[Q] AT&T Coverage map - General Questions and Answers

I am buying a Samsung Vibrant in a few hours, ill root and unlock it so I can use it on AT&T. Ive read everywhere that it has the 1900 mhz band and gets AT&T's 3g in SOME places. I am looking for a coverage map of the 1900 mhz band, does anyone know where to find one? Im getting a great deal on this thing and am debating whether or not I should keep in when I upgrade in two months as a backup. My big question is whether or not I will get the same 3g coverage as I do now, I doubt it but I am still interested in looking into it.

Why not get AT&T's Galaxy S variant? If you're rooting then they're pretty much the same.

Yes, I know this, comparing the two the Vibrant feels a little more solid then the Captivate. Not only that, surfing craigslist in my area for a good deal on either one, the Captivates are all sold, I finally found this single Vibrant and decided id take it

New phone selection

Hi guys, I recently acquired an HTC Wizard, I unlocked it and flashed a custom rom and I really like the phone but I'm looking to upgrade. The phones I've been looking at are the Dream, Kaiser and the Fuze. I've read the reviews on the G1 and it looks good but I'm not sure I'm ready to give up windows mobile (office is handy for work). But since I hear such good things, hows it compare to the others? Is the Fuze really worth me shelling out more cash over the Kaiser (about $150-$200 on ebay)? I'm also wondering if there are any other HTC models that offer everything I want without seriously breaking the bank. It needs to have mp3, video, net, keyboard, GPS, 3g, wifi, tetherable, touchscreen and needs to be unlockable or T-mobile based. Basically just looking for some advice on the best buy for my buck. Even if it's not necessarily an HTC (hope I don't get flamed for this =P). Also one more quick question, if I'm currently on T-mobile with the non 3g wizard and I pop my sim into a 3g phone, it will work at 3g speeds without me needing to do anything (provided coverage is in my area) ? Thanks in advance.
I miss my Fuze. I ended up returning it to get a Xperia, and I regret it, due to the Xperia's subpar keyboard.
On the other hand, the Touch Pro 2 will be out soon in the US (as the HTC Fortress on AT&T at an indeterminate date and the T-Mobile Wing II in July), and that should be everything the Fuze is and more (thinner, better battery life, larger and higher res screen, etc). I'd wait for that.
As for the sim swap question, yes, it should work, assuming the phone you pop your T-Mobile sim in supports 3G at 850MHz, as that's the only frequency T-Mobile uses for 3G (as opposed to AT&T, which uses 850 and 1900 depending on area). If you use a Euro phone, expect it to only work in 1900MHz areas in the US if at all. Phones actually marketed for the US will support both 850 and 1900 bands, which means you won't have a problem.
Thanks for the info. Any idea on the cost of the touch pro 2? I wasn't really looking to break the bank but I am intrigued.

Welcome to the forum
Depending on your conuntry the price varies
Have a look on expansys to ha an idea
$600-$800USD
That's without a contract, of course. AT&T and T-Mobile should both have the Touch Pro 2 for $150-300 depending on where you order it with plans, if my guess is accurate.
Yea just checked out a video on it and it looks really nice, I'm currently on a prepaid month to month thingy with t-mobile but if I can score this phone for $200 or so with a new contract I might have too. However for the time being I might have to go pick up a Kaiser, they are half the price of the fuze used and although not as sexy still do everything I'm looking for.
Doesn't T-mobile use 1700mhz for 3g and 850 for edge/gprs? From what I've been reading the kaiser wont do 3g on T-mobile.

[Q] Does anyone know if the G2X is the dual band phone?

Hi,
I was just wondering, I was told that the G2X is a dual band phone, to me that means that it will work on T-mobile's network and At&t's as well for incase the merger happens. If this is true then is this the only one of it's kind that T-mobile has to offer? I want to get 1 last T-mobile phone before the merger happens. I know word it it could be a few years before any changes that effect us T-mobile customers and our Devices but you never know. So I thought if I was going to spend some serious coin on a new phone it may be safer to get one that works with both.. or should I not even worry about that at all right now? Any opinions or inside scoops? I'm not to up on this.
Thanks,
Kn0t
As far as i know it's dual band yes.
No, as far as I know the phone does not support AT&T's 3G bands (850/1900).
I think the only phone that actually supports both T-Mobile 3G and AT&T 3G is the Nokia N8. The Samsung Vibrant partially supports AT&T 3G, but only on the 1900 band, which means you'll run into issues in 850 areas and probably drop to EDGE in buildings, etc. where AT&T relies on 850 for better penetration.
Having said all that, the G2x is certainly a good phone. I would recommend it over a Vibrant (and definitely over a Nokia N8). The AT&T merger may not even necessarily happen (it is not 100% confirmed yet). I would not worry about that right now, unless you intend to actually stick with the same phone for at least 1-2 years. I know for me personally that would be hard to do (except for some devices).
I have the g2x...it's a great phone...and it's been confirmed NOT to support AT&T's high speed bands. Still, well worth recommending, but if/when the merger goes through you'll need a new phone. My contract just came up and I popped for it. AT&T supposedly will offer us "comparable" devices when the time comes.
Hope this helps...

[Q] Is there a remedy for 2g data speeds from T-Mobile?

I thought I did my homework. But when I called t-mobile to find out if the quad band Infuse would work on their network, I didn't ask what kind of data speeds I would get. My bad.
So now I have this almost perfect device that gets 2g speeds. Not even 3g. And they're charging me $9.99 a month (for tethering) for this privilege because it's not a t-mobile phone.
So if any of you know a workaround, please let me know.
Otherwise, I'll have a one week old Infuse to sell.

Sell it. The Infuse does not support the UMTS1700 band that T-Mobile uses. Neither does any other AT&T phone that I know of.
For the most part, with a few rare exceptions, unless the phone was sold by T-Mobile USA, it won't get 3G speeds.
You can sometimes go the other way - 2-3 T-Mobile phones support the AT&T 3G bands, but it's rare.
I don't think any AT&T phones support the AWS (UTMS1700) band for T-Mobile, but I know that a few T-Mobile phones (Galaxy S phones) have the 1900 band, so they work on AT&T's 3G network.
Your better off selling the Infuse and getting something like it for T-Mobile, or just wait for the SGS2, and get that, because your Infuse will be stuck on 2G.

But what about when ATT takes over tmobile? Will it change then?

Not for existing devices, it's a hardware limitation
The tech guy I spoke with at t-mobile said it probably will -- but that's quite a while to wait. By then a GSM version of Kyocera's Echo might be out. Now I know what questions to ask.

T-Mobile USA 3G Compatible - Which Version?

I hear the O3D has 2 international versions, and both do not support the T-Mobile USA 1700/2100 band.
How can I tell the difference?
I already made the mistake getting the Thrill 4G without realizing it would only work on 2G for T-Mobile. Awesome phone but I would like to have 3G as well so I will be returning my Thrill and getting an O3D on eBay.
there's been a lot of topics similar to this.
When searching online or on ebay, just go read the HSDPA bands. If it has 1700 on it, you're fine. Ignore the GSM bands since that's every version of the Optimus 3D will work.

Here's a link, sorry not ebay.

Ouch. You may want to get it from a retailer since you'll have a better chance at getting a better warranty. There are domestic (USA-based) retailers who have the O3D at good prices, AND if it's the wrong one you'll have an easier time returning it. Plus, they will be able to tell you if you are getting the right one with AWS/1700 bands. That's the one I have and I get 3.5G speeds on it. You can see other threads for some speed test results, and they are good.
Good luck.

SM-G920FD and LTE in Canada / North America

Hi everyone.
I'm in Canada but I bought a galaxy S6 Duos (SM-G920FD) from HK (or Taiwan, can't remember) in August because I really wanted to try out a Dual SIM phone. That part I really like, no more carrying that 2002 throwback phone from work...
Anyway, the phone is nice, I like it and like I said I like the Dual SIM convenience. But... my phone's been having some issues lately. Some of it might be me just going bananas over installing system heavy apps, but one thing's always been an issue: the LTE. I read up on the subject beforehand and even if I'm no expert, I pretty much saw that the LTE bands used by my provide - Rogers - were supported. Although I do get "4G" once in a while, I am never more than one, maybe two bars of signal. When it's strong enough, speeds are decent, but more often than not I fall back on HSPA at full bars.
I live in a large city with very reliable wireless. I checked everything I could with Rogers and made all system updates. I'm not rooted so I can't go that far, but I had an iPhone right before this and it was almost always full signal in LTE. Similarly, I share my data plan with my iPad and side-by-side, my iPad is 4 or 5 out of 5, while my S6 is barely on 4G.
My question being, is this normal and did I misunderstand the specs, or is there something wrong with my phone?? Because Samsung does NOT recognize international warranty (btw, that's horrible), I can't really easily fix it. The seller offered to have it repaired under warranty, but I need to ship it back so more costs but more importantly, no phone for god knows how long.
Any and all info appreciated, as always
