Stock Inspire
Using stock e-mail program
If I have unread e-mail messages, the phone will beep with the sound notification every time it checks for mail, until I open the e-mail app. Even if I have not received any new mail, it will beep when it checks for mail until I open the program.
So if I receive a message at 1pm, and it it set to check for mail every 10 minutes, I will receive a sound notification at 1:10, 1:20, 1:30, etc. until I actually open the e-mail app.
Is this normal? Is there a setting I can chage where it will only beep once upon receipt of a new message? I looked thru the settings and couldn't find anything.
Thanks.

Anyone else experiencing this?
This is happening for me too on Gmail.
It is also happening with my txt message. In addition to that, when it plays my txt msg notification, at the very same time it plays my default sound (so it is playing two sounds at the same time).
Are there setting for these that I haven't seen yet?
Thanks.

Do you have a third party messaging program like Handcent or Chomp installed?

How do you turn off specific notifications?
I just received my Inspire today and I'm having similar issues.
I've used Windows Mobile and iPhone for years. This is my first Android phone.
Everything is right out of the box with the stock ROM and no additional apps loaded. The only thing I did was setup my Exchange email accounts.
With Windows Mobile and the iPhone I was able to turn off notifications for new emails, but leave it on for text messages and calendar reminders. I receive a large number of emails and I need to have the email notification sound and vibration turned off.
So far I have found where to set your notification sound and where to turn off all notification sounds. I have not figured out how to turn offf just the email notification sound.
Each program has its own notification settings.
Go to mail -> menu - > more - > settings -> notification settings and there you are.
In gmail - menu -> more -> settings -> scroll down to email notifications
Messages - menu -> settings -> received notification

Thanks for the quick response.
An an Android newbie, I was looking for it in the main settings app, not in the mail program itself. I was able to turn off the email notifications and keep the other notifications on.

That is one of the big difference in iOS and Android. In Android you use the menu button within the app you are using to set the specific settings for that app. In iOS you go to the settings area to change setting for all of the apps. It took me a while to get used to when I made the switch last year. I got used to it and now it just makes sense to change settings within the program, not have to leave the program and do it somewhere else.

Does anyone know how I can disable the annoying "new email notification" that comes out of pocket outlook every time it syncs with the mail server?
I sync my Pocket PC with my Exchange Server and I've tried to turn off the new mail message notification in "settings", "notifications", but that doesn't seem to have made any difference....
Thanks...
I am searching diligently for this solution too. I have it set to check email every ten minutes and unless I view the email (dismiss won't do it), it continues to alert me to new email.
Any help would be appreciated.
Bump.
Has anyone found a solution to this? I have the HTC Touch Pro.
Thanks!
Same here....so want to disable the notification.
did you try settings->events and notifications->notifications
pick messaging new e-mail message
and uncheck the box's ?
Crieky! That was it... Sorry, Windows Mobile is new to me.
sound..
This only removes the sound... I would like the sound, but not the cartoon-speech-bubble indication a for the notification. Same goes for missed calls and SMS'es actually. I mean, I have a 'missed calls' indicator on the today-screen, and SMS and EMAIL show a number next to the touch-flo icon so I can't see why I need the notification-screen at all...

On the same Sounds & Notifications menu you have to untick "Display message on screen"
Hi..stupid question but i cannot seem to get my phone to vibrate whenever I receive a text or notification..can someone tell me where i can go to set this?
I tried going into settings, sound and display but i do not have vibrate as a selection in the notification ringtone tab.
Is there an app i can download that allows me to customize my sounds?
thanks!
the settings for notifications are within each messaging application. if you go to your sms application, hit the options button and go into settings. at the bottom you will find the notification settings, including vibrate and a ringtone selection. notifications for each of your messaging apps are configured this way.

Nothing you can do about that in android. Thats the default android vibrate for notifications. I think it sucks too, its way too short and too soft of a vibration.
What you can do is install SMS Popup. Go into settings on that app and enable notifications on it. It has more options for SMS notifications, like you can set a really long vibration. Just remember to then go into the Android messaging app and turn off notifications there, otherwise you'll get double notifications. This will only help fix the problem for SMS messages. I think android still sucks on incoming notifications for other items like emails, etc.
I REALLY like SMS Popup, its great.
whats the best custom setting. i am trying to set it so it virbates alot and i can feel it
I have a Samsung Charge, and I have noticed that every time I receive a new GMail message, I get two notifications.
I started turning off various notification sources, but I still get an audible ring & phone vibration whenever a new GMail message arrives.
Where is the mystery / duplicate notification coming from?
Thanks,

Which notification sources have you turned off?
The GMail app has its own notification source. And, I *think*, you can set it per account (not sure).
There is also Sound setting Notifications, not sure if GMail leverages that or not.
Are you using any third-party email applications?

I have my GMail set for "Email Notifications" disabled. I would think that would be enough to prevent getting GMail notifications.
I also have ADW Notifier installed, but it doesn't really have anything about displaying notifications other than the number bubble. Regardless, I uninstalled ADW Notifier, and didn't see any difference.
I also have K-9 Mail. I turned off all notifications on that, and also saw no effect. K-9 doesn't even interface with my GMail, so I don't see where it would make a difference anyways.
I don't have any other apps that should be associated to my mail programs.
Bump.
I have found that I only get the "Notification That Can't Be Killed" now just with new GMail messages. No other "mystery" notifications are occurring.
To see if I could fix this, I started using the TouchWiz Email application to consolidate all my email accounts, including GMail. I got rid of my K-9 mail app.
Now, I get a silent GMail notification from the TouchWiz Email app (which is what I want), but it seems like I still get an audible default notification tone from Google's GMail application whenever new GMail arrives.
I can't figure out why the GMail app Notifications are occurring. I think I have them all disabled, but I must be missing something ...
Please help ...

I have found one solution to fix this problem, though it shouldn't be necessary:
I purchased "Bloat Freezer", and "froze" the Google Gmail system application.
I'm curious (though, I didn't see many responses to this thread), has anyone tried turning off their GMail notifications in the Google GMail app?
I am wondering if turning off GMail Notifications even works on the SamChg.
I'll try later this evening when I'm not at work.
I actually always run my phone in silent mode, I am kind of against ringtones, chimes, etc. and thus have never had any issues with Gmail notifications because I've never needed to really turn them off.
I'll report back.

Thanks, burningembers! I'll be interested in what you find out.
BTW, I don't know if this is important, but I am running the Debloated v.4 ROM.
Sent via my Borg implant over the VZW network.
I have another nugget of information on this problem.
I unfroze the GMail application, and set my SamChg to sync my GMail again. However, in the GMail application, I set a different notification tone than the default notification.
Now, when I receive a new GMail, I get 2 audible notifications: One for the newly selected notification tone in the GMail application, and a second tone that is my default notification tone. Sometimes, they will play simultaneously.
I'm guessing that undesired, second "default" notification tone is generated as a result of the Google "account sync" itself.
How can I turn this off? And, again - Can anyone test this out for me to see if it is a global problem, or just my configuration?
Thanks!
Is anybody successfully using chompSMS as their default text app and getting all of texting features on their watch? (I have a Galxy S6 on Verizon in the US).
Following an old thread for this issue on the Gear 1, I was able to get most of the features working. The issue, lies with the fact that the watch wants you to use the default messaging app "Messages" on Samsung phones (which is horrible). I have notifications for the default "Messages" app turned on and silenced on my phone and not showing notifications to prevent duplicates on my phone. I will copy the process from the other thread and link it below.
The best I am currently achieving is that when I receive a text on my phone, I get the chompSMS notification on the watch and can quick reply to it by viewing the text through the notification screen, or when it firsts pops up on the watch face. But if I go to the "Messages" app on the watch to look through a conversation, all I can see are the sent messages from the phone, and not the replies. I am unsure if this is because part of the chompSMS functions are working, or part of the "Messages" app on the phone are working. Either way, Id like to be able to see both the sent and received texts here.
Upon opening the "Messages" app on the watch, I get the message "Unable to receive messages on the Gear. Change the default messaging app to "Messages". I just skip past it to get to the messages.
Has anyone been able to get all of this working with chompSMS? I am unwilling to switch apps on my phone but if you have gotten other apps working, the process could be helpful to me. I would think there would be a way to trick the phone to use two default messaging apps or trick into not requiring one. I haven't rooted my phone but would consider if somebody has gotten it to work that way.

This is what I did...
I uninstalled Go SMS (I'm not sure if this is necessary), and reinstalled.
In the Go SMS :
In the "Notification Settings":
Enable Notifications --> checked.
In the Defualt notification settings:
Vibrate --> checked.
Blink LED -- checked.
In the "Other setting" menu:
Disable other message notification -- Un-checked
In the stock messaging app:
Under "More" tab:
Notifications --> checked
Select ringtone -- > set to "silent"
Vibrate --> Un-checked
Preview message --> checked.
Open the Application manager in the settings of the phone:
Swipe over to the "ALL" tab, and scroll down until you find the "Messages" app. Un-check "show notifications" This will prevent double notifications in the panel.
This should do it. When I received a text, the first time I clicked "show on device", the option popped up on the phone to select the default program between Go SMS and stock messaging. I clicked Go SMS, and set to "Always". Now it opens up Go SMS everytime.
Hope this helps some of you!
Thanks for any help you guys. Much appreciated.
I receive, reply & send with ChompSMS on my watch. I use the messages app on the watch, it *****es that you need different default message app but just click the "X" and send away.

so when you go to the messages app on the watch, you are able to see texts that you send using chomp from your phone? maybe i need to do a reset on my watch..
How do you have the notifications and alerts set up to achieve this?
anyone else have any insight?
I use Handcent and can't get it to work either. The watch always tell me to change the default messaging app. I asked Handcent (through their facebook page) several weeks ago if they were going to update it to support the Gear S2 and they have totally ignored me (and anybody else that posts there). They have a google group now that I submitted a request to join WEEKS ago and its still pending. Because of that, I switched to the default messaging app so it would work on the watch. Apparently handcent isn't interested in helping people that use their app. Perhaps you have better luck with ChompSMS than I have had with Handcent.

Interstingly, I emailed the people at chompSMS the other day and they got back to me very quickly that they have notified the dev team about it (who knows what will come of that).
It seems simple enough. In fact even if the third party apps could be used without being the default messenger, and not show the "make default app" banner when you use them, everything would work great. You'd just follow the instructions i linked above and all the features would work because the stock Messages app would be the default but not be giving you notifications.

I have noticed that it only syncs what I typed to others in the message app, but when i'm texting it show the interaction between who im texting. There is no special config, just make sure Chomp is selected in GM Notifications
here's the scenario
1. I receive an email from AAA
2. pop up shows with sender AAA and part of the message
3. I receive an email from BBB
4. instead of popup with sender BBB I still ee a pop up with sender AAA
Anyone has noticed the same issue?
I think the notification is compressed to show only 1 notification (within that same app) rather than listing out the emails that you received for that app.
For me I see list of emails I received so I see all the sender names (AAA, BBB, CCC, etc. with one line content detail).
I recall that it's a setting for the notification that you have to change to list outrather than show only one.
Try ... Settings > notification > Advanced Settings > Show notification icons > select All notifications
There a new always on display update out maybe maybe there's a notification fix in there
I can't seem to get it to install keep getting the error
app not installed as package appears to be invalid

I'm using the COMPACT style.
Gmail by default does not have popup 3nabled though, so I had to change this into settings.
As I said, what is strange is that whatsapp or other messaging apps work ok: first popup I see A, second popup I see B, while with Gmail it's always A, that is the very first I receive.
I'll try to get a screen recording.
