[Q] Regarding steps to restore or switch ROM - G Tablet General

Hello,
I'm currently running Vegan, with pershoot's kernel. I'm interested in trying one of the other roms.
I've read through the install guides and although they are very helpful there are a couple of things I am unsure of.
What exactly does "wipe data/factory reset" do in clockworkmod? I know it should seem obvious from the name, but how extensive is the wipe? Also, is this something I should consider doing if I switch roms, and do I do it before or after loading the new rom?
Are there other steps I should take in the process of switching?
I used clockworkmod to do a backup and I used titanium to backup some of the apps.
Sorry for the noob questions. I searched the forum, the xda wiki, and the internet in general but couldn't find an "instruction manual" clockworkmod and being new to this I just don't know what most of the menu options even mean.
Thanks in advance,
Neudle

Can anyone help with this? I have the exact question and have search through many threads without a definitive answer.
I currently have CWM installed along with TNT Lite 4.2.
I want to try VeganTab, but want a backup of TNT lite.
I've created a backup of TNT with CWM. But what is the restore process for later, especially if you do a 'wipe data' before you restore. Doesn't this delete your backup?

[Q] Boot loop on evo with calkulin

Sorry if this has been discussed but apparently the forum search isn't working and these suggested threads aren't exactly what i'm looking for, although i did see one that talks about Fresh 0.2 and boot loop being caused by it.
So anyway, I have this under control, i would just like some answers. Here are my questions as simple as i can ask them:
I would like to get the notification bar included in the calkulin 2 v1.8 rom, it is very nice looking, does anyone know where i can get it without having to flash the rom on my phone?
What causes boot loops(at least only after flashing a rom or restoring files)?
What wipes should I be doing?
Is there something bad about using unrevoked to root your evo?
Is there any similar probs with MyBackup Root?
Here is some information you might find useful:
I rooted with unrevoked 3.2.1 which unlcoks NAND for EVO with froyo(which i have) so yes my hboot screen says S-OFF
I also switched from clockwork to amon ra 2.3 due to some issues.
I have flashed azrael on and it worked with no probs, even with only wiping CACHE, DATA, and DELVIK CACHE.
I did the same wipe for calkulin the first time.
Calkulin starts, i can use the phone. Then I restore apps and data with MyBackup ROot, and it says to reboot.
Once I reboot, the loop begins until i pull the battery(i don't know for sure, but I've never let it go beyond 10 minutes)
So I have restored my nandroid backup and everything is peachy.
Now i tried wiping ALL USER DATA/Factory reset plus the 3 mentioned above(and btw, i don't have an SD ext partition the wipe always says skip)
After flashing calkulin for the second time, i restore files again, reboot, and get the same problem.
I managed to find a thread where this was occurring with CM7(which i have not looked at so i don't know anything about it). Just give some suggestions and veterans and devs please figure this out! this is a big inconvenience!
It's probably worth mentioning that mybackup root worked with azrael(i think i heard that some apps aren't supported in every rom).
Again, I don't get this problem with the original rom or azrael. I was thinking of using the calkulin format all wipe, but i read that it's the same as doing the 4 i did(plus the sd ext, but i don't have that partition so it would be skipped anyway). Please someone figure this out thank you!
ps. i strongly think its mybackup root, but then again, i haven't tried rebooting without restoring anything and i haven't tried titanium backup either.

Steps to follow when changing ROMs

Hi,
I am currently running a CyanogenMod nightly and would like to try other ROMs for a few days until the stable 7.1 is out.
I want to know what wipes and backups I will have to do before installing the ROM and in what order.
Thank you.

Nobody is going to spoon feed you.

Happy reading!
Right well considering this is the Q&A section I'll actually Answer your Question
First you want to boot into recovery and make a backup of your current rom in-case anything goes wrong or you just want to revert back
If you are just changing your rom to a newer version of the one you are currently on (say your on a nightly of cm7 and are going to a newer one), just wipe cache and dalvik-cache.
If you are changing to a complete different rom, wipe EVERYTHING. Make sure you ESPECIALLY wipe data (factory reset) otherwise you will more then likely run into alot of FC (force close) issues.
Hope that answered you...
Thank you for your replies. I basically only wanted to know in what order I will have to do the wipes, if the order is necessary.
Also, how can I back up my Messages threads and my apps so that I can restore them after installing the ROM? An option other than Titanium Backup?

[Q] removing villaintweaks mod!

i've looked in the search and havent found anything.
so sorry if this has been answered dozens of times already.
Im on Samsung Galaxy s2 running Villainrom's 2.3.4 rom.
phone is rooted.
i installed villaintweaks and circlesmodgreen by hooolm. however i cant stand the look of it and wish to remove it.
how is this done?
thanks in advance
You can just install stock ROM or another ROM over it.
No wipe nor factory reset needed before flashing the new one?
That basically depends on the ROM. It is not always needed, but if you encounter any problems, such as the device is not booting up to the new ROM or you are encountering a lot of Force Closes, then you will need to do a full wipe.
The ROM should usually say it in the installation instructions if you need a wipe, however doing the wipe and starting from a clean table is the safest option.
Thanks for the short explanation.

Completely Bricked Phone (?)

Hi smart people!
Just to throw it out there, I am not very tech savvy so excuse me if I misuse terms and such.
I believe I completely bricked my phone (I hope I'm wrong). After I downloaded Cyanogen through ROM Manager, my finger stumbled on the "continue" or "next" button or whatever WITHOUT checking the boxes to clear data, etc. I believe this is where I went wrong as I think I followed all other steps correctly (fyi I used the one click recovery flasher and made a back up).
Now when I turn on my phone, it goes from the stock LG loading screen to a modified LG loading screen (Cyanogen's I'm assuming) but it gets stuck there.
I've been searching on the different threads for quite a while and pressing the different combinations of volume up/volume down/power don't seem to do anything. I cannot get to the recovery screen.
Please help! I will forever be indebted to all of you. I am stupid and shouldn't have tried to do this on my own. Thanks in advance
What you will need to do is flash CWM via NVflash then boot into CWm and install your ROM.
If you flash CWM via ROM Manager it causes problems like what you're describing, I know from my own experience of following a friends instructions and doing that then having that exact issue. After getting my phone working again I then started to frequent the boards here.
As soon as I read the first couple lines I saw rom manager and saw the problem, you to search something that you have typed out all within this thread... I'm not near a computer but you should just search through these threads and you find your solution in detailed description. You need to get recovery from nvflasher just search that

No, that's not for G2x. Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Ya it needs to be the one that gunnman wrote out for people.

Hey guys...on step #10, it says to "select 'have disk'" but i do not see that option in the list.
Thanks
okay now i realize i should have been doing the cwm recovery. sorry guys and thanks again
reboot error
hey guys,
I successfully was able to boot into cwm and then i restored a backup from yesterday. however when rebooting, it displays the LG logo and then the screen goes black and the back light flickers on and off. not quite sure what to do now...if you guys could let me know what i should do or post a link to another thread, i'd really appreciate it. i honestly have been going through other threads but i guess i'm just not competent enough to know which directions apply to my problem.....
thank you..hopefully this is the last time i'll have to bother you!
The back-up could be corrupt and since the one time I had a problem with a nandroid was when it was created after ROM Manager sent the info to CWM, that's likely the case. Just redownload CM7 to your SD card, along with Gapps, wipe system, data and cache then flash CM7 followed by Gapps.

Have you wiped everything before restoring your backup through CWM? If not, boot into CWM, wipe data/factory reset, go to mounts and storage, format system, then go into advanced options, wipe delvik cache, then restore your backup.
I'm guessing you did a backup through rom manager, so if this doesn't work, you'll have to download a rom of your choice from the development section of this forum, load it onto your sd card through CWM although this is not recommended but you won't have any other choices, (to mount your sd card in CWM, go to mounts and storage, mount sd card), then wipe everything as mentioned above, then flash the new rom.
Or you can follow the instructions on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644 to flash 2.3.3 via nvflash to get a working phone for now until you learn how to properly flash custom roms.
Hope this helps
P.S. for future reference, you did not brick your phone, you got stuck in a boot loop, you know your phone is bricked when you don't see anything on the screen when you turn it on, usually it's just a software issue, but sometimes it could be hardware, for example I burned the motherboard on my previous android phone trying to customize it lol

He's already flashed CWM the right way, and tried to restore from a nandroid. I already mentioned getting a different ROM, he's already stated that he got this all started trying to flash CM7. Please read the posts which have already been made, we don't need the same information being posted again, if someone already posted something and you feel it needs clarified then clarify but from what I can tell you read one post and that was it.

I really hate posting anything that doesn't have to do with anything phone related but I just couldn't stop myself from replying to your post!
1) I actually read all posts in the thread!
2) I did not in any way suggest that he didn't flash CWM the right way, I merely asked if he had done a full wipe before restoring his backup!!
3) Your reply was submitted while I was typing mine, so I'm sorry I didn't check the thread again before submitting my reply!!!
4) I'm well aware of what he tried to do already, but thanks for repeating it!!!!
5) If YOU read all previous posts you'll notice that my post does not exactly replicate any other, there's some new information in there that the OP might find useful!!!!!
6) From what I can tell, you need to work on your english and comprehension skills!!!!!!
To the OP, sorry for trolling your thread with this post, but I just couldn't help it, and to Bonk I hope you'll be the mature one and not reply to this post.
Is that to say you're immature? If one were to judge by the number of exclamation marks you have I'd say yes.
The only "new" thing was asking if he wiped before the restore, which, at this point, would be useless to ask as I already told him to make sure to wipe.
To the OP: How goes everything thus far?
thank you
that's what i ended up doing and it worked. thank you so much for all your help!

And dalvik cache for good measure, even though it is stored on the cache partition and will probably get wiped when you wipe cache. Sometimes it's good to overdo thing's.
Unable to do anything!
Well i was playing with the phone, rooted and kept playing with different ROMS till i would have found a good stable one, but something happened, I ended up not being able to use any functions in cwm (apply update from..., backup and restore, install from zip). I wiped data/factory reset, cache partition, dalvik and i have the ROMS inside, i can see them in CWM. just can't read them. or any zip i use. what happened? is this bricked? if so do i have to go from scratch with the phone and use SDK?

UNROOT help
Hello again smart people,
I was hoping we would never meet again (for the better) but unfortunately i must unroot my phone to receive work emails. I have tried unrooting my LG G2x multiple times but to no avail thus far.
Here is the process I have tried:
1) boot into recovery - wipe cache/data factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache
2) restore - using stock rom i found online
3) flash stock recovery image using nvflash
4) (attempt to) unroot using superoneclick - AFTER GOING THROUGH MULTIPLE STEPS, IT SAYS "TRUE" UNDER "CHECKING IF ROOTED". (also, i know it is rooted because it says the phone already appears to be rooted when i try to root again).
Do you guys have any idea what the issue could be?
Thank you in advance...

Nandroid backup, unroot & restore back up - will I lose anything

Good afternoon folks. I've been toying with Galaxy's for a few years and am fairly competent with rooting, etc. I've been searching for a long time with no definitive answer on the subject:
If I use TWRP to perform a complete backup, can I: 1, flash stock firmware. 2, do what I need to do. 3, re-root and. 4, restore the backup with complete success? In other words, will I lose some of my data, settings etc?
Thanks very much
(I'm trying to get Snapchat working on root, and this would be the easiest way to do so, if it returns my phone exactly to where it is at current state. I know there's a couple of threads that discuss Snapchat but they're a bit messy and involved.)
Running stock rom, rooted & xposed.
You won't lose anything if you restore with twrp, that's the purpose of it.
Now if you don't have twrp installed yet there's the issue of losing everything when you install it, read the twrp thread.
