Push Email - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Push Email?
Does android have it? I'm so confused by all this. I tried doing some research and the Gmail application says they have push, yet I'm not getting push. Coming from blackberry, I need my emails. I don't need them this second but I would like them to be there when I check, not having to go into every account and refresh.
I have Background sync enable and application sync. I am using Gmail application for 4 Gmail accounts and 1 yahoo account with K-9. I am not using any background killer application.
I have simultaneously sent out multiple email to those email address and they barely get delivered. I see the emails in my mail box on yahoo.com or gmail.com and even when I try to refresh my mail boxes on my GS4G, it sometimes shows up and sometimes doesn't.
Considering I have important work emails, I would like them to get delivered. Even if they don't get delivered right away, but as long as they do. And this is making me think that its sketchy. So is there push or isn't? Or are my settings messed up?

Yes, push works, haven't had an issue with it. Try clearing your data/cache from stock recovery. You may have to resign in. Try doing 1 at a time to test.

Could being on wifi be the problem?

I am using K9 and Gmail and they are both working perfectly. Personal and business email are delivered with moments, sometimes sooner, than directly into my gmail accounts.

Wifi or not, I always get my emails right away

Hmm, I don't know what can be wrong, I woke up this morning to see about 5 new emails in my inbox but none of them on my phone.

again try a factory reset, then add 1 at a time, send yourself some test emails, see if they go tot he phone, then add another, send test emails to both, see if they go to the phone, and so on and so on.

The push/poll/sync settings aren't at all intuitive for me in K-9 mail and I'm working through them now myself (on Android for only a week now). At least as I understand it, there is a setting for poll that is independent from that for push. Both need to be set up for the account, as well as the proper set of folders associated with each. I think some of that is behind the out-of-box behavior of clicking into a folder and not having it auto-update.
It's pretty flexible, but not what I would call user friendly.
As far as I can tell, you can set each folder in an account to be 1st Class, 2nd Class, or (none selected), for each of display, push, and poll, and then set, for the account, what you display, push, and poll:
* All
* Only 1st Class
* 1st and 2nd Class
* All except 2nd class
(display, push, and pull class are independent of each other for each folder)
I'm trying to figure out a "magic decoder ring" so I can wrap my head around it all.

Gmail Exhange via ActiveSync; does yours work yet?

As of Oct 16th I am still unable to get solid performance out of Gmail Exchange with ActiveSync.
There are literally hundreds of complaints across the web detailing the same issues I am having but I don't hear people saying much on these forums.
Does your ActiveSync/Exchange Gmail mail work properly? Does it work well? If so what ROM are you using?
nope does not work for me.
i get
the server you are attempting to synchonizw with is either not and exchange server etc.
anyone else??
It's works for me after i changes my user name to [email protected] instead of [email protected]
I'm using touch pro latest official rom.
Yeah you make it [email protected] rather than [email protected]
Mine is working flawlessly. I am running EnergyRom 10/14. I had the biggest pain in the ass of a time trying to set it up a couple weeks ago until I stumbled across a thread somewhere and BLAM!!! it started working.
here is what you need to do.
1.) when you enter your email address in the first step make sure it is all lower case. ie.. [email protected]
2.) make sure you uncheck the option to obtain server info automatically
3.) in the exchange address use m.google.com (case sensitive)
4.) now enter email address in all CAPS ie.. [email protected]
4.1) make sure your password is "exactly" as you would loggin in online. (case sensitive)
5.) make sure that you uncheck "tasks" and "texts" as they are not currently supported by GoogleSync.
5.1) PS> not sure if this helped me but when selecting what I want to sync I went into setting for "email" and change them to this
Download the past---- ALL
Message Format----HTML
Download size limit----Entire Message
Dont check Include file attachments.
6.) Hit finish and watch the magic happen.
Also under "Menu > Schedule" make sure that the Sync During Peak times and Off-Peak time are set to " As items arrive"
Hope this helps!
ALSO!!! make sure that you are already set up on Google Calender!! if not you are going to error out...
There were problems with it a couple of weeks ago, and it stopped working for me. I tried everything I could think of but couldn't get it working again. Then I deleted the account and reinput all settings and lo and behold it started working again and has worked perfectly ever since.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. My setup was identical to yours (all 15 times I have setup, resetup, etc) but I still have the same issues.
Contacts sync just fine (Confirmation that server address, email address, login info, SSL, etc are setup fine.)
The folders within the pOutlook/Gmail show up but nothing is in my inbox.
I can even send a test message from the phone with the gmail account, receive it at my gmail imap on a laptop or via the web, but not on the phone.
I can see those damn folders and send email, wtf.
Maybe I need to turn off IMAP on the Gmail account?
I was already set up to sync with google calendar, and that worked just fine.
I added my gmail to it, and it got all the messages, and even though I DID have include file attachments, it didn't actually get any attachments, or even show that an attachment was available to click.. so it's basically worthless.
back to checking every 15 minutes I guess.
at least with hotmail you can have it set to as it arrives.
using NFSFANs B13 ROM, gotta update to B14 still

I am using the stock Sprint HTC Touch Pro ROM
There are many bugs and occasional lags of up to a couple of hours. Here are the bugs I have encountered:
Attachments aren't delivered
Calendar does not sync existing items from phone to Google, only ones added
Contacts are missing the category data
Well fixed mine not working. All i changed from the other settings for for it not to sync text messages and tasks and it now works I think !
Mine still doesn't work, no matter what shenanigans I try. I gave up, went back to IMAP, Outlook for contacts and usb/bt sync. I push my contacts to gmail via a silly file once in a while.
Oh well, at least Imap keeps things organized between all my email.
Gmail sync
I tried many different settings, but it kept telling me that there have changes on the server and it needs to start again. The only thing which made a difference, was setting the days to push as 1. It now works flawlessly, and has worked for a complete week. (I did not try syncing folders yet) I use it only for inbox notification, as the reply address cannot be changed to my domain name. So I use imap for sending and Microsoft exchange for notification (or if I dont mind the reply address to state *****@gmail.com

Fetch Emails vs. Push

Hey all... noob to the forum, it's been a great resource for my new Captivate, so thanks for that...
I'm not going to start a whole battery life thread, but last night, I went to bed with a 40% battery and the device died overnight (making me late to work )..
On my iphone, I was able to significantly improve battery life by fetching emails rather than pushing them, and I would like to do the same on my Captivate... is there a way to manually set the sync options?
The only one I have found that lets me pick a time is facebook sync.
Thanks all.
You have to setup your email accounts first. There's an email icon in applications. Once you've got them setup you can go to the email app and see a list of all your email accounts...you're able to select which email account you want to to view from there. Anyways from the email app you can click the 1st button on the bottom left of your device which is the default button used to access settings for any program. From there you can select how often you want it to sync or push.
Under accounts and sync uncheck gmail, then add your gmail accounts to the regular e-mail app. Then you can set fetch. I don't believe push should really kill the battery though, by its nature, because it's not polling for information. The notification for the e-mail comes down to it as a small data packet only when it's necessary to do so as far as I know.
Generally, I like the push email. It is more efficient way for a phone. And doesn't necessary use more battery. It really depends how often you receive new emails. If you receive new emails constantly, push may use more juice. On the other hand, if you occasionally receive new emails, fetch with long intervals may save you some juice.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I receive about 10-15 emails an hour...
Unfortunately, some of my accounts are on google apps, and I have to use the Gmail application... The regular mail app is not taking the IMAP or POP settings.

For Gmail using IMAP or POP, you have to enabled it first in your online GMail settings.
The only time you will see benefit from fetch email is to set your fetch period longer, e.g. once every few hours. If you're going to fetch every 15 minutes or so, you will end up use more battery juice than push.

How would fetching every 15 mins use more battery than a consistent connection.
I want it to fetch only when I open the email... I'm in front of a computer all day, and don't need my phone alerting me of an email at the same time as my computer.
push is not a consistent connection, the phone is alerted when new data is available. that is why it saves more battery

[Q] Captivate Stops Checking E-Mail. Anyone else?

Did a search and could not find a similar thread addressing this issue. If I am incorrect, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
I am currently running Assonance 5.2 and have set up Yahoo and Exchange accounts, with the phone set to check for email either every 5 minutes (for my Exchange account) or once every hour (for my Yahoo account).
I have noticed that, on a daily basis, my phone will stop checking for emails altogether even though background sync is turned on. Additionally, even when I delete emails from my phone, they remain on the server. Lastly, even though I have read an email, it still shows up as unread on the server. The phone has stopped checking at random times - on Monday, it stopped checking after 3:00 p.m.; on Tuesday and Wednesday, it stopped sometime after 6:00 p.m.; and on Thursday, it stopped checking around noon.
I have tried Improved Email and K-9, but the problem remains. As an FYI, I had the same problem even when I was running an unrooted phone that was running the stock Eclair.
Have other people encountered this issue? If so, is there a way to get the email working correctly? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Same here. I use mine for corporate and I have to say my Iphone was 10 times better when it came to email etc. Sometimes I can force a refresh....others I have to reboot. But I have missed some critical emails because they just werent syncing. I have learned to deal with it although it stinks. My email blows up during business hours, so If I havent gotten an email in ~45min, I know to check it.
I had this problem in the stock email client. Clearing the cache under the applications settings menu fixed it for me. After I had to fix it this way for about the 3rd time, I switched to K9 mail and havent had a problem since. I have hotmail, POP and Gmail accounts.
Im stock, by the way.
sent from my Captivate
Thanks for both of your replies. I'm glad (sort of) to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem.
@mike parsons - I am in the same boat as you where I have missed critical work emails due to the phone not fetching my email. I also grudgingly agree that the iPhone mail client worked much better. The only thing I could do to get the email on the Captivate working again was to restart the phone. Even then, I sometimes had to restart 2-3 times before the emails were sent to the phone.
I had this issue with stock Eclair 2.1 on my Rogers sourced Captivate SGH-I896 running Eclair 2.1-update 1.
It happened rarely with POP accounts, never with G-Mail, but with Exchange ActiveSync it was disastrous. I set up and configured this, and with my old Windows Phone 6.0 it did this maybe five times in 18 months.
During the off-time between Christmas and New Years it only received e-mail properly on ActiveSync two days out of eight. I didn't get much e-mail during that time either.
Sometimes it helps if I manually changed it from automatic (push) to every 15 minutes and hit "refresh" but most often it did not. The only fix was to remove the ActiveSync account and re-establish it, and it would work fine for a week or so until it started doing this again.
Another thing that seemingly affected it, was how much e-mail I would sync. It would happen quicker if I sync'd the last month of e-mail versus let's say one or two weeks.
I had run Cognition 2.3B7 without a hitch for about a week and a half and it never happened.
I just upgraded to the stock Froyo 2.2 and I'm hoping this isn't an issue with the upgraded client.
Use k9 mail. This is lots better than stock.
@diablo009 - thank you for the suggestion. However, I had the exact same problem using K9, so I am not sure what else I can try.

Did u try configuring k9 to fetch mails at intervals? It would be "folder poll frequency" under account settings. Want to see if u did this too.
Also, some apps need "background data" to be enabled in settings. Is that set? Same question about "auto-sync" being turned on.

Thanks for the suggestions - yes, I had tried different folder poll frequencies on K9 - 1 minute, 5, minutes, 15, minutes, and so on. However, there are still times when I won't receive an email for hours even though K9 is set to poll much more frequently. I will only learn of this when I check my mail through my home or work computer. In fact, on occasions like this (when I learn that phone hasn't downloaded the new messages), I will go into K9 (or the email app) and hit either refresh or check mail. Even in these situations, the new mail won't show up on the phone until I restart the phone completely. Again, I had this problem both on stock Eclair as well as on Assonance 5.2.
Also, I had enabled "sync server deletions" on K9, but messages still don't consistently get deleted from the server.
Lastly, background sync and auto sync are both enabled in settings.

Anybody else's native Gmail App delayed in receiving emails?

I mentioned this in the other thread about push, but that thread seems to be primarily directed at the Mail application.
In the native Gmail app, I typically see delays of 5-15 minutes from the time an email shows up on my computer screen and the time my phone eventually notifies me that it received the email. Every now and then I will get the email on my phone at about the same time that it shows up on my computer screen, but a vast majority of the time it takes 5-15 minutes. On one occasion, my phone did not get it for over an hour.
Anybody else having this problem? You would probably only notice it if you sit at a computer with your Gmail open in a web browser constantly. I see that I get an email in my browser window, and I purposefully do not open it or touch it just to see how long it will take my phone to notify me.
This occurs on both wifi and LTE.
I've previously had several Android phones and never had this issue. Sync is turned on, data on, ETC. If there are any settings I might not be thinking of, please let me know, but as far as I know the Gmail app itself doesn't have any settings for push/pull.
Edit: I will also add that, while I'm waiting to receive it on my phone, if I go into the Gmail app, the message is not there. If I manually refresh, it then shows up. So this is not merely a notifications problem -- the native Gmail app is actually failing to receive emails in a timely manner.
I had definitely noticed this in the first week or so of having the phone, but now that it's been about two and a half weeks, the GMail seems to be fine. Maybe I just got used to it, but I'll try and monitor it for a few days and report back here.

I believe most of us believe it's a bug in the OS.
My Gmail setup in the Gmail app or Email app gets the same random delays. I've tested it a day with the Gmail app and had delays. The very next day I removed it and tried the Email app and it still had delays.
I personally think it's gmail email related since my work email so far has been working 100% in the Email app.
Either way, there's no definite answer other than we all know the phone has email delay problems.

lol the Email app's a whole other story. At least for my ActiveSync Exchange account at work. Even with the syncing set to "push," my emails don't always come in right away. Actually the "Smart Sync" setting seems to work better (again, maybe it's in my head, I'll have to do more testing), as long as I "train" my phone to realize that I'm using the email app constantly throughout the day.

Email constant connection error

My email seems to be working fine. I can send and receive email and view the contents of my various folders. But, it seems like every time it syncs (e. g. Every time I send an email), it displays an error message saying it had a connection error. As shown in the attached screen shot.
I went into Settings / Accounts. I only have one email account and it's an Exchange Activesync account. It is set to sync mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks. I toggled the sync for each one off and then back on. After I turned each one back on, that thing would sync and then display this same error.
Any idea what's going on?
I have had this problem also, but only when I was losing a weak wifi signal, or I was VPN'd to my work network. Either of those scenario's playing out with you?

Idon't think so. Settings shows WiFi signal as Strong. And I'm not VPNed.
This happened to me today too. The same connection error, but with g-mail. I had to clear the cache and data of the stock e-mail app. Then, when I restarted the e- mail app, l had to re-enter my account info. Worked fine after that.

I've gotten that pop-up randomly from day one on my Exchange account. It's never impacted what the e-mail client's actually doing. I've even gotten it while I'm watching a ton of e-mails download properly like when re-connecting after a plane flight. So I'm treating it as a false alarm until proven otherwise. Hopefully an update makes it go away.

My connection error was constant but I was only getting it from the stock e-mail app. I could reproduce it consistently by touching the refresh icon. But, when I opened the g-mail app, it could access everything fine. The error wouldn't stop until I reset everything and re-entered all the account info.
Stock email has problems with exchange server. Mine was having problems with office 365. it happens to all sgs ii, iii and note 10.1 ics versions. You have to clear contacts auto complete list. After that it was working ok with emails but Splaner is still not syncing well, only one way from server to device.
To empty auto complete list, go to file, option, email, email sending, empty auto complete...in office 2010.

I had a problem with my email the other day and ended up doing a factory reset and reinstalling all my apps, etc.. I didn't have this error before that happened.
I will try clearing the app's cache, etc. and re-setting up my email.
Thanks, guys.
ps. my problem the other day was that I could not compose a new email message (including replying to a received message). That turned out to be because I had turned on Force 2D GPU rendering in Settings/Developer Options. I wish I had figured that out before doing the factory reset... *sigh* Just FYI.
Thanks again for the help. I deleted the account, Cleared data and cache, rebooted, re-created the account, and now all seems well.

I have this error as well. It does not seem to impact emails, but I have problems with S-Planner not displaying events. I can sync events with S-Planner both ways, but some events just won't display in S-Planner. I have not yet found a common cause or a way to reproduce a non-syncing event.
[edit]
Ok, I went ahead and deleted the account and added it back again. For now, it syncs alright, let's see how it goes.
I think what I did different this time was to create an Active Sync Account from the start, whereas the first time around I selected "Email" and then Active Sync at the prompt when you go into manual setup. Could this make the difference, how exactly did you guys set up your accounts?
Now I only have one other problem: when I first added the account, the Exchange events in S-Planner were a nice green, but this time they are kind of a pastel shade pink, which I don't like at all. Can you change the color anywhere?
