[Q] Defy ROMs over at Neopeek - Defy Android Development

I would like to know who wants to post their roms over at neopeek so as to start a thread over there too.
I would like to start seeing CM ports for Defy.

Hi there,
Sorry to sound a bit negative here, but why would anyone want to do that? We already have a superb structured forum with all the available roms for the defy here and the most common ones are being regularly developed and tweaked by some top guys.
I have just taken a quick look at neopeek (as i hadnt heard of it before), and when you drill down into Android Forum Android Roms / Android Porting Android ROMs it falls into a totally disorganised mess.
The XDA Developers Forum is the best available by a mile! (a totally different league to the rest).

MIUI Ported ETA

I´ve been looking for a MIUI ported rom for Our Lovely Galaxy 3 for like a Year or so.
Seems like June,2011 a group started trying to port it,they even posted some threads about it (what was working, and what wasn´t) but suddenly, people stopped talking about it.
Is there any ingoing project to Port MIUI ROM (COMPLETE,not just the ClockWidget,Launcher or w.e), including notification bar and animations ?
Let me know,
Sorry if its not at the right forum, but since it is a forum about development...
Thanks in advance
EDIT : This is the "PORT" im talking about, but seems like its not MIUI,its just another launcher that looks like it.
You really had to ask this in development? You couldn't have just posted this in the actual thread?
Wrong sub-section to post in.
Development = Actual work that progresses our phone. Even in the smallest aspect.
This doesn't do anything for us much.
In other words, you could just message them about it. Either way, you should find your answer.

Thanks, and sorry posting at the wrong thread.
Thanks Styloo aswell.
I hope they manage to do it right.
@haree Please close this thread. It is not development and it doesn't even mention in the title '[Q]' so the title is very misleading.

Exactly what I thought.
I was thinking there would be an ETA for it.
i believe they are waiting for the marcellusbe's Gingerbread AOSP port...but since he's busy with the CM7 currently, the MIUI port would take a little time
EDIT : NOT DEVELOPMENT

Questioning the utility to reorganize the threads on the forum???

Hello everyone.
That's my issue may not be the right place, but this is where I find the most relevant, since for this section.
I think for some time the number of threads are increasing enormously for new ROM, which is fine because it shows that the community is very active) but many of the Roma are found to be the same base or from ports of other devices, and there are so many with names that look alike or have nothing to do with the content (I will not name to avoid any controversy and stay in a general term) that we end by not knowing what exactly that is.
So I think it should be revamped a little with all that can be sub-sections by Dev ports or Roma, ways to try to eclaicir section and avoid ending up finally with questions about a thread that has nothing to do with this thread Rom.
That's what I feel for a very short time and I think it would be good for both dev and users of éclaicir things.
When do you think??
Arma, a user begins to consider warning from the time I practice android flash device.
This makes little to no sense, so can't really reply. Think youre essentially saying that maybe devs combine their different ROM releases into single threads?

Or subforums? So the DHD Dev subforum has a couple more subforums within it (one for ported ROMs, one for ROMS built on a native base)? That's how I read it anyway.
Sorry for my bad english (google translation), but yes I think it would be although it is organized by several sub-forums, for example, the ports of other phones, stock rom, rom MluI, or do that every dev its own sub-forums, and finally they are ideas, see what might appeal without being overly burdensome for devs who already have enough to do.
If someone else with ideas on how to build the threads?
The discussion is now open.
I think people would over see things and it would be a mess then a dev gets a new device and his sub forum is left behind and annoy like sticky threads

sub forms like : Sense Development, MIUI Development and Ported roms development would be super cool and better than just one single development section.
It takes me a roughly 15-20 mins just to find a thread here lol

I totally agree to that!!
Agreed. Either that, or we need someone to keep an updated sticky again. But a "Utilities" section, for radios, RILs, and recoveries would be a good idea also.

[Q] Rom development, or lack there-of

Anyone wonder why there are devs on this device who are running their own custom roms, yet no one is PUBLICLY developing for it? They all have personal roms, and are unwilling to post them for us to use? Anyone know why?
Well there are no roms and development because we can't. Samsung didn't release the source code for the wifi chip so we can't mess around with stuff as much.
I don't know of anyone having personal roms or anything similar of the sort so where did you hear that? (As rude as that sounds I am genuinely curious)

That explains some of it... But I have seen some members sig lines say things like:
DEVICES I own:
Galaxy Tab +, rom= personal rom
or
my own rom that Im not sharing due to xda community on that forum
I'm not trying to start a flame against any specific member (which is why Im not naming names), Im just curious as to why they dont actually share their work...
Well my take on that is since we can't mess with it they most likely made small changes and there is no point in releasing it or they made a rom and it is there own rom and it has been released thus the 'personal' title.
In terms of the no sharing I think I know who you are talking about and he/she has recently released a rom in the development section if you look.

Lol I DO know and I saw their Rom.... Actually tried flashing it.... I'm glad that they finally released.... I love seeing development explode..? maybe that's just what I'm waiting for??

I am running my own personal created ROM, but as suggested above, the changes are minimal and so releasing the ROM would really be pointless. I am testing tweaks and mods here and there, but I really haven't found something super beneficial worthy of being released to the community.
Once Samsung releases some wifi driver source (or ICS source), then development *should* pick up.

[Q] New to android development

Hey guys, this is my first post on the forum.
I checked some other threads to make sure they don't have the exact criteria that i'm posting and
couldn't find anything, so to the mods, i'm sorry if this has already been discussed.
Please notify me and I will re-route to the correct thread.
I've had an htc aria(liberty, gratia) for the past two years and I rooted it and flashed cyanogenmod but that was the extent of my knowledge.
I've now switched carriers to Sprint and am running a MotoPhoton Q 4g Lte(rooted and custom recovery).
The reason for this post is I've noticed what seems to be a general lack of developers for this device (partially because the stock rom is very efficient), but I would like to start contributing.
I've got plenty of free time and would consider myself generally competent, and i've browsed the android developer's site for app building.
The question I present to the community (particularly developers) is how did you learn the system and get to where you are? What tools did you find easiest to use that also helped you learn the essentials? I would particularly like to develop roms and platforms, but would it be best to start with apps?
I hope my questions were clear and correctly placed, thanks in advance for any replies!
EDIT: this should be in Q&A
Moved. At least you realised where it should be so happy to help
Thanks
AvRS
Google has a nice training center for sdk & dev, might be a good starting point.

[Q] is there a way to filter [ROM]s from XDA?

Hello all,
I've been visiting XDA since the first android phones. And I love seeing all the development made for phones. [MOD]s, [KERNEL]s and fixes/tweaks interest me. The trouble is, they get completely buried under threads about re-skinned stock/ CM / AOKP roms with a different kernel strapped underneath, and given a name containing "jelly", a biblical term, or a word describing speed. Most of these roms don't contribute actual development, and although they are nice for beginners or people who cant spend a day without flashing their phone. I don't care about them, and they obscure the actual development that is happening at XDA.
Is there a proper way of removing threads containing the [ROM] tag from XDA?

Well the [ROM] tag is to differentiate it from a kernel, mod, recovery etc. and doesn't imply that it's any more than a compiled CM base with just a theme add-on.
I understand your frustration completely, but people have to get started somewhere don't they? And the ones that have the most replies, i.e. most popular, tend to stay near the top of the forum anyways.
It would be rather arbitrary I think to take off that tag or tell someone their ROM was not "real" because they just compiled CM and added someone else's kernel and themed it a bit, because technically it IS a custom ROM. What you might do to help that specific chef is post suggestions in his ROM for how to better improve it, and browsing through the various ROMs doesn't take all that long does it? I mean I use Nexus devices, so you know how many ROMs I have to choose from.
I can appreciate where you're coming from, but a custom ROM is a custom ROM, no matter how heavily or lightly modified it is, and to now infer something isn't modified enough from Source to be labeled [ROM] is too much a gray area I think to adequately and fairly decide.
That was my observation too, the more popular the item, the better chance it'll be near the top of the list.
