All links pulled due to XDA Request after an XDA member complained I was only out for profits to a moderator on a few products I have. Due to the fact I link to a product or two and a few other things in many videos, I was asked to pull any content relating to this.
I will still be offering all this great material at my website. Just go to google and search for MobileTechVideos.
Added link to new boot screen page on my website. Check it out in the bottom of the original post!
A+ Thanks
Checked out your offerings, good job
This is awesome, nice and simple. Thank you!

It should work no problems although I can't promise as I don't have a Roger's Captivate to test with. Worst case scenario is you would have issues and need to flash back to stock with ODIN.
Interesting. I was able to flash my picture of choice over, although it was a little too skinny (correct size needed?) and I managed a hat trick of having not only my pic, but also ATT's splash, and the Galaxy animation. I know as of right now you can't change the animation, but I was under the impression that the ATT splash would be overwritten, unless I'm missing something here.
EDIT: Whoops. Found out what I did wrong. But for those interested in fun facts, if you don't size it right, you'll still get the ATT splash. Herp Derp.
This should be put in the sticky thread!
Also, I'd like to add that I was able to make my boot screen 750X500 and it turned out quite nice. The aspect ratio is kept, so there's a bit more black space at the bottom, but I can live with that.
Guys I'm using cm7 on my captivate and I was asking if this method would work for me?

I noticed that when I use odin and the param.lfs file for my Captivate it doesn't remove the AT&T logo. Any idea why?
Because your seeing the AT&T kernel screen. You'll need to flash a different kernel without it if you don't want to see that.
So it is kernel-->boot logo--> boot animation. But if I follow the instruction in the post I get. custom image-->at&t img-->samsung animation.

No it's boot logo> kernel> boot animation. What you are seeing is correct.
the fun part is, hes not allowed to post his own videos, cuz it could potentially make HIMSELF money.

I know this is a bit old, but I only have 1 complaint about this method and want to see if anyone else has this problem.
Everything works fine, boot screen is changed, but it sort of ruins the volume up+power combo. Instead of a reboot, it takes you to another screen (some sort of error screen) and you'll have to do a battery pull or time it right so as soon as the screen turns black, you let go of everything and then just hold the power button to turn the phone on. Though this is a pretty minor issue, I prefer the vol up+power over a custom boot screen. I appreciate all of your work though Josh and I understand if the error is just a consiquence of the custom boot screen.
What do you mean some sort of error screen?
It shouldn't touch any sort of button combo, those are in the sbl.bin not the param.lfs which is where the the boot splash is.

None that I know about. Besides you can always do an odin restore to 2.1 and it will be like it just came out of the box.

I work for US Cellular. This phone is my work phone, and I develop on it. I'm 99.9% positive that you cannot brick these phones by rooting and updating them, or flashing anything to them for that matter. As long as you follow directions you should be fine. When using Odin, don't flash anything to the Phone portion. Only flash to the Pit and PDA portions. Also, never flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I don't care that other people have not had problems with it, It's not worth the risk to the average person. Also, read everything that you can and ask questions.
Come hang out in the irc room with us if you need anything.

Rooting allows you the ability to get to the root directory, run apps that you couldn't run before, and other features that you normally would have. It's a hand thing to do.
Rooting shouldn't brick your phone.

Yes after rooting you can download from the market adfree that will remove most ads. The what I like to use is titanium backup to remove or freeze the bloatware. By freezing it is removes it from the app drawer. But is still on the phone encase you need it later say for warrenty. But now with the Odin files for our phones you can delete the bloat and do a resort in you must warrenty it.

Adfree is awesome,
And another really good way to get rid of bloat is to use the pick'n'pack roms. All the instructions are on the post in the android dev section.
And rooting/ flashing shouldn't be frowned upon by a lot of people at us cell / samsung- a lot of those are people that have a passion for phones and do the same thing

I really like how Samsungs offer the battery percentage by the single digits versus motorola with the increments of 10. My friend has a Samsung Fascinate and he has the battery percentage over the battery icon in the upper right hand corner of the notification bar. I really want that too, and i have sent Jrummy16 numerous emails (the developer of liberty tool box, root tools, etc...) about possible dev support for the droid charge, and getting that battery percentage. But he doesn't respond to emails, so i've given up on his help. Does anybody else know about any method of getting that besides an app or a wiget?

you would be better off contacting individuals who work on samsung devices vs moto ones...but regardless...its just changing 3 xmls files in framework-res and adding the 120+ images for accurate battery
however no one is going to do this until you have recovery released...because w/o backups the chance of soft bricking is too high

Ok I followed the instructions for installing the rom and love it but, I lost all contacts on sim card. I'm guessing I might have made a mistake. Can anyone suggest a way of recovering them? By the way they were saved to sim.
You didn't save them to Google?
There's no recovery if they're wiped from you're sim .....try saving them to Google next time, you'll be glad you did.
just flashed a different rom and they are on the sim and show up but for some reason they wouldnt show up in tapasOS even when I tried to import them from sim it would say there wasnt any.Would like to use this rom.
Like I said....back them up on Google...and use this rom if that's what your hang up is...if your not gonna use this rom based solely cuz it wont read your contacts from your sim...then your comment about really wanna use this rom isn't true when there's several ways of backing up your contacts and making it happen.
That is such a BS statement if I ever heard one..."I would like to use this rom". But do nothing on your own to make it happen..
Come on people use some common sense and do something on your own without someone holding your hand.
I have been trying to remedy this on my own all day by reading and trial and error. I guess you can feel like a tough guy behind the internet.
Dyin' over here! I
To rephrase the advice given earlier (since sixstring will likely cut out all of those posts later) in whatever rom will read your contacts, back them up to your Gmail account. That way, you'll always have access to them on any rom.

This was my wifes POS Phone till I upgraded her to a SGSIII for Christmas. Now I have a device that would be perfect for my daughter if it weren't for the pesky phone option and Sprint bloatware. Are there any roms available that strip this phone to bare bones with no radios except WiFi? Haven't been able to find any and it might not be on the top of the Dev's todo list so if anyone is up to a ROM that will make this device at least usable because as a phone it SUCKS, but for a kiddo it would be a great toy with some of the game apps. Thanks in advance, and if I missed a ROM that does exactly what I'm asking in the mountains of pages in the Dev forum, please use only a small flame as I'm old and have a cold LOL.
A tip: when asking for help you might want to avoid talking trash about a device we users enjoy using.
My advice, 'the device sucks' and is a 'pos' so why bother doing anything with it. Go buy yourself, your kid or whoever an ipod and move on.

Just hate HTC. Have since the TP2. No appologies for that when they make life just such a pain in the ass. Even cringed when the wife chose it but cest la vie. I'm not going against the boss. Maybe I'm just stupid but I've tried rooting but its a 2.3.4 and every option this thread gives me doesn't work for some reason or another. ShiftRR doesn't run at all saying ADB is at fault but I can ADB into the whole phone myself no problems, ShiftySonOfA almost works but creates a boot loop that thankfully is repaired by doing an --undo, Quickroot seems to work but then unroots the phone just as soon as it reboots. Trying to do it manually using the info on here gives me exactly the same boot loop as the ShiftySonOfA.BAT file does and trying to update from SD using a PG06img.zip I got from a rootkit fails. I can't help it if I'm a Samsung fan. Their goal in life isn't making their users stress out over their phones by daring to think they can do better than they can. If its too much to ask that my RAM isn't more than half full just with OS and bloatware because this phone refuses to root then so be it but even if its miles below my Nexus it's still MILES above any iPoo device.
Then throw it out and go buy a portable media player, or better yet send it to a dev who would put it to use and go buy some type of portable media player.
Edit: and to anyone who actually wants to try and help this guy, does this really seem like a person we need to deal with in our little speedy community in the future?

ROFL Speedy community. Half of you are talking about swapping out to Photons and the other half are moving to One X's. yes I've read an awful lot before posting a question. Guess I'll be getting absolutely no help here. Not that there is much help available for this device when all the links are broken and the ones that are working, don't work for their intended purpose. Feel free to delete the thread MOD I'll stay where I'm welcome, in the Samsung sections.

Well its probably been a while since you researched how to root, because if you done that more recently or even looked at my sig, you would have already rooted that shift. I posted it here and in 3 other well-known forums so its hard to believe that you haven't found it.

Happy to see you leave, please don't come again.
Edit: and you couldn't have read to much or you would have been able to root it. Well then again, you were calling your recovery touchwiz in another thread soooo... I'm guessing you have some trouble grasping things at times.

Samsung sections?! Have fun! I don't see how you'd be welcome there either. Also I hope you enjoy your screen burn in Galaxy Nexus - http://cdn1.sbnation.com/imported_assets/895626/4731866441_f37348315f.jpg . Ugh Buh Bye
