I present to you an 'official' build including the kernel, radio, and full-blown froyo tastiness, for the USCC Samsung Mesmerize. Pre-rooted for your convenience, just download and flash with the latest version of ODIN. These are stock images plus root so your phone will function as if you just turned it on for the first time, albeit with a finger that magically instills root powers into any device you touch..
README
Step 0.5: I recommend disabling the Voodoo Lagfix before doing any of this. You need your sdcard partitioned normally. Let me repeat: Disable the Voodoo Lagfix if you are using a Voodoo kernel prior to flashing the Odin files.
Step 1
Download ODIN here: Odin v1.3
Step 2
Install the Samsung USB drivers: 64bit | 32bit
Step 3
WARNING: These files are for the USCC Samsung Mesmerize. Do NOT flash these to another device.
Download the ODIN package: USCC Froyo [ODIN]
Step 4
Unzip the ODIN package and you will find two files. One ends in tar.md5 This is the ODIN package that you will flash to your device. The other file ends in .pit. This file is a configuration file of sorts for your device. It is not needed unless you have trouble.
Step 5
Backup the data on your device. You are going to lose it.
Step 5.5
Backup the data on your device. It is not coming back.
Step 6
Open up ODIN. Load the tar.md5 file into the PDA section.
Step 7
Put your phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is to issue the "reboot download" command from adb. If you don't have adb installed, simply download the attached adb.zip. Extract the files to a new folder and open up a command prompt in that folder by holding down shift then right-clicking inside the folder window. There will be a menu entry "Open command window here". Select it. Then, type "adb reboot download" (no quotes) and press enter. If this fails you need to turn on USB debugging on your device and try again. Settings>Applications>Development:Enable USB Debugging
For more information on ADB I strongly recommend reading the "ADB Workshop" by Adrynalyne and Captainkrtek.
Alternatively, you can power your phone off. Hold down the "Volume Down" button and plug in the USB cable (make sure the other end is plugged into the computer first).
If all is successful, you should see a yellow triangle around a hard-working android and the words 'Downloading... Do not turn off target' (also in yellow).
*Step 8*
Once your phone is in download mode it should pop up in ODIN. Once ODIN has found the device, make sure you have the tar.md5 file loaded in PDA from step 6, and press START! ODIN will begin flashing your device. After a few minutes it should reboot into recovery, flash some text, and reboot again into Froyo! If all goes well, the white box in ODIN will turn green (=
Troubleshooting
Lag or low quadrant score: re-flash using the .pit file
Odin doesn't recognize your phone: install the Samsung USB drivers and reboot
Odin says checksum failed: re-download package and try again
Looking Forward
That's all! You will need to setup your phone again like you did when you first got it. While annoying, it's worth it! Once you have everything setup you're good to go. Check back periodically for Froyo ROMs and customizations. There are already some on the way and many more coming since Froyo has been out for awhile -_-

Not sure. It's probably just as unsafe as using wireless tethering without a contract anyway. I'll look into it though.
Thanks dude, you and Keith are awesome. I will try these ASAP.

So with this new froyo ROM (I'm so excited!) There's currently no voodoo kernel that will work with this on the mesmerize, right? I don't care, I'm flashing it as soon as I can, Im just curious.

Hi all
Whipped this up for a friend. Thought we'd be nice and share
These packages will work on any current sw version for the Charge.
Please find below kernel and recovery packages hacked for the following:
permanent adb root
installs Superuser and su binary automatically on boot
includes Voodoo ext4 lagfix - CREDIT TO SUPERCURIO! http://project-voodoo.org/lagfix
lowmemorykiller tweaks
sdcard readahead cache speed tweak
If you are using Odin to flash, simply flash the below package. If you are using Heimdall, remove the zImage file from the below package and flash it.
After flashing the first time, you will hear a voice from the phone telling you what is occurring. The conversion to ext4 will take a few minutes. BE PATIENT. Once it boots, Superuser should be installed, and your phone's filesystem will be converted from rfs to ext4. To disable Voodoo lagfix and convert back to rfs, simply create a file on your sdcard inside the Voodoo folder, named "disable-lagfix". Then reboot your phone and listen for the voices again. This will also take a few minutes.
Please familiarize yourself with using Odin or Heimdall and have backup images on-hand if you are going to use this kernel. If you screw up, you will need them
I DO NOT have a Charge, these files have been tested by other users. As always I assume absolutely NO liability for anything that happens if you use this kernel. Phone blows up? It's on you to fix it
If you find this software helpful please click the "Thanks" or the "Donate" button. Either is fine by me. If you would like to investigate the changes that were made, please feel free to find them here, and here.
Enjoy.
EDIT
Uploaded 2nd version
EDIT
Uploaded 3rd version
changed the install scripts around
should copy files more efficiently
fix file ownership and permissions
UNTESTED!
EDIT
Uploaded 4th version
Confirmed root from independent user!
rewrote install process to preserve file path and permissions
will look into the bootanimation graphics issue
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14764513/VoodooChargeKernel4.tar.md5
EDIT
Uploaded additional recovery file
Flashes custom version of ClockworkMod recovery 3.x
Recovery includes Voodoo specific options for enabling/disabling Voodoo lagfix
Flash with Odin or Heimdall just like the kernel files
HAS BEEN LIGHTLY TESTED! USE CAUTION AND HAVE A BACKUP!
if you do not have root:
* check adb shell and see if you get a '#' prompt. If so, you *have* root on adb, and you may install whatever you want in /system
* check to see if Superuser app is installed
* check to see if /system/xbin/su exists on your phone.
If you have problems, please post the results of those checks. Thanks.
LLGW. Headed to bed now but first thing in the morning, I wondering what I'm doing
Thanks jt!!!! Can't wait to flash this once my charge comes in the mail.

What verison of odin should I use? I just flashed this and it failed.
using odin3 v1.3 and failed too..
phone wont boot, had to reflash ed1
The kernel flash was successful, and the filesystem conversion took about 8 minutes to run. However, I was not rooted when the phone booted back up. Here is what I did, let me know if I missed a step:
Start on rooted ED1
Accept ED2 OTA
Lose Root
Flash new kernel using ODIN
After ~10 minutes, phone boots successfully, but I do not have root.

Keep trying. I finally got it to flash with 1.30. Seems to be booting. On boot it did not change the file system, it just booted normally.
Edit:I just put in my spare battery and it is now converting the file system. The other battery was probably too low.
Where's my wifi? Anyone else facing an error when attempting to start wifi?
Yeah it looks like it killed wifi. I also am not rooted.
So if I flash back to rooted ED1 will it wipe my data?

I was able to flash with it just named .tar, using ODIN 1.85. Did you retain your root access after the renamed flash?
Updated OP with a new version. Anyone who has flashed the original version, please check adb shell and see if you get a '#' prompt. If you do, then you're technically rooted

Click PDA and select the file then just hit start
Infuse Version 2 BETA 2 and BETA 3 roms - Clockworkmod Kernel Setup
(Fixes Video Problems in Beta 2 & Beta 3 and ClockworkMod Recovery too)
#1: Download "sgs kernel flasher" (free) from market
#2: Download "CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip" from here: http://www.multiupload.com/1E3AWIQYAA
#3: Copy "CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip" into /mnt/sdcard
/sgs-kernel-flasher folder
#4: Open sgs kernel flasher and select "backup kernel" you will
see the dated filename of the saved file on bottom of screen
Now you have 2 kernels to choose from, the "CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip" and the kernel you backed up using sgs kernel flasher.
For normal operation of Infuse v2 beta 2 or beta 3 your sgs backed up kernel is what you want to select and use.
If you want to do anything like backup or restore in clockworkmod recovery simply open sgs kernel flasher and click "choose kernel".
Then click "CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip" after this step, press the power button and select "recovery".
The phone will reboot into red clockworkmod recovery menu without any rainbows so you can use all functions and features of clockworkmod recovery.
When you are done using clockworkmod recovery restart phone, open sgs kernel flasher and click "choose kernel" now click the kernel you have backed up.
Reboot the phone again and you will be in normal Infuse v2 beta 2 or beta 3 "rainbow mode" and you are back where you started from.
NOTICE: If you are stuck on a rainbow screen after trying to go into clockworkmod recovery you will need to download the "odin no rainbow" kernel and put the phone in download mode and flash the odin kernel.
Here is the link for the Odin flash no rainbow kernel you need.
http://www.multiupload.com/751NVU5V55
After flashing with Odin restart the phone then follow all the instructions above starting at #1
Have a great day,
Enjoy!

yes I know we can use odin but odin requires a computer with windows and samsung usb drivers..
A lot of people do some of these things when they do not have a computer handy, or they are not home and do not want to install usb drivers in other peoples computers or some people simply don't want to mess with the computer if they can do some of these things without one.
There has been much talk about this ever since Infuse v2 beta 1 and 2 came out and there were a lot of misunderstandings about the process.
Anyway, have a great day, Enjoy!
I find that the CWM kernel has less rainbows with daily use anyway. And video playback is borked with both anyway, so I just stick with the CWM kernel.
Will this work with the kernel being packaged with odin like it is???

if your video playback is broke with both kernels then you have done something wrong for sure during flashing of Infuse v2 beta 1 or 2.
The only way to fix it is to go back to froyo rom be sure its rooted and has 3e recovery then go into recovery mode using power button selecting recovery then flash the infuse v2 beta 2 rom with the RED cwm recovery menu.
After its done flashing select "advanced" in cwm recovery menu and select "wipe-factory reset" when thats done simply click on "reboot" and you will see rainbows, wait until the phone completely boots and ready to use.
Then reboot the phone again and leave it alone for 15 minutes more or less and after that it will only have rainbows during boot/reboot and the video playback/preview screen/gallery and everything else in the phone will NOT have rainbows at all.
Hope this helps! if so give me a BIG THANKS!

It works just fine. I verified this package on a device. I dont know where you got your version, but the one on sammobile.com is verified operational by me last night.
If you do not repartition while flashing bootloaders than you can have problems. This package is designed for a total restoration. Its likely you were using a package that some guy created and he didnt know what he was doing.
Im requesting that all comments pertaining to my package having bad bootloaders except this one be removed. This package is fine.

i used this to unbrick my phone but now it wont let my pc recognize the files on it. i plugged it into samsung mini kies and it recognized it. during installation it said it didnt work so i took out the battery and put it back in and then a screen with a phone and tiny computer popped up so i plugged it back into the heimdall program and it started working. it seems everything else is fine plus I guess it has gingerbread now but luckily i had backed up all my games 2 days before on the pc. plus the games are on the sd card but not on the phone. should I redo the heimdall program again? when i hit mass storage on the phone it makes the beep sound like the files will come up but nothing happens

Try removing the battery first. I don't know what's up with the Gingerbread bootloaders.
Guide to rooting your Samsung Galaxy SIII 4G - I9305 - Optus firmware
Hi Everyone, so I have been spending the last 3 or 4 days trying to work out how I can gain root access on my I9305.
The only thing I was able to find was horror stories of people bricking their devices...
After a lot of research (and quickly learning how android OS images work!) I was able to generate my own custom rom for the i9305.

}
Things to note:
THIS IS FOR THE AUSTRALIAN I9305 (OPTUS) SGSIII 4G ONLY! DO NOT FLASH THIS IMAGES TO ANY OTHER DEVICE!!!
I will not be responsible for any damage done to your device or PC(s), flashing custom rom's can be risky, so please be careful!
This will most likely wipe your phone, so make sure you backup first!
This rom is 100% stock, it does not remove any optus apps or branding,
This will NOT give you the yellow triangle at boot
the MD5 sums for the files are below

I9305XXALI5_I9305OPSALI5_I9305XXALI5_HOME.tar
to check these, download MD5summer from www.md5summer.org
How did I do it?
I originally created an insecure boot image, flashed it to the device and tried to gain root via adb, however this did not work, so I unpacked the system image file, added the nessicary binaries and repacked it.
Once I had done this, I was able to flash the system image with odin.
What do I need to do?
1. Download Odin (you might be able to use heimdall, however I have not tested this!)
https://hotfile.com/dl/173880315/eee04eb/Odin3_1.85.zip.html
2. Download the image (3 parts, zip files)
hotfile links;

http://www.renscreations.com/i9305/I9305_XXALI5_root.z02 - Part 3
3. Unzip Odin to an easy to access place (such as your desktop)
4. Unzip the image file to the same directory.
Use either winrar (www.rarlabs.com) or 7-zip (www.7-zip.org) to extract the multi-part zip.
5. Boot your SGS in to download mode
(power off... then press and hold the power + volume down + home buttons at the same time)
6. Connect your phone to your PC using the cable that came with it.
If you are using a laptop make sure you connect it to a port on the machine not the docking station (if you have one). If your machine has USB3 try to avoid using the USB3 ports.
7. Open the Odin application
Make sure your phone is detected, there will be a yellow square in the top left corner (see below screen dump)
8. Make sure it looks similar to the below screen (same options ticked, the .tar file in the 'PDA' section)
9. Press start and wait. Your phone will be flashed and reboot when it is finished.
10. That's It, once the phone has booted you will have root access.
Very clever mick,
Well done.
Amazing work! So with the three zips - best way to join as one?
i use winrar, however you could use 7-zip as well.
www.rarlabs.com or www.7-zip.org
I'll upload these to my own site for faster immediate download for others . I'm currently redownloading part 3 since it seems to be corrupted. Eager to root my phone, thanks for the ROM!
I am willing to bet it will work on any GT-I9305... Even the european one As its exactly like someone flashing A I9300 to a I9300 from australia or a I9300T they all work together I have done it perfectly without a problem.
So I would say All I9305 are the same Overseas and australians... BUT IT HAS TO BE I9305 Model number

Woohoo, it worked! Thanks a ton. Confirmed working on my I9305 from Optus.
Unfortunately my upload speed is rather slow so those waiting for an alternate download link will have to wait for a while. I'm only uploading part 1 tonight (available in 80 minutes) and will upload part 2 and 3 tomorrow morning.

Good work Mick. Have you tried installing any of the CWM's?
Do you need to do any sort of wipe prior to installing?

Cool thanks. So am not famililar with wiping except through CWM - do you just use the Samsung wipe in settings??
Dial *2767*3855# in the stock dialer, that is the quickest way.
but you will get NO warning, the phone will just begin to erase itself, so make sure you are ready!

Yes thanks. And is that a complete format of the SD card or a wipe like the CWM wipes which keep some settings on your SD card?

Sponsored by Open-Source Heimdall One-Click
Plese contribute to Heimdall. Heimdall allows the same capabilities of Odin on Linux, Mac and Windows. When we get Heimdall working, I will release a Heimdall One-Click which will streamline the process above to "download java app, run it and press flash" for all platforms. . Please contribute by building from source for your platform and testing Heimdall on the Galaxy Camera. http://www.glassechidna.com.au/2012/devblogs/heimdall-1-4-release-candidate-1/ If it does not work, we need someone with a Linux machine to run Wireshark on USB under Linux while flashing with Odin in a Virtual Machine.

You probly wouldn't want to run that kernel. I'm not a kernel guy so I can't tell you for sure.
I just picked up a at&t version of this camera at a at&t store and a update came up right after turning on. Will the root method work if I update it

Will this replace the stock recovery? And if so can this be backed up/restored with Odin?
I tend to run pretty much stock (and use something like Voodoo OTA rootkeeper to keep root).
P.S. could a mod verify my account so I don't have to hang around for 5 between posts?

it will flash GC100XXALK1 recovery. the real work is in the cache. Don't worry about the recovery. If you're worried about warranty, then just flash GC100XXALK1 to your device and call it a day.

No. CWM requires someone with knowledge of kernel development. Unfortunately my forte is hardware and software. I suck at firmware and middle-ware. That requires C language which is where I draw my line.
As far as I know, there are no kernel developers working on this device thus far.

Well, many Canon cameras have been rootable for some time to allow you to run the "Magic Lantern" software. But doing that would let you use more of what the sensor was capable of. Still didn't let you run apps

Thanks Adam. You're like the Galaxy Camera Guru for now! A real shame there isn't a lot of development interest in this device at present.
Just two questions..
if I flash the back to the stock GC100XXALK1 ROM you advised us to download, using ODIN, will that be sufficient for warranty purposes?
and will we still get OTA updates using your rooting method or again will we need to flash back to that stock ALK1 ROM?
Thanks
