Hey guys, quick question. I've been scouring the forum here but haven't found a solution yet.
I was attempting to flash back to stock using Odin and my phone just kinda "hung up." Odin basically froze so I did a battery pull hoping that I'd be able to re-enter download mode and reflash to stock.
Now I'm getting a black screen with a phone, and exclamation point, and a computer icon every time i try to power on my phone.
I've tried every configuration of the 3 button combo to get back into download mode that I can think of but thus far nothing has helped.
I've read that this screen is a sign that you're only "partially bricked" but I cannot for the life of me get my phone to proceed past this screen in any way.
Can anyone help?
You need a Jig. This is how I fixed mine but they sell them on Ebay if you have the time to wait.

You try turning on odin, plug usb into computer and NOT the phone, Then while holding volume up/down plug usb into phone. That put my phone in download mode for me, it may take a few trys but hopefully you can get it to work

Follow this ^^
I've done that to my phone countless times. The first time, I was really freak out lol. I personally used this method its worked every time for me. It's difficult to get it to work the first time, but one you get the hang of it its not too bad, so don't get frustrated if you try it and it takes a few times. It's also the most cost effective. Instruction are there under the video.

I appreciate the replies guys.
I was able to make my own Jig using a micro usb I had lying around and some resistors I bought this afternoon.
It's a hell of a relief to have my phone up and running and having only spent $4 to get it working again as opposed to the $125 AT&T would have charged me for the replacement.
Again, much thanks!

Ok I was flashing back to stock 2.1 useind odin when mid process my phone fell battery out usb disconnected and bam thats it. Now my phone is locked on a screen that shows a picture of a phone ! and a computer. I can get it back to download mode and odin will se the phone but gets no further then do not unplug device, my computer beeps when its plugged in but it dose not show the phone in my computer section. Any fixes or am i screwed?
PS phone is only two weeks old if need be could I take it back like this????
Hmm I think I may hove gotten past this problem. Uninstalled odin reinstalled and now it seems to be hopefully working
Here is the fix
I was in this same situation yesterday. Here is how to get it back into download mode.
•Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer.
•Remove and replace the battery.
•Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture should display on the phone's screen.
•Hold the Volume Up+Volume Down+Power buttons down simultaneously. The screen should go blank, then the picture should appear again. When the screen goes blank a second time, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume Up+Volume Down buttons down
If that doesn't work,i had a similar problem where I could get into odin, but it would progress beyond the pit file. Take the battery, sim and memory card out of your phone. Start odin. Put the battery only back in. hold volume up and down. Plug the phone in while holding these buttons. Don't let go until you are in download mode. Now try restoring. It should work.
Thanks for the input i am back up and running!!

Bricked replacement Captivate - Orange Screen
Just to let you know. I recently received a replacement captivate thru warranty exchange. The phone was apparently a new one with JF6. So I decided to do an update to JH7 using Kies mini. A little over half way to the update procedure, the phone screen turned orange and stayed there for a long time, eventually I had to pull the plug. Of course I had to manually go to download mode and launch Kies mini emergency recovery, the damn thing again got stuck at the orange screen.
If anybody has this experience do no proceed further and throw that damn thing back at At&T's face. Do not attempt to do anything. I made a mistake of then doing an ODIN one-click back to stop and the phone got stuck half way, went to the orange screen.. and then it was over.. The phone was dead, wouldn't turn on, no recovery or download mode with any button combo. When I plugged in to the wall, no battery indicator.
save yourself the trouble and return the damn thing
still there
I am a "noob" to posting here, and a noob to the android due to being an avid iPhone user. I am having the same problem, phone -!- computer and have tried every method i can find in this forum to get passed it. Are there any other thoughts or suggestions? (got hung at do not turn off target in odin) Thanks in advance to any help.

went that route, still cant find dl mode. have resistors built and all. any way i try to boot shows me the phone -!- computer, and the computer doesnt attempt to recognise it so there is no communication between the computer and phone. unfortunately, i dont have a v/ohm meter, so i am not sure of the accuracy of the resistors i used to make my jig.
I fixed this many times with phone that had the button download mode and didn't.
Getting into download mode while softbricked like this wont show the normal download screen. IT will still show the error screen....
With download mode working still:
Simply remove the battery and replace,
Open odin
Hold down volume keys and plug it in till you see odin recognize ur phone.
Then continue to use odin.
Dosent work, repeat.
If you know ur button combo dosent work:
Just open odin.
Remove battery & replace.
Use jig (3k 100k ohms twisted)
Then when the phone turns on and your see the pc! screen plug in usb.
See if odin sees it.
Assuming your flash didn't fail on the PBL.bin or SBL.bin you should be fine.
Follow the methods suggested by other users here and you will get back up and running in no time at all.
Don't sweat the 'phone-!-pc' screen. I'm a little surprised that no one has given you the good news....that is just a version of the download screen for later hardware revisions. It looks bad, but if Odin recognizes your phone (if one of the COM fields goes active), just start your flash again.
Now if Odin does not recognize the phone when plugged in via USB, then you have some more work to do.
I had forgotten about posting here, and my problem has been resolved. So here it is... I tried everything that I could find within this forum, almost. I built my own jig with inferior radio shack components that would not activate download mode, though it would turn the phone on. I got wise, spent 8 dollars at ebay and purchased a JIG there. Instant download mode after 3 days (shipping). Reflashed with one click, updated w/ kies, made kernal changes and am now rockin my captivate. Thanks to those who assisted.

Using the 3-resistor method takes A LOT of patience, at least in my experience. Glad everything worked out.

Patience is a virtue, and my Ex's name. LOL! I can do without patience.
Jokes aside, i actually soldered the resistors to a plug that i had cut up, and made sure it was covered so my skin wouldnt come in contact. The Radio Shack here buys inferior products and sells them at reggular retail. Unfortunately my $300.00 V-Ohm meter is on the fritz, and i have not had the time or money to replace it yet, but I have intentions to check the actual resistance of the jig I made. ^^
Before you say SEARCH, or call a repost of something else, I did.
I was flashing Assonance a while ago on my spare Captivate. Everything went great. I flashed to stock jf6, rooted, installed CWM, pushed the update.zip to my phone and installed it. The installation process went smooth -- no error messages and no unusual waits. When I hit "reboot" in CWM, my phone turned black. I left it there booting up (or so i thought?) for fifteen minutes or so before i realized that it was dead. Not the battery, but I figured it should have hit the AT&T screen, or atleast the GT-i9000 screen -- but nothing. I switched batteries with my other captivate -- the one i rely on, and didn't boot up.
I searched for the issue and one guy fixed it by charging his captivate for about an hour or so. I left it plugged in for four hours and it didn't work. I obviously tried entering download mode several diffferent ways, and tried everything to get my beloved spare captivate to boot. its the one i watch videos on, the one i lend to my family if they need to look something up, the one that takes pictures and videos and the one that acts as a wifi router, etc. it's important!
as a final check, a guy fixed it by just trying LATER, like the next day (i.e. 24 hours) and i left it on my desk, plugged in for three days and i left it unplugged for six days. i tried it this morning like i usually did every morning and it's still dead.
I've considered the little usb dongle thing thats supposed to get the phone into download mode (its just a bunch of resistors i can't find the actual name) but someone told me that it wouldn't work since my phone isn't even getting to the at&t screen or the phone (!) computer screen.
so what do i do?
You go build/buy that "usb dongle thing" called a JIG. It's basically 300kohms of resistance between pins 4&5.
Since I don't see many other options, I would say to give it a shot. I've gotten my phone into Download Mode with a black screen (no Phone (!) computer) using a JIG and button combos before. While the JIG isn't a surefire thing, it's a relatively cheap thing to try.

Just try it.
I know this had been posted all over this forum but I can't for the love of me find a way solve this. By phone won't boot, nothing comes up in the screen everything is black. This happened while trying to do the 3 button fix.
This is what I have tried so far:
All the possible combinations of buttons
Trying to get it to connect with adb on 3 different computers
Tried to see if the usb connection was read by the linux kernel
And nothing...
At this point the only thing I haven't tried is the Jig method that I will try tomorrow. Aside from this is there anything else before having to go to ATT and beg for a new one?
Thanks in advance
Additional Info:
I was running Serendipity 5.10 with the kernel included
Some people have had success getting back into download mode by removing the battery for 30 seconds to a minute then plugging in the USB cable, holding the volume buttons and (continuing to hold the buttons) inserting the battery.

I had the same experience last week. Took several tries, but I finally got back in and flashed a new ROM onto it.
The three button fix requires you to flash a new sbl, right? Chances are pretty high that you permanently bricked your phone and a jig won't do you any good. If the jig doesn't work (and I don't expect it to), you have one of two choices: Buy a riff box and revive your phone by taking out the motherboard and connecting it to the riff box, or mail it back to Samsung and have them do it for you.
Note that using the riff box will definitely void your warranty and Samsung will be able to tell that you took it apart in the event that you eventually send it back to them. Custom roms and bricking supposedly void your warranty, but if you're clever enough over the phone, they'll be none the wiser. Especially in your situation, where the phone doesn't do anything when the power button is pressed.
Thanks to all for your help and will update this thread on what happens for future reference. The jig did not work so the next step is to go beg at an AT&T store for a new phone... Here goes nothing.

Just tell them the official 2.2 update did it. "My phone turned off by itself while I was trying to do the update through kies".
Also, if you deal with Samsung directly, they'll mail you back the same phone, so if you got one of the lucky ones with a functioning GPS, you might want to hang on to it by dealing with Samsung instead of ATT.
I took out the SIM, and battery for more than 30 seconds, enter recovery using 3 button mode, open ODIN, attach cable and flash to Eclair...worked fine. Installed SIM after everything worked.
As modest_android pointed out nothing at this point works. I managed to get a hold of AT&T yesterday and they'll send me a new phone overnight.
Thanks to everyone for their help.
I'm pretty sure I bricked my captive. I have the phone-!-computer icon whenever I try to turn it on. I was using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439 that guide to give me the three button fix but when I went to pick up my phone during the process the batter slipped out(it wasn't secure -.-) and now I'm stuck at that icon. Please tell me there's some way to unbrick my phone.
Hold down both volume buttons and plug it in. If it goes into download mode you can just flash with odin. If not you need to make a jig. Search around for both these. Either way, you should be good.
I'm guessing my phone was either a newer or older version so the volume+power buttons won't work to get it into the download mode. I guess I'll try a jig tomorrow.
On eBay I will find 1 for 10 dls or so its always good to have 1 of those next to ur pillow so u can sleep well

That is true, I was freaking out and hoping I didn't have the most expensive paperweight in the world until I started searching around and found that a jig is my last hope.
Here is a guide I made which covers the Phone--!--PC problem..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012769
I had that same problem with my captivate, and didn't realize at the time that mine didn't come with the 3 button fix either. What always works (although you might have to do it a couple times because the timing has to be pretty precise) is take the battery out, plug the USB cord (after you plug it into your computer) into the phone while holding the volume up and down buttons at once. Then (with the cord in and the volume buttons still held), put the battery back in. This will work, even if your phone doesn't come with the 3 button fix.
After the phone works, be sure to flash the 3buttonfix.zip file. Do a google search and find the xda thread on it.
If you are going to get a jig, get it from mobiletechvideos.com. They are only $8, and come from a reliable source. If you get it on ebay you never know the quality. For this problem, you certainly won't need a jig. It is actually very difficult to hard brick a captivate, which is partly due to the fact that the bootloader is unlocked. Be sure you have the captivate insurance from AT&T.

The thing is your guide doesn't say what to do if Odin can't even detect your phone.
As for just holding the volume buttons, nothing happens. just stays at the phone-!-PC icon.
Next time put the battery cover back on before starting the process. Lesson learned.
Get a jiggggggggg

Be sure to do what I said above. The problem is actually very easy to solve but you need the right sequence of button/usb/battery
Phone--!--PC is just a download mode. If the computer does not recognize the phone, reinstall drivers, reboot and pull the battery out, then try again.
Try THIS out. See if that fixes it.
This worked for me once...

Question, was in process of using ODIN when USB became discoed. Reconnected tried the process over but unresponsive. Decided to start over, pulled battery and now the phone won't power on. Anyone else experience anything similar or am I hard bricked to anyone's knowledge?

How much charge did the battery have when you started this process?
90% or so. Been charging it on the wall charger for the last 2 hrs but it's still not turning on.
Even though your screen Wont turn on sometimes Odin will still recognize it. Try this: turn Odin on pull battery from phone hold down volume buttons plug USB in put battery back in. see if Odin sees the phone. You may need to try several times.

It was just another example of my noobness. I didn't bother to try download mode. I forgot + and - with usb, so phone came on right into download. Only thing was Odin would not recognize phone. Hiemdall would but I couldn't seem to get that working. Then I moved the USB cable to different port on PC and ta da! Odin recognized the phone and the rest is history. Finally rocking the latest Valhalla.
Thanks again everyone.

That's great. These phones are very hard to brick!
OK, so I don't have to start a new thread and waste space (on the internet?), I wanted to try and piggy-back off of this one; feel free to move it.
Basically, I thought it would be OK to flash a Vibrant ROM over my girlfriend's GS4G. That was a stupid, stupid idea. I'm thinking hard brick, but cannot be sure. I've tried all sorts of button press/hold combinations, batter in/battery out, usb in/usb out and I get ZERO response.
Suggestions, or do I need to find a replacement phone and girlfriend? She works in Social Media and kind of uses her phone ALWAYS!
Well, hopefully worst case scenario you have to replace her phone. Make sure to plug the phone up to wall charger and let sit for an hour to make sure it has juice. Next, take battery out place it back in. Hold the volume up and down buttons together then plug in USB from PC to phone. This should get you into download mode. If you can get this far then there should be hope for fixing the phone.

OK, I think it was shot. We ended up going to T-Mobile, told them we did a software update via USB and the gal said, "yeah, you may have gotten a corrupt file. That'll happen." Then we got charged $20 for processing and she'll have a brand new phone by next week.
Thanks anyway.
i guess 20 isnt too bad. never flash a rom that is made specifically for your phone. dam, if you did this next week, you could have paid a little (and by a little i mean like 150. lol) and upgraded to a sgs2.
