hey all,
I finally got my self a Nexus S, but still have my Nexus One(that I still love) and I have a couple of questions that Im hopping you guys can point me in the right direction.
I have spent most of yesterday looking for threads on this and unable to get what im looking for.
1). Were do i find an updated Radio for the Nexus S
2). Looking for a rooted 2.3.3 update
the reason I have asked is because on the N1 thread there is a simple step by step guide to update the Radio, Hboot and 2.3.3 rooted updated, and was easy to do.
please help.
thanks & sorry if there is a thread that i missed
Here is a link to the thread with updated radio from CWM.

tried both and they say installing and then bad
Check to see if the baseband was updated in about phone. Also make sure you are using Install Zip from SD Card and navigating to the file, also check the md5 to make sure it downloaded correctly.

To install 2.3.3 you MUST HAVE A 2.3.3 Compatible Kernel Running on 2.3.2 !
Grab them from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936219
Then install 2.3.3 and radio's
The baseband on the phone is I9020XXJK8

I didn't know about that. I flashed the kb1 radio.img through fastboot on CM7 RC1 with netarchy 1.2.4 (not 2.3.3 compatible). I flashed the kb3 radio from the thread I linked and it updated fine.
oK how do i update to 2.3.3 rooted
1. Make sure you phone is rooted
2. Download a comptable kernel for 2.3.3
3. Flash the new kernal using recovery ( when phone is off hold volume up key and power key together)
4. Download 2.3.3 rooted rom from the development thread.
5. Flash the rom from recovery.

Okay im trying to get 2.3.3 Stock rooted rom onto my phone so it can be used if CM7 goes tits up on me.
I currently have 2.3.2 Rooted stock ROM as my Back up & CM7 as my main.
Every time i try and install a 2.3.3 rom / back up posted on these forums i either get a crash on the google splash screen or an Error code status 7 error ( i think this is to do with an HBOOT, a si have tryed to flat a updated Hboot prior to installing 2.3.3 )
Any ideas guys ?
Did you check this post? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968403 The rooted 2.3.3 rom from that post worked for me... I cleared cache's etc... before install.
You try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971690 yet?
I tryed both of these methods i have tryed i think 4 diffrent Rooted and 2 diffrent Non rooted roms of 2.3.3
i can get it to the google lock screen or the nexus x bootscreen and the google screen stays there or the animated nexus logo just constantly loops or i just get error specified 7.
No roms of 2.3.3 will load, from either CWM 3.0.0.5 / Recovery.
System Info :
Baseband : I9020XXKB1 ( 2.3.3 Baseband )
Kernal Ver : 2.6.35.7-gc15177c
Mod : CM7-RC1-NS
Kernal : Og-Nexus-CM7-ogext4-1.2.1 ( Voodoo )
Build : GRH78C ( Yes i have been using compatible ROM updates for 78c )

I see the problem. Your kernel (not kernal) is outdated. You're using 1.2.1 with Voodoo which doesn't support Android 2.3.3.
That could be the reason why it isn't booting, try flashing 2.3.3 by Master and then flash netarchy's 2.3.3 compatible kernel along with it.

No problem. Hope it works out, that's why some members (including myself) include their phone setups in their signature because it could play a pretty significant factor into problem solving that is usually overlooked.
Before the 2.3.3 update the screen on my Nexus S was actually fairly accurate. I did not have any of the blue color tint problems reported by some, with the new update the color temperature is visibly yellow. It seems that a lot of the SuperOMOLED screens are different sadly even when running the Star Field live wallpaper I can see a yellow tint. Is there any way to downgrade back to Gingerbread 2.3.2
Thanks

yes that is another way of reverting back to 2.3.2, but that update SHOULD work.
What recovery do you have? If you're using clockwork, MAKE SURE you are flashing
98f3836cef9e.signed-soju-GRI40-from-GRH78C.98f3836c.zip not update.zip.
to do this.. install .zip from sdcard -- just make sure it isnt update.zip
It's very possible that you renamed the 2.3.3 .zip to update.zip and you just simply reflashed update.zip which is 2.3.3
if you're on stock recovery, then mount the USB and delete update.zip and rename 98f3836cef9e.signed-soju-GRI40-from-GRH78C.98f3836c.zip to update.zip then flash
I'm running a stock Nexus S not rooted yet. I did delete the old update.zip and replaced it with your link but I'm still having getting the same results. In recovery the update installs everything and I still reboot back into 2.3.3
Kernal Version is: 2.6.35.7-g1d030a7
Build: GRI40
The other alternative step is to 'fastboot oem unlock' and go through the rooting process. (or do the process of not unlocking and rooting)
- Install Clockwork Recovery
- Download Nandroid backup of 2.3.2
- Restore from the 2.3.2 backup
| OR |
Flash a 2.3.2 based ROM such as CyanogenMod7 RC1 (or Nightlies), GingerS, Bionix, MoDaCo, and so forth.

no problem. sorry that the 2.3.2 update didnt work out.
I would highly recommend buying Titanium Backup pro or using MyBackUp (Never used this) to backup your apps as you become a flashaholic.
Whenever you flash new ROMs and wipe.. you'll lose your apps but those two apps I mentioned above will save them.
BTW. when you do fastboot oem unlock, your stuff are going to be wiped so make sure you back them up!

I just did a quick Google search on the file you posted and I think its for the 2.3.3 update

Why would the file named "GRI40-from-GRH78C" downgrade you from 2.3.3 to 2.3.2? That's the update file that takes you TO 2.3.3 (aka GRI40) FROM 2.3.2 (aka GRH78C).
Is the one you're recommending modded in some way? If so, it should be renamed to avoid confusion. If not, it's not the right thing to do to accomplish a revert from 2.3.3 to 2.3.2 as requested from the OP.
I don't think it's the right file to downgrade. It is the one upgrade to 2.3.3 from 2.3.2.

It's not. He's confused. The "98f3836cef9e.signed-soju-GRI40-from-GRH78C.98f3836c.zip" is definitely the NEW OTA to take you to 2.3.3 from 2.3.3. It has the new bootloader in it and PATCHES from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3. It is 21mb in size and only includes patches.
hmm so how to downgrade to 2.3.2 if I don't have (and hopefully don't have to) unlock bootloader?
i'm planning to downgrade to 2.3.2, then boot into clockwork mode, and use my previous 2.3.2 nandroid backup..
my previous 2.3.2 works fine, no random reboot and at least the colour is pleasant to my eyes..
I'm pretty sure I've devised a method to revert back to 2.3.2 correctly, but I haven't tested it yet and you may or may not need to root your device, depending on what you want backed up.
If you're on 2.3.3 and would like to back everything up as best you can, I advise that you first root, install Titanium Backup, and run.
Next, use the info from this thread to use Odin to revert your Nexus S back to 2.3.1. That thread also includes instructions on how to flash the radio as well to get it truly back to 2.3.1.
After that, you can grab the manual update.zip for 2.3.2 from this link.
From there, if you had previously rooted and backed up your apps and data, you can root again and use Titanium Backup to restore everything.
Hope this helps.
It does sound like the update posted is 2.3.3 from 2.3.2 if you ask me, i guess there may be other revisions too, or will be (from 2.3.1 to 2.3.3 etc..)
For you colour issues (not something i have i guess i jsut have a good LED screen, but i did have the reboots (now fixed) i would suggest:
Keep 2.3.3 (its very smooth)
Install Netarchy cfs 2.3.3 compat kernel
Install Voodoo App from Market
Choose Voodoo's colour profile in the app
I think with that you may be able to keep your update and have the colours you want?
Well i hope so
I have the wrong baseband version on my nexus s and now I don't have 3G anymore. I tried to go back to stock rom but it won't let me. Is there a way to go back to the original baseband sttings because I am now on I9020A instead of I9023. When I tries to flash the stpck rom it didn't go past the verifications becaise it thinks that this is a I9020A instead of a i9023.
i think we have the same problem.
in bootloader i see
BOOTLOADER VERSION - I9020XXKL1
BASEBAND - I9020XXKI1
my nexus is i9023 not i9020! how can i change it?
Don't bother. It's normal. Both the phones have the same baseband.

I went through the same problem not more than a week ago. The problem is your using stock recovery. So just flash a custom recovery like cwm and then flash a stock rom. Then install a custom rom right after. You will loose cwm again after this because you just flashed a stock rom so just download rom manager and flash cwm with it. All the best mate.

I already have cwm installed but when i try to install a stock 2.3.6 rom the installation is abborted; status 7. Also if I try to install 2.3.3 or 4.0.3 it gives me that error
Do you have the latest version of cwm?
The baseband XXKI1 is fine for I9023 regardless if it says I9020 or not, I9023 and I9020T are the same.
I9020A needs a different radio.
I have the latest cwm 5.0.2.0 but I have baseband I9020AUCKF1. I hate being on gprs
You have the wrong radio.
You said your phone is a I9023 so you need XXKF1 or XXKI1
Flash it through cwm
Do you have a link of the radios? I don't want to brick my phone again :S
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884
Everything you need is here!
Look through the android development forum for the new radio XXKI1 but the XXKF1 radio in the link I gave you will do fine!
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396532
This is for the XXKI1 radio.
I recommend you uprooted your phone, find stock i9020a rom and then installing it... Then you can root it again or something...

Do NOT do this.
The phone is an I9023.
Try flash the radios and see if that works, it may just be a corrupted file PR something, reflash and see how that goes.
Then IF that doesn't work try flash gb stock rom for I9023, 2.3.6 grk39f PR something like that bit try the radio first.
Hey guys,
I been tracking at this great site for a while. I realized that there was a upgrade for MT4GS around the time that I got my phone(End of 2011). I saw some posts said that the upgrade had patched something so we can't root the phone with revolutionary method.
My question is is there any way to check and see if revolutionary method still work for my phone?
Software information
Android Version
2.3.4
Software Number
1.28.531.9
I think these information might help to determine.
Yep, Revolutionary will work for you.
Thank you !
Assuming it works, use revolutionary method and then use rom manager to update your clockwork mod to 5.0.2.7

rom manager... I guess I need some research on that. b/c I heard that there is some issues with the older clockwork mod.
Just a guess based on what I read in the past. Is rom manager an app?
Thank you!
Yep, Rom Manager is an app. You can flash superuser with an older version of CWM, then you will be rooted and can go straight to the market and download Rom Manager and use it to flash CWM 5.0.2.7.
Are the changes from 4.0.0.9 important enough to update?

4.0.0.9 is an upgrade that solves some charging issues present in 4.0.0.8 that is installed by revolutionary.
They are both unofficial clockworkmod versions.
5.0.2.7 is the only official version of the recovery for our device, and it's worth updating. The other versions were something to get us by until an official one was released for our device - and they did a great job while we were waiting.
Rom Manager is an app you can find in the market. Here is a link:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&feature=search_result
Once you have root on your device, just install clockworkmod through Rom manager. It doesn't matter what recovery you currently have, whether it's stock or one of the custom clockworkmods, Rom Manager will just replace whatever is there. But you need root.
Hello,
I am still relatively new to a lot of android stuff here. I have tried to search for similar problems, but I did not find detailed explanations that I could use to figure out what went wrong in my case.
I recently started to try custom ROMs. I have NVFlashed CWM-Based Recovery 5.0.2.8 and rooted my phone, and then I followed the instruction to flash the ROM of Bionix Reloaded v1.4.1 FINAL, as explained here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400620
Everything runs well in Bionix, but it's on Android version 2.3.3, which doesn't work with the baseband (phone call audio has nothing but clicking sounds), which led me to follow the instruction here to update to V21y firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601918
After I did that, the phone audio works now, but this basically gave me back a stock ROM with a lot of bloat.
I had read some comments in the above thread that mentioned backing up the custom ROM via CWM first, then do the V21y update, then re-NVFlash CWM and restore the custom ROM via CWM. I tried this, but it brought me back to the exact same Bionix on version 2.3.3, with the same phone audio problem. Did I misunderstand or do something wrong here? Or is there another way to do it? Please pardon my inexperience and give very detailed step-by-step instruction. Thank you.
try flash the bandwidth that says BEFORE 2012 and also download the app GetRil and make sure your Ril is matching

Yes. Bionix is for older baseband and I thought it wasn't even 2.3. If you want to use Bionix with v21y you have to flash the new baseband zip file.
Based on what you described, do the following:
Follow instructions to install Bionix.
Search and download new baseband zip file.
Flash the new baseband zip file.
You should have bionix with working phone audio (but broken Bluetooth)
Alternatively you can go back to v21e and the flash bionix. No need to flash the new baseband zip file then and Bluetooth would work too.
Post results. Let me know if I am off the mark.
-- The noob says:
Believe you me... Apple suggested LG for Nexus 4
Thank for the quick response everyone. I am currently trying out CyanogenMod 7.2, in which there is no problem with the V21y issue. I like it so far, and I might not try other ROMs for a while, but when I do, I'll post the result here.

I did not know the V21y baseband thing could be flashed with a zip file, and done in a way that doesn't overwrite the existing custom ROM. When I searched, I could only find V21y zip files that are basically installing a new ROM though.
You're better off staying with cm7. You can flash something else but you'll just end up flashing back
