Anyone using the car dock as a desktop dock?

Hey all, lurked here a lot lately with all the Froyo news, relative newcomer to posting here though.
I've got both the Google desktop dock and the Google car dock, but I hate how the Nexus One can fall out of the desktop dock just by bumping it lightly, or breathing on it, or looking at it cross-eyed, etc.
I'm thinking about ordering a second car dock to use a desktop dock, but curious whether plugging the base into a PC will draw enough current to charge the Nexus One or not. I know the car charger draws 2A for a quick charge, but I didn't think a typical USB cable could draw that much amperage from a PC. I'd guess that since the regular Nexus One wall charger only draws 1A, that a typical USB plug would suffice to at least act as a wall charger throughout the day...
Anyone out there doing this? Anyone got any advice either way? Or know of a rotating desktop dock that can fit a Nexus One that leaves the bottom exposed to plug in a micro USB cable?

im not sure of what the effects would be..... but i do recall reading somewhere in the literature that came with my car dock warning against plugging the dock into the computer. pretty sure it was an issue with syncing or some crap like that. will it actually hurt it, i wouldn't think so. just making it known that it was warned against and that you might wanna double check the paperwork before you tried it. if i was to do as you suggested, id find another wall adapter. i would think that the one from the desktop dock you purchased would likely work.
or you could keep your current dock and simply find some weight to glue to the bottom of it or something. i'm sure something fairly easy could be done to make it heavier/more stable.

I've used wall warts from other devices to power my car dock in the house. As long as they have a mini-usb port to fit the dock you should be fine.

No, the third pin that connects to the phone sends some sort of signal that tells the phone which dock you're using. I love my car dock, just when it's not powered. I can charge the phone later, with a charger that wont make my phone red hot.
I have thought about using the car dock at my desk, just because I can use my phone and not lose the charging connection. And yes, I have used the 5v wall wart from the desktop dock and it powers the car dock just fine, and imagine that, it doesn't over heat either.
I am not using my 12v adapter that came with the car dock ever again. just plugged directly into the phone made the thing super hot after a few minutes. sorry to get off topic.

I believe that you should be able to use something like docklauncher to switch the behavior associated with each dock. No personal experience to back up this belief though

[Q] Car Charger issue

So I was charging my phone using the car accessory from samsung (link). Bought it off amazon. But, the last time I remember charging it, when I disconnected the charger from the 12V line, I noticed a strong smell of burnt wires coming from it.
I didn't try to charge my phone again, I don't want my car or phone to burst on fire or something. I really know little about electrical stuff.

Maybe the charger was cheap and overheated, which maybe burnt the circuit wires. I don't know much either but I think that could be the problem. Maybe you can try to charge it once more, to actually see if it still works. It shouldn't do anything to your phone unless the microusb is like cracked or burnt. Lemme know how it goes.
If you really want to get technical, you can maybe dismantle the casing and see what the problem is.

Battery suddenly dead on both dock and tablet

Until yesterday, my TF700 was working perfectly fine, but now I'm concerned as the battery in both the dock and the tablet have stopped working.
The AC adaptor's connected to the dock and I always charged both the tablet and the dock together for the most part.
I went to check the device this morning and suddenly found that they're not working at all.
Yesterday evening, I tried switching on the tablet and it would switch on and reach the ASUS screen, but not fully boot up.
I bought it from Amazon's Amazon Warehouse division and I have until the 31st to return this, but in the meantime, I'd like to know why the batteries have died on me suddenly and is there anything I can do about it.

If it's a genuine hardware failure, you'd have to return -- unless you're very proficient at handling and replacing sensitive electronics yourself (microwelding, for example).
It has been reported before, and could be fixe din almost every case by letting the 700 be dead for at least an hour, and then let it fully charge while off (!) -- just let it sit hoked up to the wall charger for at least 8 hours. Then try to turn it on again.

I'll give that advice of yours a try especially as I don't want to have to return it if it's something that can be easily sorted out.

It never hurts trying -- you aren't exactly the first to describe this, but luckily, pretty much all of the others were saved.

I finally managed to get the problem sorted out as it seems that the connection to the port on the keyboard had somehow come a bit loose without me noticing it.
Unfortunately, I have a new problem in that the cable itself seems to have died in that it won't work any more with the adapter as it started crackling a bit when I knocked the connector attached to the AC adaptor itself gently by accident. :crying:

Well, I hope I am right in assuming this is not your luckiest week, huh? Is the cable damaged near the wall charging part? (That's what I understand.) The replacement cables probably are not that expensive, so I'd plonk down on a new one instead of initiating "daredevil repair mode".
Saying that gives me that MacGyver feeling. Duct tape and a pair of scissors would be all that he needs to fix this.
Oh, and maybe a pair of toothpicks and an old sock, just for looks.

The cable itself is fine (it's not worn down to the wire literally like a lot of cables and AC adapters you get for devices like iPods and Galaxy S II's), it's just that it has this weird burnt-like smell at the end connector that plus into the USB socket on the AC adaptor.
As for replacement cables, I'm surprised that they're not that easy to buy offline.

Agreed -- buying them offline is a definite hassle. I have seen them online, though, and you can even hunt down the charger parts or the TF101 and TF201 Prime. They will work flawlessly.
BTW and FWIW (gotta love acronyms), my charging cable smells a bit funny at the end too. This specific one has to put through a lot of power, so I'm not even that surprised.

In all seriousness though, I love my TF700, it's just a shame that it's such a pain in the ass (not literally!) to buy official accessories in the shops and it's not as if you can buy a USB cable for it in the shops unlike ones for the iPod, iPad and iPhone.

No, it's a definite PITA
-- I had hoped that the new EU rulings concerning all smartphones needing to provide a microUSB charging input would extend to tablts, but so far this has not been the case, unfortunately.

Just giving you guys a update concerning my device: It seems now that both batteries don't want to work any more for some reason or other as of yesterday. I've checked both the official USB cable and a third-party cable plugged into the official USB plug and they're not charging up the device at all.
The tablet can connect to my laptop as a media device without any problems, but I'm confused as to why it's not working at all when plugged into a USB adapter.
In any case, I'm going to order a AC adapter from eBay later today and see if that works or not.

[Q] Need Replacement Charging Port

The tablet needs a new charging/interface port and was wondering if anyone knows where I can get one?
I have searched Ebay and the net for a used/new one. The port looks fine but when plugging the cable in it won't charge. Sometimes I can get it to if I push and hold it just right however this is tricky to do and does not work often. So right now it is a dead brick. The pins must not be making full contact for some reason.

Ive bought parts from these guys before, I don't see a charging port but might be worth giving them an email and asking

Thanks but I would rather not have to order parts from Sweden. If I have to I'll just keep watching Ebay. Every so often one pops up but doesn't last very long.

The parts I ordered took about 4-6 weeks to arrive iirc

Just installed a new (used off Ebay) charging port with fingers crossed that it will allow the tablet to charge. I also have a new high quality charging cord (PWR+) and two ASUS wall chargers that I know work. Plugged the tablet in and was relieved to see the tablet come right on and show it charging. Let it charge to about 20% and then decided to unplug it so I could put the ring back on the tablet so it is all back together. Get the ring on and plug the tablet back in and nothing. I'm about to throw this thing in the trash right now. So fed up with these charging issues. What changed? All I did was unplug it, put the ring on, and plug back in.
So for kicks I decide to try the other wall charger and what do you know....it came on immediately and started charging and is still charging. I'm afraid to touch the thing now. Seems once it is charging and undisturbed it will charge to 100% no problem. However, when going to recharge it won't charge. Could there be something in the charging mechanism causing the thermal to trip in the wall chargers? Is there possibly a small short somewhere in the charging mechanism? Anyone have an opinion on why this is happening? Only other thing I can think of is doing a full wipe/reset and maybe flashing another rom (is currently on newest Android Revolution HD) once it is charged up.

Could the ring (I assume you mean Bezel ? ) or the screws near the port be shorting the charging port to earth/ground/chassis ?

Yep.. Sry.. The bezel. Not sure how but anything is possible. Would indicate to me a faulty charging port or charger cord and is happening on multiple. Tablet is still allowing me to charge it at this time after switching chargers and with the bezel on so will have to see how it goes.

Fingers crossed it was a coincidence with the first charger, if not, I'd try taking the bezel off again and see if you can spot the short / see if it works again with the bezel off, or even just with the screws out

Car dock questions

Sorry if this has already been posted. I have the Note 4 and I am new to wireless charging. I wanted a car solution that's completely wireless (ie charging and audio). I've been looking at The Air Dock but I'm still not sure if that will be the best solution. Does anyone have any experience with that?
Also, I'm thinking that I will go with an internal receiver but I just read that there are 1mm thick ones and 0.5mm thick ones. Guess I should try to get a 0.5mm thick receiver? What is the max current that I can get with these coils? Is it enough to charge the phone while running Google Maps, Pandora, bluetooth, etc?
I will probably want a case as well. What do I need to know so that it will work with a wireless charger? I saw some car chargers that have you put a slim metal plate in your case so that magnets can hold onto the phone, which I like. Should I look for something like this? Will that also work with The Air Dock?
Sorry about all the questions! I'm just trying to make sure I get the best dock for my phone.

Just a suggestion, wireless charging is not capable of taking advantage of the Quick Charge 2.0 feature and to my way of thinking the car would be the place you'd want the fast charging. I got an Incipio Quick Charge 2.0 12v adapter for my car.

Thanks for the suggestion but I was wondering if it was possible to wireless charge and still run all these apps. I understand it won't be a quick charge or anything but as long as the charge is enough to keep the battery at neutral or positive charge then that's fine. I would assume the answer is yes

With my Note 3, a 2 amp wired charger was barely able to charge with Google Navigation running. I think you would lose charge doing the same thing with a wireless charger.

Agreed. Current wireless charging probably wouldn't be able to keep up with the high battery demands of navigation, streaming music, Bluetooth, and the screen.

Trouble with Note 4
So I got my new Air Dock 2.0 in and I'm having trouble with getting the Note 4 to stick with this case even though it's glossy. Also, (and I knew this would be an issue, ugh!) the wireless adapter inside the phone isn't CENTERED in the phone so of course it won't wireless charge when the phone is CENTERED on the Air Dock!! This makes me so mad! The damn adapters should be centered so any dock will work once the phone is centered...
Lastly, does anybody have any apps that will automatically launch once connected to the Air Dock??

Ok but how can I trigger it in the car? If I use wireless triggers won't it also trigger it when I get home and charge my phone on my wireless charger?

are you using it with the samsung wireless charging back? if so, any chance of some pics? also, are you using the nano-foam or magnets and for either, how "grippy" is it? the roads around me are full of potholes so cant have my note 4 flying off.

Ugh so I'm frustrated with the Air Dock. It's GREAT with my Nexus 5...it seems to be designed especially for that. My wife's Note 4? Not so much. I bought the wireless adapter that you put in the back of the phone to activate wireless charging but it takes all of 1 second to realize the coil inside that adapter is not centered with the phone. It's directly over the battery which is offset. So when the phone is put on the Air Dock it needs to be slightly off of the Air Dock to get a good charge going. Well this means there's less contact between the phone and Air Dock. The other thing I noticed is the case on the phone matters as well. Originally I had a softer, flat case on the phone which worked okay with the Air Dock but then that got dirty so my wife got a more glossy one that has a slight curve in the back. I think this may actually be caused a little by the wireless adapter protruding in the back. It's a very tight case so it's more noticeable. I can provide links to the cases if you want. I emailed the Air Dock with a picture of the phone's wireless adapter but they just said to try to use the magnetic sticker included and keep it clean. The magnetic sticker doesn't do much, especially for a big phone like the Note 4. I'm tempted to actually cut a really thin sheet of metal and stick it back there instead. Sorry this is long but I'm frustrated and ended up buying the iBolt dock for my wife which is fine but I really wanted to use the Air Dock. It's a great concept it's just not the best design. I even had my friend 3D print a sort of dock and then stuffed those super powerful magnets in it and it sort of worked but then it blocked the charging too much. Ugh
