tether inspire 4g to viewsonic g tablet - HTC Inspire 4G

Will this phone work to tether to my g tablet?
what do I have to do?

Yes but it depends how you go about it. 1.) Pay att a monthly tether fee or 2.)Root the phone and runn wifi tether

So this phone can be rooted? My old backflip couldn't.

I just Googled "root backflip" and Google seems to think differently, though I've never had one so I can't speak first hand.
There are threads in the Development section and a video somewhere in this section that will show you how to get root on the Inspire.

If your g tablet is anything like my galaxy tab u either need to root using the hack kit and that will enable the HTC WiFi hotspot app or if u wanna use the WiFi tether app that Google made u need to set up your g tablet so it can recognize an ad hoc connection.

The Wifi Tether for root users creates an Ad-Hoc network. Android devices (your tablet) cannot connect to Ad-Hoc networks.
The built in wifi tethering (when the hardware supports it) creates an infrastructure network - which any android device can connect to.

[Q] Cant find my wireless tether

I have a hero and it's rooted. I'm using the wireless tether but for some reason I can't see it with my xoom? but on my laptop I can see it and i've successfully connected it. Does anyone have this problem or am I just not doing something right.
US 3g 3.1 Motorola xoom stock (no root)
Your phone needs to emit infrastructure, not ad hoc.........
I had the same problem until I switched apps. I use Open Garden Wifi Tether now and that fixed the problem for me.

If your Xoom is rooted just flash the .zip in my signature and it will see the ad-hoc network your phone puts out.
I see upon re-reading your post you are not rooted... Root your Xoom... lol
never !! hahah and qsg001, i'll try it out thanks
I guess I should have mentioned that your phone has to be rooted to run the Open Garden WIFI Tether app (at least it does on my Motor Droid).

[Q] re: trying to root a Kyocera Hydro

My service is with Boost Mobile. I have been trying to root the Kyocera Hydro phone I have so I can turn on the wifi hotspot and tethering. I was told by a factory rep and Amazon that this phone can do that job. Boost Mobile says it can't. Boost Mobile says the only 2 phones that will do wifi hotspot and tethering on thair service is the Samsung Galaxy s2 and the HTC Veo. I can't afford ether one new. I was also told by a person online that has been pointing me to online articles about rooting phones. Starting with the fundamentals of rooting. That this phone can do the wifi hotspot and tethering if rooted. I have gotten real deep into my phone. though I am not shure it is rooted. I see a lot of files that look a lot like windows operation/system files. But I know enough not to do anything with them beyond looking. If i can't get this phone to do wifi hotspot and tethering. Then can someone please tell me what phone would be good for what I need, for what I can afford or trade for. I got the Kyocera Hydro new from Amazon for $150.00 Other then the wifi hotspot and tethering this phone has suited my needs well. Sometimes (but not often enough to buy a separate cell phone type usb device) I take my laptop out on Amateur Radio demo's were there isn't a open wifi to tie into. That's why I need the wifi hotspot and tethering. I always have some kind of a/c power to plug into at the site.

I would also like to know how to tether... I've already rooted my kyocera hydro tho and only thing i'm having trouble with is finding a working app that will allow me to tether to my laptop. Right now i'm using my gfs galaxy s2 (t-mobile) and it works great for playing hearthstone. The only app i've found that works with the hydro is SVTP WIFI USB Tethering Lite. Bad thing is it only works for 2 days and then it wont work anymore. So i rooted my phone thinking that would work but it still doesn't and I would buy the Pro version but the app store wont allow me to since it says my provider (boost) doesn't allow it. If you could point me in the right direction as to how to tether I would really appreciate it.
i got my friends kyocera hydro rooted.
trying to find a working method to make it a 3g mobile hotspot over wifi connection
anyone know an app that actually works or a method to get it done?
does any proxies need to be disabled in any hidden menus?
The app is called "wifi tether for root user". Its on the play store but I can never find with store app. Do a google search it will show in the google play apps link. You will need to change device profile to "generic ics/jb wlan0". Best tethering app you can get.
Can you tell my how you rooted your hydro?

[Q] Thinking about Picking up an M8

I have really only used moto phones in the past so bear with me.
1) Will I be able to ROM the M8?
2) What is the difficulty in ROMing the phone compared to a Moto w/ safestrap?
3) Is there an app similar to moto hotspot or can HTC phones only tether? Can it be unlocked?
4) How will the 3 above questions compare / contrast to an S5?
Thanks!
-Justin
You can't ROM the M8 yet as the boot loader isn't unlocked.
Don't really understand #3 but there is a Verizon hotspot app. And by unlocked do you mean to use on other carriers?
Can't really answer #4 because the S5 isn't out yet

You can Rom the Moto Phones with locked bootloaders, just with ROMs that are derived from the factory one, no CM etc. So the M8 will be similar in this regard? On another forum someone was telling me the selling point over the S5 was that the bootloader will be unlocked. So I guess this probably requires a GPE phone then, and isn't much of a selling point for me since I cant use a GPE phone on verizon...
By unlocked I mean free hotspot, the moto phones come with a motorolla hotspot which is quite easy to hack / unlock for use (the hotspot does not work otherwise without paying for it).
Some people do have their hands on the S5, but I guess I can assume it would be locked down similar to the S4. Are Samsung phones locked down any differently than the HTC Phones or are all companies locking the bootloader on verizon phones now?
Thanks,
Justin.

1) Eventually
2) Since we can't ROM it yet, we don't know
3) There's a thread about getting the built in tethering to work, look
4) How the hell would we know? The S5 isn't even out yet.

Tethering is not the same as hotspot though... So is there a tethering app or a hotspot app?

Yes, there's a hotspot app. The hotspot app isn't anything unique to any given manufacturer. It's a part of the Android OS.
The question is, can you use it or not without paying. If you don't have unlimited data it shouldn't cost you anything. If you have unlimited data you have to pay as of right now. There isn't any hack to disable the Verizon check at this time. Won't be until we get access to the system partition.

Interesting, again coming from motorolla:
Teathering = single device can connect.
Wifi hotspot = multiple devices can connect.
But that's the way it has been in the past with my moto phones so please forgive me since I guess this has changed.

Is the hotspot app called Mobile hotspot?
On my motorolla with root I can use dSQLiteManager and flip a bit in the com.motorolla.android.providers.settings DB and enable the free hotspot. If I lose this ability with HTC M8 I guess I will have to look into another motorolla phone. Or at least I will have to hold off for now.
It's the same app as Moto has. It's an Android thing. And, yes, it's called Mobile Hotspot. All phones I've had up until now were Motos. It's the same thing.
However, like I said before, there is no hack for it yet. One of the first things I did when we got root was check for the entitlement check thing using sqlite and that entry isn't there anymore. From what I can find, it sounds like the newer Moto phones don't have it either. I did come across a hack for the M7 which involves editing an xml file but haven't tried it. My guess is you'd have to reboot to get it to take effect and given the way root works on this phone, the change wouldn't stick after you rebooted the phone.
USB tethering works fine though. However, if the hotspot is a must for you, you better wait or else plan on paying for it, at least for a while.

I mostly use it with my Android Nook HD+, so I don't think USB tether would work, but that's not worth $30 a month to simply use a larger screen. I would assume if there is no hack for the M7 their probably will not be for the M8 then. Thanks for everyones help.
There is one for the M7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699200
Well, that might or might not help. If the Nook can't see an adhoc network, it's no good in this case. I have a Xoom that wouldn't see one when it was stock. A lot of devices require infrastructure mode which the hotspot is. The Nook may or may not support adhoc. But like I said, some devices require it (infrastructure). I have a laptop that doesn't work with adhoc mode. So, it's not just related to mobile devices.
