A couple questions for newbies - HTC Inspire 4G

So I am new to the android scene, but I am having a blast! I have just a couple of questions that I have, and I am sure that others have as well, so I figured I would compile them in this thread, then others with answers can chime in.
Q. What exactly does flashing the radio mean?
Q. What exactly does flashing a Kernel mean?
Q. When flashing a ROM, does that mean the containing ROM will flash the kernel and radio automatically?
Thats a start...

I am a newb too and I find it hard to get responses to newb ques. Let me answer to the best of my knowledge.
Flashing a radio is actually that. It's like flashing a router. The software changes and it can be a bit risky. Never have done it myself and probably won't unless I see a good reason too. ROM's like revolution don't require it.
Kernal is the boot portion of the phone. flashing it can give you the ability to overclock. Not quite sure what else as I learned this yesterday.
ROM is the operating system essentialy. I think there are some rom's out there that flash the kernal automatically but not the radio. No ROM will flash a radio
Hope that helps!

What are SSPL, HSPL and Radio?

I swear I have used the Search tool, but lots of topics have HSPL in their title, and I weren't able to find any FAQ topic talking about that.
Everybody here talks about SSPL, HSPL, how to use them and so on. The only think I understood is that to flash custom roms you need HSPL, and for official roms SSPL is "enough". Could anybody tell me something more and explain me why do we need this stuff to flash a rom and not just run a .exe on the device which could do everything automatically?
I also didn't understand what the Radio is. I thought a part of the rom which manages the GSM/3G antenna, but I think I am wrong.
Thank you in advance

okay
spl = Secondary Program Loader. Think of this in the same sense as bios on a pc. (it sets where your system boots from, intialises sub system process etc)
sspl = soft spl (this allows you to flash another spl or hardspl).
hardspl = hard spl .. basically it allows flashing of any rom. It protects you from bricking your device. If you have a bad flash it just forces the phone to load into bootloader, from where you can flash another rom using pc or storage card to get your phone working again. Using a hardspl you can flash any carrier rom without cid unlocking your device first.
Radio = you are correct about your assumption as to what a radio does .
Now if you are flashing your carriers official rom than you don't need any of this stuff but different carriers set their cid in their roms so only phones that have their cid can flash those roms ... now if you like the wwe htc rom and want to flash it onto the tilt you will first need to hardspl your device or otherwise you won't be able to flash the rom ... it will time out with an error telling you invalid vendor id.
Many thanks! Now it is much clearer! Just one more question: why do people care so much for the radio and post their radio version to their signature? Is the radio revision so important? Why is it not just part of the rom?
Thanks again!

well radio is definitely important ... i mean if you have a uncompatible radio you will loose sound, camera, connection etc on your phone. Reason people list the radio they are using is basically to let others know what radio is working for them on the rom they have. This way if someone else doesn't know which radio to use with the rom than can use the radio they have listed. Radios are location dependant. Some radios give better reception here in states while others give better reception somewhere else in the world.
Most of the time chefs will include a radio with their rom, but some leave it out so you can choose the one that works best for you. Just a keynote to keep in mind when selecting radios is that wm6.1 roms need wm6.1 radios and wm6 roms need wm6 radios. Also DO NOT flash a radio that is intended for another device i.e a rapheal radio onto a kaiser (this will brick your device). There are exceptions to this rule. Also you should get your phone security unlocked before proceeding with flashing various kinds of radios. This will save you from getting stuck with a radio that locks itself to the device (thus rendering itself unchangeable; no matter how many times you flash another radio you will be stuck with that radio) an example of this is "the radio from hell" which alot of people in the kaiser forum got stuck with and weren't able to get rid of it until "FrankenKaiser" came along.
Hope this helps.
Thank you, it does.
Another term I read is Jump SPL. What's that?
Some poeple encounter problems trying to flash hardspl, Jump spl "jump starts" the process.
(problems like the kaiser white screen issue here)
Ok, thank you all.
Now I only have to wait for the Blackstone Hard SPL.

aren't we all ... hold tight though they are close to getting it done.
How do you know that? In the placeholder topic there has been no update about the development status since a while.
WOW!!
Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to thesire and joel2009 for being so extremely nice to a newbie!!! This is probably one of the first posts I have seen where a newbie doesn't get their head bitten off for asking a question. (I don't think I've ever asked a question for that very reason! LOL)
I was searching for the answer to 'what is SSPL' because I couldn't find it in the Wiki acronyms section. What a pleasant surprise! Sorry if this steers away from the topic but I just could NOT pass over this thread without saying THANKS!!!!!!!!
You wont get flamed for asking Questions in this Forum
as for the Acronyms, try here

more here : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=FAQ#techicalJargon
my friends, you need to master the art of searching
So I actually risked to find my skin burnt by the flame?
I didn't even know that there was a wiki/knowledge base here. Well, I actually felt somthing like that, but I completely forgot about that when searching. I searched carefully indeed, but only in the forum, and since lots of topics contain the words SPL, HSPL and so on, I was unable to find relevant results.
I'll look there next time, thank you all again.

Questions on root/flashing ROMs on HTC sensation

Hi guys. I'm hoping my post hasn't broken any forum rules... but anyway, i am very new to android, and i'm still trying to read up on/learn about rooting a phone + flashing a ROM to it. I have a few questions that i'm hoping some experienced people could answer for me =]
1. Does my HTC sensation need to have a certain update before i can try archieve S-Off? (I'm on the Three network [UK] and my software number is 1.34.771.1)
2. How easy is it to brick a device? Im good with computers, and can follow instructions, but seeing as i have no past experience with android, i'm anxious to try flash new ROMs to my phone without insurance - as £500 for a new device would kill me... =P
3. When flashing a new custom ROM to my phone, what kind of 'wipe' do i need to perform? I've read a few articles, all of which say to perform different wipes.
4. I dont understand ' Radio Flashing' could someone kindly explain that to me please?
5. What exactly does CWM backup? =P
I hope i'm not wasting anyones time here, i have read through the articles for noobs, just need some clarification =]
Thanks for everyones time.

1. As long as you are on Android 2.3.3 there shouldnt be a problem. 2.3.4 donesnt have a S=off just yet, i think
2. Bricking is actually very hard to do, if u follow instructions you should be good
3. all you need to wip is the system data, cache, and i reccomend wiping the battery status too
4. Radio flashing is chaning your radio number. this is actually a very easy process. Dont worry about this, all you do is put a zip on ur sd card, and the phone does the rest.
5. ClockWork Mod backs up quite literally everytrhing. Think "Macrium Reflect" for a PC. Or a "Ghost Backup" for a PC.
6. I just added this. don worry about wasting peoples time. We are here to help each other like a community. Let me know if u have any other questions.
I am following this thread, and when u reply i will answer you again. So feel free to ask any more questions.

Thank you very much =] Think i'll give rooting a go within the next week... just want to make my sensation that much faster and improve the battery life!
If you don't mind me asking;
What exactly is a Radio number for?
I am on android 2.3.3 , just my software number seemed different to other peoples phones =P
So if i use this 'Clockwork Mod' to backup everything, once the new ROM has installed, will everything just be the same (apart from the changes on the ROM obv) such as app placements on homescreens etc. Or will i have to put everything back?
Also, say android releases 2.3.5 , im assuming i would just flash an updated ROM over the top of an older 2.3.4 ROM when it is released?
I've read through the 1st sticky a few times already, just to familiarise myself with certain words/actions =]
Finally, what is hboot =]
Thanks again for your time!

Clockwork Mod is just a recovery program to allow you to install new ROMs to your device, but most importantly, to let you backup and restore your current device configuration (like a sort of time machine). Most developers recommend Clockwork Mod (CWM) because it is so good at what it does. If anything fails, and you need to use your phone in a pinch, just revert to a CWM backup, and all's well!
So, to answer your question, unfortunately, no. One of the only ways to do that is with Titanium Backup, a program from the Android Market.
CWM is for reverting to previous incarnations of your phone's software and firmware.
Sorry I only answered one question, but it was the only one I knew how to in an effective manner.
Sorry, I can answer another!

A radio is the way that your device communicates with your mobile networking. (wifi, 3G/4G, etc) Different Radio versions (numbers) work better for different people. Most developers will release a matched radio with their ROMs, which is usually what works best for them. Depending on your area, different radios may work better for you. Ultimately concerning radios, Your Mileage WILL vary. it's one of the other big trial and error pieces to flashing custom ROMs.

Radio Number/Version is the version of ur radio. This is signal related.
So when updates come out they typically update the
radio and make the signal strength better.
This is something to be careful with, when changing ROMs
make sure that the some you are about to change into
supports ur radio version.
When u use ClockWork Mod to backup it will backup your current settings. So if u backup it consists of your rom , apps, settings, etc. so if u restore that then everything would be like the old one. So Yes, u would have the set everything back on the homescreen. Its ok, u will get used to that.
When they release android 2.3.5 you might have to "wipe" your phone and do it again. Maybe, depending on your rom, you might be able to flash on top of 2.3.4
H-Boot is similar to the Bios of the computer. And you know how carefully you have to be to change that.
But the H-Boot version that the 1st sticky says allows changing of certain things, thus allowing you to have root.
Feel free to ask away, im here to help you

lol. you posted both while i was writing up my response.
Its good though, because then the OP will get to read 2 times as much, which will make him even better at the terminology and the process
Lol. I'm just trying to be helpful so i can get to posting on the Dev. forums. There are plenty of easy questions there...
Appreciating the help guys =] Starting to understand a bit better!
So when i flash a new ROM, i must flash a new Radio? If i flash the recommended radio, how likely am i to get a good signal? And if im getting poor signal, i just have to keep trying new Radios? ( I Heard flashing radios is one of the ways you can brick your device)
Also with CWM - When the backup is made... do i have to keep it on the Sd card? Or can i move it to the computer so it takes up less space?
And if i understand correctly - CWM basically creates a backup just incase things go wrong you can always revert back?
... If i use titanium backup, what benefits does that bring over CWM? - Is it worth the money?
Thanks again

Also, how do i find my hboot version?
Ive started trying to get S-Off... just be reading ahead, it says that Custom ROMs come with root already? Does that mean i just need CWM with S-Off to flash a ROM? Or do i need to Root + Do the Super-Cid thing?

- Hold the power button, untill you get Shut Down, Airplane Mode or Restart.
- Click on Restart then Yes.
- Wait until all the lights on your device turn off.
- Hold the Vol. Down Button until a white screen shows.
There you'll find HBOOT-XXXXXX
This is your HBOOT version.
To get to your OS again:
- Make sure FASTBOOT is hightlighted.
- Press the <Power> button.
- Go to REBOOT by pressing Vol. Down.
- Press the <Power> button.
Hope it helps

You don't need Root to install a custom Root.
Just S-OFF, CWM and SuperCID I believe..
Just note down your old CID before writing the new SuperCID as you may need it later if you want to flash RUU and afraid of doing something wrong
Later on, if you want to flash RUU (Rom Upgrade Utility) without the fear of flashing a wrong one, you can just write the old CID to your device again
Check this post to know more
Sorry for the silly amount of posts... i cant find how to delete them!
Just so you know - I've archieved S-Off now , and installed CWM successfully.
Am i ready to flash a ROM?

To flash a ROM, you mean Stock ROM (RUU) or Custom ROM?
If Custom Rom, please read my post #13 then do the SuperCID thing as you will need it for custom ROM..
About your saved games, the only way I know you can backup your saved data with is using Titanium Backup, which can be found in the Market.
Obviously, if you still don't know what you're doing, research more and then do whatever you want.
I take no responsibilities about anything that may happen to your phone using any of the methods above.
Good luck

That's exactly what happened to me when I backed up.
I think you should ignore it, as it is trying to backup an extension in the SD-Card, as you can re-partition your SD-Card using CWM as I understand.
I would be pleased if someone explained to me what exactly sd-ext is and what I'm missing
Good day to you all

Ignoring it is ok. sd-ext not being backed up is most likely an indicator that an EXT4 formatted portion of your SD card was not found. By default, your SD card is formatted as FAT32 because of its universal acceptance by all OSs. Some users report a performance boost/personal preference toward EXT4, YMMV.

Most importantly, ClockworkMod does not back up your SD card. that is something you have to do manually on your computer, should you choose to do so. CWM is only responsible for backing up the internal storage of the phone that can be changed or wiped by ROMs (or mike1986's SuperWipe.) ROMs shouldn't change the contents of the SD card.

Really? honestly man, READING IS FUNDAMENTAL!!!!! If you just "managed" to get into recovery, I don't think you should be flashing a new ROM, not to mention a new radio. Please please please please do your research before you brick your phone.
ARHD thread gives you everything you need to know on how to flash their rom. There are numerous threads out there that document how to flash a radio and a ROM.
1. Download ROM
2. download ARHD superwipe
3. place ROM and superwipe on sd card
4. make a back-up using rom manager
5. reboot into recovery
6. data wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (found in the wipe section)
7. flash super wipe (you do this by choosing the option install from SD card, will take a minute or two and reboot you into recovery)
8. flash ARHD (same as super wipe directions)
9. reboot
10. Enjoy.
If you even ask me to be more specific, I'll blow up your computer. All of this information could have been found by searching and reading. Get it together before you destroy your phone. I wouldn't even recommend radio flashing until you do the proper research...THERE IS A THREAD IN THE DEV SECTION FOR RADIOS, that you clearly skipped over when you found ARHD thread.

You really don't need to mod edit with the radio at all. Just install AR and forget about the radio; if you ran the ace hack kit, the radio you have is the best one there is period.

Since your a noob here and because I was rather a jerk the first time around, I'll play nice..in short all RILS have a matching radio and it is recommended that you flash the proper RIL for the radio you're using. Since your a noob, it is important to note that when you flash a new ROM, the radio does not change just the RIL. Which brings us to the reason ARHD is recommending the 4.19 radio is because the RIL for that radio is included in their ROM. I have read that you don't have to flash matching RILs to your radio but I always do just for good measure. It has been stated that flashing the matching RIL for the radio you're using can lead to better performance, signal and battery life, etc. The RIL for 4.03 radio I believe is in the radio thread. Simply download the RIL file and flash in recovery, remember if you do flash a new RIL..ALWAYS MOUNT SYSTEM before you flash the RIL, which is found in the mount option in recovery
As already stated. Please know what you are doing before you so it. Would you load a custom OS to your PC without reading up on it first? Most likely not. Flashing a device is not for people that are tooo busy, tired, distracted or just lazy to read up on what they are doing. This can and has left people very upset with a non returnable brick due to not reading.
Also this is a development forum not a support forum. You are expected to at least try and fix your own issues by researching before opening a new thread.

Radio download links?

Hey all, I'm sorry if this seems an odd question, but I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around the process of how the One S gets different features flashed to the device.
I don't have my One S yet (Hopefully it'll arrive later today, 7/27) but I wanted to be prepared when it arrives.
It seems the links are broken in this post and it's stating that this thread is outdated.
If I'm going to flash a new ROM on the device, are the radios generally included in that ROM already? I see that you often times need to manually flash BOOT.IMG on a per-ROM basis due to not having s-off? I'm comfortable with all of that, I just want to make sure that I'm not missing anything, and unfortunately it seems as though there is little information in some of the threads on XDA that clearly answer my question.
Call it a personality defect, I just like to 100% understand something in every possible way before being able to attempt it. Unfortunately when I don't have the device in front of me, it prevents me from being able to do that, but that's what forums are for, right?
Cheers all, I appreciate anyone taking the time to answer my question.

The latest radio with android 4.0.4 rom is said to be much better in terms of performace of wifi and cellular data signal then all previous versions, unfortunately buying a phone at this stage means that you probably will have a later hboot version 1.13 and this hboot doesnt allow flashing radio from recovery like the previous versions. You can find out more info about the radio in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033
To answer your other question the radio has to be flashed separately from the ROM. Hopefully your phone comes with a lower hboot so flashing wont be a problem, make sure you dont accept the ota update out of the box like i did so u dont accidently get an upgraded hboot. Makes life more diificult ;p.
Its a used phone and is already running CM9, so I'm hoping its the older boot. I already made sure it was the S4, but I just realized that the unlocked phones don't support TMOUS bands, so I'm a bit screwed at the moment.
I don't know what the next step is for me, so I may be forced to move to Straight Talk until I can get another 100% compatible TMOUS phone. I saw it has 2100 HSPA radio frequencies so I had assumed it would work on TMOUS. Needless to say I feel pretty stupid now.
Thanks again for the links, they were exactly what I was looking for!

If you want to get this new radio, the only way to do it at this moment is to change to SuperCID and follow the steps from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033

ROMs & Radio compatability S-ON

I've got my Inspire rooted and working pretty well, but still S-ON with RADIO: 12.69a.60.29U_26.17.14.11_m. I'm now looking at flashing a new ROM.
After looking at a lot of ROMs, reading about Radios, I've begun to wonder about Radio compatibility. For example the Android Revolution recommends a different Radio than I have. Some ROMs suggest flashing the Inspiremod which also recommends an different Radio.
From reading various threads it is stated clearly that S-OFF is required to "Fastboot Flash" a radio.zip.

You can't flash radios with S-On. Only with S-Off.

Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash CWM recovery and custom roms, but again not radios or boot images in recovery (you have to do it manually).which might imply it can be dome manually.

If ROMs/inspiremod recommend other radios and I can't flash a radio s-on, I assume radio performance will suffer.
Given the additional risks associated with Radio flashing I might prefer to avoid it. However, it seems to put a serious limit on the ROMs I can use. What's the alternative? Is there a way to flash radio S-ON?
I was reading about using "fastboot boot recoveryname.img" to flash a ROM without doing the fastboot of Boot.img. Would this work for Radio?
I'm guessing not, but thought I'd ask.
Try flashing the ROM without flashing the radio. If wifi, bluetooth, data, and all those other fun radio things work fine, don't worry about it. Radio recommendations are merely recommendations, not requirements. Of course, however, if you do notice a performance problem, then you'll need to weigh the decision for yourself. And no, I don't think fastboot flashing the image will work.

That's what I'll do, just flash it.
One other question about radio-
I've tried to research this but the radio issue is still confusing. With so many ROMs built for the DHD, and I assume configured for Europe, how's that effect use in North America? I've found patches (AGPS patch and inspiremod), but is it the ROM or Radio that determines network protocols?
I had an I4G, and I used many DHD ROMs without seeing any radio or reception issues. I don't know anything more in-depth than that.

Well, if I come up with anything I'll post it.
Edit: By the way I flashed my first ROM today. Went smoothly. Been tweaking and testing today.

I don't. I don't have the experience, and if you spend a little time reading other posts which ask the SAME question you'll find an answer.
The answer is there are too many, and too many variations to say which is best for you.
Guess you'll just have to do some homework.
Now that I'm home I have links to ROMs that others have compiled. Good luck.
