Ok I was flashing back to stock 2.1 useind odin when mid process my phone fell battery out usb disconnected and bam thats it. Now my phone is locked on a screen that shows a picture of a phone ! and a computer. I can get it back to download mode and odin will se the phone but gets no further then do not unplug device, my computer beeps when its plugged in but it dose not show the phone in my computer section. Any fixes or am i screwed?
PS phone is only two weeks old if need be could I take it back like this????
Hmm I think I may hove gotten past this problem. Uninstalled odin reinstalled and now it seems to be hopefully working
Here is the fix
I was in this same situation yesterday. Here is how to get it back into download mode.
•Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer.
•Remove and replace the battery.
•Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture should display on the phone's screen.
•Hold the Volume Up+Volume Down+Power buttons down simultaneously. The screen should go blank, then the picture should appear again. When the screen goes blank a second time, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume Up+Volume Down buttons down
If that doesn't work,i had a similar problem where I could get into odin, but it would progress beyond the pit file. Take the battery, sim and memory card out of your phone. Start odin. Put the battery only back in. hold volume up and down. Plug the phone in while holding these buttons. Don't let go until you are in download mode. Now try restoring. It should work.
Thanks for the input i am back up and running!!

Bricked replacement Captivate - Orange Screen
Just to let you know. I recently received a replacement captivate thru warranty exchange. The phone was apparently a new one with JF6. So I decided to do an update to JH7 using Kies mini. A little over half way to the update procedure, the phone screen turned orange and stayed there for a long time, eventually I had to pull the plug. Of course I had to manually go to download mode and launch Kies mini emergency recovery, the damn thing again got stuck at the orange screen.
If anybody has this experience do no proceed further and throw that damn thing back at At&T's face. Do not attempt to do anything. I made a mistake of then doing an ODIN one-click back to stop and the phone got stuck half way, went to the orange screen.. and then it was over.. The phone was dead, wouldn't turn on, no recovery or download mode with any button combo. When I plugged in to the wall, no battery indicator.
save yourself the trouble and return the damn thing
still there
I am a "noob" to posting here, and a noob to the android due to being an avid iPhone user. I am having the same problem, phone -!- computer and have tried every method i can find in this forum to get passed it. Are there any other thoughts or suggestions? (got hung at do not turn off target in odin) Thanks in advance to any help.

went that route, still cant find dl mode. have resistors built and all. any way i try to boot shows me the phone -!- computer, and the computer doesnt attempt to recognise it so there is no communication between the computer and phone. unfortunately, i dont have a v/ohm meter, so i am not sure of the accuracy of the resistors i used to make my jig.
I fixed this many times with phone that had the button download mode and didn't.
Getting into download mode while softbricked like this wont show the normal download screen. IT will still show the error screen....
With download mode working still:
Simply remove the battery and replace,
Open odin
Hold down volume keys and plug it in till you see odin recognize ur phone.
Then continue to use odin.
Dosent work, repeat.
If you know ur button combo dosent work:
Just open odin.
Remove battery & replace.
Use jig (3k 100k ohms twisted)
Then when the phone turns on and your see the pc! screen plug in usb.
See if odin sees it.
Assuming your flash didn't fail on the PBL.bin or SBL.bin you should be fine.
Follow the methods suggested by other users here and you will get back up and running in no time at all.
Don't sweat the 'phone-!-pc' screen. I'm a little surprised that no one has given you the good news....that is just a version of the download screen for later hardware revisions. It looks bad, but if Odin recognizes your phone (if one of the COM fields goes active), just start your flash again.
Now if Odin does not recognize the phone when plugged in via USB, then you have some more work to do.
I had forgotten about posting here, and my problem has been resolved. So here it is... I tried everything that I could find within this forum, almost. I built my own jig with inferior radio shack components that would not activate download mode, though it would turn the phone on. I got wise, spent 8 dollars at ebay and purchased a JIG there. Instant download mode after 3 days (shipping). Reflashed with one click, updated w/ kies, made kernal changes and am now rockin my captivate. Thanks to those who assisted.

Using the 3-resistor method takes A LOT of patience, at least in my experience. Glad everything worked out.

Patience is a virtue, and my Ex's name. LOL! I can do without patience.
Jokes aside, i actually soldered the resistors to a plug that i had cut up, and made sure it was covered so my skin wouldnt come in contact. The Radio Shack here buys inferior products and sells them at reggular retail. Unfortunately my $300.00 V-Ohm meter is on the fritz, and i have not had the time or money to replace it yet, but I have intentions to check the actual resistance of the jig I made. ^^

I have been having trouble with my Bell Vibrant for the past few days, with a black screen after the 'S' Tried several things out there to resolve this issue, nothing seemed to work.
In desperation I tried the Odin3 one-click, not noticing its for the captivate. I successfully flashed and am now in a reboot loop with the AT&T logo screen. I can't get into recovery mode. or download mode to re flash with different ROM.
Any ideas????
Yes this is a vibrant device running a captivate rom and I have also posted this question in Vibrant general.

Use odin for the vibrant, not familiar with that SGS phone so I don't know if they have a one click odin . If not, you will need the stock .tar or kernel, modem and zimage files.
Open Odin in windows.
Take out your extSD, Sim and battery, wait 10+ secs.
Now plug the usb in.
While holding the vol +- insert the battery and it should go into download mode.
Now you can click start in odin.
I do know that the vibrant is a pain in the ass to get into download mode and that the above is the most consistent way to get there.
This is what I know of the vibrant, correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
For what it's worth, I had a hard time getting my captivate into download mode. This is what I had to do...when you do this, have the ODIN for your phone ready because if you back out from download mode, you'll get the blessed 'phone to computer' screen...which I was still able to get into download mode from...but some people haven't had such luck.
1) Turn off phone...(take battery out or whatever)
2) Holding the two volume buttons down, SLOWLY plug in USB cord HALF-WAY. Push it in just a tad...if the screen doesn't come up with the shoveling android...push in just a little bit more...keep doing this until you get the shoveling android...if the phone turns on...you missed it - start over.
3) Once in download mode, if the ODIN program doesn't see your phone on a COM port yet...push the USB cord in the rest of the way and it should see it then. I think I actually had to unplug the cord and plug it back in slowly till it saw it. Once it does see it, don't touch the cord anymore!
4) Click start on ODIN and let it do it's thing. You should see a progress bar show up on your phone's download screen within a minute or so...if not...turn off the phone and try again. you will get the 'blessed' screen but hopefully you won't have to do it.
My heart stopped for a bit when I tried the above and it didn't work the first time and I got the 'blessed' screen. But I just tried again and all was fine...so don't fret too much.
Anyways...hope this helps.

He is on a vibrant, not a captivate although it should be close to the same procedure. I've seen the usb half plug method but it never did anything for mine.
A jig should do the trick. Get a MicroUSB-b plug breakout board from sparkfun.com and two resistors (300k+1k) in serial across pins 4 and 5. Turn your phone off and take the battery, sim, and external sd card out. Pop the jig into the usb slot and put the battery back in. The phone should go into download mode on it's own without you having to hit any buttons.
After that, just follow what everyone else said - use a one-click-stock odin for your particular model.
The jig worked. took a trip to the source and grabbed the resisters and took apart the micro USB adapter included in my BlueAnt handsfree.

Hey guys, quick question. I've been scouring the forum here but haven't found a solution yet.
I was attempting to flash back to stock using Odin and my phone just kinda "hung up." Odin basically froze so I did a battery pull hoping that I'd be able to re-enter download mode and reflash to stock.
Now I'm getting a black screen with a phone, and exclamation point, and a computer icon every time i try to power on my phone.
I've tried every configuration of the 3 button combo to get back into download mode that I can think of but thus far nothing has helped.
I've read that this screen is a sign that you're only "partially bricked" but I cannot for the life of me get my phone to proceed past this screen in any way.
Can anyone help?
You need a Jig. This is how I fixed mine but they sell them on Ebay if you have the time to wait.

You try turning on odin, plug usb into computer and NOT the phone, Then while holding volume up/down plug usb into phone. That put my phone in download mode for me, it may take a few trys but hopefully you can get it to work

Follow this ^^
I've done that to my phone countless times. The first time, I was really freak out lol. I personally used this method its worked every time for me. It's difficult to get it to work the first time, but one you get the hang of it its not too bad, so don't get frustrated if you try it and it takes a few times. It's also the most cost effective. Instruction are there under the video.

I appreciate the replies guys.
I was able to make my own Jig using a micro usb I had lying around and some resistors I bought this afternoon.
It's a hell of a relief to have my phone up and running and having only spent $4 to get it working again as opposed to the $125 AT&T would have charged me for the replacement.
Again, much thanks!
RESOLVED!
I have been on these forums long enough that if you violate protocol you get spanked but please resist if you can. I am out of ideas, I have the flu, I have a sick phone, I think this is the correct forum, I hope I have dotted all my I’s and crossed all my T’s. I have searched this forum and I have searched using Google.
Folks, I know there are dozens and dozens of "help me I've bricked my phone" threads. I have read and read and read but I can't seem to drill down to the exact issue I'm having. I used AIO Captivate Toolbox to attempt to install Cognitionv4.1.1.zip ROM on my newly updated to the official Froyo 2.2 Captivate. Having never seen the process before, but having been ROMing phones for several years it looked like it went ok. There was a progress bar on the phone as the file was downloaded, the phone restarted, and the screen displayed a gray battery alternating with a circular progress animation. Reading all the advice out there, and based on previous experience, I waited. And I waited some more. I went to watch a couple of TV shows and 90 minutes later it was doing the same thing. I pulled the USB, no affect; really nothing left I did a battery pull. When I returned the battery to the phone it went into a loop displaying the AT&T logo following by a black screen. Then I spent a few hours, seriously, trying to get the phone into the Download mode following what I read in the forums. I was unable to do the three button process so I cannibalized my Kindle USB to get a connector to make a jig. I had the resistors I needed to get the 301K I needed, soldered it all together and was able to get the phone in Download Mode. When I plug and unplug the phone I hear Windows make the sound it makes when it finds a USB device. I tried to use Odin to restore to factory, it said it was successful, the phone restarted, back to the gray battery and the spinning progress bar. Now when I run Odin, plug in the phone Odin doesn’t see the phone even though Windows does. Please, how can I get a working ROM on my phone?
Thanks,
Brian

Have you tried one of the One click stock odins? Try that and see what happens
It might help you to note that that battery+spinner screen is what happens when you plug in the cable with the phone completely off - it's supposed to do that. This allows you to charge the battery with the phone off. You should be able to just press power and boot.
The boot might fail, but that battery screen alone isn't an indicator of any problem, it's just what's supposed to happen when your phone is off and plugged in.
This is assuming I'm reading your post correctly, of course.
I've had trouble getting Odin to work before, but never had it claim success and then be unable to boot (I've recovered from a complete soft brick twice now, yay DIY experimenting).
I just did a workstation restart, battery pull in the phone, put it back in Download mode with the jig, executed Odin, connected the phone and Windows sees it as a Samsung Composite USB device, hit start on Odin3, Odin returns this message and here it sits:
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
Put your phone in download mode after connecting to USB and it should work

I know there are more than one version of Odin, do I need to look for a specific one? Obviously I need one for the Captivate.

When I first read this my jaw dropped. I was trying to remember if I tried powering on. Well Odin completed a moment ago and when I powered up it went back to the looping between AT&T and a black screen. If only were that simple.
when Odin fails you, you are doomed!
I'm kidding... but really... good luck
Look in the development section for an Odin 1 click, this will flash you back to stock... open Odin on your comp first...then plug in your usb and goto download mode, for me I have to take my battery out, plug in usb, hold both volume keys and insert battery while holding them...and then it goes to download mode and Odin sees it, its the only way I can get it to flash successfully, ...
As long as you can get into download mode, its not bricked... just finding the right combo can sometimes be tricky
EDIT
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I'm trying to be nice, what you need to do is figure out if odin 1 click will work. Without that it will be very hard to recover.
I (we) fixed it! The link below had the combination of files and steps to make this bad boy boot up.

Thanks to all of you for any contribution. What pointed me the right direction was drilling down and searching for specific versions of Odin rather than "unbrick" my phone. It was that search that led to this link. Several folks above mentioned Odin, thank you.
What I didn't say in my original post, because I didn't want to sound any more pathetic than I already did was, I worked on this issue from noon yesterday until 2:00AM this morning. I was back up at 5:30 and worked on it pretty much continuously until now. I really do have the flu and I feel like crap, but the good feeling that comes with not having a bricked phone has been restored. I *know* you all understand. I am crawling back in bed where I should have been all along.
Thanks again!
Brian
I'm pretty sure I bricked my captive. I have the phone-!-computer icon whenever I try to turn it on. I was using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439 that guide to give me the three button fix but when I went to pick up my phone during the process the batter slipped out(it wasn't secure -.-) and now I'm stuck at that icon. Please tell me there's some way to unbrick my phone.
Hold down both volume buttons and plug it in. If it goes into download mode you can just flash with odin. If not you need to make a jig. Search around for both these. Either way, you should be good.
I'm guessing my phone was either a newer or older version so the volume+power buttons won't work to get it into the download mode. I guess I'll try a jig tomorrow.
On eBay I will find 1 for 10 dls or so its always good to have 1 of those next to ur pillow so u can sleep well

That is true, I was freaking out and hoping I didn't have the most expensive paperweight in the world until I started searching around and found that a jig is my last hope.
Here is a guide I made which covers the Phone--!--PC problem..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012769
I had that same problem with my captivate, and didn't realize at the time that mine didn't come with the 3 button fix either. What always works (although you might have to do it a couple times because the timing has to be pretty precise) is take the battery out, plug the USB cord (after you plug it into your computer) into the phone while holding the volume up and down buttons at once. Then (with the cord in and the volume buttons still held), put the battery back in. This will work, even if your phone doesn't come with the 3 button fix.
After the phone works, be sure to flash the 3buttonfix.zip file. Do a google search and find the xda thread on it.
If you are going to get a jig, get it from mobiletechvideos.com. They are only $8, and come from a reliable source. If you get it on ebay you never know the quality. For this problem, you certainly won't need a jig. It is actually very difficult to hard brick a captivate, which is partly due to the fact that the bootloader is unlocked. Be sure you have the captivate insurance from AT&T.

The thing is your guide doesn't say what to do if Odin can't even detect your phone.
As for just holding the volume buttons, nothing happens. just stays at the phone-!-PC icon.
Next time put the battery cover back on before starting the process. Lesson learned.

Be sure to do what I said above. The problem is actually very easy to solve but you need the right sequence of button/usb/battery
Phone--!--PC is just a download mode. If the computer does not recognize the phone, reinstall drivers, reboot and pull the battery out, then try again.
Try THIS out. See if that fixes it.

Ok heres the past 12 hours of my phones life. I instalaled Zeus V5 with the ICS theme, I flashed Entropy's latest daily kernel. I was setting up my phone back to what I had it at before I restored it. It was working perfect at about 3:00 AM CST. I plugged it in and went to sleep. When I woke up at about 11:00 AM CST. My phone was off. I assumed it just shut off so I tried turning it on...nothing. I tried the 3 button push and nothing. I then took my battery out and put it back and still nothing. I've tried removing the sd the sim and the battery and then plugging it in. I've tried DL mode in several different ways. I've used different computers, different cables, different wall outlets. No matter what I can't get a single thing to detect this phone and it won't respond to any amount of button pushes...So if anyone can help me fix my phone I will send you either 50 bucks through paypal or a 50 dollar giftcard. Mine did this, but it was when I was messing with different ROM's and kernels, etc. It just plain shut off. Nothing would work, not the 3 button, anything. So I pulled the battery, put it back in and plugged in my jig I bought from Mobile Tech Videos, $8 at the time, and it went into download mode. From there I went to GTG's Ultimate Unbrick, and I was fine. Try it, if you have a jig. If it works, then cool, and you don't owe me a thing.
try following the GTG unbrick up above with the odin.
i recall a post a while ago from someone who had bricked their phone and it seemed to be like yours, and one of the responses was that even though the screen didn't show up as download mode, it was still connected and able to odin properly.
when you plugged it into your computer in download mode, did odin pick it up?
You guys don't pay attention to what you read. He said, Nothing comes up on the screen and he can not put it on DL mode.
I would try getting a battery or if you know someone with an infuse, barrow the battery and see if that works. If that doesn't work, try the Jig. I'm sure with the JIG you will be able to bring back your phone from SOD...
GL
Ok guys, took it to AT&T and the guy tried like 4 new batteries. It is NOT the battery. He doesn't know what's wrong with it but then again I didn't tell them about the ROMS or rooting(duh) there is not physical or water damage at all. Anyone else??

Based on the description, since it had a functional ROM and died later on not in the middle of a flash:
1) Battery dead as a doornail - I BELIEVE that with certain types of jigs (potentially not the standard one) the device will turn on without a battery so this could be confirmed. If so, you might be able to fix it with a new battery OR topping off the battery in an external charger.
2) Total hardware failure of some sort, highly likely going beyond a brick. (e.g. even if you JTAGed a good bootloader it would still be dead - probably because the bootloader is still good.)

this exactly!!... take your time ..do it right...you can do it....
o wait thats a song!!!
but seriously ..read it ALL!! and follow instructions very carefully ..i had to download ubuntu.. my phone "died" just a blank screen and this got me back!!!
good luck !!
Like I stated before. Mine did the same thing. Black screen, no power, 3-button didn't work. My jig popped in into download mode, and GTG's unbrick from there. I leanred a long time ago, to always have my jig with me. Love my jig! Thanks MTV! best $8 I ever spent.
I'm sure you tried this but I actually never use three buttons to get into download mode. I just insert the battery, hold down the two volume buttons and, while holding the buttons, I plug in the usb that's plugged into the computer. Flame me if this is obvious but I didn't see anyone suggest it.
hey faux ..how long have you had this phone and how long have you been with ATT?
JUST MAKING SURE... You have kies installed on your computer right???

Had the phone about 6 months...att for 3 and a half years. IDK what "Jig you're talking about or else I might try it if I can easily get one today and it doesn't have to be shipped. I'd rather not try the unbrickable thing because my phone as of right now is in warranty I'd rather not void it. And yes I did the two button DL mode. Not 3.
