be starting from scratch.
ATT 4G is only HSPA+ not lte so it cant get speeds comparable
Update from the article:
"We've been told by Ookla that the Thunderbolt's massive send buffer is responsible for the erroneously high uplink speeds -- they've got a fix in the works and it'll be available as an update to the Speedtest.net app soon."
I personally don't want to pay $150 for a front-facing camera. I'll stick with my $99 Inspire.

i get about 7mbps occasionally. that's about the theoretical hspa speed so yeah i have the early stages of faux-g. i dont think they have the 21mbps backhaul yet just, the 14mbps backhaul. could be wrong but my att reps are saying that 4g isnt fully implimented.

You probably mean 5.2 down and 1.3 up.
I'm in the Tampa, FL area. I'm getting 5+ down and 1-2 up pretty regularly in my area. I'm happy...it's beats the crap out of my old T-Mobile BS. More importantly, the coverage is WAY better.
Yes where do you all live? Where can I get these speeds?
Does anyone know if the icon in the task bar actually reflects what type of tower you are connected to? i.e. will it say "3G" if you are connected to a non-"enhanced backhaul" tower? Mine always shows the "H+" icon, and my speeds have ranged from 1.5Mbps to 8Mbps.
Well it shouldn't. Hspa+ should be available everywhere hspa was, and that's att's entire 3g network. So anywhere you got 3g you should get hspa+. That doesn't mean the tower can supply data speeds in the range of hspa+ 7mbit to 21mbit. The speed to the tower is being called "backhaul"
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
That's what I was asking - if the H+ indicated the tower was upgraded or if it just shows H+ always. I had hoped for the former but expected the latter.
the h+ is only the cell technology used between the phone and the tower, and all 3g towers are upgraded to use hspa+, but this doesnt indicate the towers connection to the network, so even if the tower can only supply 0.0000001mbit, itll still say h+. the only way to know what you can get from your area is to look at your actual speeds.
Just hit 11.47 down and 1.64 up out here in NYC. Pretty good if you ask me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Thanks, that answers my question. I was just hoping for an easy way to know which areas were upgraded, since I assume that even with an upgraded tower it's possible to see speeds below 7Mbps and therefore it wouldn't be cut and dried. I've only seen 7+ speeds in one spot so far (at work), I see more in the 2 to 4Mbps range so I guess a lot of my area is not upgraded.
I am very envious. We are supposed to be getting it in the next month. Of course by then we won't have the free tethering anymore.

i am getting some truly amazing speeds right now. to get this on verizon, id have to have a phone twice as thick with a fraction of the battery life. im still convinced that att (atleast in houston) is the best network to be on.
if you look at the graph, it did blip over 14mbit before ending at 13.5
Nothing here in King of Prussia, PA (Philly suburb) to even match those speeds
Getting an abysmal 1300 kbps in download and a miserly 760 kbps in upload.
The best I've gotten is 6/2.
I'm disappointed in the "4G" to say the least.
Hopefully that changes.

[Q] Verizon 4G LTE Speeds in New York City, NY

Hey XDA,
I want to start by saying I have searched XDA and have not found a thread with this particular information.
I have noticed that my 4G LTE speeds have slowed down quite a bit since March when the Thunderbolt was first released. During the first few days of having the phone I would never see speeds lower than 25Mbps. Lately I have only been reaching somewhere between 7-11Mbps.
Are other people in NYC experiencing this "throttling" of speed? Could it be due to the fact that the 4G towers are now saturated with more subscribers since there are now three 4G phones and more wireless usb cards/sticks?
I must also say that I am now on the MR2 (official) radio and I am running CM7 RC1.2. I don't believe it is a ROM issue since I can sometimes peak at speeds of 26Mbps but I won't sustain them.
I'm posting a poll to see what speeds people are experiencing. I hope this thread is useful to some.
If its a sustained issue, then I would venture to guess that indeed the towers are more saturated. Being in a huge metropolitan area like NYC, that wouldn't surprise me.
Your ROM shouldn't affect your LTE speed.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Yeah that's one possibility I imagined. I notice that I get higher speeds during "off-peak" hours, but I never reach that 30Mbps I used to reach on day one.
Nonetheless, I still think Verizon LTE blows the competitors when it comes to speed here in NYC.
Oh yeah. Fastest network hands down. No one else comes close to Verizon's LTE speeds. Even at 15 mb/s...
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Verizon's LTE speed has always been advertised as 5-12mbps. The higher speeds you were receiving were due to low amount of devices on their network. Expect that range to be normal with anything higher a bonus.

the app is very inconsistent but with the website check on Murray and Greenwich I pull in the typical 25+ down and 4.5+ up
Still going strong for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdF3AnNc308
Could be a tower that my apt is connected to, otherwise it's usually between 16-40mbps all over NYC including Queens and Brooklyn. Upload could be better though.
My Droid Charge has never connected to 4g at my house which is located on the east side of the botanical gardens across from Bethabraham in fact its on 1xrtt right now.
And performance is inconsistent near Fordham Plaza. 90KB/s on minute and 280KB/s the next.
well this is my mentioned average from above...ill show the speakeasy.net result upon my return to work tomorrow night

Speedtest app shows much slower on CM7
On Sense ROMs the Speedtest app showed much faster speeds (> 15Mbps), but on CM7 it looks very slow (<2 Mbps today in fact). Speakeasy.net shows much faster (37 Mbps today). I can't say which is more accurate, but I definitely don't feel like network speeds are slower on CM. Any more reliable ways to test?
I'm also in NYC.
I believe that assuming that the Speedtest App works accurately on Sense-based ROMs. I have been running CM7 for weeks now.

Just USB tether it. If you're paying for it, USB Connection Mode will give you the absolute best network performance as the phone becomes USB modem, and all the data functions on the phone itself halt and all the juice is passed to the PC.
All of this is wonderful, and I'd LOVE nothing more than to pull the trigger on Verizon LTE except for one small problem:
Assuming you get 10 Mbps download speeds, it would take you 136 minutes downloading at that speed to hit the 10GB data cap, the highest one Verizon offers.
Which by the way, cost you $80.
I'll settle for Clear Wireless at 3-4 Mbps with unlimited data for $45/month.

Well I would double check the fine print on your clear contract as I'm almost pretty sure they throttle or cut off your data past a certain point. If they don't, you're still settling for subpar speeds that most wouldn't dare consider 4G.
Good luck!
NYC Verizon LTE upper limit real world speeds:
milan03, those are some impressive numbers!
I'm running CM 7.1.1 and I seem to be experiencing the problem with AOSP ROMs when running the Speedtest.net App. what's new (or maybe not) is that I just noticed under details that my connection type is eHRPD and NOT LTE. Could this be the cause of the slower speeds received using the app?
I also tried using the stock browser and obtained a significantly higher score in the low 20's Mbps.

Can't see how renewing the connection to the cell tower can improve the signal

Yea, but the mobile signal is limited by the distance to the various cell towers. Renewing the connection isn't going to boost the signal or magically make that distance any shorter, it'll simply refresh/renew it.
I smell serious bull**** with that app. Only thing I don't understand is the number of reviews.

But what intrigued me was the number of "5" ratings. Maybe it really does do something.
I might try it out this weekend. I always have slow data on HSPA+. On my Rezound with LTE I could get between 10 to 15 average down at home (boondocks) and in the city would easy hit 25+ When I was in the mall one day I scored 45 down. Thats not joke!
I miss my LTE and I know that HSPA+ will never hit speeds like that I am still under-enthused with AT&T's speeds. I was really hoping to get the 10Megs but I am waffling at 1.5 to 3megs down
Also let it be known I am on the 1.85 Radios. I have heard a lot of good things about the 1.88 so I might give that a shot this weekend too. However, I do get a solid signal so I cant complain tooooo much!

Testing
I dont have time to test this over a whole day because I have work and in my free time I am playing with Scott's cleanROM. But did a couple of tests on this this morning using speedtest.
My setup is:
AT&T HTC One X (Obviously)
CleanROM 2.6 Standard Edition
Kernal: 3.0.8-01158
Build Number 1.85.502.3
Baseband version: 0.17.32.09.12 (Is this the radio?)
Sitting at the same spot with my phone inhand in midtown NYC I was on LTE with a network strength of:
RSP (dBm): -70
RSRQ(dB): -7
I ran speedtest without the app 5x on two different servers
Secaucus
Download Average: 12.91 MBsp
Upload Average: 13.628
Ping Average: 49.6
New York
Download Average: 12.72 mbsp
Upload Average: 14.16
Ping Average: 49
Then installed and ran the app and did the same process with speedtest
Secaucus
Download Average: 12.72 MBsp
Upload Average: 14.65
Ping Average: 50.4
New York
Download Average: 13.34 mbsp
Upload Average: 14.93
Ping Average: 50.2
This app made be consistently get a better upload speed (not by much) and the download speeds were far more volatile IMO I didnt see enough to keep the app. But then again im a noob :/
Deleting the app now to get back to CleanROM 2.6 fun

That download speed is about what I average on AT&T's LTE network but my upload is usually at least double that. I've hit over 60Mbps down numerous times. I'm in the metro Atlanta area so I'm not sure if it's that good everywhere.
I had thought about trying this app out before because I used to lose LTE signal when I got by my house but with the newer radio I get 3 bars of LTE now. I also live about 50 miles north of Atlanta. Needless to say, I'm very impressed with the distance their LTE signal reaches to.

Damn, that has got to suck being that slow!! I have Internet in my house that usually always gets over 120Mbps mainly because my server needs really high speeds to keep up with the demand..
I would of left sprint along time Ago if i didn't have internet at home.

Where it is actually at T-Mobile is very fast as well. But similar to sprint you could go a few blocks away and be roaming. Or at least wishing you were.
So I guess the conclusion is: Sprint surprises some, disappoints most.
I ****ing hate when my phone shows me good LTE service yet it STILL doesn't load anything..... I mean the service is WORLDS better than it was when I signed up in 2006 but it really pisses me off sometimes.

You know we are all on sprint because the unlimited data plans are the cheapest in town.
I travel fulltime and I can say its nice when you are in NYC and can pull 80mb down. Not so nice when you are driving across South Dakota or New Mexico and all you have is roaming.
Overall the best coverage I've seen across the contiguous USA is on the GSM network (ATT) and the best data bandwidth has been LTE over CDMA with Verizon having the most consistent coverage.
The technology is changing faster than anyone can keep up with it though. If your bandwidth sucks now just wait a year. It might not be the fastest but it should get better.

Luckily I am on Long Island so I get pretty decent coverage most places but sometimes it is spotty. Like someone else said, standing over here it is great but go across the street and it is non-existent. Sprint really shot itself in the foot when it went Wimax instead of LTE. They backed the wrong horse and they are only just starting to get back on track. For what I pay, and the coverage and speeds I usually get around here, I have lived with it. However, those times when it doesn't work even on Long Island, REALLY pisses me off. When I'm up on a trip in Vermont somewhere forget it. Everyone else has data coverage (at least functional) and I got nothing but that is the price I pay. I usually just turn off the cell radio as it drains the **** out of my battery.
Man sprint is stepping up finally.
