When you say it gets stuck, how long did you let it sit on that screen as it can take a long time to load the first time, like 5min or so

Right after it said voodoo lagfix enabled I waited a few Minutes nothing happens just shows firebird on screen.

Yeah you have to leave it for a while. Min took almost 5 min after it said lag fix enabled to finish booting up. Just let it sit there. It will boot up, just might take a little longer then your used to.

Ok Ill try again. Thanks for your help.

Left on firebird screen for 30 min never booted.

Ok that is really odd. Ok now to find the issue. Maybe a bad download? To be honest I didnt have any trouble at all with the flash, have even reflashed a few times tonight trouble shooting my own issues and trying to fix them. I would redownload it and start from a fresh stock set up.

ok will do

Ok flashed back to stock with odin. Downloaded again from different mirror. Same thing happened again. Im stuck.
Flashed back to stock again then serendipity 5.8 again which works. Im stumped.

I have installed SN successfully after flashing back to stock. I have had problems with enabling the lagfix after installing SN though. It will say lagfix enabled and then the screen goes black. I'm just running without voodoo right now.
2.05 should be out soon so maybe you can wait for that to see if that gives you any problems.

I will be putting out a Speed Mod and a FireBird kernel version. I hope this helps.

Speedmod version booted right up. Any idea why I couldn't use firebird version even though I flashed back to stock? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure that it will... I used the speed mod version for your phoenix rom and could never get the lagfix there to enable without messing up the phone. I'll give it a try though.
Luckily for me your ROMS are so good that they don't necessarily need a lagfix. Thanks for all the hard work.

firebird worked fine with supernova for me (first boot took a while)
disabled lagfix and going to flash the updated supernova with speedmod for comparison.

To be honest man I dont know. I have seen it before though as me and a buddy got our phones the same day and for some bloody reason his doesnt like the the speedmod kernel at all but works wonderfully with the FB kernel. I am on the SM version now and works great. The work DG has done on the FB kernel is outstanding dont get me wrong but I personally have a better results with SM.

I can't run andromeada either. I just can't get my head around why identical phones can't run the same kernel. It doesn't make sense to me. I appreciate your time and thank you for your help.

Glad to be reading this. I flashed cog. 3.04 then FB kernel, all worked fine, then flashed SM kernel, no problems, all worked great on phone with SM until I tried to flash back to stock cog. kernel and modem for BT use. Cwm reboot into recovery would fail when tried from inside rom manager however it would reboot into recovery using the off button or vol/power button method. So I rebooted back to FB then got the red voodoo recovery letters, long story short, brick, oden back to stock...back to cog 3.04 and FB kernel, been flashing back and forth between stock cog. and FB kernel to use bt with no issues. Didn't want to try SM again until I read up to try and figure what went wrong Maybe nothing wrong, its just the temperament of each phone as to what it likes, interesting.
How do you like SN? I like the idea of having a phone where every thing just works. Probably will flash SN with FB since this phone I have already had issues with SM, thx for your input, it's enlightening.

Used to be able to flash any ROM, now I have problems with every rom!

used to be able to flash any combo...even I-9000 roms(darky's...) with proper kernel and modem combos.
Had no problems ever!
Now, ANY combination kills my signal. Paragon; perception, pheonix, the list goes on and on.
The only ROM i can run is Cognition. If i flash to a different kernel/modem combo,(even while running cognition) I have problems.
Now atleast I am stuck with a good ROM, but I would love to fine-tune with a different kernel/radio and I have NO idea why my phone is acting this way. I am thinking maybe it's a SIM card thing(I pulled the SIM out one timebefore the phone was fully shut down...
other than that I cannot think of anything weird I have done.
In between flashes I have ODIN'd back to H2 and then Master Cleared.
Flash via CWM. Root with 1-click.
PLEASE give me some idea of what I have done?!?!!?
Or is it warranty time for the phone due to 'GPS' issues..
Thanks

Find the modem cognition uses that gives you the least problems. Are you flashing to stock before each ROM?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yep, back to stock & master cleared between(only once problems arised..back in the day I could just flash to what I wanted and never really had a problem. Went back to stock once when the new flash responded strangely.)
Looking at cognition, I get minimal information, I THINK it's stock radio/kernel..

Any one???
I would..check your usb plug/cable/port first..make sure it isn't bad and effecting your data transfer..Make sure your not plugged into a external port and plug into PC directly..
Re down load your roms and kernels again..keep them separate from what you have already used..
Flash back to stock..master clear delete all data on your internal and your data
Re-install everything over again..cause it sounds like something got corrupted along the way

Thats how I am leaning, but i dont think it's with the roms/kernels/radios i have downloaded...since I have tried so many damn copies that wouldn't make sense. also tried downloading directly to phone, eliminating the "3rd party" computer, and have used drop box in the past...
I have flashed to stock and master cleared, i could do it again, but i am tempted to go back to stock and try to exchange it for a new one due to either random shut-offs or GPS(both of which mine are effected by..) but i would like to avoid this hassle...
If something did get corrupted, any idea how I'd solve that? I am at a loss as to what could have gotten corrupted that a odin'd stock + master clear wouldn't solve...?

It's possible that your phone has a hardware issue making it more finicky. Try stock for a bit and see if the problems go away. Maybe try Andromeda 1.0 and see how the KP1 modem works (or just flash KP1 on some other ROM).

hopped back to Stock... Gonna run things here, see which problems arise, and go from there. Can you flash a different kernel onto the stock ROM? I'd assume you need a 2.1 kernel, and i don't think many are retrofitted to 2.1, but the KP1 modem is a good idea, ill let things pan out on stock and see what happens if/when i flash kp1 modem.
funny fact: fire fly made problems for me... it's based on rogers 2.2, same as cognition. that seemed odd to me.

Voodoo Lagfix and others after GB Update?

Okay ... So I am about to update to the latest pushed version. Am rolling back to EE4 now and have the update.zip on my card. What about CWM? Does my current version I've been using with my Gummy Charged 2.1 work with it? I have the Imosyn (sp) kernel on my card that I will apply after the update to 2.3.6 for root, as I understand it.
Are there any Gummy's or anything that are going to work after the 'official' update?
You don't use CWM with the update. You use stock recovery.
Gummy is EP1W. If you install it over the OTA, you'll bring yourself right back down to EP1, and the update will be pointless. You can get lagfix by running imoseyon kernel. It's EP4. It's slightly older EP4, but I haven't had any issues.

Thank you sir! Phone is updating now. I will apply the imoseyon kernel after it's done. Lagfix is the main thing anyhow, I can nuke the bloatness with my Titanium.
now I'm confused .... I no longer have CWM recovery. How am I to apply the imoseyon kernel via stock recovery? Can I just rename it as update.zip?
By taking it back to stock EE4 and installing the update, one of the things it did was restore the default recovery environment.
Go back into ODIN and install CWM, don't use Auto-Reboot. When it's done flashing, turn the phone off and hold the button combinations to start the phone into CWM. Flash iMoseyOn's kernel and you're done at that point.

Yeah I sure have. The kernel I used is imoseyon_kernel_charge_gb_4.0.0 ... not rooted .... guess I need to drop five yards and punt (do it all over)
Edit: The one thing I did not do prior to rolling back to EE4 was to do the big 3 wipe of data/cache/etc ..... maybe that's the problem?

Try installing Superuser from the Market? imosyeon kernel should have installed binary and apk, but maybe it missed part of it. If all else fails, flash the superuser zip from CWM.

Yes, I had installed SU from the market and didn't have root. I had an SU zip saved on my desktop .... su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed .... I put that on the sd and installed it and I am rooted !!
Thanx Again
I love Lagfix and Voodoo Sound, but I'm currently running the stock kernel. I read in other forum discussion that Samsung designs their kernels to work with their OS revisions. People have said they're getting the best performance with the stock kernel.
Until IMoseyOn releases a new kernel based on the EP4D source that was released, I'm going to stick with stock.
Just some food for thought.

My concern was updating to 2.3.6 and having root. (on the road all day and need wireless tethering so outlook is open on laptop) Using the tad older imoseyon kernel gave me that, plus lagfix, which I have liked since this phone hit the market. I'm good for now, I can always update when the latest and greatest comes out.

I have root on the stock kernel bro. Did a clean EE4 install, skipped as much set up as possible, ran update.zip in stock recovery, ODIN flashed imnuts' latest CWM recovery with auto-reboot disabled, booted directly into CWM recovery, flashed the latest SU zip, then ran setup as normal. Boom! Root.
Completely clean install, latest OS and kernel, root, plus tether works and everything.
Right now I'm just waiting on imnuts' TW4 theme to launch (he's estimating Sunday). Hopefully I can install that theme over a debloated and deodexed version of the latest OTA. It won't be long before IMoseyOn releases a kernel built from source that enables Lagfix. That's really all I'm missing, since Voodoo Control lets me load most of Voodoo Sound on top of the stock kernel.
What I'm REALLY looking forward to is an release of Liberty for the Charge or something AOSP if we ever get the 4G RIL sorted out... This things will take considerable time though.
It just doesn't matter ... In all honesty I liked the feel of the Gummy GBE 2.1 better than this stock ginger ... but again, it just doesn't matter to me. Functionality is all I care about, it's only a damn phone !!!
I loaded up the debloated/deodexed/rooted all-in one package danalo posted in development, flashed perfectly and after a wipe in CWM on first boot seems to be running fine except for the poop

Care to make a thread of what you done? Files used? I want to re-root my Charge, but want to keep the latest ota update and radios. Main question is the "update.zip" file?
iMoseyOn has stated that he's not going to be developing kernels anymore due to him having to turn in all of his phones to his old employer. He's taken up a new job and because of that he has to return his phones, including the Droid Charge.

Yeah, I read last night. Awful news. I hope someone can just get us full Voodoo and EXT4 support. I don't absolutely need OC/UV, but it'd be nice...
In other bad news, imnuts is getting a Galaxy Nexus and only pledging support for the Charge for "a few more months."
Let's hope JT and the gang can get this RIL figured out, so we can at least have Team Douche to continue development with CM 7.2 and CM 9...

Damn. And I thought it couldn't get any worse with iMoseyOn leaving. And now we have imnuts leaving too? It just went from bad to worse in a matter of 48 hours!
Guess I better get used to just using the stock kernel.

Looking for a stable rom

so my sgs4g was rooted and got on gb with the gb starter pack thread, after which i jumped around between a few roms and am currently running octaneGB.
however, it has always had stability problems, and i can't figure out why. possibly because i messed up bootloaders? i'm pretty sure it can't be the fault of the roms i flashed.
from here, all I want is a stable phone.
can i wipe the phone as it is and then use the oneclick heimdall SMS kj6? would this put me on rooted GB with CWM and good bootloaders? could i simply cwm flash a rom like valhalla after that?
any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Yes, you can use the one-click to put KJ6 on there then flash a different ROM via CWM.
Personally I've had the best experience with Valhalla ROMs. Last night I just flashed RAVERX3X latest Valhalla Black build. Its low profile so it's quick and responsive, and even better, not a single instability issue.

thanks for the advice guys!
I did the first flash step, which worked successfully and rebooted my phone. then i tried to flash the bootloaders that came with it, but uploading PIT 1/10 failed, and it froze trying to end session. i pulled the battery and the phone seemed bricked, but i connected the cable and oneclick said it was connected (no download mode screen, no lights at all). so i did the initial one-click flash and let it reboot again, then flashed valhalla black.
nothing SEEMS to be wrong, but i'm a little scared. can anyone weigh in on what happened?
You're ok. I can't explain what happened but people have reported similar issues, nothing on the screen but it can be seen in ODIN, and were able to recover (as you did) just fine.

This section of XDA is small, but good in terms of quality.
I just flashed Raver's Cyanogenmod/Valhalla hybrid and it is smooth and stable.
One-Click...
At the beginning of the week, I still had Froyo on my device.
I used Bryan's one-click (SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar)...
(I had a scare, too... which involved the so-called "Rainbow screen" -- but FB suggested I run the one-click, again and also to do the Bootloaders -- and everything turned out ok).
But, I needed to get CWM 5 (and, that particular one-click had CWM 3.0.2.8x)
So, I flashed an update of Bryan's kernel (sms-T959V-KJ6-v0.1.1-rc1-unsigned-update.zip)
And, because I was feeling overjoyed at all the goodness that I'd seen so far, I flashed RaverX3X's rc3.zip (from Team Acid's Source Forge site)...
And, life is really, really, really... good.
yep
+1 Valhalla black edition! Installed today and love love love.
ok... my phone is now crashing and rebooting all over the place after flashing valhalla black. it seemed fine for the first hour. should i try the one-click again? or did i not wait 10 minutes after flashing the rom, maybe?
anyone know what could be the problem?
thanks in advance!

Not sure about the crashing but I experienced reboots because of the kernel Valhalla Black uses. There are fixes out there for that part of the problem but what you should really is perform a factory data reset, do the one to get a ROM with CWM on it, then use CWM to install Valhalla Black per the instructions on the page for it. I've a feeling you'll be much more stable after that.
As for the 10 minutes, that's basically to allow your phone to rebuild the Davlik cache (cache with optimizations for your apps). Definitely let it sit while it does that just to be safe.
thanks yet again. will try this asap!
can i assume that my bootloaders are correct after the weird issues from the last page? you mentioned that it happened to several people, but it still bothers me that technically it never got past 1/10 uploading PIT file :x
also, regarding the problems with the kernel, can anyone point me to a kernel that works with valhalla final and is known to be fully stable? i want to try to do everything to get the phone usable.

If it was fully booting and you weren't getting the "rainbow" screen, then your boot loaders are fine. If in doubt, go check out bhundven's one-clicks, and run one of them - twice. The first time it doesn't let you check the boot loader box but the 2nd time it does.
Valhalla Final comes with bundven's beta 2c kernel. I believe people are running that without issue. Keep in mind Valhalla Final and Valhalla Black are two different ROMs with two different kernels.
I did a one-click back to stock (factory reset, cache wipes, etc.) & am running bhundven's latest beta kernel with no problems (thus far).

Help! boot loop

ok so i rooted a few weeks ago and downloaded the usual apps. super user titanium back up and clock work mod. tried to flash a rom with clock work mod and got the e:signature verification failure message. found a post for a kernal that made clock work mod actually work so i tried to flash a rom. zSimplyAOKPV5_Dark to be exact. now it sticks on boot screen. i have searched for hours and cannot find a way to fix my problem. its my first rooted android and first attempted rom flash and i botched it right off the rip. please help?
Depending on what you did beforehand, you have some options.
If you have backed everything up previously, just flash back to stock with one of the one-click stock roms in the Development section (they're in a sticky).
If you haven't backed everything up, try holding V+/V-/power until it reboots. If it doesn't take you to recovery, you can try to flash a kernel (most likely one that would match the version of android/rom you were running prior to this flash) and see if it lets you into recovery. You'll have to flash it with either Odin or Heimdall, after rebooting into download mode (power off, hold V+/V-, insert USB).
If that doesn't work, though, the stock flashing would probably be your best and/or only bet.
it wont allow me into recovery though i can get to download mode by pulling the battery and pressing just the volume +- and plugging in the usb. i was trying to flash an ics slim rom. thanks for your very speedy response.
i have now tried to flash a stock rom however it is not working from there even with the stock kernal. now it is hanging on the at&t screen.
ok i got it. seems the kernal i flashed to help cwd work properly was the culprit. now i dont know how im going to flash this ics rom im looking at without it.

Flash corn kernel if you have stock gingerbread
Sent from my SGH-I897
The utility in my signature can help you flash the Corn Kernel so that you will have CWM.
I have corn kernal and odin 3 on the computer at home. Ill do that tonight. Any suggestions on a good stable rom for a noob? Preferably ics. I hated posting for fear of being flamed as a noob. My wife keeps making fun of me for it so I kinda have to get it done. I want to fix hers also. Its a great little phone it just seem a bit buggy to me. Very laggy. Thanks for all the help.

Maybe start with a KK4 based rom such as Legend and then move up to ICS after that. I only say that because there is a bug in ICS that could render your internal SD unusable. It's rare, but when it happens you will not be happy.
Still unable to get corn kernal to flash. I've tried a few of your guys fixes but I'm gonna have to get some other updates to my computer first.

Firmware question after bad flash

So I had a completely stock Galaxy s 4g, on gingerbread. I had the bright idea of rooting to try out different builds. I was in the middle of flashing when I noticed that what I was flashing was for the Vibrant. Well, it was either let it flash with that or stop the flash, so I stopped it. After searching for hours, I couldn't find a working link for a download to flash a custom build. I was able to find a "stock" flash, but for some reason I don't think it's right. I have problems with low call volume now and have to power the phone off and on to fix it temporarily. Everything else works fine, so far. Another thing I noticed is everyone shows firmware of 2.3.6, mine says 2.3.4????? Here's my info: sigh-t959v, baseband T959VUVKG4, kernel 2.6.35.7-t959vuvkg4-cl385158, build gingerbread.vuvkg4.
Any thoughts on what I should do?
Thanks in advance
This thread has heimdall one clicks that will get you back to stock kj6. Remember to flash once then after booting until you hear the t-mo jingle pull battery and put it back in download mode and check the flash bootloaders and flash it again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
If you want root in the second post is a one click created by me. You can flash it instead of the plain stock one by bhundeven. But you need to flash the bootloaders to make sure you get rid of all the vibrant stuff.
Ok, thanks a lot. I will flash your build tomorrow when I get home from work. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
So I flashed your build and everythingis working great, even seems to be running faster. However, the wifi says "error" when I try and activate it. Is that a rom problem? Should I start over and try again?
It is because the kernel uses a different module then what is in the rom itself. That is why it is suppose to be used as a stepping stone to flash to a different rom.
Gotcha.
