[Q] wipe data/factory reset with adb - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I`m have I5800 rooted 2.1 and my volume buttons dosn`t work. I`m able to get to download mode with adb (reboot download) as well to recovery but I can`t move in recovery because of not working buttons.
I was wondering does adb commands above do the same thing for me (wipe/reset)?
adb shell
su
format SYSTEM
format DATA
format CACHE
I now I have to be rooted to do it so after I install custom rooted ROM I should be able to do this if I stuck somewhere in boot loop or something? Planning to upgrade to Lestatious 1.2.

Hardly, factory reset does not erase OS from device and if you do format /system, you will lose OS and get bootloop during restart.

Yes, I am certain. If permission is denied, does it mean I am NOT rooted anymore?

No. Restart your device and see if it works, or try using other apps that need superuser to work. Is busy box installed?(I don't think this will help but you can try reinstalling busy box.)
Cheers

Don't make the mistake I did, I assumed all recovery.img's were the same...they are not. Be sure to download the Darchstar_RA.img listed on the first page of the Darchdroid 2.7 post. There is a difference in the paths of some of the folders and that difference causes the dalvik wipe to go stupid and tells you to use adb to wipe. Using the correct Recovery will cure your ills.

Recovery 1.5.2 still does actually wipe Dalvik, even though it gives that error. It's just a text output error from the console.
Mods, shouldn't this be moved to Q&A forum?

Are you trying to mount /system with root explorer? If so check to see if you lost root. Did you try re-running the rooting script? I lost root once switching roms like that but just rerun the script and you should be fine.
i have root and everything. just cant mount system. even in twrp recoverry. how do i get back to clockwork without adb?

To remove any sort of further errors, I think you should reinstall stock firmware and then try CWM again.

it is simple i think..
1)just boot into recovery..
2) enter mount and storage option
3 and format all the options..
/cache
/data
/system
/sd-ext
4) reboot recovery..and...
done!..flash new rom as you wish..

Upgraded to 4.4.2 and lost root... I've searched but can't fix it...

I've received the 4.4.2 OTA update on my phone and I lost root.
This seems to be common, and I re-installed CWM (and I also tried TWRP) custom recoveries and they both work fine.
However, SuperSU and the SU binary seem to be halfway installed/broken.
How can I fix it?
SuperSU says it needs to update the SU binary, and if I try the normal method it fails and if I try the TWRP/CWM method it doesn't do anything.
so you can't flash supersu via cwm?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
CWM wasn't asking to install SuperSU and I wasn't sure what to flash...
However, I just used the cf-autoroot boot image and it worked.
Thanks for the help!
You have to flash super su in twrp or cwm recovery. Not from the super su app
I just clicked on the root button in WugFresh toolkit and it re-rooted it for me... easy peasy...
