NEW 2011 HTC DESIRE S (pros&cons) - HTC Desire S

so...HTC presented new version of desire .. and i'm dissapointed
it looks nice. i love same 3.7" display (not too small, not too big)
BUT!!!
no dual-core??? they better loose second camera and put some processing power in!
so what do you think??

http://en.akihabaranews.com/84688/phones/mwc-2011-htc-desire-s-where-is-my-dual-core-cpu
Here is the link.
To be honest I have got used to the trackpad now and would miss it. Also its nice having the actual button. Not sure if the capacitive buttons are as good.
I think the original desire is the best. It's so reliable and just the right size. If HTC had included 1gb of storage in the first place it would be spot on.
I hope we can port the proposed 2.4 rom over.

Last year they were the best, now they are becoming second Nokia - boring.
I don't know what to buy.. LG Optimus 2x looks nice, but its LG. Motorola Atrix is nice, but bootloader is locked. Samsung Galaxy S2 is stunning, but probably too big for a pocket. Still Galaxy S2 is my favorite, but I have to see it in person.

I have to admit, the new productline is a fail.

Just saw the article on TC. I also thought about a dual-core, would have changed my Desire for that, but now...hmm dont think so, I am ok with the current Desire.

What's the point of having a dual core when the OS doesn't support it? By the time android supports dual core, HTC will release a dual core phone. No doubt about that.

first desire was best of their lineup last year ..it should be the same this year too. now it's just a facelift for an old one

better have phone and wait for OS than having OS and no phone thats the point i think

SGS II beats off this phone in every point and it will have Dual-Core and SAMOLED. For me the screen of the SGS II is just too big. Same specs SAMOLED in Desire-package would be perfect for me.

same there's no problem with my original Desire apart from internal memory...

Even the Incredible S isn't as good as the DHD - 1.1GB internal storage vs 1.5GB in the DHD?
I can't see the appeal personally

That's not the right way, since many people wanting a dual core phone now, are early adopters. If the Desire S would have dual core, then you still need to wait until, let's say at least 6 months before they can use it. 6 months is a really loooong time in tech terms. When Android finally officially supports dual core, HTC would relase another nw device with even better specs. So the eary adopters who bought the dual core before anyone else, would want to buy the new device AGAIN, so they wasted a lot of money with the first dual core device without having to benifit from the dual core.

and if you buy DESIRE S now and in 6months they make another DESIRE with dual core, what then?? isn't that same story? you will need to by the new one with dual core and throw away DESIRE S wich will be really useless at that point
i think they just wanted to present something on WMC'11 and with nothing better they pimped out wildfire and named it DESIRE S

shame on you HTC .... i have been a loyal fan and just wanted and hoped for a duel core... weather we need it or not!
if your rivals are making them then you need to!

And it was never intended to be. So where is problem? Desire S is "just" evolution of original Desire. If you want competitor for Galaxy S II then wait for Desire HD2.

HTC Desire S vs. LG Optimus 2X

Hi all, please help me decide if i should get the this or the lg 2x... Is this phone still good and powerful enough or should i be looking to the dual cores? This phone isnt a high end device anymore, so htc arent supporting it with updates (sense 3.0) that has really dissapoimted me as i was looking forward to the update and the hardware is capable of using it. Its just htcs scam to squeeze morr profits,,
Help please?
So is it worth it? Or should i get the lg2x... I heard it has some bugs though..

i doubt the hardware of the DS is enough for sense 3.0 because on one of the videos that i saw of sense 3.0 the dual core seemed to lagg a bit (or it could be sense is still under development & needs works)
i saw a few threads about random reboot on lg 2x
but if you want a dual core why not consider htc sensation or evo 3d?

Thanks for the speedy reply! There is some controversy over sense 3.0 requirements. Over at the dhd forums, they have a port of sense 3.0! It is apparently working smooth! So htc could have been lying! Of course i would want official updates rather than a custom ROM, therefore i hope htc will release sense 3.0.
I hope lg fix the random reboot problem. The lg has been known to have mAny bugs!
I cannot consider the evo, because 1) i live in uk
2) i dislike 3d screens!
The sensation looks good, but i cAnt afford it, therfore i wad looking for a cheap dual core altenative - lg 2x.
Ideally if i could have a dualcore, id like the sgs 2! Thanks for opinions, but would you recommend this phone?

i dont have the phone yet so i cant comment much about it...
but i think im still getting this phone because
1.i hate LG
2.i love htc sense (a custom rom is good enough actually its better for me)
3.LG service is VERY bad in my area (it gives me headaches)
4.i really dont need a dual core now as i am not going to play a lot of games & dont mind a little lag in videos
i am considering samsung galaxy s2 but wont be getting it if the price is a bit high...(cant push my budget beyond 550 USD)
i also found a post on lg otimus 2x forum saying that it gets stuck during playback (this probably will get fixed as it is a software issue)

Thanks! I have just been reading some threads here, and i may have changed my mind! The ds is quite good! There will be no real need of dual cores as many phones wont be supported yet with dual core. And the ds is cheap at o2 now (i suspect it will be even cheaper by summer!)
You say you like htc sense... But are you bothered about not getting the sense 3.0 update?

it is just that i dont consider the difference between sense 2.1 & sense 3.0 a dealbreaker (atleast for now from the engadget preview of sense 3.0)

Yeh, i guess i hav to consider that! I just saw some comparison vids with the 2x and dhd (same specs at ds) and the dual core isnt really that benificial. It beats the dhd by 1-2 secs in web pages, not much at all!! I exoected much more! If thats the case, i'll settle for the ds!

Actually realy considering thd phone now!! Watch all the phonearena vids, they are awesome and make you wamt the phone more!
Only concern is the small screen, coming from a 4.1 screen... And imo, the design isntas nice as the hd2 industrial square shape design!!

thanks, but that is not the case! if you watch some vids speed test of tegra 2 vs snapdragon, the spees are both the same! the 2x occsionally beats the dhd (snapdragon) by only 1-2 secs, not alot faster!
Regarding the Sense 3.0 which says won't be porting to the old devices our at least to the newly released. Theres an article on techradar that HTC Taiwan had twitted that some elements of Sense 3.0 maybe ported to their old devices. We just have to wait and see.
@TS
If you feel that the LG 2X really do meet your requirement, then by all means get the 2X. Thinking that it will be getting a Gingerbread update soon and might fix all bugs and may improve performance.
But as for me...very satisfied with Desire S

that is because loading webpages is more dependent on connection speed than processing power
where the real difference comes in is during gaming & watching videos
so if these two are important you should get a dualcore phone
from the community at lg2x i think they will fix the video playback issue in their custom roms (if lg doesn't fix them sooner)

another benefit of dual core is multi tasking is easier

Newbie, Thinking of buying a Desire S

Hi, Im thinking of getting a Desire S as my next phone. Im not exactly new to this as i had a regular Desire for about 18 months which i rooted, s-off and installed many customs roms.
I was looking for a upgrade and bought a Sensation a few weeks ago but its not for me as i find the phone abit too big. Even though its really fast, I dont find it comfortable to use.
The only phones that i can see that are similar size to the original desire is LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix or Desire S. But as I want Sense, the Desire S is only the option. Even though it is not dual core, it should be much quicker than a Desire as;
- Has 50% more RAM. 768MB compared to 512- 1GB internal memory so no need for A2SD which should make things faster- Processor, even though its a 1GHZ i believe it can be overclocked to over 1.8GHZ and at a safe 1.4GHZ. Is this correct?
In terms of ROMS, the Desire S has got a large collection.
Anything else that i have missed out or need to know?
Thanks
Hi, please tell me where did you find it ?
This configuration is awesome.
From what you've written there, you already know the answer as to which phone you should be getting. If you are lookin for something th same size as the Desire S then there is no real competition as faras I'm concerned - not just for design and specifications, but also for ROMs, development and user forum support on XDA
As the Nike adverts say "Just Do It!!"
Thanks guys, am I correct regarding the overclock statement I've made?
Hi.
If You are not bothered with not having the latest tech, then I would say Desire S is a good choice.
So far android experience is great on it, haven't found any real reason to go with multi core just yet.
Things You'll like - alloy unibody, size, battery life (depending on rom and useage), overall speed, quite decent main camera + front cam (skype works very well), price (I wouldn't sign for a long contract on it though).
Cons - well... battery life (still, ain't bad but more energy efficient devices are going to be in sale soon)
Good luck.
You are correct with all statements
The Desire S also has better battery life than the original, thanks to its larger capacity, and the more optimized 2nd gen CPU (which is very good for OC'ing)
I have my ds for 6 months now, and im very happy with iti had the same problem like you (the sensation was to big)
I had the choice between samsung galaxy s and desire s, and i have choosen the ds because of sense too
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire S mit Tapatalk
Decision made, desire s it is. Just need to put my sensation on eBay now.
Also noticed that sensation xl has the same CPU as the desire s which is clocked to 1.5ghz.
I think there is a thread on here somewhere about the CPU being the same as the one in the Sensation, and i think that though it is the same model number the one in the Sensation it is a later generation model so it is designed differantly and runs at a higher speed.
The only other thing i would say is perhaps wait a month or so and see what new models HTC announce. it could be that the Desire S gets upgraded similar to the move from Desire to Desire S.
Edit heres link to the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459911
There is a HTC primo coming out in a few months but that only has 512mb RAM.

Yup, you missed something huge. THE MWC IS COMING IN LESS THAN A MONTH !!!!!! The Desire S was revealed at MWC last year. Surely, something waaaaaay better will show up this year. I LOVE my desire s, but i won't reccomend you to buy it at this time.
The Galaxy S Advance has been announced, it's roughly the same size as the Desire S (4.0 inch screen), similar price but has much better hardware (Dual core 1 Ghz CPU, Super Amoled Screen). HTC must compete with this, so somthing big (with sense ) will come at MWC. TRUST ME. Even if you don't like what comes, you can buy the Desire S later, it's not like HTC is gonna stop supplies

Sadly, as much as I love my Desire S too, I can only agree with Shrome.
Unless you aren't too bothered about having the latest and greatest, and aren't a tech-head, this phone is recommended and will serve you well for basic smartphone tasks.

I'm sure the Desire S will serve for a lot more than just basic tasks. I know synthetic benchmarks are not a lot to go by, but considering the stock Galaxy Nexus gets 32 fps in Nenamark 2 and my Desire S gets 27 fps (without any overclock), it's somewhat reassuring and makes me believe the Desire S still has a bit of kick remaining.

Also, i presume the phone will be launched towards summer time and have a price of £300? Whereas the Desire S is available on ebay now for roughly half that price.

Although the leaked specs say 512mb, I highly doubt the device would come like that.
HTC wouldn't downgrade the succesor.
Leaked specs aren't always true you know
The HD2 original leak said it has 384mb RAM. But it ended up having 448mb (576mb actually, if you unlock the hidden RAM)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
You can't be sure of any of those things( except the price, maybe). The leaks are HIGHLY unreliable. I'm 99% sure it won't have lower RAM than the Desire S if it's a successor. For all you know, it may be a succesor to Wildfire S, cost waaaay less, and the Desire S may have a different succesor entirely
Hmmm, not sure now.
When will the official release be of these phones? And when they become available, are we talking weeks/months?

325i Please see my response to your other thread about coming from the old Desire. I just edited it. Noticed a worrying trend on the recent Amazon reviews.
Regarding new phones releases, it depends. If the manufacturers have any sense, they'll have the product ready to swing into the shops riding on the hype-wave from MWC. Others may want to hang back and see how their product is received before committing to getting x amount of them made.
For the first time I'm not 100% about sticking with HTC for my next phone. I just don't trust their reliability and after sales support so much any more. I buy my phones outright SIM-free and unlocked so I can't really afford to make a bad decision.
Problem is looking around at alternatives I don't yet see anything tempting, baring in mind I don't like whopping screens and not too fussed about multi-core devices. I mean if the Xperia Arc S was slightly smaller and had a front-facing camera I'd probably already be saving up for it.
The Sony (minus the Ericsson) Xperia S is just far far far too big. OK 12MP camera but I bet it still blurs if taking a moving shot. Plus is it me, or have the designers copped out? A formless, plain rectangle of a phone like SGS2. Doesn't look comfortable at all to hold, and doesn't hold a candle to the Desire S in terms of looks.
Only thing I'm certain of is I wont be selling my DS. I'll keep it around so I can stay in this section of XDA and carry on with testing and support.
yeah the desire s overclocks very well indeed.mine will run at 1.5ghz stable. its definatly a much more capable phone than the original desire and as you say there arnt many other phones that match the form you are looking for.
we also have the best section on xda with a huge selection of roms.cant go wrong really.BUY ONE!
Think ill go for the Desire S.
I also buy my phones sim free, usually slightly used ones off ebay. Ive decided to get a Desire S, if i newer/better HTC comes out, i can always put the Desire S back on ebay.

Well, HTC got the Endeavor but we don't know yet when it's going to be released. But why would you wait for Tegra 3? The dual cores we have now are fast enough to run every game in the Market smoothly. Just don't go for a Blackberry. Those things are waaaay slower than any modern Android smartphone and there's less things you can do with them.

Sure, they can't do as much, but saying they're slower is biased. The 9900, the one he mentioned, is as fast as any high end android and faster than many others. Blackberries are for people looking for a specific set of features, let's not be mindless bigots.
i'd wait. nexus' are still expensive, and with the new phones coming out soon, it will drop in price significantly. it'll always be a catch-up game, like with anything else that is mass produced. there will always be better things in a few months. ultimately, it's up to you what you spend your money on.
To be fair, Blackberry is for business folks that are lost in a world of technology.
There will be a number of quadcore phones (by HTC, LG, Samsung, probably some others - of course all with custom overlays instead of pure ICS), announced at MWC in two weeks. And it will take some more time (in some cases even months I suppose) until you can buy them.
The next Nexus with a quadcore chip is almost a year away. So you must decide if you want a Galaxy Nexus (pure Android, fast updates, nice screen, NFC - but a mediocre camera and no SD card slot) or wait for phones like the Galaxy S3 with better hardware and an overlay.
But in terms of Sense, TouchWiz etc: If there is a phone with lovely hardware but an annoying skin, there's always the option to install CM9 e.g.
Wait for the HTC Endeavor (or Ville) !
id say go for the nexus, if some say dual core is an overkill, quad core is an over over overkill, concerned bout the battery

I might be wrong but shouldn't battery life actually be better with the Tegra 3? This is because of that 5th core that's used for less demanding tasks and the others 'come alive' when needed.
Sensation xl..
Just read that the Galaxy Nexus 32GB version may well not arrive. 16GB of memory fills up pretty quick with a few Gameloft games, some music, a couple of ROM's, some backups and data from other apps so do consider this when buying it.
If I were you I'd wait for some of the new devices.
Nexus baby.. You can always blow some more money later...

today i bought galaxy nexus and i must say its not recomended device for sensation users... my display qualiti was really poor... white was yellow with arrows... and black had dark point on display... for example clock app... camera qualiti was really good... performance on stock nexus rom not so good... so im going to take back money tomorrow... i think my sensation is better than nexus... and for 500euro can have better device than nexus...

Damn that's nice! +1 to HTC...might hold on buying a Sensation now...
But AT&T is getting the far superior One X. This is the final straw for me. Once again, T-Mobile gets the second class device, while another carrier gets the top end device. No more. I'm sick of second class equipment.
Ironically, I recently switched home cable providers for the same reason. Wow Cable had old ancient cable boxes which were laggy and had no features. The service is no better on Comcast, but the equipment is MUCH better. How companies like Wow and T-Mobile stay in business, I have no idea.
Why can't all of the providers get the same phones!!! Then they can evenly compete on service!

Hold on there my friend: Read this:

The At&t One X and T-mobile One S is more a like then you think. The main difference is the One S has a slightly smaller screen and is qHD Super AMOLED vs 720hp super lcd2 for the One X. They both have the next gen S4 which is faster the the 4+1 quad core Tegra 3.

True. But I'm sure most of us would rather have the 4.7 inch 720p screen that the OX has. After playing with my gf's GN often, I don't want anything less than 4.5 inches and 720p display.
Superior or not, I can't wait for this phone to drop.
Plus with the One V having very similar specs to the mytouch 4g this should give us hope of very good ports of ics and sense 4.0!

Yeah, I read that later. It does help because it makes the only appreciable difference the screen. Still though, and like mackster said, I really want the current standard 720p resolution. Not something that came out a year ago! There's always something that keeps T-Mobile a second class carrier.
Yeah, i saw this and i was SOO excited, if the specs are similar, the MT4G will live on foreva!
Edit: Ok guys, i have seen the specs and have compared them...
Here is how the phones stack up: SAME display resolution, ONE V: 512 Ram...MT4G: 768 Ram , Both have single core snapdragon processors. This is definitely a good sign. Our phone is better than the one that has been released (on paper at least) and it should be fairly easy to port the roms given screen resolution. I think HTC just saved our asses. YAY!!!

Only thing is that the camera still won't work since they're way different aren't they? :-\

Yes thats what I saw! This actually better then the whole sense 3.0 and 3.5 situation because of no re-sizing issue! and actually save for the camera we have the better specs! Yes HTC Did make it easier! The mytouch 4g was ahead of its time when it launched!

It may be a slim chance the mt4g may get updated then we can use its cam or kernel, but the dhd or incredible 2 should get the official update and there similar cams to ours.
WAIT! We might be saved thanks to HTC AGAIN! Check this out!

Dragon series! Single Core, 4 inch screen phones all rocking ICS and sense 4.0!! Oh and five Mega pixel cams! Which hopefully means they're the same as the one we have! If so, we might be in luck for a camera fix. Only problem is that these are Chinese only handsets :-\ nonetheless, this brings hope.

Wow that even better! That's closer to our cam. Its not using the new HTC ImageChip! Chinese stuff always get leaked , lol
I swear the MT4G is the T-Mobile-branded redheaded stepchild with nine lives. If I was still able to use mine, I'd be excited because it's starting to look like the "never say die" successor to the HD2.

[Q] HTC One V or Sony Xperia U - Which one to choose?

I am planning to buy a new phone by next month I have a budget of around INR 17000 / $320 to buy one.
I did a lot of research and found two phones that are good and will fit my budget too.
HTC One V and Sony Xperia U
Xperia U is better in most aspects like it has dual core processor, better display etc. but it does not have a memory card slot on the other hand
One V has better camera and also has memory card slot but Single Core processor.
I am stuck which 1 to go for. Need help choosing 1.
Also I am open to any other mobile suggestions too but as per my research these two are the best in my budget.
Thanks
Wow!
I looked up both of the phone and they are both almost look the same. They are really nice phones. Back on topic.. I would suggest the HTC One V because of Sense 4.0 I only say this because of how big of a fan I am of sense but, I also saw that the Xperia will be upgrading to 4.0. I'm not to completely sure about what to choose but I'm thinking the HTC One V would be the was to go.
HTC One V has better screen than Sony Xperia U, a Super IPS LCD screen like the one on HTC One X
take a look at Sony Xperia Sola, it has memory card slot and has the same price as HTC ONE V
So there's no SD card slot for the HTC One?

HTC One V has a card slot, the one who doesn`t have a card slot is Sony Xperia U
so the HTC One V is better that Sony Xperia U in every aspect except SoC
Sony Xperia Sola has a card slot and a better SoC than HTC One V
on amazon Germany Sola is cheaper than HTC One V so i think it`s a better deal

That's a little weird... Do you know how much internal memory the Sony has? Sounds to me like your better choice would be the HTC because the SD card holds pictures. If you get a phone with little internal memory and no SD card, it's kinda pointless. I had a HTC Hero CDMA and I hated it then I swapped and got a HTC Evo Shift and I love it.. just suggesting the evo shift too but if you want a newer one i would go with the HTC

HTC One V has non removable battery too ...
Sony Xperia U has 8 GB internal memory ... out of which only 4 GB is available to the user. I did have Sola has my option but it goes out of my budget.
Hmm... this is a hard decision... I still think the HTC would the better go. It's very strange for HTC to make a nonremoveable battery like that. Just wondering are you into gaming on the your phone? It really doesn't matter a lot on the processor because on my evo shift it has like 850mhz and it plays GTA III with a little lag but the newer phones are double the processor. I think my major issue on my old phone was ram. My HTC Hero only had like 190 and it couldn't run angry birds. It can but really slow. I overclocked it to 758mhz and still laggy... But back to the topic... I noticed the Sony has a ring at the bottom that lights up. I could imagine that it takes up a good bit of battery and the if the HTC has better resolution, that's a really good thing! I did have a optimus S at one point too and the quality was bad...

I am not much of a gamer. On my current phone Optimus One P500 I only play Cut the rop nd other similar games. Xperia U is still getting my attention just bcoz of the Dual Core Processor .
Yeah... Do you know the Mhz on both phones? If so let me know

Both the phones have 1 Ghz processors only difference is HTC One V has Single Core and Xperia U has Dual core
hm... What do you think at this point? I really do like sense 4.0. Also the Sony is boxy and it doesn't look as appealing as the HTC.
Can u tell me more about sense 4.0 UI.. havent used a htc phone before...

Does any1 know about Sony's Timescape UI ?
This question sort of hits home.
I have been looking at the HTC ONE v myself. I am actually working on buying it and building custom roms specifically for this HTC device. The features are very extensive and I do believe that its actually a dual core 1 GHz processor even though their website only list the processor speed and not the processor type. I have had the opportunity to play with one and it is lightning fast when running several task at the same time, ie downloading, installing, and playing angry birds. I am in the process of starting a company and this is the phone that I am going to issue to all employees.
Xperia U
Well as far as screen goes both are equally good.
Xperia U has STE U8500 CPU with Mali400 GPU same as S2, check here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mali_(GPU)
One V's CPU and Adreno 205 doesn't stand a chance here.
One V has just 1GB internal(rest is unaccesible) while Xperia U doesn't have SD card but has 2GB for apps and 4GB for music+photos etc (if you need lots of space, choice is clear)
Rest if you want to read on UI, read about Xperia S UI it will be same http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_s-review-741p3.php (It is not bad in comparison to Sense)
For me Xperia U it will be!
I got my 4 month used Samsung galaxy note GT - N7000 only in 20000INR.
Better to buy a high end used device instead of new mid range device.
Best value for money and high resell value too.
Look for Decently used samsung galaxy S2 or Note..... You can find many great deals. Both are high on specs. As you are interested on applying custom roms here in xda community you can find many custom roms.
Its only my point of view.
HTC one and Sony Xperia U..... Both are good.
Go for any of them you will not regret.
Cheers
