NEWBIE and LOST - G Tablet General

Ok so I'm new to android! Thinking about purchasing the G tablet. I have read the following articles plus some
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
I don't understand the process first.
Do I setup ADB, root, then install clockworkmod, then custom rom vegantab, tnt or whatever?

I'm a total newbie to android and I just did all that last week.
I put clockwork and vegan on and then did the market fix, all following your second link. It works brilliantly.
I would ignore that first link you posted.

Exactly. I did this all last week too. Follow the second thread. Good luck and have fun

Much thanks.. The motorola xoom will be coming out soon with honeycomb. Samsung and LG are also producing honeycomb 3.0 android tablets. do you think i should just wait? I just wonder if the g tablet is upgradeable to 3.0

I followed the 2nd link you posted paying attention to all the details and had it running with Vegan 5.1.1 in less than an hour.

yes it seems hard at first but jsut reread everything and you will be fine.

[Q] How can i get new market on Vegan beta 3

when i was running tnt lite 3.1 and i think 2.2, i had the new style market. i've switched to Vegan Beta, which i like more, but can't figure out how to get my market to update. i have all the market apps, i just want the new style theme. anybody know how to do this?
Follow the directions in Part 3 of this guide...

I'm running Vegan b3 too and it worked well for me. Follow the directions that were substituted in post #3 in that thread. It clarifies something that i had a question about while I was loading them up. Should work well.

i did exactly what these directions said, but still no new market. i should probably clarify that i do have the market working completely, but it's in the old style and not the revised new interface. that's what i would like to have. i don't have any issues with the market not working, i just want the new interface vs the old one. does the Vegan beta 3 just not support it? do i need to update to beta 4 for the new market.
does no one know how to do this? am i the only one that has this problem?

[Q] Factory Reset Data?

I bought my g tablet in late November and as a newbie I managed to get it to the point that it ran flash, played angry birds and had the Google market from the great help I found on these threads. I ran out of free time to tweak it and muddle through the technical speak in the threads so now I am unsure if I can update the TnT version or if I should factory reset and follow one of the great newbie threads on this site to update since I can't remember exactly what I did to get where I am with it. Please be gentle- I know I'm a spaz and should have paid more attention to the steps I took originally.

Ok u r running the latest stock version. A new version 3991 is in testing now and may be out soon. A major change with many of the changes in roebeets enhancement pack. I would just wait a few days.
Ok- Thanks so much for your help!
brandyc,
I agree. If your time and memory are limited -- and your G-Tablet is working well -- leave well enough alone.
All the current ROMs have their unique features, but in the end there is getting to be less and less difference in the alternate ROMs and stock. It's fun to play, but not necessary!
I have two tablets -- one on TNT Lite 5.0.1 and one stock 3991. Both work great!

The step is very similar to install TNT lite. Instead of using the TNT lite.zip file, replace it with the vegan.5.1.zip file.
The key is make sure you get the correct version of clockworkmod.

This 1.2-based release is probably the most important change to the GTablet

Not for the reasons you think, though. For users, it may not seem to be a big change. But for devs/modders here it is a MAJOR change. It is going to create a lot of problems and modders here will need to make some decisions, quickly.
I am not permitted to tell you my own plans, other than this:
1- TNT Lite is going to be retired and will not developed anymore. This is true EVERYWHERE, not just on XDA.
2- TwoTapsX is replacing TNT Lite as my active "mostly stock" ROM, after this weekend. I have been waiting for a month to make this decision, and now I finally can. I will NOT be hosting TwoTapsX here, other than a link (if permitted) - it was based on TNT Lite 5 and that mod was not welcomed here as it was felt to be "too risky". No matter what is being said, the fact of the matter is that TNT Lite 5 / TTx was ultimately pulled due to pressure from power users and one moderator here, because of soft-brickage. That it the truth. And then I left it down until VS showed us what path they would be taking. These same soft-bricks will now occur for 4349 users, which is why I have asked people to tread very carefully.
3- gADAM is going to be retired, as well (EVERYWHERE, not just here on XDA). I will re-do it as a "1.2" based mod, if I can, with a new name.
So, my "1.1" based mods aren't moving, they are actually being retired everywhere. Moderators, please make a note of this. I will be updating this information everywhere, today. That's the decision I've made as Viewsonic has shown us where they are headed and I will follow that path.

Hey Roebeet
Are you going to be working on a procedure for the folks that have tntlite 4.40 (me) to upgrade to TNTLite 5.0 now that the newer bootloader is out. I know that you will be doing this on a different site. Just now sure if this was coming anytime in the near future..
Also do you think it is still a big high risk to go with the TNTlite 5.0 or the risk has reduced dramatically.
thanks for all your help again.
SO, I got my 2nd gtab yesterday and updated to 3588 and then 4349. Are you saying I will have issues going to TwoTapsX when it is ready?
If you use stock recovery...
I think if you run fixrecovery.sh you get the stock boot loader and posts to other threads say that it will update to the new Viewsonic release. I'd expect that means you can also use it to upgrade to a new version of TwoTapsX from Roebeet.
BTW, thanks Roebeet for all your efforts. I use TNTL and love it and think TwoTapsX was fine for people who paid attention.

I'm going to be spending most of my day today doing my day job, and also testing scenarios to make sure gADAM 1.3.0+ and TNT Lite 4.3.0+ users have an upgrade path. I had started planning this last month because of UAT 3991, so I put in failsafes in both of those mods to reduce the risk. I just need to fully test all that out.
Rule of thumb if you are a 1.1-ROM user: As long as you use standard 3588 recovery, the risk is much lower. For mods I don't support, I built out the 3588 Recovery Pack specifically to prepare users for this jump. That's the reason why that pack exists: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005080

It should be a safe upgrade. I'd have a build for you today, but it's just a question of time - I want to test more scenarios first before I start building out 1.2-based mods. TwoTapsX will not be hosted here, as it was not welcome here. It will be hosted elsewhere and I will link to it, if I'm permitted to.
I wrote this elsewhere, but think of "1.1" and "1.2" as two cliffs, separated by a rickety bridge (standard recovery). Once you are on one side or the other, the risk is low as long as you stay in the same development branch.
Ok, I've been reading these threads and am a little confused... should only users who have ROMs based off of (or utilizing - is that a better term?) VS's releases the ones who need to care about this update?
I am on Vegan-TAB 5.1.1 ... does this use the VS release in anyway? Or am I not affected at all, and can just keep my ROM the way it is and be on my merry way..?
Thanks!

I would recommend just using your ROM. The concern here is if you want to upgade to something else later. All the soft-brickage is happening if you flash your device to another ROM.

what are your thoughts on the locked bootloader roebeet?
What's different in the new bootloader apart from incompatibility with legacy boot images? Does it require different boot image format? Do we know how to build boot images compatible with new bootloader? If we don't - it's a dead end and we should better find a downgrade path.

[Q] What is a stock ROM?

I recently got a XOOM (U.S. WIFI-only) in July. It came shipped with 3.0.1
Within a day, it got updated to 3.1
and within about a week it went to 3.2
I wish to root my XOOM and eventually put on TIAMAT 2.1
When I go to the XDA forum it seems I need to get to "stock" 3.1 first.
I am guessing that this means I need to do a factory reset on my XOOM
to get back to 3.0.1 then do the update to 3.1
Once I am able to do this I should be able to follow their instructions
and root my device. Is this correct?
On a related matter, if someone were to purchase a XOOM now and it came
with 3.2, would they be unable to root the device?
Thanks.

Hey there! No need to go to downgrade or anything any longer if you would like to root. Team Tiamat themselves have released a universal rooting tool that will root any Xoom regardless of the country it came from, model, or Honeycomb version. It can be found here.
Also: You might want to check out my Xoom Heaven thread after you are rooted. It would be perfect for a new Xoom rooter. You can find the link in my sig below, or by going here.
Good luck!
Can you get Tiamat 2.1 when you have stock 3.2? Or does the stock ROM not matter at all since it's getting replaced?

You cannot do that until you gain root access first. That's how you get there in the first place: a stock rooted Rom.
So, no.. the stock Rom does not matter. As long as you have root access on it, all is well.
diablo2224,
You are a life saver! Prior to my post I spent a couple of hours going through all
the posts of rooting the xoom in this article:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760
It was here I felt the need to understand what "stock" meant -- however, when I
registered I was told that I cannot post to that thread
So I posted here.
I checked out your Xoom Heaven and was blown away! Great Job!
After I submitted my post, I thought to myself that after I rooted my Xoom I would
put together something like what you have done -- looks like you beat me
to it. Bravo!
It looks like you put a lot of work into it ... so I feel extra lucky that somehow you
found the time to even read my question.
Thanks again.

Hey, no problem! It's what I do around here. Glad you got it all sorted out, and yes... Xoom Heaven is a lot of work indeed. I'm nowhere near finished, but as it stands I have made great progress.
Of course I read your question. When I'm not working on something I'm looking around for people to help out. Cheers!
Also: Since I am in charge of Xoom Heaven... feel free to ask me any root questions, or anything else Xoom related on my thread there. I'll be happy to do my best to assist you.
