[Q] questions about voodoo and stock nexus s - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok Ive been searching for a while and couldn't really find anything that answered my question exactly and I don't want to be the noob asking questions and making new threads but anyway here goes
I was wondering if there is a way to get the voodoo sound kernel on a stock non rooted nexus s and if so, where can i download it and how would I install it?
I'm basically looking for something to amplify the sound of my headphones and what I have found so far is that voodoo is what I need. Thanks in advance.

While the description for that sounds like it's okay to use on any ROM, ogdobber makes a point with large bold letters that it's for CM7 only. The OP wants to stay on stock according to his first post...

yea, youre right.
im a little slow today, tired and a headache

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'm finding it to be a little more harder to just do it without rooting so that will probably be my next step. Figure I can squeeze some more battery life out of it too while I'm at it. Thanks again for the help

OK so I've rooted the phone and installed rom manager, now my question is there a kernel i can get without using a custom rom...and secondly can it be done through rom manager?
sorry for all the noob questions, this is my first time rooting and doing all the internal stuff myself and I dont wanna F anything up, had friends that could do it before but not available anymore. (paid too much to have a paper weight )

I believe that to be correct.
Put the zip on your sdcard, use ROM Mgr to boot into Clockwork Recovery, use Clockwork's install update from sdcard option to flash the kernel.
Should work. I haven't done it personally, yet, but I intend to, I want the voodoo sound tweaks.

When you go to flash through rom manager it will popup a dialog box asking if you want to back up your current rom and or wipe data and cache. Just do the backup.

I have a rooted SNS with the stock odexed ROM. I do have the Netarchy 1.2.3 Kernel with the Voodoo sound enhancments and it works great. I'm using the Voodoo control app with it. After initially unlocking your bootloader and installing root and recovery, make sure you run a nandroid backup on your stock setup if you plan to make any more "tweaks" to your system (just in case). I only run stock because the theming i do does not involve editing system apks.

Any GB roms that support HDMI and or 30FPS?

I am finaly getting some time to sit down and work see what I want to do with my Infuse. I have been doing a lot of reading and searching. I would love to go back go back to a GB rom. I loved them on my Captivate.
Saw how to get back to stock. Always want to know how to do that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
In searching it seems like of I go to a GB rom that I see have the issue with video only shooting at 15fps and the HDMI does not work. I do not think I am finding any that do not have this issue. Am I correct on these finding?
Is this the only major under line problem that is with GB roms? I know every rom is going to have some issues. I really want to make sure I am good with working BT since I live near Chicago and if you talk on the phone you have to have BT or you will get your butt pulled over.
I am happy with the performance of my phone. I am not in great need to OC it. Though I am seeing people getting up to 1.6g.
I am just trying to figure out where to start. I saw a post today about a leaked GB rom for the Infuse but it was closed and the orginal post was removed. I am guessing that it was fake or something was up with it.
The HDMI out is not a huge issue for me. I would like to keep the 30fps. I do not use video that often. But there are time when all of a sudden I need to shoot video and I do not have my normal camera on me. That is where I love my phone.
In short, as of today, on this forum, the answer is no. Gotta wait until AT&T rolls out GB.
OK thanks. Think I might hold off on going to GB for now then. Hope I can hold out. LOL
Actually, there is a deodexed rom in the developement section which is of the new beta gingerbread for AT&T. The kernel that came with the leak supports HDMI out and 30fps. Although, some users report unreliable cell connections or loss of signal.
Search around, you'll find it.
Other than the new UCKI3 leak - nope.
Thank you.
Think I will give it a try.

the link above doesnt support hdmi with the included kernel. you must flash the ucki3 kernel but recovery is hosed. i didnt want the complaints or redundant questions about how to flash out of it with no recovery.

for hdmi that would work or you can flash the full odex rom in odin that is posted in the general section.
an easy way to flash the ucki3 kernel without odin if you want to do it that way is to flash the deodexed rom then download sgs kernel flasher from the market. download the full odin package to your phone and open kernel flasher. choose the odin package as the kernel. the app is smart. it will find the zimage in there and flsah it.
remember to backup entropy's kernel first. if you need recovery you will need kernel flasher or odin to restore a kernel kernel with working recovery.
i hope we see something with bootloaders soon because without source code im not sure there will be a rainbow fix.
or if you wait an a few ill post the hdmi kernel as a cwm file. i still recommend to have kernel flasher either way. (it flashes cwm packaged kernels as well, even if they are packaged with a rom)

For me I flashed a lot of ROM's with my Captivate. I learned a lot. Number on this was if you are only 90% sure on something ask. Saw way to many people mess up their phone because they did not ask. So I got in this habbit.
I am not worried about doing it. I want to make sure I am doing it right. Once I get the first few flashes down in this phone I will be happy. It is just that the Infuse it a little different then the Captivate with flashing.

Good news in this particular case - It's next to impossible to accidentally clobber our bootloaders. (Heck, we haven't even successfully flashed Rogers bootloaders onto an AT&T Infuse) Only one Infuse has ever had its bootloaders clobbered, and that was part of a highly dangerous experiment for which the device owner volunteered.
Pretty much for the time being (UCKH1 could change things once someone figures out how that update flashed a bootloader), it's basically impossible to fully brick a device with Odin/Heimdall - or CWM either.

Don't use rom manager aka rom mangler!!! Thanks management!!!

Thanks management
SORRY luc or any mod that will delete this lol just going though the recent threads and no matter what we say they always seem to install it!!!
close or delete at your leasure
please use krylons cwm final

if you installed rom manager delete it and take the update.zip from krylons thread and put it to the root of your sd card..
*Note*
Newer kernels dont require this as cwm is built directly into the kernel..

I just got done reading this thread about not using Rom Manager EVER on the SGS4g, so I went ahead and used it and my phone boot loops now....what gives? I figured that it may work with a vibrant ROM as I heard it works on the regular galaxy s, so I Odin back to stock, reinstalled Rom manager and flashed cm7 for the vibrant...now my phone won't even boot...what gives? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's almost like Rom manager doesn't work on this phone or something. Someone should make a step by step guide for flashing this phone...you know, like an SGS4G Bible.

If you installed it and didn't use it, no problem.
If you used it to 'install', then you earned a one way trip to using Odin to get everything back.
Raver, if you don't mind could you please make the title have capital letters and not lowercase like it does. There is no reason for it other than everytime I open the forum, it bugs me. Also, what is up with the "bold" html command ""?
I wonder what goes through other peoples heads when they decide hey I'm going to root my phone and install a custom Rom. I mean the first thing I did was a Google search on how to root SGS4G. That lead me to XDA. Then I found the actual SGS4G forum and began searching for guides. This was the same process for my MT3G and my G1. I don't understand why people would just grab Rom manager and assume it's a cure all. Boggles the mind.

that works out fine if the first thing you get led to is xda, but if you are unlucky like me then you end up at joe schmoe's tech blog or something similar and they tell you that any android phone can be "hacked" with superoneclick and rom manager. thats where the true issue lies, imo: that not the sites state the same info and most of that is wrong.
Thanks raver!

+1 Sure there were multiple sites related to the subject, which is why you take a little bit of time to examine more than one. I know I didn't just click the first option and run with it.
This post got me thinking. We have the SGS4G Bible but apparently it can be a little overwhelming and too much information for some people to digest before they start modding their phones.
Keeping the biblical theme maybe a simplified "SGS4G TEN COMMANDMENTS" that contain the ten most common questions and answers, noob mistakes, and does and don'ts in one place. Simple, easy to read, and easy to refer people to. For example...
Commandment 1: DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER...EVER!
Commandment 2: DO NOT FLASH VIBRANT ROMS....EVER! - THE SGS4G IS NOT A VIBRANT!
etc, etc....you get the idea.
Any thoughts?

For GB, just flash (oden/heimdall/heimdall one-click) any gb kernel in the dev forum and you should get CWM (unless the kernel is a fully stock kernel, like the first one in my one-click collection).
A little lecture could help you. This has been answered like 100 times a day.
Use latestodin, flash ravers kj6 odin rom (yes, you have to be in dl mode and rom file goes in pda and i think you need to decompress the .zip file so u use the .tar) and after that just flash drhonk kj1 kernel so you can get root and cwm. Then you can flash gb roms without problem.
Theres a big post saying that Rom Manaher doesnt work wotj raver.
actualy rom manager has a Galaxy s 4G setting now so yes it does work

Also, tehgyb gave you all the good links (thanks man!)
Instead of insisting on using rom mangler, you should listen and read.
If all you want is clockwork mod + root + gb, just heimdall one-click my kj6 kernel and stock rom... The link that says: Download SMS KJ6 Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders
After you run that, you can flash roms with CWM (not rom manager) as you wish, and you will always have root with that kernel.

Is there any way I can apply this mode without flashing? For example - something like the way APKs are installed. Or pushed somehow ?

I do apologize if my questions sound stupid. I don't have that much experience. Just enough to root my phone and remove the bloat...

Why would he flash Dr. Honks kernel? Why Odin?
If he is rooted on GB he can use SGS Kernel Flasher to get one of BH kernels with CWM.
There are detailed directions here.
We need to keep it simple for noobs
Call me noob or even better - call me lazy
I was just trying to find out if there is an easy way to "install the mod" for the camera....Avoiding flashing and using different kernels...
It's a shame having such a Camera and not using its full potential.
I don't know how difficult it could be for a Developer to create an APK.
Think everybody having SGS4G will really appreciate having such an APK installed on his/her phone...
Another thought (if its possible to create such an APK) - why don't you put it on the Android Market? Suppose there are a lot of SGS4G owners that are not familiar with this forum ...
lumin30 -> thanks for the link
BTW - I've read almost all the posts in the section for the SGS4G... I just don't want to "dig deeper" in my phone. Rooting and tweaking it is enough for me. I'm not a big fan of Overclocking...

I was just trying to find out if there is an easy way to "install the mod" for the camera....Avoiding flashing and using different kernels...
It's a shame having such a Camera and not using its full potential.

Well the tweaks we've put together make overclocking useless,
there are apks out there that install tweaks such as sdcard booster which installs the readahead tweak, but really cwm is the best way to flash tweaks
As for your answer you can get the apk root explorer or any other file manager with root access and move the files to their appropriate place as well as fix their permissions, but you would really have to know what your doing to use that method which is why flashing is actually the easiest ways for users even noobs :/ its a complex tweak
If you need help I know the community/ myslef would be more than happy to assist you so that you could enjoy your phone that much more

nevermind... the man himself answered.

If I remember correctly to open a dev account with google to post things, even free things, costs like 50 bucks. Then you have the issue of people installing down rating and possibly reporting it as a fake/fraud.
Even if you post it and forget it that is money out of your pocket. And a potential for people to attempt to defame you.
I know this because I helped a friend create a theme for golauncher and OMFG the headaches. Finally just pulled it. It was limited using the tools provided by google and still had people *****ing and moaning about it not working on their phone...
BTW just because you install a custom kernel doesnt mean you HAVE to OC. It gives the option and opens the doors to other improvements.

ok assuming you are and you are running gb
Go to android market and download sgs kernel flasher
then go here to get kernels for gb
These kernels allow oc and ov and contains cmr
the first boot will take a while 3-10 min

The guide will show you how to use the heimdall one clicks. If you are comfortable enough doing that and are already on 2.3.6 then the antonx one click in the Heimdall One Click thread will get you rooted with custom recovery so you can install ICS flavor you like.

Dude, If you can't figure it out by reading the guide that eollie linked you to stay on stock. I'm not saying that to be mean but it is literally idiot proof.
