As much as we all like to complain about our cappy's, one thing that we cannot argue about is how handy they are. I remember when having an html browser on your phone was a big deal.
I'm curious as to how you guys and girls use your captivates, that have caused a "WOW" moment among family, friends or casual acquaintance's.
I have one, to share for now,
I have my PC hooked to my tv and run movies through VLC media player. I use VLCremote to control vlc through wifi. Every time someone sees me use my phone to select a movie off my pc, and play it on the tv, they have an absolute fit, and don't believe that I am controlling the movie with my phone.
I have to let them play with it before it sinks in that it is possible. Then, even when they have control. they still have this puzzled look on their face.
Its one of those things that I can't get bored of doing to people, and it always seems to have the same effect!
This is kind of an Android thing but a simple live wallpaper still amazes my friends.
I have "Wow that was retarded" moments.
i navigate my media too using PlugPlayer, and windows media sharing service.
but i also get a kick out of syncing my bluetooth keyboard to my phone.
my keyboard has a touchpad on it and i can navigate my captivate with a mouse cursor!!
Logitech DiNovo Edge
Play movies then stream from phone to ps3...

My best wow moments are whenever I use Subsonic or Audiogalaxy to access my music collection at home and with the Voodoo sound enhancements, my captivate has completely replaced my iPod classic.
Allshare is also amazing. It's fun to be able to stream TV shows to the phone
And one of the most amazing things to me is that my Captivate has become a universal remote of sorts. I use it to control Media Player Classic, foobar2000, itunes and a few other aspects of my computer. That's what usually impresses my friends the most
The nice and bright screen catches the eye of everyone at my work.

when i first got it, coming from an iphone 2g, the screen blew me away. then i started using it, and had a lot of "wow this sucks" moments.
oh, and voodoo lagfix was a wow moment. and lcddensity.
Vnc through my phone to my computer over 3g for a remote desktop, and ssh through my phone.

I love how flexible Android is with all of the apps and the awesomeness of GPL.
As mentioned, VLC Remote is awesome to use in your home theater.
Mythmote lets me control all of my Mythfrontend boxes.
Chrome to Phone (and Fox to Phone in FF) with Bookmark to Desktop lets me seamlessly move between my phone and desktop as computing devices.
Firebird 2 kernel gives me BLN, the ability to mount CIFS shares, and use OpenVPN to get at my files that I don't want to trust to Dropbox even gives other Captivate owner a 'wow' moment.
Using ConnectBot to SSH to different systems at home to move around files or anything else is awesome.
RDP/VNC connectivity, Transdroid, Wifi Analyzer, and the free Square card reader and app just add to the awesomeness of Android.
Last, but not least, the combination of Titanium Backup and the amazing Devs here at XDA make it possible to reinstall my phone (a concept complete foreign to almost everyone else) at a moment's notice.
Any "Wow" moments that I have had with my captivate, is thanks to the Android OS and how versatile it is...like the very first time I used the bar code scanner to pull up merchandise online. In reguards to the actual phone itself, the only time I had a "Wow" moment was when i installed a custom ROM for the first time and realized how much faster, more responsive, and smoother it is capable of running.
Taking panoramics of the redwoods in muir woods this past weekend was pretty Wow!

Controlling XBMC from the phone with the app was amazing and works so well. Similarly, playing files over the network and using the phone as a touchpad for my PC with Gmote is also a really cool experience.
The screen size never stops to amaze my friends. Whenever my cappy gets on my pocket everyone is like Oh my god o.o thats a huge screen, how can you even hold it etc.. xD

Whipping out pandora at a party, hooked into a stereo. the screen if course is very impressive to everyone.
Mine was probably when I was using poweramp and I turned the bass up really high, and my stereo speakers vibrated so much that stuff was falling off my desk. Then I got a call, and my ringtone is that Nokia tune (lol, don't judge me) and it turned my "wow" into a "lol"

LOL! same!
they're also amazed by the 3d APP DRAWER
;D
when people see how thin the naked phone is they are usually impressed. people dont have the slightest clue what this is. many droid x's and fascinates here but no captivates. people like verizon i guess. the att users have iphails, and most of them have broken screens with screen protectors put over it after the fact to avoid cutting there fingers. (no insurance is a ***** ain't it, seriously i know 3 people with iphone4's and they all have broken glass and live with it)
i use graphing calculator apps to plot the movement of a piston in an engine to demostrate the effects of connecting rod length to people and to calculate actual compression ratios based on valve closing angle. people are amazed when they see a phone with such versitle calculators. i did the same on my iphone too. there are even apps out there that can graph equations with 3 vaiables in 3d space.
i also have a samsung dlna plasma screen tv. movie sharing is always impressive to people.
wow at hsupa and smooth kernels
I dont think that hsupa is enabled on my Rogers captivate... Wow

Some time back I got a bt gps to go with my PPC ... added OziExplorer and TomTom and now I don't get lost any more.
I've been reading ebooks on it since day 1.
I use it to play music in places that I could never have my own music before.
I sometimes take a movie or some episodes of my favorite shows when I'm going somewhere that involves a long wait (like waiting at the airport between flights).
I think being able to do all of the above is really COOL!
I got to wondering what other incredibly cool things I could do with my PPC that I haven't thought about yet.
So here's your chance to tell me (and everyone else here) what you think is a really great way of using your PPC.
It doesn't matter what particular unit you have, or if you think everyone already knows about it ... if you think it's really cool to be able to do whatever it is - I'd love to hear about it.
Can't say I've ever used it, but I think Fullscreen Terminal Services looks great. It'll freak you're friends out to see you using full Windows Media Center and Word on your universal

Thats cool
hey..a bit off topic but can some 1 please help me set a terminal client? i have absolutely no idea how to go about it..i have all necessary equipment.
*Hey VJ did you get time to look into the icon thingy for pocket plus and Vjphone tools.
Thanks..
Nish, I'm afraid I didn't get a chance to look at the icon thing. I need to backup before installing SPB, don't want it screwing up my system, but I was working late in the office last night. Can you try posting on this board as well. Not that many people see mine!
For terminal services, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=172248#172248
I didn't know either, and it doesn't take much. Have a look at my VJFullscreenTSC thread to find the concurrent user patch (might be on my webpage also?)
Doormat: what's cool? I'm an ebook man also (I like converting chm files to htm and using Isilo. I converted the CIA World Factbook as well, very useful, if never used!) I love watching simpsons whilst washing the pots. That's about all I use my universal for (and developing for WM5)!
V
Doormat, you could use your PPC as a remote control for your home audio i.e TV DVD SKY STERIO. I use novii remote delux. Works great and means you have full control over the TV, even when the misses has got the SKY remote.
I find that using it to make calls is COOL
I just like that fact it is multiple devices in one: a phone, organiser, sat nav, MP3 player, the list goes on.
The JAM is my first PPC- although I have been working with PDAs (Microsoft based ones mainly) for a long time at work- I always wished for someone to bring out a fully fledged PDA with phone capabilities; the JAM (and now a few others) was the perfect one to wait for.
Next PPC: the O2 Atom or Prophet
I use it for terminal server access
Citrix server access
5250 emulation
Movies
TV Episodes
TomTom
Tourch
Phone
Internet access
Remote control
Games
thats about it for now, but im always doing more with em..
How about as a paper weight?

Same here. Love walking the streets with a wireless headset.
I use my mini as a periscope. When I am reading the newspaper in the toilet at work I check if the boss came in using the camera.
I also use outlook as a kind of data-base of everything I know. It helps a lot, I wish I knew a more versatile and free one so I could keep the contacts by them self.
Best of all it helps me sleep. I wrote a web service on my server at home so that when my wife stays up to late tappping on the keyboard I can launch an app on the server remotely that tells me what programs she has running and lets me kill them from my ppc from under the covers.
I use it with a BT GPS receiver + tomtom and I also use it with Salling Clicker http://www.salling.com/ to control itunes to wirelessly stream music to my stereo.
Thats a about the extent of the cool things that I do with it.
Use TT5 with a wired gps and cradle for navigation, the phone obviously, watch ripped DVD's whilst I'm waiting at places, play the occasional game and surf the web or read and write emails - So I suppose I use most of the functions at some point during the working week.
Streaming Digital Satellite reception to my Universal.
As I have a Dreambox Digital Satellite Receiver which is connected to my home network I can stream video to my PCs on the network using VLC which in turn I can stream back video to my Universal using TCPMP. It works not 100% as I am getting an elongated picture and it is turned 90° to the GUI of TCPMP, but I can live with it until I expermiment some more with VLC.
I will tell you : Praying for a firmware release that clear al bugs
I just came from the i-phone (long story) and i'm looking for a app that i had after i jailbroke my I-phone. The hero hardware doesnt compare to the iphones. The hero just got livewallpapers not to long ago do to just recently get android 2.1. Nothing compared to Vwallpapers, but as close as you will get. Its just a moving background.
Something with hardware like the EVO, Nexus One etc will be needed to support a feature like that.
If HTC would enable a separate GPU support this would be possible.
It would be a big battery drain on current android phones. If it ran at all times in the background. Or even for just short times, it would still.
I would think this would be doable on the Hero, or any Android device. It's not much more than using a GIF image as a background.

We just got livewallpapers. Much less a video running in the background. While simultaneously moving and operating the desktop of htc sense.

yeah i kinow i have some videos on youtube showing with i was doing with v-wallpapers but i can't post them in here it keep tellimng me for spam reasons. I think if the hero can support livewallpapers i should be able to do it and yes v-wallpapers was a big battery drain but i had a car charger so i really didnt mind.
It should be doable. it is just showing a looping video. With out sound, if that is playing sound as well that would be really annoying.

How did it affect your battery life? I have to imagine your time between charges got drastically reduced.

You can lower media's volume with the Android as well, it would be nice to have this on our phones bg.. and seeing how fast creativity flows in XDA it would be soon till someone posts it.. You can edit your thread as Dev for Live Anime Wallpapers and see if devs come and work together and make it happen..

How difficult would it be to make a driver for an input device? I know that in the android sdk there's the ddms utility that I use for screen shots, but it also logs things on the device. Or what about the recently made public google app creator?
My dad is a professional piano player and uses a laptop on the music stand for his massive collection of sheet music. The music is just se up like a locally stored website. He has a foot assembly with 2 pedals to go forward and back through the pages. It plugs in with usb.
How dificult would that be to work with the usb port on a G tablet? I'm borrowing a friends for the night playing with it but we are looking to get one but this is a big factor.

Windows auto loads drivers for it though it gets lost in a mess of Human Interface Devices in the device manager so I'm not 100% sure which it is
I tried to Debug capture if it is getting a signal from anything from it but not seeing it.
This is what we're trying to work with with it:
You can see how I just did that in the browser,
That is a screen of the Lyrics, and here is a sheet music
and this is in the gallery.
However, he has an INSANELY massive collection, and his HTML pages link to each other so it is a large directory, and then pull up the sheet music via a link on the lyrics page. What I am imagining is that you'd click the link on lyrics page and it would ask "do you want to use gallery or other program" dialog.
What would be nice is mapping the foot pedal to that, or at least using finger swipe but I'm not sure how to in the browser.
You'll probably need to write a quick app for this. Something that will read the list of files, htm/png's whatever, provide a list, let the user pick a song and then display it, I'll bet that thing acts like a keyboard so all you'd need to do is listen for keyboard events, no driver required, and act accordingly, aka displaying the next sheet, etc.
What do ya use to listen for keyboard inputs? is that in DDMS? I'm not seeing any changes in the running log at the bottom of the app.
We both agree this is ALMOST perfect for him, but he may need bigger. The tab itself works great but when the sheet music is on it it's a tiny bit hard to read at the distance he needs.
He swears that Asus and Viewsonic are both having a 12" tab coming out but I can't find much info on that. What I did find has an i5 processor so that's a bit much. Whats the biggest android tab?

hi
played this app with 4 friends at work and it's brilliant... have some feedback for you:
1 - table (asus transformer)
4 - players (htc desire, htc sensation, galaxy nexus, htc desire hd)
vibrate or sound on device when action is required. example, on device showing user's hand, whenever they are required to action, vibrate.
display text based on orientation. e.g. two players, text can appear upside down.
ability to see table on devices showing hands.
better display of what hand won...e.g. state on table, garpunkal won with high card... steve won with a full house (aces over kings).
Awesome app though, would be great to see continued development. Definitely useful for people travelling that don't have cards/chips, but have their phones on them.

If you don't see the App in the market, it might be because your device doesn't have OpenGL ES 2.0 (about 10% of all devices accessing the Android Market).

Awesome that you like it! We have to admit that this project was just for a university task, so we just published it in the market as-is and didn't really expect that it will be really played (only geeks have so many Android devices). So it's awesome to hear that it's really used
All of your suggestions sound reasonable, but the further development of the app really depends on how much feedback we get and we will consider your ideas when publishing the next update of the app
By the way, a sound is already played on the players device when it's his turn, but vibrating is certainly better. And yeah, the winning hand is dismissed a little bit too fast, so text based information would help to understand what's going on.
Which text should we display based on orientation? We display the players names in the right orientation and also his last action, but not the chips if I remember correctly.
Cool app, was just playing with my friends. ^^
It's taking quite a bit of space tough.
thanks for responding...
This app is very useful for a pocket poker travel game... easier than having a stack of cards and chips!
Would definitely like an update on this!!
After playing it again today I have some additional feedback:
- A console would be nice, where it all the action is shown, with for example, Player won with Straight to K.
- Vibration would be good instead of the sound, when it's my turn.
- Players could be better distributed around the table
since I downloaded your app I play poker=) thnx
Hey guys, this is my first review on this forum so go easy on me. I spent some time researching this before my purchase and now playing with the headset, so I figured I'd save you guys some work if you decide you want to try out one of these.
I picked up this AGPtek (Actually a rebranded ColorCross model) from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O1WJ1D0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can get the ColorCross cheaper on other sites shipped from overseas, but I had a giftcard from Amazon and decided to get it quicker that way. (Make sure you find the one marked to fit 6 and 7 inch phones)
Here's a few pics (It has my Note 3 in it for the pics, but the Note 4 fits exactly the same):

My opinion on the product:
Cons:
Very uncomfortable for prolonged use. If you sit back in a recliner and let it sort of rest on your face it's not so bad, but when you're upright it hurts your nose after a while
Some light pollution around the corners and edges where it holds the phone
There is no magnet button like the normal google cardboard products include. I am going to head to Home Depot to pick up a couple of magnets to try to reproduce this feature, I'll update the review if this is successful. This button is what allows you to control things on the phone while wearing the headset
Pros:
Lense width is adjustable
The lenses screw in and out, allowing you to adjust the focus to suit your vision
Seems to provide a good view of the entirety of the phone screen
The Note 4 fits in it fine. It's a bit difficult to slide in and out, and I can't get it to fit when it's got the Spigen Case on it.
My family and I have had a lot of fun with this thing so far. There are several free apps with short demos. We enjoy:
Roller Coaster VR: A virtual roller coaster through a jungle
Crazy Swing VR: An insane carnival swing in the middle of a city that swings you up and down and upside down. Hang on to something if you do this standing up!
VR Cinema: A video player that makes it seem like you're sitting in a theater with a huge imax screen playing videos from your phone memory. All of the controls are based on your head movement (pause/play/fast forward/movie selection)
YouTube - Search for 3d SBS videos and there's plenty to watch
BSPlayer - It won't convert regular movies to the proper format like VR Cinema will, but if you have 3D SBS BluRay files on your phone or network it streams them beautifully in 3d
This thing is honestly pretty cool and will be more fun as more apps are created for it. I suspect that I have only scratched the surface.
I watched about half of Prometheus on it in 3D last night and it was a very fun experience. I will say that the picture is somewhat square and stretched vertically since it is using half of the screen for each eye, but you still get the full 3d effect and it really does feel like you're sitting in an IMAX. I'm sure the gorgeous screen of the Note 4 improves the experience substantially over other phone models.
I'm going to attempt to add the magnet feature as well as improve the padding to make it more comfortable for prolonged use. Other than that, this thing is a blast. Obviously it's not going to match up to the Samsung Gear VR, but that's not really in my budget right now.
Hope this is helpful for someone, thanks for reading!
Steve
Hi Steve, nice review.
I have a color cross too and it is pretty cool, however I agree that it doesn't fit my nose very well either!
Have you tried using Trinus Gyre? It is an Android app that you can use to play games like you would with Oculus Rift. It works really well - definitely work giving it a go
How abour using a wireless mouse instead to controll things on screen? I know other apps uses the gyro sensors of the phone to point and click on items on screen, right? I am still waiting for mine to arrive and really excited. I have downloaded couple of VR apps already including those that are maid for VR ONE and GOOGLE CARDBOARD.

I'll try out this app, thanks for the info. What games do you enjoy with this headset and this app?

Yes, some of the apps do let you look at things to select them. I don't have a bluetooth mouse, I do have a bluetooth Moga controller and haven't tried it yet.
I bought a version from Amazon branded as Teefan that includes the magnet. Colorcross has one too and I think the only difference is the brand name. I prefer movies on this generic VR set over my Gear VR Note 4. The view is not as close, so a LOT less screen door effect and I see the entire movie image without having to look left and right as well. Cmoar Cinema 4.0 has barrel and FOV adjustments that help make the picture better overall and help fit the display more.
