Hi all
Whipped this up for a friend. Thought we'd be nice and share
These packages will work on any current sw version for the Charge.
Please find below kernel and recovery packages hacked for the following:
permanent adb root
installs Superuser and su binary automatically on boot
includes Voodoo ext4 lagfix - CREDIT TO SUPERCURIO! http://project-voodoo.org/lagfix
lowmemorykiller tweaks
sdcard readahead cache speed tweak
If you are using Odin to flash, simply flash the below package. If you are using Heimdall, remove the zImage file from the below package and flash it.
After flashing the first time, you will hear a voice from the phone telling you what is occurring. The conversion to ext4 will take a few minutes. BE PATIENT. Once it boots, Superuser should be installed, and your phone's filesystem will be converted from rfs to ext4. To disable Voodoo lagfix and convert back to rfs, simply create a file on your sdcard inside the Voodoo folder, named "disable-lagfix". Then reboot your phone and listen for the voices again. This will also take a few minutes.
Please familiarize yourself with using Odin or Heimdall and have backup images on-hand if you are going to use this kernel. If you screw up, you will need them
I DO NOT have a Charge, these files have been tested by other users. As always I assume absolutely NO liability for anything that happens if you use this kernel. Phone blows up? It's on you to fix it
If you find this software helpful please click the "Thanks" or the "Donate" button. Either is fine by me. If you would like to investigate the changes that were made, please feel free to find them here, and here.
Enjoy.
EDIT
Uploaded 2nd version
EDIT
Uploaded 3rd version
changed the install scripts around
should copy files more efficiently
fix file ownership and permissions
UNTESTED!
EDIT
Uploaded 4th version
Confirmed root from independent user!
rewrote install process to preserve file path and permissions
will look into the bootanimation graphics issue
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14764513/VoodooChargeKernel4.tar.md5
EDIT
Uploaded additional recovery file
Flashes custom version of ClockworkMod recovery 3.x
Recovery includes Voodoo specific options for enabling/disabling Voodoo lagfix
Flash with Odin or Heimdall just like the kernel files
HAS BEEN LIGHTLY TESTED! USE CAUTION AND HAVE A BACKUP!
if you do not have root:
* check adb shell and see if you get a '#' prompt. If so, you *have* root on adb, and you may install whatever you want in /system
* check to see if Superuser app is installed
* check to see if /system/xbin/su exists on your phone.
If you have problems, please post the results of those checks. Thanks.
LLGW. Headed to bed now but first thing in the morning, I wondering what I'm doing
Thanks jt!!!! Can't wait to flash this once my charge comes in the mail.

What verison of odin should I use? I just flashed this and it failed.
using odin3 v1.3 and failed too..
phone wont boot, had to reflash ed1
The kernel flash was successful, and the filesystem conversion took about 8 minutes to run. However, I was not rooted when the phone booted back up. Here is what I did, let me know if I missed a step:
Start on rooted ED1
Accept ED2 OTA
Lose Root
Flash new kernel using ODIN
After ~10 minutes, phone boots successfully, but I do not have root.

Keep trying. I finally got it to flash with 1.30. Seems to be booting. On boot it did not change the file system, it just booted normally.
Edit:I just put in my spare battery and it is now converting the file system. The other battery was probably too low.
Where's my wifi? Anyone else facing an error when attempting to start wifi?
Yeah it looks like it killed wifi. I also am not rooted.
So if I flash back to rooted ED1 will it wipe my data?

I just reversed the filesystem changes and then flashed back to ED1. My data appears to be intact.

I was able to flash with it just named .tar, using ODIN 1.85. Did you retain your root access after the renamed flash?
Updated OP with a new version. Anyone who has flashed the original version, please check adb shell and see if you get a '#' prompt. If you do, then you're technically rooted

I present to you an 'official' build including the kernel, radio, and full-blown froyo tastiness, for the USCC Samsung Mesmerize. Pre-rooted for your convenience, just download and flash with the latest version of ODIN. These are stock images plus root so your phone will function as if you just turned it on for the first time, albeit with a finger that magically instills root powers into any device you touch..
README
Step 0.5: I recommend disabling the Voodoo Lagfix before doing any of this. You need your sdcard partitioned normally. Let me repeat: Disable the Voodoo Lagfix if you are using a Voodoo kernel prior to flashing the Odin files.
Step 1
Download ODIN here: Odin v1.3
Step 2
Install the Samsung USB drivers: 64bit | 32bit
Step 3
WARNING: These files are for the USCC Samsung Mesmerize. Do NOT flash these to another device.
Download the ODIN package: USCC Froyo [ODIN]
Step 4
Unzip the ODIN package and you will find two files. One ends in tar.md5 This is the ODIN package that you will flash to your device. The other file ends in .pit. This file is a configuration file of sorts for your device. It is not needed unless you have trouble.
Step 5
Backup the data on your device. You are going to lose it.
Step 5.5
Backup the data on your device. It is not coming back.
Step 6
Open up ODIN. Load the tar.md5 file into the PDA section.
Step 7
Put your phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is to issue the "reboot download" command from adb. If you don't have adb installed, simply download the attached adb.zip. Extract the files to a new folder and open up a command prompt in that folder by holding down shift then right-clicking inside the folder window. There will be a menu entry "Open command window here". Select it. Then, type "adb reboot download" (no quotes) and press enter. If this fails you need to turn on USB debugging on your device and try again. Settings>Applications>Development:Enable USB Debugging
For more information on ADB I strongly recommend reading the "ADB Workshop" by Adrynalyne and Captainkrtek.
Alternatively, you can power your phone off. Hold down the "Volume Down" button and plug in the USB cable (make sure the other end is plugged into the computer first).
If all is successful, you should see a yellow triangle around a hard-working android and the words 'Downloading... Do not turn off target' (also in yellow).
*Step 8*
Once your phone is in download mode it should pop up in ODIN. Once ODIN has found the device, make sure you have the tar.md5 file loaded in PDA from step 6, and press START! ODIN will begin flashing your device. After a few minutes it should reboot into recovery, flash some text, and reboot again into Froyo! If all goes well, the white box in ODIN will turn green (=
Troubleshooting
Lag or low quadrant score: re-flash using the .pit file
Odin doesn't recognize your phone: install the Samsung USB drivers and reboot
Odin says checksum failed: re-download package and try again
Looking Forward
That's all! You will need to setup your phone again like you did when you first got it. While annoying, it's worth it! Once you have everything setup you're good to go. Check back periodically for Froyo ROMs and customizations. There are already some on the way and many more coming since Froyo has been out for awhile -_-

ShiftRRv1.0
Shift Root and Recovery will be able to root you're phone in a pretty safe manner. The program is designed to only flash the eng boot if the MD5 checksums are correct.
This does it by simply pushing / pulling the hboot from the phone and checking the MD5 as if you were to manually do it. Only this just does it automatically.
Check Root:
This will just run a quick and simple SU test to make sure you are or are not rooted.
Root:
You will click on this to install the ENG Hboot and load the correct files after the Hboot has been flashed.
Install Recovery:
You simply select the recovery image you want to use with your HTC Evo Shift. Leave the phone at the home screen and click install. It will auto reboot you to bootloader, flash the zip then auto reboot you to recovery to make sure it flashed successfully.
Backup / Restore WIMAX:
This option lets you quickly and easily backup your wimax keys to your home pc. It will also let you restore your wimax keys to your phones partitions.
[WHAT THIS PROGRAM DOES]
When you click on root, and click "NO" for this phone does not have a ENG Hboot. The program push's the ENGHboot from the Hboot folder to the phone and push's busybox. From there it gets a temp root shell. It then cross checks the MD5sum on the phone itself using busybox md5sum /data/local/eng_hboot if the MD5Sum math's it then proceed's with the dd if cmd. Once the dd if cmd is done. The program then sends the dd if cmd to /data/local/eng_hboot_check, it runs the cmd busybox md5sum again and verifies that the MD5Sum matches if so everything went well, the program cleans up its mess off the phone and alerts you its safe to reboot. IF IT FAIILS it will try 1 more time. The program is designed to check the HBOOT md5sum and verify if its the ORIG hboot if it is not and the MD5Sum doesn't check between the ENG and ORIGINAl it will attempt to flash the original and notify you if it succeeds. IF IT FAILS AGAIN. IT WILL NOTIFY YOU NOT TO TURN OFF YOUR PHONE AND COME HERE FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. I ADVISE YOU TO LISTEN.
After this YOU MUST REBOOT THE PHONE.
When phone is powered up again Click Root again this time select "YES" that the phone has a ENGHboot, this will get temp root again and push all the needed files, "SQLITE3", "BusyBOX", "SU", "Superuser.apk" to there proper location.
If YOU CLICK "YES" and didnt have the ENG Hboot thats fine it simply will temp root you and push files to your phone, but when you reboot they will be gone. Just start from the begining again and do it again.

I was trying to root, and I have windows 7 64 bit
Where is the link ! someone please give me the file , pretty please please please been waiting for this !!!
I don't know if this is what it's trying to achieve or not. I don't know how to do it either. Judging by all my previous phones, an all in one script could be written to do everything the s-off, root, and recovery post is telling how to do. Just a "simple" batch file and some support files and presto, it's all done!
Zip everything needed together and just unzip and run. I could probably teach myself by ripping apart other all in one packages and adjusting my port to follow loosely what they are doing but I just don't have the free time to spend on that project. By the time I would get around to doing it, someone else would have finished it. I just don't know things like telling the phone to reboot into different modes so it could continue it's job. I can visualize it in my head but making it a reality is completely different. Doh!
Anyone know where the download link went? I've been having trouble with rooting my phone and wanted to try this, but theres no download link in the first post (unless my computer decided to stop showing links).
Link was removed temporarily. Learn to read guys, sheesh
On a side note, I'm pretty psyched about this OP, since I haven't had the ambition to sit down and root my phone yet. Just curious, are there any files that would need to be downloaded prior to using this (such as the ****-root.zip used in the other root method)?
Oops, saw everything except "removed temp..." in the first post.
It looks like there isn't anything extra that needs to be downloaded. Looks like the OP figured out a way around it.

Sorry guys will work on this again in a few days girl is supposed to be going in to labor today...
On the side note the issue that I ran into is that running rageagainstthecage from the windows side does not give you root. It actually disables usb connection between the phone and the computer. I was trying to make this so you didnt need anything other then the program. But now with that being a problem z4root would be needed to obtain at least temp root but if i doesnt drop you to # then it still will not work from doing it automatically using arguments. That is what i'm trying to resolve first..
Ill get back to you guys on it, and ill even add the option to restore wimax keys.
That's what I was thinking You have to Temp root with Z4root first.
Since The manual root requires super user to work.
Dude!!!! thank you so much for this. Been wanting t root badly but was afraid to try the other method. Good luck with baby!!
Perhaps someone brave could test it out by temp rooting with visionary/z4root and then running the program? If you posted the download link back up.
Okay guys - I've created a Heimdall only version of Gingerbread/KF1 for those who want to use Heimdall.
THIS WILL GIVE YOU ROOT!!!
[Edit] This is the ODEXED version. If you are looking for the DEODEXED version, I will be posting another thread regarding that one.
A few things before I begin.
Many thanks to dsexton702, DrHonk, Krylon360, penguin0609, whitehawkx, and others for their work. If I missed your names, it's not on purpose, I just have a bad memory.
This requires Heimdall. A link to Heimdall for Windows is here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/az3ia99by9rgcdf/heimdall-suite-1.1.1-win32.zip
This is a Heimdall ONLY solution. You only need to unrar the link attached (yes, I use RAR. Sorry - but it's an all in one solution that allows me to manipulate RAR, ZIP, and TAR files.) into a directory. Get WinRAR (from rarlabs) to undo the file.
When unRAR'ing it, you will see 8 files and a folder. The folder contains the zimage_patch that is required to root the SGS4G.
This is a modification of what dsexton702 did. Steps are as follows:
1) Download the Heimdall suite file here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/az3ia99by9rgcdf/heimdall-suite-1.1.1-win32.zip
Install Heimdall, including the drivers. Read the instructions included.
If you have Heimdall 1.1.1 installed already, skip step 1 and go to step 2
2) Download the ROM file here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?d920rdcm2mt20ie
3) Unzip the ROM file to a directory.
4) Open Heimdall
5) Match the filename to the PDA/Code location. In other words:
FactoryFS = factoryfs.rfs
Kernel = zimage
Param.lfs = param.lfs
Primary Bootloader = boot.bin
Secondary Bootloader = sbl.bin
cache = cache.rfs
Database = data.rfs
Modem = modem.bin
6) Put your SGS4G into download mode. Click Start. Wait until the green bar goes all the way across and it's done.
7) Reboot to Download mode again
8) Close and re-open Heimdall. Click and browse zImage to the directory "zimage_patch". Choose the zImage file there. Click Start.
9) Let the SGS4G go through the Fugu bootloop a couple of times. This is where your SGS4G gets Rooted.
10) Reboot to download mode once more
11) Close and re-open Heimdall. Click and browse the ORIGINAL zImage (NOT THE ZIMAGE_PATCH VERSION!!). Click start.
12) Let the unit flash, then reboot. Download busybox to verify Root.
I've done this a few times with my SGS4G. It works for mine, but I need a couple of guinea pigs to verify it.
Let me know!

Oops. I forgot to mention Root.
This will give you root. No deodex. Haven't gotten there yet nor will I have a chance to even try - I have a family reunion and other events this weekend, so I wanted to get the Heimdall only version out there.
I'll update the original post.
Never used Heimdall yet.
Will this do a data wipe of my device or will I retain all of my programs and program data if I do this?
This will wipe everything. If you use Titanium Backup, you will be able to do an app restore.
works great with no problems also root checker verify

I went to install the Zimage patch, but now I am unable to get back into download mode, so I can't install it. Am I missing a step or something?

Nope. You MAY have to do the alternate download mode "method", which involves volume down, home, power, then insert battery.

Thanks. I did the steps above, but now, it just goes to the bootscreen and goes back to charging the phone. Very frustrating.
Nevermind. I tried it again and I'm good! Thanks!!
Netflix
If this helps any guys, The Netflix app is OFFICIALLY working with this rom!!!!!!! Spread the word!
OT, but I cant get the netflix app to work. It installs, but says streaming is not available on my device. Is it still working? What version are you using? Do you have a link?
This rom works great. Lots of issues - particularly videos - with the deodexed version. THANK YOU!
Blade
Hey I followed all the steps above but I am stuck in the fugumod reboot thing..unless its supposed to be rebooting 40+ times
After Fugu mod bootloop, you reflash the original zImage back.
yea i figured it out...i was just having a hard time getting in to download mode again for some reason...worked perfectly!
Thx very much
This Rom has fix the null/null Imei problem and can't catch the signal that always happen to me.
Hey, I'm a total noob but I have been diggin around. Rooted my first phone after bricking it a few times before installing this, which finally unbricked my phone leaving it rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193927
but my problem now is, when I try to install modded 3e recovery by replacing the old recovery file(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091465) in /system/bin I find it that there is nothing there, instead the recovery file shows up in the root folder... which is pretty messed up.

I have tried replacing the recovery file in the root folder and placing it into the /system/bin folder, nothing seems to work... It could have to do with the cracked version of Root Explorer I have... but that seems unlikely as the recovery file is simply not where it's spposed to be. And as expected, it still checks signature rendering me unable to install CMW (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107881)
I have resorted to other methods such as the one described by this user:
JOJO_SSC said:
1. Flash to stock Rogers UXKG3 Gingerbread packages (rooted) with odin packet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193927
2. Install SGS kernel flasher from market or apk file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877444
3. Download kernel Infusion-GB.1.0 put in SDcard.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1212485
4. Open SGS kernel flasher choose kernel...zip and flash kernel, waiting for restart
5. Now, your phone will have ClockWork Mod (CWM) for install custom rom.
6. Choose custom rom and follow method.
Enjoy.

But my phone gets stuck at the samsung screen and starts speaking in a robotic voice saying something about not enough room in system partition...
I have also tried to flash this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
which comes with the modded 3e recovery... same issue, except I was able to get into the recovery mode once, and it was indeed CMW, but after factoy resetting and clearing the cache it still gets stuck at samsung screen and a robotic voice comes on saying the same thing.
If anyone has any idea or could point me in the right direction, it would be much apprecieated.
Thanks
The easiest thing to do is put your phone in download mode while connected to Odin and flash the community kernel from the superthread....this will give you red cwm ....the voice you are hearing is voodoo lagfix activating...wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache....format system and data...fix permissions and then flash your desired rom....

every time I do it my phone seems to brick.
...EDIT: nvm fixed it, forgot to disable lagfix
Nice. Glad i found this. you disable lagfix by putting the Voodoo file on ur internal sd right? the one with disable-lagfix? or should these b deleted ? ugghhh

I can't remember offhand but if you Google disable voodoo lagfix or search in the QA thread, you should get some hits. It wasn't hard from what i remembered...empty folder or somthing like that...also can be disabled in cwm...there's a voodoo lag disable.
Important to keep straight rfs files system from voodoo. You'll boot loop...i found that out the hard way.
Disable lag fix before flashing community kernel. Or be bootlooped.

Ive done this ,also disabled lagfix. still no recovery file in system/bin ....
EDIT: sorry by "this" i meant

Then I also tried deleting the Voodoo file, reboot... still no recovery in system/bin... its on my root as first posted by jakjak
sorry people don't seem to read the title. don't use community kernel that's froyo. use the kernel in the Rogers root thread, infusion gb a2, hellrsiser, or entropy dd. if you have already rooted then sgs kernel flasher creates less confusion because you don't have to worry about what form the package is in. it can flash .tar.md5, .zip and other package types with or without internal folders.
since its having trouble with the lagfix create /sdcard/Voodoo/disable-lagfix
the V in Voodoo is capital and all others are lower case. disable-lagfix can be either a text file name or an empty folder. it just look for the path, not anything in it.
then you will have red cwm and be free to flash whatever.
My capasitive back, home and recent apps buttons has stopped working so I would like to have the on screen buttons as I do on my Nexus 10.
I tried to root the device to be able to modify the /system/build.props file. I used the superboot method but that din't work as I have S-ON. I then continued trying to install CM 10.2, and in the process, when installing CWM recovery, that asked If I wanted to root and I did. I then booted back in to the stock ROM now with root but after changing the build.props file it just reverted after reboot. I then continued to flash the CM10.2 and gapps for 4.3, but the device fails to boot... Now I have reverted to backup and use the button savior, but I don't like it...
I suspect that trying to flash this superboot messed up something... ? On one of the start up screens I have a disclaimer in red about HTC development software which came up after I tried to flash that...

Can anybody help me?
Having root does not grant you automatically rights to modify system files. For altering build.prop you should have mount /system partition in R/W mode before trying to edit the file. Even if you have root, /system is read only so you cannot save changes. You could mount system as R/W either by ADB commands issuing the following from command prompt:
su
adb shell mount -o rw, remount /system
Or by mounting system R/W from the root file Explorer you're using
Sent from nowhere over the air...
I used root explorer to alter the file, and before edit i clicked the mount r+w button. I read somewhere that on-screen buttons does not work on HTC sense anyways, so I may have to install CM or an other rom... I tried to flash just the CM10.2 an not the gapps now, but it fails to boot. The HTC splash screen comes up, the screen goes black, the splash comes, goes black, and so it goes...
I forgot to flash the boot.img... inside the zip

Although this is for another HTC model, the basic idea should get you started again.
http://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-to/fix-soft-bricked-htc-one-by-flashing-new-rom-via-adb-0154361/
I Guess that when i tried the superboot, that did something to my kernel. Inside the .bat file it actually flashes the boot (isn't that the kernel?)
Cyanogenmod also has a note in the install procedure which I initialy didn't do:
Note:
This device, if unlocked with HTCDev Unlock, must have its kernel flashed via fastboot. Extract boot.img from the CyanogenMod .zip package and flash it from the bootloader with: fastboot flash boot boot.img

So I flashed the boot.img inside the Cyanogenmod .zip first, than I wiped and installed the Cyanogenmod .zip from the CWM recovery. I ended up using the M7 snapshot of CM11, and that worked! I then flashed gapps for Android 4.4.
After everything was up and running I edited the /system/build.props using root explorer (I mounted /system as r+w inside root explorer) adding the line qemu.hw.mainkeys=0, rebooted and got the softkeys!
So what happens if you flash TWRP as the link says?

I din't use TWRP. I used CWM Touch 6.0.4.8.
I probably could just flashed the boot.img after the device didn't boot, but I reverted to backup, and started over and started with the boot flash...

Can you get to the boot loader menu?
You can still flash TWRP on there and follow the instructions. If you really want CWM afterwards, simply flash CWM back on. I would try the link since it is talking about stopping your boot loop.

As I said: I'm OK! Flashing the boot.img from inside the zip did the trick. Everything is working like a charm now.
