When there is a will there is a way. Chances are it will be a long time if ever but, I am sure we will see custom roms eventually
Most likely we will not see it In our phones

Who cares about Gingerbread on our phone.
True

With the Nexus S already sporting it and google actually programming for a Galaxy phone, the chances of Gingerbread are very good.
Google is already optimizing it for the hummingbird as we speak, it'll be easier for Samsung to port it to their other devices.
Before it was easy to port to the EVO and everything else just because the nexus one had very similar CPUs to all of them.
How do you know its using the same processor as our galaxy s phones?

Most of the speculations suggest that it has a different processor, just saying.......

not everyone has the money to outright buy the phone in feb and even if u got your cap at release your a long ways from an upgrade I will pay 600 or whatever it is because i have to have it. And I really think samsung working on froyo was a waste, seeing as how gingerbread is coming out soon, should have just upgraded to that next.

Lol we don't see any evidence of Samsung putting effort into Froyo. I know there have been a few build leaks, but c'mon, you don't really think they put a ounce of sweat into it right?

lol, agreed. Don't know why so much talk about "Gingerbread"
We don't even have "Froyo" yet, only the leaked version. And even then, when the official release does come out, I won't be upgrading. Too bloated when AT&T get's their hands on it. I'll stick with the customs.
Plus I think most of the people in here that has any of the Galaxy S phones will most likely part ways when "Gingerbread" is out. I know I will (and I don't think our Galaxy S phones will get it either).
I also believe there is no "GPS fix" for our phones in the future either and there won't be one.
Haven't been proven wrong yet. (Remember the GPS "improvement" in September) What a JOKE!

That's the problem, Samsung figured if it put in all the most powerful toys in a single package and didn't give a crap about how it was put together or how the software is to make it actually work, it'd still sell on specs alone.
And they were right.
So they now have absolutely no incentive to make a more quality phone in the future. They're just lucking out that Google is choosing them to be the next Nexus (if rumors/leaks are true, of course).

Here is the problem samsung doesn't seem to get. We buy their phones on a two year contract. They get paid monthly or whatever from AT&T for us signing up for two years. Who in the $&$& wants to buy their phone when you don't even get a full six months of support from samsung. I have to pay AT&T for two years to buy this phone. I know apple gets paid monthly from AT&T as part of their subsidation process. I bet samsung does too. They get paid for nothing. What a rip.
2.2 should have been released sept at the latest. Things should be gearing up for 2.3.... And we are still waiting for 2.2... Last samsung phone.
Anyone who wants to can install the leaked 2.2. I have, it's rooted, and has lagfix installed. It's very fast and GPS works great...I'm just sayin'.

Been there done that still have broken gps. I bought the captivate assuming they would fix the gps. I still doubt that broad com would somehow make a gps module that doesn't work.
Agreed, I had a captivate with a go phone sim in it, and now have a fascinate on vzw, we actually got a leak last week,( if u thought att was behind hear this) is was eclair, it did address and fix, GPS Fully, but this is a eclair maintenance update scheduled to come out in December. I don't know about everyone else but I could give a duck less is they give me the greatest eclair ever made. I don't want it. Even tho I knew better when I got this phone I was told "you will have 2.2 within the month" welll its been forever and not a mention

Apple may have a special deal but other Phone makers do not. Samsung, Moto, HTC - they sell through many channels, not just AT&T - and they sell off contract.
The way it works for hardware:
AT&T buys phones from Samsung... probably about $300 per phone. They sell them subsidized for $200 or maybe $0.99 or they sell it unsubsidized for $499. Samsung makes their profit on the phone sale when they wholesale them to AT&T.
Updates are created by Samsung on behalf of the carrier. If AT&T doesn't want to bother with an update, then the manufacturer doesn't create it. Again, this goes for Samsung, Moto, HTC, etc. It has been this way for WinMo and Android. Nothing new here.
Believe it or not, Apple also sells the phones for fixed price to AT&T. They may make money on some monthly cut, but that is a separate deal. But don't compare Apple, they have a deal different from every other phone maker out there.
After the long, dreary task of fooling with AT&T, Samsung and (5) warranty replacements, I am no longer a Captivate or AT&T customer.
I walked over to VZW and picked up a Droid X on 2.2.1 and I must say I love it! Gonna slide on over to the X forums and see what ROM's are cooking. I appreciate all your help guys and loved Axura more than anything!
ROCK ON!
If only the iPhone was available with someone other than AT&T, then I'd jump ship too. But, alas that just isn't the case, so I'm stuck with AT&T for the foreseeable future.
Does AT&T pro-rate the ETF like Sprint does? I'm looking to get out myself. I don't see myself sticking with AT&T until October 2012

Yes the Captivate is very high end... unfortunately us early adopters have been screwed by Samsung (i.e. GPS and shutdown problems). I am convinced the GPS problem is hardware based after seeing a newer Captivate lock quickly while mine just sat there...

I agree with you on the GPS, hardware problem.
I'm still holding out for an 850 Nexus S... like they did with the Nexus One.
You can also get a Desire Z from Bell Canada that would work fine. It's basically the G2 with Sense UI.

Just wanted to post my experience and hear of others that are also making the move.
Now I may have a totally different view than most, but Overall, this phone was pretty awesome. First I had a G1 on T-Mobile. The excitement of learning Android and having the first phone was fun. I've been fortunate to be involved in every dessert update. Finding XDA, rooting, learning ADB, all the learning of all the other stuff was awesome. Then I jumped ship and got the Droid Eris. Now shortly after getting it, I regretted the hell out of my decision. I should have gotten the OG Droid. But XDA helped me love my phone. Cyanagen, and other ROMs were awesome, and the Eris forum and developers were funny and friendly. Then with 2 months left in my contract and waiting for the Droid 3 to come out, I won the Droid Charge in the droid landing contest. I enjoyed the 4g fastness and tried to keep things stock, but I keep lingering on XDA and finally gave in. I couldn't believe how easy it was to Root and flash this phone. With that, I spent less time in this forum and didn't really post much. I purchased the TBH app leaks and didn't really come by and participate. But I will say that this phone at first was great, but really is a disappointment. Great cause the SCREEN, the easiness of rooting and flashing, and that's about it. The 4G never works when you need it the most. Don't get me wrong. When it works, its amazing! But those times it freezes and then goes to 3g then goes back and freezes, etc...RAM was not enough to do all this phone is trying to do. And of course the battery, but that's universal.
Now, I've sold my charge and have a prepaid VZW card for $300 ready to pre-order the Galaxy Nexus. My contracts is up, and I still have a new every 2 credit. I look forward to the excitement and fun experienced with the G1. This is a whole new OS, and I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time in the XDA forums. I'm in total love with ICS. I was not disappointed at all with ICS. The hardware of the Nexus, um maybe, but you gotta be real picky. I think this is a phone I can finally have for 2 years and be happy with the whole time. Quad core phones next year, then by 2013 maybe HD projection phones. But this phone should be able to stand up to most competition till then. Hope it gets all the updates, and quickly. Jellybean?
I've got my money ready for the 10th.
I really dig my Charge, but I've been waiting for a pure AOSP experience on Verizon for far too long.

I want it for the ICS and dual core. Not sure if I'll be able to afford it or not though. Can't really blame ya for wanting to jump since it is such a bada** phone in specs. I'm kinda so-so with my Charge.

LOL...I think my post got misread by yourself, or mistyped by me. What I was referring to is that I plan on keeping this phone for 2 years. I'm hoping that in the 2 years, what ever updates that happen to come out, the Nexus gets them quickly. Then I put jellybean with a "?" thinking maybe if in that time it would get it. Like I posted above, I'm in love with ICS and would be fine having it for 2 years. But we all know that google updates pretty quickly. I have no idea what they could add, cause ICS is great, but when it's(JB) announced, we're all gonna want it, and soon. Just like ICS, GB, FY, ECL, DN, and Cupcake. Ahh, Cupcake.
Man, I remember waiting for Cupcake and wanting it so bad. Touchscreen keyboard, widgets, and record/playback video.

Doing this too. I paid full price for my charge since my contract wasn't up, but it is now. So hopeing to use that 50%-60% that I'm supposed to get back to buy the Galaxy Nexus. Now watch them not carry it >.<
Kind of in the same boat. I'm just not sure I can deal with this phone for 2 years. I've looked around a bit to see what I can get for it plus the stuff I got for it. I'm more interested in the Droid Razr, but regardless I don't know if I can justify that kind of cost.
Hey guys,
Is there any reason I should hold out on buying this phone? I can get it from amazonwireless for 150$ and no tax.
Is there any other awesome android phones coming out on verizon this year? Or do you think the price will drop drastically soon (maybe to 99$?)

I noticed the new droids... my sister has a Droid 3. It sucks though, cause she's stuck on gingerbread and it's not a popular phone for customization. From what i read (And experienced), motorola is horrible for tweaking, while samsung is the best with htc in 2nd.
Since this phone has an unlocked bootloader now, and also has GSM radio, that's a big plus for me.
I just don't want this phone to fall another 50$ right after i buy it, especially with iphone 5s coming out soon competing with it.
Do you guys know if there's an even cheaper way to get it other than 150$?

@fr8cture return and buy it again! get your $50 back!
@rpn its probably not going to sink any further than $150 with a new contract for a while. The only reasons I can think of holding back is to wait for the 64GB model (which may or may not be sold by verizon)
Whatever you do, make sure you refuse to give up an unlimited data plan if you currently have one! Make sure the salesman knows its a deal breaker (even if its really not)

I paid $515 on eBay, so I say you both got good deals lol....that said, I haven't thought twice about paying that price, and doesn't bother me people get it much cheaper on upgrade prices
Is this for the 16 or 32 gig model?
The new Motorola droids are identical to the s3 spec wise. In my opinion Motorola typically has better reception than I have had with the s3. But if you like to mod, there will definitely be a better following with the s3, and aftermarket accessories will be more widely available. The other upside to moto is the amazing battery life of the maxx.

Yep I'd be surprised if it came out before October 2013. The reason this was out so soon in my opinion is because the amount of carriers that got it. Everyone threw money as Samsung, so instead of only a few getting it like the GS2, pretty much everyone did this time around.
Also if you want a phone with customization do not buy a Motorola. They already confirmed that developer editions of these phones will be coming out for $500+ . Coming from a X2, no one could unlock that thing.
I think you can wait for a period of time.

Can't you just root it? Someone would have to find a way to unlock bootloader but still.
SG3 is now $139 on Amazon wireless. I just got one.
What is there to even consider, this is totally a no-brainer... DO IT man!
S3 specs are lightyears away from any phones i foresee coming out in the next 3-4 months.
This is going to be THE phone until its replacement comes out. I would be amazed if we don't see a nexus by the end of the year, but if you are Verizon don't even bother looking at it. And I personally don't think it is worth waiting. The S3 has gotten awesome support and is such an awesome piece of hardware that you won't regret owning it!

I'm doubting an official release of ICS for the Thunderbolt. I'm hoping for HTC to release more sources so that we can just build it ourselves.
And as far as those two phones go, get the DNA. Or wait until February and get the HTC M7.

the only downfall with the dna in my opinion is that HTC makes it
now im not a htc hater, in fact they are the company that make me jump on the android ship, and ive loved them until I had the thunderbolt, rezound and incredible 4g
with the lack of updates from HTC im affraid to get the DNA, the best comparison is the droid razr and rezound; the razr has 4.1 ready to roll out in early Q1 2013 (there was an "accidental" ota update a few weeks back that gave a few hundred uses android 4.1, and motorola confirmed android 4.1 in early Q1) where the HTC rezound may get 4.1 but it will prolly be around june- and I honestly think thats on the early side.
but If HTC shows better upgrades ide jump over there to the DNA right now
Well if it makes you feel any better. The DNA already has sources out for it and it had them released the first couple of weeks of its release. It is very unlikely that a phone with the power that the dna has won't get updates. The problem the thunderbolt has had the whole time is dual core phones were right around the corner when it was made and HTC blew it off for more powerful hardware.

The problem the thunderbolt has had the whole time is dual core phones were right around the corner when it was made and HTC blew it off for more powerful hardware.

Oh and on another note. Verizon is partially to blame for the lack of support and ics on this device. They keep stonewalling the update because I think they know we still have unlimited and they want us off of it. If they give us the update then it is unlikely we will upgrade anytime soon. You also can't forget that this phone was the first from Verizon that has the svdo capability which the source to that has been kept under lock and key for quite some time now. I think that Verizon is protecting that info because they may resurrect it later on. This and the rezound are the only two phones that are able to talk and surf even on 3g. The others that are able to do this use volte (voice over lte) which only works with 4g.

As much as I hate using my tbolt everyday....I will be holding on to the tbolt until the next nexus phone is released for Verizon. I've had an update available for a while and would gladly go get a S3 but the tbolt experience has pushed me to the point of...nexus or nothing from here on out.
Never realized how slow my TB is until I got a Nexus 7.
Anyway, I'm waiting for either the Galaxy S4 or the next Google/Moto phone. Maybe the HTC M7, depending on when the others are available.

Probably going to be waiting awhile... There is a reason you don't see the nexus4 on Verizon

I don't know why everyone insists on blaming HTC for lack of updates on the Thunderbolt.
It's not entirely in their hands, or I believe we would have had it long ago.
The biggest issue is actually the network itself and is what's held up many updates for various devices, in my opinion.
If you think a Nexus on VZW will make things different, THINK AGAIN.(I urge you to read the link)
No matter how good or common, or baseline a device may seem to be, it will never make the carrier any better.
Verizon just plain old SUCKS at getting updates out.

and it wont change. ever. they have moved away from customer support because they don't need to worry about happy customers if they already have them tied down for two years. and all those issues people have disappear when its time to upgrade and the consumer is happy again. then the cycle begins again

thanks for the feedback everyone!
I know HTC isnt just to blame, BUT if you look at apple for instance (sorry for bringing them up) they can do what they want with their phones, and the carriers can pretty much shove it if they dont like it.
now my question is this, why can apple do what they want (ex no bloatware, and updates whenever they see fit) and android companies (HTC, LG, Samsung, And even Google with the case of a nexus) cant?
I left my Thunderbolt for a Galaxy Note II and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for me, and it still manages to sit comfortably in my pockets. The phone overall is excellent, but the two features that stand out are the stylus and the battery life.
I did not consider getting the DNA because it has an inferior screen (resolution aside,) and the battery life has been reported to be horrendous. I would say either the Note II or the GS3 are both very safe bets if you are looking to get a new phone.
As soon as my upgrade was up, I left my HTC Thunderbolt for a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I've waiting way too long for HTC or Verizon to update this phone. I've read article after article and posted on HTC's Facebook pages and no response. They've lost me as a customer (HTC, not Verizon; I'm not giving up my unlimited data!).
I suggest the Samsung SIII or the Samsung GNII. I love my Note II and think the Thunderbolt is soooooo tiny after using it (just took a look at my Thunderbolt 5 minutes ago to see what I can do with it without any service on it).
While I'm not ecstatic about HTC, I feel like Verizon is to blame here. Just look at how their policies are for everything else.
For all of you crowing about unlimited, you realize you are paying a monthly rate which includeds a phone subsidy right? Except, you get no phone. It's like "How about you pay full price for a phone, and then pay a higher rate as though you actually got a phone for free." Ooooo sign me up!
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but Verizon is getting lots of blood from you for the sake of unlimited. If you have the money, I guess its one thing, but OTOH, if money werent an issue, you wouldn't care about overage fees.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.

I have two phones with unlimited data on my plan and if I took the share everything plan I would end paying $40 more a month and get less data than I actually need. Plus I still wouldn't get one of those phone subsidies you're talking about since I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I would definitely pay full retail for a phone before I lost unlimited. Also there are plenty of phones I could buy used that are excellent for half the price of retail or better.

I'm leaning towards the S4 myself. I'm done with HTC. Got a Tab 2 and I absolutely love Samsung

All vzw customers will eventually lose unlimited data. They won't let you keep it forever. Mark my words

Just like other guy stated I would be paying more if I went on share everything plan I don't use a crazy amount of data but 13-20 GB a month is where I sit. I am hoping Google releases a phone every year like the upcoming xphone so I can buy it off the play store, if they are in stock that is. But I will hold onto my unlimited data as long as I can cause their share everything plan is a joke, $40 for a smart phone access fee equals $29.99+$9.99 which is what we were already paying to buy the unlimited or 2gb or 4gb all they did was slap a two cent raise and hoped no one would notice. I noticed jerks!!!!

HTC deserves some blame too - it seems like they gave the update to Verizon around September, which is still ten or eleven months after ICS was released.

That is true but how can we expect a company to push out an ota for a one year old device that probably 95% of the purchasers moved to a different device. We should all be happy that they got their crap together enough to give us this last one.
