I dont know if this a problem im having with the phone or is this how it is, some times when my phone is not being used and i pick it up after a few mins, it takes about 30 to 40 seconds to pick u data connection again, the bars stay white than turn green.
Can any one confirm if its just me or is it a bug or is it just built this way.
Thank you.

Are you running any custom roms or stock?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Stock, i just got the phone so i havent done anything to it yet.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I wouldn't say its a bug or anything. I had the same problem on my vibrant. Usually a network or tower issue within your area. Otherwise if you have a case on, that may be the culprit.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
It also does that with the wifi on. But if its just how it is than i guess i dont have to exchange devices, cuz i dont like doing that buy if i have to i dont mind.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The 3g and wifi icons only turn green when the phone is connected to the internet "&" google services, if the icons are white you are connected to the internet but not google services, this is by design.
Thank you so much. Now i dont have to worry about about an exchange at all.

For the past couple days, my phone has been sporadically connecting to Google (white/green signal bars). Seems fine when I'm on wifi, but when using Sprint, the problem seems to be coming up fairly often. I checked all setting, all looks good. Is this a Google/Sprint issue or something with my phone?
Thanks!
Me too man... Sometimes when I try too load the browser it just shows white bars and the 3g icon Is white too.
Evo
Well at least I know it's not just me Guess it's a Sprint issue...
Same here

had this same issue, and now i'm not even getting 3g. cant even update my profile or prl now.
i have the same problem. it seems to happen almost ever 10 minutes. if i'm sending a text or in an app that requires internet, i'll get errors like "not sent" "disconnected" or "no active internet connections" and that's even when I'm ON wi-fi. i don't understand it. i figured if it was a sprint issue, i would get the "x" over the signal bars and not a color change. i assumed it was a radio problem? but i don't know enough about this stuff. lol
That's weird. I have the white bars and 3g icon and I can still get on emails market mms and on xda as I'm typing this now.

You still have data with the white bars. The green bars just indicate you are actively connected with Google services like gmail, talk, etc.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
if your not getting the green connectivity to google, check how much internal app storage space you have left. not the sd storage. ive noticed that every time that i go below 100mb app storage, i lose connectivity to googles servers. and i dont get it back, turn green, until i either uninstall a few apps or move them to the sd storage.

phone is back to normal this morning (so far)...
This has been happening to me as well for the past 2 weeks. I've tried a hard reset, but the issue is still persistent.
I have 614MB free.

Seems to be fixed today.

Nope, I'm thinking this was more of an issue w Google and/or Sprint.

Something tells me you are using a task manager that is turning data off when the screen is off.

No. I just turn it off with the notification bar cm7. But when its on and I surf the web sometimes it happens. And not right away but after searching a few sites
My nexus S keeps loosing its google sync even in great coverage (well great for ATT) and going grey.
happening to anyone else? Thought maybe there were some pre ICS server issues or something.
You're not low on internal memory are you? If you're at less than 40MBs or so that'll happen.
Not that i can see

I didn't figure that'd be the problem with all our internal space but worth a check. My wife had that problem a lot on her Evo 4G.

I think it was my enhanced email app update that bugged it out

I have Foxfi installed on my s3, it works great for like 5 mins then it looses connection and I have to re connect. It just continues, are there any settings on the phone that hinder the connectivity after a certain amount of time. Also when it does this I can immediately pick up the phone and hit the chrome browser app and it loads instantly. So I don't think it's the radio or my signal. P.s. have screen timeout set to 15 mins. Thanks and please help , I kinda don't want to root and nit even surer if that would make a difference.

Settings/developers options.... make sure the "do not keep activities" is unchecked.
Otherwise, welcome yourself to the disturbing (and growing) number of data connectivity issues popping up with the s3.
Before I rooted I was using foxfi and it was the same ****. I understand it as the same issue as dropping wifi.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

So. I have looked, And looked. Tried XDA, android central, Google search. No answers. Even called Google about this. I had an HTC incredible s before the n5 running 4.0.4. I would be connected to my WiFi. Mobile data would be off. I would send a MMS. Mobile data would turn on, send the MMS and turn off. All the while WiFi was still on. Now after some search it seems this was a code I'm the framework of sense ROMs. The phone was rooted and running mike1986 ROM. Awsome feature. Fast forward to today. N5 will not let me do this. My wife's moto x is the same issue. Now I understand this is not a huge deal to some but to have to turn off WiFi to send AND receive even the notification of an MMS is annoying. Is there any way to get around this? I have tried 8sms, and another app. Can't remember the name. No luck. Thanks guys!
No one?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
@montrealer99 use textra does exactly that and can send sms and mms straight over wifi and it uses ur actual phone number
Thank you. Tried it today but still no luck. I find it hard to believe its so complicated for Google to fix this or at least add it as an option after 4.0
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So it seems that as a battery saving idea, mobile data gets turned off when WiFi is connected. Will not allow MMS to function.

Same thing. Now one person at my work has a n5 on a different carrier and it works. Another is on the same carrier as that person with a gs4 and it does not work. Both are running 4.4.2

I decided to root my handset yesterday, all went well and that handset has been rooted successfully. I've kept it entirely stock, no ROM or kernels. I am experiencing what seems to be a connectivity issue. If I connect to WiFi my signal bars turn white, indicating a connection to the Google servers however, when I disconnect my signal bars turn orange.....full HSDPA signal but are orange.....stranger still that I am actually able to connect to the internet with no issues. I've searched and people are saying that the orange signal bars indicate no connection to Google servers and in turn this means no internet connection? Does anybody know of a fix or have an explanation? All was well before I rooted and unlocked the boot loader.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Rooting can't cause this. Can you receive gmail?
That's exactly what I thought! I've rooted handsets before and never had an issue connecting to Google servers etc. Yeah I can receive gmail, but I need to do it manually, it doesn't seem to be pushed through like before. I thought at first it was an issue with the APN but I've checked and reset it to default, still getting these damn orange bars. The arrows at the side suggest I am sending/receiving data though......I've attached a PIC.

I thought the orange bars there indicate that you're roaming.
Orange bars means that its not connected to Google servers.

Orange means you are not connected to the internet.
Try reset your wireless router/setting.

Orange bars means that you are not connected to Google servers and cant receive notifications, it does not necessarily mean that you are not connected to the internet.
Try doing a factory reset.
go to accounts
remove your google account
once u do it may ask to enter a backup account
re enter your google credentials
reboot

If Chaco81's solution works, please let me know.
As several others have mentioned to you, it means you are not connected to Google services. This happens to me randomly, and I have yet to find a solution. Sometimes I just wait it out, and it magically starts working again after a few minutes. Sometimes I reboot, and that seems to work 75% of the time, but because it isn't 100%, it makes me think it's no different than waiting it out, it just makes me feel like I'm doing something. This has happened to me on various ROMs (including stock) on my Nexus 4, Moto X, and Nexus 5. It is very frustrating, and I can't seem to locate a cause or a fool-proof solution other than waiting.
EDIT

I highly discourage doing a factory reset for this problem, especially if you have no backup program like Helium or Titanium. I have never had to do a factory reset for this problem to correct itself, and seeing as it happens to me randomly no matter the device or ROM (and I always do a full wipe moving between ROMS), I do not think this is actually a solution. I think this is just like what I consider rebooting, it doesn't fix the problem, it just adds time in between the problem starting and the problem stopping naturally. Even if it is a 100% sure-fire fix, it will take much longer to reset and fix everything back to how you want it than to just wait it out.

Easiest way to fix it is to get on a WiFi connection. Once it connects to WiFi Google will sync and then turn off WiFi and you will have white bars. This tends to happen to me when my data coverage is low and speeds are down. I don't think the slow speed is able to reach Google servers thru the downlink. Just my thought but I have no clue.

From the look of your notification shade, you are obviously not using the stock ROM. What else has been done to your device?
Without more info on your phone, its tough to give solutions.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
It is completely stock ROM with xposed and gravitybox installed. Apart from that, its pure stock. Even at that the only things I have activated with gravitybox is the notification shade and circle battery mod. Nothing has been touched in way of kernels, radios, WiFi, telephony tweaks etc. Really don't fancy having to reset my device entirely, thanks for the suggestion but I'm not planning on restoring it back and setting it up all over again. As for the WiFi suggestion, it worked for 3min 27sec (yes I timed it) but then, low and behold, the orange bars were back. I've been reading on some Google forums that its an issue in 4.4.2 but it was working fine prior to me rooting. I even put it in to safe mode to see if it was an installed app that was affecting it but that turned up nothing.

^ OK thanks for clarifying. There are many potential reasons for this issue, so it is hard to track down.
Do you have other android devices? Do those work without issue, in your area, over your cellular connection?
If so, the problem isnt related to your Google account, or your cellular carrier, and must be device related.
If its device related, don't do a factory reset. Instead back up everything you care about and flash a factory image.

The signal actually came back and turned white for the rest of the day. Then it dropped out to orange again. Think I'll hang on to things the way they are right now and persevere with it and hope that 4.4.3 comes with a fix. Thanks.

I'm on T-Mobile UK, well EE, as it's now known. The issue doesn't SEEM to be affecting things but I honestly can't be sure. In saying that I'm having to manually refresh my gmail and Google now notifications aren't displayed as often as before. There seems to be a few posts online about people with similar issues so there's every chance it is a DNS issue.

yeah, Im running CM11 and stock 4.4.2 rooted, unlocked and with run time ART on N7 and N5. I see this on both ROMs. On stock the icons turns orange for cell and wifi. But on CM11 the wifi icon would change to have a line running through it. I think its the same but with different icons. Both would act the same but both seems to have no advert effect for me tho.
