Docks recognition?! - Galaxy S I9000 Accessories

Hi,
I have been trying to find how the sgs recognizes the different docks. Is it something generic for android or phone specific?
Thanks for any help.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

It is a resistor placed on pins 4+5 of the microUSB. Do a search here the full details are available.

I already suspected something like that but i have tried to search and i came out empty, perhaps I'm not using the correct keywords.
And can you confirm that the resistor values are android generic or phone specific?
Thanks

It's not at the resistors only.
I installed a third party USB charger as mounting socket in my car, so that you can charge any USB device by using the USB cable only.
While using the original Samsung USB cable the i9000 switches immediately to the car dock application. So it seems that the Samsung recognizes that kind of electricity as "car owned". Don't why or if - but it works like that.

As so many handsets are using the same way to trigger the dock it may be that your car charger is already pre wired with the resistor..

Interesting. Never given a thought that such cheap socket has more inside than 2 power cables. Mh ... analyzing the charger inside means dismantling the cars interior again - not in that mood.
So, the opener should think about resistors only.

Thanks for all the help.
Now i believe to be in the right way.

Where do you get your cables?

I would like to buy a reliable charger that I CAN root with...any recommendations...there are mixed reviews on certain cables on amazon so I figured I would ask here...a 700 ma car charger would be useful too

Yep, bought the same ones. Gold plated and work perfectly. I got one 3 footer for the car and 2 six footers for inside. I didn't realize how long 6 ft is when it comes to cables, they are pretty damn long. They are EXTREMELY nice cables and work flawlessly.

Micro usb. Just about any charger will work too as long as it has enough amps. (It'll still work with a low amp charger, but charge slower.)
Monoprice for all my cables. Never let me down and always the best price.

atix 2 doesn't work with my car charger?

ok, i've tested a nokia cable and the stock cable, but the phone will not charge in my car with either. did motorola really have the idea of forcing atrix owners to purchase the car dock to charge on the go?
this is a large problem for me since my sport has me traveling a lot. i consume a lot of battery running gps and music in my car. this is not good.
Weird I use a FM converter one my phone to play music over the radio and it has a USB port I plug into and charge my phone at the same time. Might try another charger?

Nope. I use a generic cig lighter charger w/usb port and a generic cord from a local cell phone shop and it works on my phone perfectly. However, all are not created equal. I was going to give my generic charger to my gf cause I bought a fancy red one (same type, but with a red rubberized coating on it) but it wouldnt work on my phone, had no issue working on my ipod touch though. So yeah, some may not work, not quite sure why.

Dock pins? anyone know the pinout?

Just wondering if anyone knows the pinout for the 5 contacts on the back so i could make myself a speaker/charger dock until an official one becomes more available.
I've wondered this myself. After running a meter across the pins. Pins 2&4 seem to accept a voltage pin 5 is a ground I think. I feel through a guesstament that it follows the USB pinout in flat lateral form.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Usually I would literally just test each pin to see what was what but obviously being an expensive phone and canceling my insirance I do not want to short anything out, and yes it seems logical for one of the end contacts to be a ground, did you put a voltage into pin 2 & 4? If so how much?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA App
I've been getting read to cut an older USB cable and test that way. But I used 4.4 volts. I to don't want to kill the warranty by ripping the phone apart. After I cut the USB I'm going to make a jig and do tests. If I find anything out I'll post here.

It's the micro USB pinout in pogo form..
1. 5vcc
2. Data -
3. Data +
4. Audio out mono
5. Ground.
Left to right pinout with the camera facing your left shoulder.

Thank you, I shall post a pic of homemade dock when I have the time to make one.

Ok. I tested. Connected HTC ONE X to lab power supply (5V 1A limit) and after a while (2-3 seconds) is started charging and 0.44A was flowing into phone. It was almost fully charged at the time.
Does anybody know how to get audio out on audio out pin?
And why Data - pin has 1,8V in reference to ground at all times?
edit:
Ok. I measured again. 0.44A and phone goes to charging (USB). I don't have time today to see what happens if you connect Data + adn - pins...
But still no luck with audio.

Switch between USB and ac charge

I am installing a tab 2 7 as a permanent fixture to my car dashboard. I would like to charge the tablet in ac mode when the ignition is on and, trickle (USB) charge while the ignition is off.
As well as saving my car battery, this will also be my trigger for tasker to activate / deactivate the display.
My question is this, if I use a relay to short the two data pins on the USB cable will this switch to ac charge mode.
An alternative may be to use a standard Car charger and use a relay to break the continuity in the middle cores when the ignition is off

I'm going to be attempting the same thing with a Droid X I'm using as a DVR in my car. Any updates? According to this, once AC charging is initiated, removing the short will not revert the charging mode back to the lower rate without interrupting the connection.

I'm still waiting on the boat from China for my parts, but had an idea in the meantime. Perhaps a second relay to simply interrupt the +5V wire (and a capacitor to add even more of a delay?) would do the trick. I'm no EE, but it seems like this may do the trick.

My new plan is to switch in a resistor to trick the Tablet into thinking it's docked. Then use this to trigger events in tasker

@KrisPerry - Can you elaborate more on how to accomplish this with the Galaxy Tab 2? I have seen threads on how to do this for the S2/S3 with the micro USB connector, but nothing for the the Galaxy Tab 2. I would be very interested if this works for you.
Cheers!

Ok first I ordered the breakout board from http://www.podgizmo.com. this allows components to be soldered directly to the relevant pins.
I simply used a 33 and a 10ohm resistor to give approx 7.5 ohm resistance. When the ignition is started a relay switches the resistance across the deviceID pin. The Tablet then thinks it has been car docked and subsequently runs a specific tasker profile

@KrisPerry - Brilliant, this is exactly what I have been looking for. Do you already have this working? Just to confirm, is the deviceID pin you reference pin 13 (ACCESSORY_ID)?
I'd love to learn more about your setup if you have it documented somewhere (I didn't find anything on XDA).
Cheers!

Yes, it attaches through the micro USB. My understanding is, that there is a resistor on the 'Sense' wire of the usb that triggers dock mode, and enables audio to travel over the Data + and - wires.
At least, that's how the dock worked for the older Galaxy S models.
The iBOLT Dock'n Play cable...
All, the cable you're discussing is available from us at iBOLT on Amazon here, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PN6APM When the microUSB is inserted it triggers "DockMode" in any Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 or Note I & II. You can go into "Accessory-Settings" and select "audio out" and "dock mode screen". This means the sound from all Apps (not phone calls though) will go to the 3.5 mm aux-out jack so there's only ONE cable needed for charging AND playing music to a car-stereo or home surround sound system (if they feature a 3.5 mm female connector). Also, with the DockMode apps like iBOLT Dock'n Drive, CarHome Ultra, Ulysee Speedometer, can be set as default "home screen" apps. You can also set TuneIn and Slacker Radio as "home screen". Summary: No need for a separate aux-out cable when using the Dock'n Play cable... Great accessory for home or in the car. I'll stay tuned to the conversation if anyone has follow up questions.
So what's so special at iBOLT cable? why I can't use the same cable like attached in the picture in the first thread..
how come no one make cheaper cable thats do the same thing?
thanks.

as I far as I know, it's because firmware update, there's no any mod/patch that can override it, and let us use this cable?
iBOLT cable working on S4, but it cost 20$, which is alot for simple cable.. so if their cable works, I don't see any reason why the other cables wont work.
