I have a few questions.
Can I use google voice on this for video chat?
Which rom can I install to make this feel more like my Droid 2.
Do I need clockwork mod installed before I root.
Is there a guide to rooting this?
Once I completely customize my gtab, is there always going to be a way to do a factory reset on the event I need to send it in for repairs or what not?
So far this seems like a new tab, my first tab ever. I am sickend by the UI and that is the very first thing I would like to change, I have looked around aand it looks like there are 3 different roms to choose from.
I will greatly appreciate any and all answers for my quesions.
Thanks.
Welcome! Read, Search, and read some more. As has been quoted oft times before "search is your friend". Each of the subjects listed is readily answerable here from previous posts. If you get stuck, research some more, and if still you are stumped ask away. Lots of good people here will help but they appreciate a little homework being done upfront first. Have fun and jump in.
1) Not yet. Wait for Honeycomb and we should be in business.
2) Depends on what rom you're running on your Droid 2. If you run Cyanogen there, then install Cyanogen on your tab and it'll be identical. Otherwise if you're running more or less stock on your Droid, then there's probably not going to be an exact match.
3) You don't have to "root" per se. The bootloader is already unlocked, so, in essence, you're already rooted. Just install clockwork and you're good to go.
4) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950 will give you restore instructions.
5) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245 tells you how to get up and going with custom roms.
6) Out of the available options, I'd currently recommend VEGAN, though of course it's somewhat of a matter of opinion.
Welcome to the forums, and glad you're here. Let us know if you have other questions.

I don't use Google Voice. Am waiting on the Skype App to add video. In the meantime Yahoo! Messenger works.

I can't ask this there because I have less then 10 posts
But on the guide about installing closkworkmod, I am having an extremely difficult time.
Entering ClockworkMod:
If you want to get into ClockworkMod you need to shut down your device, then press the Power and Volume+ button (the same way you did to install ClockworkMod).
However, when I do that, it is just installing some thing again.
And I don't even know if I installed cwm in the first place.
I unzipped the update.zip and the Recovery folder to the root of the tablet, followed the instructions it showed it updating something, and now trying to enter cwm, all it ever does is repeat the update.

Delete the update and try to boot into recovery again.
also, nothing shows up in my root folder on the tablet, and when I downloaded the internal to my tablet, and I tried to copy from downloads and paste in to the root folder, it says paste failed.
EDIT*
So I deleted the clockwork d/l from sdcard/downloads, and tried to boot into recovery, It showed me the same install box, however I had deleted the install zip.
So I am pretty sure I didn't install cwm in the first place.
I don't know how to get the update.zip into the right location, and I don't have a microSD to install it from.
Cancel that, I don't know what I was doing wrong.
It is now installed.
Hello, boy do I have a mishap. Well, anyway to begin I will say that I decided I wanted to root my phone to debloat it. So what I did, is downloaded the EE4 update and did the VooDoo V4 Kernel that flashes CWM and EXT4 and other junk. Well that all went great. I got it rooted and such but then just tinkering around I went into Rom Manager and told it to back up. WELL, when I did this the phone got locked on the SAMSUNG boot screen for hours and continued to refuse to boot. SO, I attempted to fix it by installing altered beast just to get the os running again and went into clockwork and backed it up. Then I went to the rooted ed1 to bring it back up to EE4 rooted and with the voodoo kernel and such but it refuses to open clockwork! The voodoo kernel changes filesystems and roots it and such but clockwork wont load. When I try to flash it in rom manager it says its succesful and then i go to reboot in recovery. It takes me to the Samsung Recovery 3e, I try to the update.zip, (yes i took the cwm recovery-update.zip and renamed it and through it in the sd card root) but all that happens is that a progress bar shows up for a split second then the android guy with the triangle and ! shows up and it does nothing. Help? I really need to back it up, preferably in the rooted ed1 but in ee4 will work to. Any ideas would be appreciated. I used odin v1.3 by the way. Im willing to try anything to get clockwork to boot so i can back it up. What do I do?
EDIT: Also, now when I go into 3e recovery, it complains saying " cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 " or something like that.
Did you read anything on this forum beforehand? Or just go link by link downloading files and deciding what to try on your phone?
Just saying..
Yeah, I did. Ive searched everywhere. I cant find anything about my problem. Ive looked at things that are close, hoping a solution can be found but nothing and no I wasnt just downloading files and spoon feeding them to my phone.. I just wanted to be able to debloat it.
Go search about Rom Manager and let us know what you find out...
I dont see how thats going to get me one step closer to solving my problem. Ive done the searching, now im asking.
Start w/ this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100384
I can't tell where you are currently on your phone from reading that as it's to much text in one paragraph and it isn't put together in a logical sense and seems to jump around. I would look at the instructions for going to rooted EE4 in the Dev forum as that should get you to where you want to be with voodoo/cwm/rom
Instead of being a Forum Snob. If you know the answer, why don't you just help him out?
There's an abundance of confusing information on here and everyone uses acronyms. I too searched for hours on how to solve a similar problem and ended up having it taken care of for me. People join communities like this one for help. Not to get flamed for asking a question. It may be elementary to YOU but not everyone.
Thanks, for the care. Sorry about that if its jumbled, im frustrated with this because ive flashed the rooted ed1 about a billion times now, trying everything to get it functioning. Id be glad to try to explain again if that could help? Ah, yes. Well, I returned to the forum about installing the voodoo kernel. I followed the process word for word. But it just doesnt seem to want to work. Right now I just flashed it again back to the rooted ed1. Would I be able to put CWM on there at that point?

Alright, thanks. Ill try and use imnuts's cwm recovery. But if someone may answer a question, is the samsung bootloader unlocked?? My brother said thats something to know.

so it is unlocked?? What does the exclamation triangle mean, when i try to do the update.zip from the samsung bootloader?
Oh and sorry if Im not getting this. Are you saying use a application that imnuts made? If so, could you be so nice to link it? Or a method he used? I looked for stuff but I didnt find anything other then what looks like a stock rom/kernel ed1 from him
I know how it is to be frustrated, but like they all said all of your questions have already been answered.
Here's my attempt to help:
Your problem lies in trying to flash CWR through ROM Manager, it currently doesn't play well with our phones. Word is that Koush (the creator) needs to update something for it to work with our phones. The bootloader is unlocked.
To flash imnuts' version of CWR, you'll need to use Samsung's leaked software called Odin - it's PC only. The alternative is Heimdall which is supposed to be cross-platform compatible, but the latest version is command-line only.
You have to find out if you've converted your system to EXT4 or if it's still RFS. That depends on if you have the Voodoo lagfix enabled or not. Check out the dev section and look for the titles that say [RECOVERY], [ODIN], [ROM], and/or something like "Get yourself to EE4 successfully".
A few links:

Well, currently right now its rfs. Its the stock file system. What I was going to do, or did before, was to put it in download mode and flash the VoodooV4 Kernel. It roots the phone, and all that good stuff and is suppose to put the Voodoo recovery/cwm on there.
EDIT: Heres the proccess I followed before.

The recovery is a separate flash, both in odin. First the kernel, then Recovery.
Just follow here from the beginning, it should work for you:

Well I have good news. I would like to announce that I have successfully installed CWM. I guess my phone just didnt like the other one or something. But following this link,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
I was able to get it installed. Now my only question is, I want this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092114 for my phone. But its not in a zip. Am I out of luck? Or do I not have to use CWM to install the kernel? Can I use odin and still be okay?

You do need Odin to load that, but i'm wondering why you want to? Did you install the PBJ kernel following the instructions from the other link?
If you want to go down this route, be sure to apply the SD Card fix as well - you'll find posts about it.
Yes I super one clicked, and odin to intall an unrooted version via the facebook Mesmerize fan page so im rooted.
Phone is now running firmware 2.3.4 Kernel 2.6.35.7, and eho9
All I want to do is change my Sounds and animations at start up and shut down and Every program I get does not allow me to edit the rootfiles. I have all the files I need just cant get them in the right place.
Maybe on a related note, the CWM update.zip gets the signature failure as i have seen soo soo much on here. none of the so called fixes work. manually through oden or through cwm direstly.
Any input or am I going to have to dump this turd and get another carrier?
bought sidekick sght839 from friend and it worked fine b4 doing reset. now, when it starts, the tutorial comes up on home screen and can`t press arrow to proceed to next page. firmware 2.2.1-kernal 2.6.32.9-build froyo uvkj2. the wireless works and connects to internet fine. can`t use phone as 456 keys dont work and worked b4. can change settings OK. have rooted it. still doesnt want to work as b4. am new here so if someone could let me know if they have any ideas, I would appreciate it. am also new to android phones. I cant find heimdall file to download. Know how to set phone to download and use Odin but cant find proper files online.
Use the search bar on XDA to search for the kj2 stock Odin files, follow the directions given closely, download them, make sure you have the correct drivers so that Odin recognizes your phone, then boot into download mode using the method found in the forums, just do a quick search for download mode. You should have everything operational after download from Odin is finished, hope this helps

trouble installing odin
I have tried numerous times to install Odin but all I get is unregistered device...that is as far as it goes. Dont know how to get around that. 456 keys also work then dont work otherwise the phone works fine as far as internet and making calls goes. Crazy device!
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350060&highlight=heimdall
I soft-bricked my phone and this was the only method that worked.
if you havent reflashed your firmware yet, i have a suggestion. install clockworkmod recovery. there is a thread in the sk4g development section of this website. the title is something like cwm for the sk4g. enjoy! so look for that and follow the instructions in the first post of that thread. make sure you grab the update.zip file from that thread and do not flash cwm through rom manager. trust me on this. after you have followed the instructions in that thread, boot into cwm (boot into stock recovery and select reinstall packages. you should then boot into cwm recovery), select advanced, and then select fix permissions. when it finishes, it will say done. reboot your device and see if any of the problems have been fixed. i did this and it stopped my phone from randomly rebooting every 15 to 30 minutes. it might fix the problems on your device. if not, i would move to the next step, reflashing the firmware. flash the kj2 build and then learn how to remove bloatware. kj2 is less buggy to start with. still buggy, but less buggy than KD1, KG2, or the other version (KI2?). if you reflash firmware, you will need to re-root in order to remove bloatware. removing bloatware is key for optimal performance with the stock firmware. you can also flash a custom rom if you wish. most of the custom roms on this site have minimal bloatware, so if you wish to go that route, bloatware shouldnt be much of an issue. i personally am on the stock firmware and dont suggest flashing roms for someone so new to android. but if you feel confident enough, thats your decision. i also suggest booting into cwm and running fix permissions after removing bloatware. i theorize that removing system apps causes permissions errors similar to registry errors in windows.
some success with sk4g
don`t know how or why but I got frustrated with the phone and threw it in the trash on top of coffee grounds...changed my mind and pulled it out and cleaned it and charged it and...voila...it worked. banged it against the sink a couple times. weird! so, now I am trying to install custom rom and keep running into everification error when I try to flash. 456 buttons still dont work and cant take a video with it but it will probably work better if I can find a work-around for these errors I get. I am on a mission now and I cant give up. Hope someone can help me. I think there may be hope for this thing. Thanks for whatever help I can get.
i told you, install clockworkmod and fix permissions. it will probably fix the problems you are having. if you choose not to listen, thats. your choice. but my advice will probably help you without having to through the pain in the rear of reflashing the firmware. reflashing the firmware itself isnt really that difficult, but once you do it, your back to square one with your device. starting from scratch is the frustrating part. i bricked my phone and had to reflash, and it took me a couple weeks to get the phone where i needed it again. im staying on the stock firmware for this reason.
how does one fix permissions
OK OK dont yell. How do I fix permissions? Newbie on board here so I need a little more help than the rest. I dont necessarily want to do the rom thing myself. Thanks.
copy and paste this into your browser: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453 and follow the instructions in the first post. after you have followed those instructions, boot into recovery mode. the stock recovery will apear. scroll down and select reinstall packages. the clockworkmod recovery should boot up. the text in the screen will be orange. scroll down and select advanced. scroll down again and select fix permissions. when it finishes, it will say done. reboot your device and see if you have any of the issues you were having. i am not guaranteeing this will fix the issues, but i think it might. if it doesnt, my next suggestion will be reflashing the stock firmware. but try this and post back when finished and let me know if it works.
sk4g problem
didnt work. did exactly what you said and no go. any other suggestions. it works so well for some things like wifi and calling except 456 buttons on and off. it is funky indeed. thanks for the help also, cant take video or manage photo or use front camera as the left side button to choose options doesnt work either. seems like something is up with the rom. cant install anything from samsung or tmobile as it is an unregistered phone.
were you able to boot into clockworkmod recovery?
boot up
yes I did.
then you need to reflash your firmware. you need odin, you need the samsung vibrant drivers, and you need the firmware files. do a search on odin in the dev thread for this device and you should be able to find everything you need, including instructions.
Have tried that too
have the drivers, have odin and have tried that too. that didnt work as the phone is unregistered and not recognized. it is used and I cant register it.
on your phone, go to settings>about phone and scroll down to where it says baseband version. the last 3 characters under that will say either kd1, kg2, or kj2. if its not kj2, then i have a suggestion for you. but post back and lmk.
phone setting
it is kj2. now what? this is all confusing as it has been updated I believe by previous owner. thanks for your time. i am going to try the odin method again. i first did it on a 64bit puter with windows 7 so i can try it on my 32bit machine. have read that sometimes odin doesnt work well on 64bit. am willing to try anything. will let you know. thanks again. cant get the stock rom download anywhere. will just try flashing custom rom.
you cant odin a custom rom unless the dev makes an odin file, which they usually dont. you have to flash through clockworkmod. you can head over to the dev section and pick from many roms that are listed. follow the developers instructions for flashing very carefully or you will brick your device.
Thanks for advice.
I know I can`t odin a custom rom. I can`t seem to odin anything on this machine. I have cwm and have tried using it to flash a rom but I keep getting everification and such error msgs. Gonna let it sit for awhile and think about this. I have the update.zip file on sdcard but can`t seem to get that to install no matter what I do. Very puzzling deal. Thanks anyway for your help.
do you have android sdk installed on your computer? google it and install it, then try odin again.
got sdk
sdk installed and will try odin again...seems a little more complicated than the last time I tried...will google a bit more on this. Thanks.
Ok, I've done something stupid and I don't know what.
I've searched the forums for about 5 hours now, and can't find any help. If I've missed something, I apologize. I'm kind of frazzled.
I was trying to install an updated ROM from my internal SD via CWM recovery. There was an error, and now I'm stuck in recovery mode. I've tried clearing everything, but it won't boot to anything other than the CWM Recovery screen. I can't go into download mode to flash anything, or else I would just flashback to stock and start over. I even tried the whole taking your battery out and plugging the tab in to go to DL mode, but that does nothing.
We're dealing with a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3113.
I'm about to cry.
Plz halp.
I might have it fixed now, but I don't want to get ahead of myself.
I finally managed to time my button mashing well enough that I'm in download mode. Will update soon.
If anyone cares.
I GOT IT
Ok, so I sill don't know what I did to end up in his mess, but through what I count as sheer luck I ended up in download mode, and was able to use ODIN to flash a stock rom.
I would delete this thread, but I want to leave it open in case anyone else runs into the same issues.
I had a similar issue when trying to update my rom, I found this to be particularly useful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302599

I did read that, but I was flashing a GB ROM, so I figured it didn't apply. I do appreciate the tip, though.
