This 1.2-based release is probably the most important change to the GTablet - G Tablet General

Not for the reasons you think, though. For users, it may not seem to be a big change. But for devs/modders here it is a MAJOR change. It is going to create a lot of problems and modders here will need to make some decisions, quickly.
I am not permitted to tell you my own plans, other than this:
1- TNT Lite is going to be retired and will not developed anymore. This is true EVERYWHERE, not just on XDA.
2- TwoTapsX is replacing TNT Lite as my active "mostly stock" ROM, after this weekend. I have been waiting for a month to make this decision, and now I finally can. I will NOT be hosting TwoTapsX here, other than a link (if permitted) - it was based on TNT Lite 5 and that mod was not welcomed here as it was felt to be "too risky". No matter what is being said, the fact of the matter is that TNT Lite 5 / TTx was ultimately pulled due to pressure from power users and one moderator here, because of soft-brickage. That it the truth. And then I left it down until VS showed us what path they would be taking. These same soft-bricks will now occur for 4349 users, which is why I have asked people to tread very carefully.
3- gADAM is going to be retired, as well (EVERYWHERE, not just here on XDA). I will re-do it as a "1.2" based mod, if I can, with a new name.
So, my "1.1" based mods aren't moving, they are actually being retired everywhere. Moderators, please make a note of this. I will be updating this information everywhere, today. That's the decision I've made as Viewsonic has shown us where they are headed and I will follow that path.

Hey Roebeet
Are you going to be working on a procedure for the folks that have tntlite 4.40 (me) to upgrade to TNTLite 5.0 now that the newer bootloader is out. I know that you will be doing this on a different site. Just now sure if this was coming anytime in the near future..
Also do you think it is still a big high risk to go with the TNTlite 5.0 or the risk has reduced dramatically.
thanks for all your help again.

SO, I got my 2nd gtab yesterday and updated to 3588 and then 4349. Are you saying I will have issues going to TwoTapsX when it is ready?

If you use stock recovery...
I think if you run fixrecovery.sh you get the stock boot loader and posts to other threads say that it will update to the new Viewsonic release. I'd expect that means you can also use it to upgrade to a new version of TwoTapsX from Roebeet.
BTW, thanks Roebeet for all your efforts. I use TNTL and love it and think TwoTapsX was fine for people who paid attention.

I'm going to be spending most of my day today doing my day job, and also testing scenarios to make sure gADAM 1.3.0+ and TNT Lite 4.3.0+ users have an upgrade path. I had started planning this last month because of UAT 3991, so I put in failsafes in both of those mods to reduce the risk. I just need to fully test all that out.
Rule of thumb if you are a 1.1-ROM user: As long as you use standard 3588 recovery, the risk is much lower. For mods I don't support, I built out the 3588 Recovery Pack specifically to prepare users for this jump. That's the reason why that pack exists: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005080

It should be a safe upgrade. I'd have a build for you today, but it's just a question of time - I want to test more scenarios first before I start building out 1.2-based mods. TwoTapsX will not be hosted here, as it was not welcome here. It will be hosted elsewhere and I will link to it, if I'm permitted to.
I wrote this elsewhere, but think of "1.1" and "1.2" as two cliffs, separated by a rickety bridge (standard recovery). Once you are on one side or the other, the risk is low as long as you stay in the same development branch.

Ok, I've been reading these threads and am a little confused... should only users who have ROMs based off of (or utilizing - is that a better term?) VS's releases the ones who need to care about this update?
I am on Vegan-TAB 5.1.1 ... does this use the VS release in anyway? Or am I not affected at all, and can just keep my ROM the way it is and be on my merry way..?
Thanks!

I would recommend just using your ROM. The concern here is if you want to upgade to something else later. All the soft-brickage is happening if you flash your device to another ROM.

what are your thoughts on the locked bootloader roebeet?

What's different in the new bootloader apart from incompatibility with legacy boot images? Does it require different boot image format? Do we know how to build boot images compatible with new bootloader? If we don't - it's a dead end and we should better find a downgrade path.

[Q] Factory Reset Data?

I bought my g tablet in late November and as a newbie I managed to get it to the point that it ran flash, played angry birds and had the Google market from the great help I found on these threads. I ran out of free time to tweak it and muddle through the technical speak in the threads so now I am unsure if I can update the TnT version or if I should factory reset and follow one of the great newbie threads on this site to update since I can't remember exactly what I did to get where I am with it. Please be gentle- I know I'm a spaz and should have paid more attention to the steps I took originally.

Ok u r running the latest stock version. A new version 3991 is in testing now and may be out soon. A major change with many of the changes in roebeets enhancement pack. I would just wait a few days.
Ok- Thanks so much for your help!
brandyc,
I agree. If your time and memory are limited -- and your G-Tablet is working well -- leave well enough alone.
All the current ROMs have their unique features, but in the end there is getting to be less and less difference in the alternate ROMs and stock. It's fun to play, but not necessary!
I have two tablets -- one on TNT Lite 5.0.1 and one stock 3991. Both work great!

No, and don't expect many to ever be there. ROM Manager's faulty CWM has caused so many problems that the recommended installation method for all ROMs here (and in fact currently the ONLY method) is a manual download followed by flashing with CWM, and it will likely stay that way. gtg465x is the only dev who made the mistake of putting his ROMs up on ROM Manager and it caused no end of stress and frustration for him due to all of the people who misflashed.
I'm a long time iphoner jailbreaker. I have read and read. I have probably been on ths forum more in the last 2 months than any other member and I'll stand behind that comment. Can you post a thread that explains this in detail lol. I'm old. I had 1.53 then went to 2.03 but I couldn't make a call so I'm back stock rooted.
Right now, if you look through the dev forum:
Three Froyo ROMs - Infused v1.x, Refuse, Bionix Infinity. All three are good solid high-quality ROMs. These all have HDMI support and solid data performance on AT&T.
One complete Gingerbread ROM - Infused v2.x - As you may be able to tell, since this is based on a Canadian firmware release it has... issues in terms of data performance on AT&T. It's been tough to find a good configuration that works in all AT&T areas - things that fix the situation for some users completely break others. I'm seriously beginning to think that until AT&T releases Gingerbread we should go with the original RIL and APN combo - they didn't achieve "awesome" performance for anyone but they also didn't achieve "broken" performance for anyone.
There is also the brand new Hellraiser package, which lets you flash i9000 ROMs. There are a few known issues (the first call you make or receive after installation has no audio but it works OK after that) but it's overall working fairly well.
Is there a thread that can explain this in detail.I'm back to 1.53 but don't feel comfortable with the procedure. I just want to learn. Not trying to be a noob.

Most ROMs have installation instructions. I suggest you read most of the first posts of ROM release threads, then read up on rooting techniques (SuperOneClick is the most common), then google ClockworkMod, then google Android ADB.

[Q] Is it worth it? Suggestions?

hey guys!
So I'm new to this forum, as well as android. I know of my friend who has a Samsung csptiate, and he loves it. I however just got a Motorola xoom, and was wondering if rooting and putting a custom rom is worth it?
If so, do you guys have any suggestions for roms?
Thanks guys!
It really depends what you want to do with your Xoom and your feelings of your Xoom's performance. If you are happy with what you can do and the speed of your Xoom then I say no do not bother with rooting and custom ROM's.
If on the other hand you want to do more and want more speed doing it, yes by all means root and install a custom ROM. I highly recommend the Tiamat ROM's. It will give you more features and more control over your Xoom. They have a new ROM in the works so you may want to take your time researching your options.
The best advice I can give you is to do your research. Find the how-to guides, download all the files and read and re-read all the instructions. Make sure you fully understand what you are doing before you do it. Most problems come from people making small mistakes and not following the instructions step by step and word for word. Make sure to use the exact versions of files specified. Do not assume that a newer version of something is better or has the same features. There is a risk of bricking your Xoom whenever you flash something, but if you are carefull and follow instructions the risk is minimal and there are people in the forums who are willing and capable of helping.
Honestly, I want more speed. Do you also have to put a custom kernel?
If so, which kernel do you recommend?
You do not have to load a custom kernel to overclock, but honestly if you are gonig to go through the hassel of unlocking and rooting you might as well. Just know that as soon as you unlock your Xoom, you will have to wipe it clean. So backup your data and record what apps you have installed.
I personally have been very happy with the Tiamat kernels/ROMS. I started only installing the Tiamat kernel but quickly installed the ROM. If you install the latest ROM it includes the latest kernel as well. As I mentioned they are planning on releasing a new version soon. I usually wait a couple days after a new ROM is released to see if there are any major issues before I make the jump.
Take a look at this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209341 . This should answer a lot of your questions and point you to the guides to get you as far as you decide to go.

[Q] New to the Infinity with some Q's for the experts

Hi all,
I just picked up my Infinity off Craigslist the other day. I know, a little late but I have been lusting after one for quite a while but just couldn't justify the price tag. I finally found one in Amethyst gray 64mb model with keyboard dock and some other goodies for a price that I could afford so I picked it up. I have been reading the forum for a while so I was aware of what to look for and, although it does have a little bit of a loose screen, i really don't feel that bad about it for the price.
I am not new to Android so I have already unlocked and rooted it using the Asus unlock tool and motochopper. I read through all of the "All in one" posts and that lead me to install CROMI-X 4.6.9 although I was still a bit confused about which ROM to install. Is CROMI-X the new version or is it ClearROM Inheritance? The ROM I installed definitely seems a lot more snappy than the stock ROM and the device seems to be working very well.
If anyone could help me with some of the generic questions I have below I would greatly appreciate it.
Which ROM is the current favorite?
Is Data2SD really necessary?
If I move to Data2SD, can I do anything with the 64MB or does this essentially become not used?
Should I install a separate kernel than the one with the ROM? If so, Is this done through the TWRP utility just like a ROM?
One more thing, DEODEX'ed or ODEX? Do they run differently or is it just a developer thing?
I know that the activity around this device has wained but if there is one of you experts out there that wouldn't mind answering another Newbie's questions I would appreciate it.
Thanks again for the great forum and all the effort you all put into it.

CROMI (CleanROM Inheritance) roms were based on JB 4.1. CROMi-X (CleanROM Inheritance-Xenogenesis - don''t ask) is based on JB 4.2. The CROMI roms are no longer under development - officially retired so to speak.
1: Mine? CROMiX - nothing like it!
But that really is a matter of taste and what you crave. The CM ROMs have more customization options, the CleanROMs are designed to stay close to stock which has the advantage that they use Asus' drivers for all the hardware, which in general means: fewer conflicts and a smoother experience.
2. Most of those using Data2SD seem to report that any improvements in speed are negligible, if existent at all since about CROMiX 4.5.
If you really like to tinker and solve all kinds of problems - go ahead and try it. I have not used it myself. Seems to create more problems than it solves...
3. I think you had the choice between 3 different kernels in the Aroma installer already: _thatV3, the data2sd _that kernel and sbdags stock kernel.
If you quickly want to switch these you can just reflash the rom or: Check, I think it's post 2 or 3 of the CromiX thread. sbdags has a kernel installer which allows you to quickly change kernels without re-flashing.
Other than that Max's and Hund's kernels are popular - look for them in the Development section. And those you would flash through TWRP.
4. ODEX/DEODEX? Do you prefer vanilla or chocolate? ODEX may be just a tad stabler and faster, but that's a matter of opinion.
Hint: about 1/2 inch above the download link for CROMiX 4.6.8 is a link with an in depth discussion on exactly this question.
I can't really say that the activity around this device has "wained". sbdags keeps us pretty busy flashing! :cyclops:
I almost groan when he releases yet another incarnation. Until I flashed it - then I dance and sing. You think he can't make CROMi-X any better each time! And then he does....

1. Chromi-X (majority of TF700 users are on this rom, however it's up to you to decide among other great roms)
2. IMO it doesn't make such a great differences on the speed of the tablet, maybe a little. I have tried it and i find it a little pointless. What it does is that it gives you a higher score on Quadrant - it's an app that evaluate the score of your tablet. With or without, it doesn't make much difference on the user experience.
3. Yes, you should if you want the latest kernel. You can flash the rom without the kernel and it will not make any changes to your kernel. I suggest you try Max kernel.
4. ODEX if you're normal user like me.
Odexed CROMI-X 4.6.9 (i.e., 4.6.8 plus the 4.6.9 system patch), no data2sd (finicky and error-prone setup with marginal profits at best; I've used it for a while, and the only tangible benefit is apps installing a few seconds faster).
And welcome to the club!
PS (/EDIT): ODEXed because it installs faster (readu p on the difference here: http://www.redmondpie.com/odexed-vs-deodexed-the-difference-between-the-two-android-roms-explained/ or search for _that's Debunking Tonight feature on the forum. ). You'd only want DEODEXed if you're going to theme it yourself. If you want to theme the ODEXed version, look at pjc21's work -- it's great!
A big thanks to all. I can't believe how quickly my Q's were answered. It looks like I am in pretty good shape with the exception of using a different kernel if I would like. I am all about having a stable machine and just using it so I may be there already but I am also a tinkerer. Since I now have the ability to do Nandroid backups I am basically able to find a good setup and not worry about getting back to it. That was why I knew I needed to be unlocked. Any other input is very welcome and I am glad to be part of this group.
Thanks again

Have you checked the MD5 checksum? (I use Hashtab for checking, really convenient: http://www.implbits.com/HashTab/HashTabWindows.aspx#) The download may have been corrupted. You could disable signature checking (temporarily), but please only do that when you are absolutely sure that the file is healthy!
I haven't used MaxKernel myself, but judging from the changelog it might be best to get v4 on there -- I see optimizations in code, sio being re-added... Having said that, I'm on the new _that v3 and I love it. Overclockability is nice and all, but when it is unstable (judging from the thread and some earlier comments in the forums, I would not deem that kernel stable to my standards).

Marshmallow - puzzled

I'm new to the forum.
Used the search function on marshmallow and android 6 but nothing that made sense came up.
I joined the forum as my wife's TF101 is sluggish. Android 4.03. Kernel 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1 Build IML74K.US_epad-9.2.1.27-20120615
I came across:-
android-rom.com/upgrade-update-asus-transformer-tf101
I came here to check the 'bone fide' of this as it seems pretty advanced as most posts here are talking about Android 5.x
The site for the split ROM's wants tons of information, full addreess, DOB, email etc. which I don't give out.
So is this for real ?
If it is, is there a site where I can download the ROM without giving out info for surveys and products.
If this thread is deened to be inappropriate, please request to have it deleted and PM me the answer, although, I am sure other 'newbies' will come here looking for the same answer so it might be worth leaving so they can find the answers, official or otherwise.
Thanks for all the info and advice you are all provided. I have had a good, but short, read of quite a few threads.
Don't do it! Definitely fake.
If you are comfortable with the whole process of getting a custom ROM onto your device, go with KatKiss here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/eee-pad-transformer/development/rom-t2942560
The other option is to wait, as timduru, the expert behind KatKiss, is reportedly working on Marshmallow for our old TF101.

Spare your data and give a f*ck about that site. Go with Timdurus ROMs. The fastest was 4.4.4, I just switched to 6.0.1, from Lollipop 5.1.1 since Marshmallow is faster than the Lollipop version.
You find the latest Marshmallow ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/eee-pad-transformer/development/rom-t3318496. You should go with that one. I tested 'em all, and Timdurus ROMs are far out the best. That simple.
If you need any further help in considering, you might want to consider having a look here: http://meandmykatkiss.blogspot.de/. There will be a performance comparison on later. I haven't come to make the Bench-Screens on Marshmallow yet.
@moderation: I don't know why, but the TO 1st post seems "odd". I might at least remove the link. Anyway, if it is real:
