Hey all, lurked here a lot lately with all the Froyo news, relative newcomer to posting here though.
I've got both the Google desktop dock and the Google car dock, but I hate how the Nexus One can fall out of the desktop dock just by bumping it lightly, or breathing on it, or looking at it cross-eyed, etc.
I'm thinking about ordering a second car dock to use a desktop dock, but curious whether plugging the base into a PC will draw enough current to charge the Nexus One or not. I know the car charger draws 2A for a quick charge, but I didn't think a typical USB cable could draw that much amperage from a PC. I'd guess that since the regular Nexus One wall charger only draws 1A, that a typical USB plug would suffice to at least act as a wall charger throughout the day...
Anyone out there doing this? Anyone got any advice either way? Or know of a rotating desktop dock that can fit a Nexus One that leaves the bottom exposed to plug in a micro USB cable?

im not sure of what the effects would be..... but i do recall reading somewhere in the literature that came with my car dock warning against plugging the dock into the computer. pretty sure it was an issue with syncing or some crap like that. will it actually hurt it, i wouldn't think so. just making it known that it was warned against and that you might wanna double check the paperwork before you tried it. if i was to do as you suggested, id find another wall adapter. i would think that the one from the desktop dock you purchased would likely work.
or you could keep your current dock and simply find some weight to glue to the bottom of it or something. i'm sure something fairly easy could be done to make it heavier/more stable.
just my $.02
I've used wall warts from other devices to power my car dock in the house. As long as they have a mini-usb port to fit the dock you should be fine.
Will the clock feature from the desktop dock work with the car dock?

No, the third pin that connects to the phone sends some sort of signal that tells the phone which dock you're using. I love my car dock, just when it's not powered. I can charge the phone later, with a charger that wont make my phone red hot.
I have thought about using the car dock at my desk, just because I can use my phone and not lose the charging connection. And yes, I have used the 5v wall wart from the desktop dock and it powers the car dock just fine, and imagine that, it doesn't over heat either.
I am not using my 12v adapter that came with the car dock ever again. just plugged directly into the phone made the thing super hot after a few minutes. sorry to get off topic.
I believe that you should be able to use something like docklauncher to switch the behavior associated with each dock. No personal experience to back up this belief though

Anyone know of a dynamo hand crank charger that'll work with the N1's weird little flat mini usb port?
Taking a trip to europe in the next 5 months, and I don't want to carry an extra battery or two..

It's not a weird/flat usb port. It's microUSB, and that's standard around the world man.
I have actually seen a handcrank emergency flashlight (saw it today actually for $5) that has an adapter that you can plug in a car charger to. ie crank the flashlight, attach that car charger adapter to the flashlight, plug in your phone charger, plug in your phone. lol Seems complicated, its actually pretty small. And meant for emergency use anyway.
quick google pulls up this, which is even better
http://www.soscharger.com/ $25.99

Does anyone have pictures of the internals of the charger for the official Nexus One car dock?
The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of buying the car dock and hiding the charger out of view. The problem is that where I'm wanting to put it, there is not enough room to install a 12v outlet alone, much less the outlet and the charger, so I'm wanting to hard wire it all, but need to know how much room the internals of the charger are going to take up to see if it will fit where I want to put it.
i ran into a similar problem to you. I ended up not bothering to pull apart the 5v regulator as it appeared to be glued together. unless someone was very determined to get it apart you you not find anybody who has. I ended up buying a cigarette lighter socket and sticking it and the regulator in my fusebox out of the way.
if this isn't an option you can you any standard microusb charger cable as long as it is rated for 1 amp. I'm pretty sure all 1 amp chargers have the signal pin shorted to the power pin to indicate to the device they can pull 1 amp as opposed to 500ma. If you get one that can be taken apart that would work for your project.
Best of luck with your install! I've hardwired 4 different gadgets into my car and love how clean and tidy everything is. just one cable dangling in my car is too much. please post pics if you get it tucked away as you want, i'd love to see how it works out!
Sounds like space is at a premium. Another option is to hard wire in a Belkin USB charger which is heaps smaller. Then just run a USB charge cable from it to the car dock. Check out the harness I made up in the center bottom pic to get an appreciation of how small it is. Downside is the Belkin Micro USB only puts out 1A as compared to 2A from the genuine charger. So the car dock may struggle a bit.

I like your setup, I may do something like that myself, but not for the project at hand, but rather just to have a 1amp USB charger for whatever.
Now as for the original project itself, what I'm wanting to do is mount the car dock in my 98 Chevy Blazer right below the review mirror. My Blazer happens to have the Temp. and millage computer readout right above the review mirror mounted to the headliner. There's plenty of places to hook into a switched 12v line in the housing for the millage readout, but as I stated before, it's not enough to house the entire car charger and/or and 12v socket.
I'd prefer to use the original charger that comes with the dock so as to not starve it of power. I'm hoping it's just a small circuit board with wires running to the various connectors. I guess I'll just have to buy it and check it out myself. I don't want anyone to ruin theirs just to satisfy my curiosity, not that I would expect anyone to do that to begin with.
I really like my Transformer, but the lack of charging options is an issue.
I'm looking for a dual usb port wall charger (a similar car charger would be great) that will output the 15v needed by the Asus tablets. I don't mind bringing extra cords, but don't want to carry a bunch of wall warts with me when I travel and I have a lot of other USB devices. I'd prefer one without a permanent cord. Anyone found one that works?
The trickle charge options aren't effective since even overnight I only get 20% or so of charge.
What exactly are you trying to do...
The supplied charger charges both dock & Tablet where as the usb will only charge tablet..
Am I missing something?

You can safely use the Asus charger to charge all your other devices..
And if you have the tab with dock, you can hook another device to be charged up to the USB port of the dock. As long as the tab is docked and on, the dock USB will output 5V.
I believe He's asking if there are other USB chargers with more than one port that meet the TF700s power needs.

That's it exactly. Previously I was able to travel with just a single 4 port USB charger (something like the Skiva PowerFlow QuadFire) which would charge my iPad, phone, camera, and a travel router while only taking up a single wall outlet (which also means only a single plug converter for overseas). I'd love to do the same with the TF700, but would settle for a dual USB port charger (one to port charging the TF700 and one to charge my phone, simultaneously).
While I can charge my phone from the dock's USB port I don't always have the dock with me and it doesn't allow me to maximize untethered usage. Generally I use the dock as an extended battery (assuming I'm not using remote desktop or the card reader) - docking the tablet to charge it, then plugging the dock into the charger while I continue to use the undocked tablet. If the dock supplied power to the USB port without the tablet attached I'd be fine, but no such luck.
Anyway, like many, the goal with the transformer is to minimize the weight and "stuff" I have to carry (in my case a laptop). If I could reduce things further by dropping a dedicated charger for one that served many purposes at the same time it would be great. Something like the Anker Astro3 battery back up but smaller and without the battery would work well.
Maybe, try this one...you could charge your Transformer, because of the DC Output, your Notebook and of course other USB Devices...
I think he mightve wanted something like thiswww.buy.com/prod/apricorn-ausb-y-usb-power-adapter-y-cable-3-28ft/q/loc/101/202641110.html. It doesnt give any tech specs, however it states that it would increase the output power. So I would assume the volts would stay the same, but you might get more amps from usb. Unfortunately, it would just be a faster trickle charge.

I got a couple of these from Meritline:

I use my charger that came with the transformer in the main plug and the USB ports for my phone and Kindle. I got two from Meritline and brought a third at Target. You still need the Transformer charger but at least you get two more USB ports.
Sorry if this has already been posted. I have the Note 4 and I am new to wireless charging. I wanted a car solution that's completely wireless (ie charging and audio). I've been looking at The Air Dock but I'm still not sure if that will be the best solution. Does anyone have any experience with that?
Also, I'm thinking that I will go with an internal receiver but I just read that there are 1mm thick ones and 0.5mm thick ones. Guess I should try to get a 0.5mm thick receiver? What is the max current that I can get with these coils? Is it enough to charge the phone while running Google Maps, Pandora, bluetooth, etc?
I will probably want a case as well. What do I need to know so that it will work with a wireless charger? I saw some car chargers that have you put a slim metal plate in your case so that magnets can hold onto the phone, which I like. Should I look for something like this? Will that also work with The Air Dock?
Sorry about all the questions! I'm just trying to make sure I get the best dock for my phone.

Just a suggestion, wireless charging is not capable of taking advantage of the Quick Charge 2.0 feature and to my way of thinking the car would be the place you'd want the fast charging. I got an Incipio Quick Charge 2.0 12v adapter for my car.

Thanks for the suggestion but I was wondering if it was possible to wireless charge and still run all these apps. I understand it won't be a quick charge or anything but as long as the charge is enough to keep the battery at neutral or positive charge then that's fine. I would assume the answer is yes

With my Note 3, a 2 amp wired charger was barely able to charge with Google Navigation running. I think you would lose charge doing the same thing with a wireless charger.

Dang I was worried about that. So what is the max current that wireless coils can do? Is it 1 amp?

Agreed. Current wireless charging probably wouldn't be able to keep up with the high battery demands of navigation, streaming music, Bluetooth, and the screen.
Trouble with Note 4
So I got my new Air Dock 2.0 in and I'm having trouble with getting the Note 4 to stick with this case even though it's glossy. Also, (and I knew this would be an issue, ugh!) the wireless adapter inside the phone isn't CENTERED in the phone so of course it won't wireless charge when the phone is CENTERED on the Air Dock!! This makes me so mad! The damn adapters should be centered so any dock will work once the phone is centered...
Lastly, does anybody have any apps that will automatically launch once connected to the Air Dock??

Tasker can do this.
Ok but how can I trigger it in the car? If I use wireless triggers won't it also trigger it when I get home and charge my phone on my wireless charger?

are you using it with the samsung wireless charging back? if so, any chance of some pics? also, are you using the nano-foam or magnets and for either, how "grippy" is it? the roads around me are full of potholes so cant have my note 4 flying off.
Ugh so I'm frustrated with the Air Dock. It's GREAT with my Nexus 5...it seems to be designed especially for that. My wife's Note 4? Not so much. I bought the wireless adapter that you put in the back of the phone to activate wireless charging but it takes all of 1 second to realize the coil inside that adapter is not centered with the phone. It's directly over the battery which is offset. So when the phone is put on the Air Dock it needs to be slightly off of the Air Dock to get a good charge going. Well this means there's less contact between the phone and Air Dock. The other thing I noticed is the case on the phone matters as well. Originally I had a softer, flat case on the phone which worked okay with the Air Dock but then that got dirty so my wife got a more glossy one that has a slight curve in the back. I think this may actually be caused a little by the wireless adapter protruding in the back. It's a very tight case so it's more noticeable. I can provide links to the cases if you want. I emailed the Air Dock with a picture of the phone's wireless adapter but they just said to try to use the magnetic sticker included and keep it clean. The magnetic sticker doesn't do much, especially for a big phone like the Note 4. I'm tempted to actually cut a really thin sheet of metal and stick it back there instead. Sorry this is long but I'm frustrated and ended up buying the iBolt dock for my wife which is fine but I really wanted to use the Air Dock. It's a great concept it's just not the best design. I even had my friend 3D print a sort of dock and then stuffed those super powerful magnets in it and it sort of worked but then it blocked the charging too much. Ugh
I'm looking for one that holds the entire phone, not just the battery. I would like it for my desk at work and not a Qi charger, but a USB dock.
The style I see on Amazon is the same one just dressed up by various vendors and may be OK, but I would like a very nice quality dock if possible.
Thanks!
Ouch. No response. OK, I may go ahead and try a "universal" charging stand, one that will hold my phone and my LG adapter. When I find the "right one", I will post back FWIW.

I have that in my cart still! How is the balance with the phone inserted? Can you use the touchscreen reliably while docked?
I did end up just receiving this stand:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Stan...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01
I bought it with the included charger and cable since it was only a few cents more than without and I thought the 90 degree angled cord would be pretty cool, but it turns out that this cable will NOT work with the fast charger. It works with any brand wall plug as long as it is not a quick/fast charger. So, no biggie I guess. The stand is very sturdy and stable. I can use the touchscreen while docked without any issues. Totally not as convenient as having a drop in stand with a charger built in. I have to manually plug it in when charging is desired. So, for 10 bucks, I am keeping it and I may get the one you have for convenience sake.
